Uva's tea landscape developed through nineteenth-century plantation agriculture. Ask a visitor-welcoming estate or factory about its current tour, tasting and permitted paths; learning about the leaf is more rewarding than entering a working field for a photograph.
The restored Badulla–Nanu Oya section can include Ella, but the official notice does not certify a journey from Kandy. Confirm the specific train and seat with Railways or keep road travel for the whole hill chapter.
Look beyond the ramparts to verandas and courtyards, then choose the Maritime Archaeology Museum for shipwreck ceramics and models of fishing craft. Three nights also leave a separate day for Unawatuna; its beach is outside the Fort, with its own journey.

Three Bentota nights leave separate time for beach, river or Bawa's Lunuganga garden. Check which side of the river your room occupies: Aluthgama is a different town. This southwest finish reduces the final return compared with Ella, but still needs a generous airport buffer.

Choose a safe public viewpoint, keep away from railway tracks and enjoy the arches without needing a train at one exact minute. Uva's railway reached Badulla in 1924, linking today's scenic journey to the region's plantation history. If a train is your priority, confirm a particular Nanu Oya–Ella service and ticket with Railways, plus road transport to the starting station. Choose Lunuganga for a different Bentota experience from the beach. Geoffrey Bawa bought the former rubber and cinnamon plantation in 1948 and transformed it into his own garden over decades. A guided visit offers a way to see the landscape as a designed place rather than a quick photograph between transfers. The Trust warns of steep access, steps and uneven ground, so confirm the current visit arrangements and explain any mobility needs beforehand. If those paths do not suit the group, use the river or shore instead. Keep the afternoon unhurried and the final dinner local: rice and curries or hoppers can be as much a part of the day as the garden.
