Punta Cana is the cleanest answer to a simple question: where can I fly, reach a broad choice of beach hotels and spend most of a week without moving? The answer is strong precisely because it is specific. Bávaro has concentrations of resorts and services, Cap Cana has a different planned-estate setting, and Uvero Alto is far enough from the familiar Bávaro strip to change taxi and restaurant assumptions. Treat a property pin, the beach in front of it and the transfer from PUJ as one decision. A country guide cannot make all east-coast addresses interchangeable.
Bayahíbe deserves a different brief. Its village waterfront is a working departure point for Saona excursions, while Dominicus has more of a resort beach character. The island lies within Cotubanamá National Park and requires a boat; it should never be described as the beach immediately outside a Bayahíbe hotel. Reserve a full day for the outing, ask the operator where it actually boards, and leave space for weather or sea changes. If you would be happy with a quiet Caribbean-side shore even without the boat, the base still makes sense.
Las Terrenas earns its place for travellers who want to choose a restaurant, stroll between parts of town and use several beaches rather than settle into one compound. The town faces north on the Samaná Peninsula, so the attractive places around it are spread along an actual coast. Punta Popy, Las Ballenas and Playa Bonita do not offer an identical relationship to the centre. Before booking, decide whether you value a walkable evening more than a quieter stretch of sand; then check the room on a map instead of accepting a broad destination label.
Santa Bárbara de Samaná, shortened here to Samaná, is a harbour town and not a synonym for the whole peninsula. Its strongest winter-specific draw is the bay’s humpback-whale boat season, generally January through March. The whale trip is a wildlife outing rather than a scheduled performance: the operator, sea and animals decide what happens. Cayo Levantado and Los Haitises are other boat-led possibilities; Las Galeras and El Limón are farther peninsula excursions. Each needs its own travel time and current operating check. A town hotel is useful for bay activities, while a beach-first traveller may prefer another base.
Puerto Plata changes the tone again. The historic centre and Fortaleza San Felipe put architecture and a working city into a coast holiday; Playa Dorada supplies a more beach-hotel-focused choice outside that core. Arriving through POP reduces the first cross-country transfer if the north coast is the main goal. It is possible to combine Puerto Plata with the Samaná Peninsula, but that is an overland journey, not a casual hop between adjacent beaches. Use it on a longer route and give both coasts enough nights to justify packing.
Santo Domingo is an essential option when the trip should include more than water. The UNESCO property is the Colonial City, a compact and historically layered district at the Ozama mouth, while the wider capital has very different commercial and residential areas. Stay in or near the old centre if walking its sites is the main point; choose a modern district for a different dining or work pattern. An airport near the capital does not mean you can leave a Colonial City hotel at the last minute. Traffic, check-in and luggage belong in the schedule.
December to April is the broad period many beach travellers favour, but “dry season” should not be read as a promise of perfect sea or uninterrupted sun. The Samaná whale window is narrower. Later spring can still work for beach and city travel, while June begins the official Atlantic hurricane season. The correct decision is not simply which month has the most flattering adjective: compare the actual coast, the mix of beach and land days, the room’s cancellation terms and the most current forecast close to travel.
There is a hidden cost to every extra base. Two flights through different airports can save a return drive on a coast-to-capital itinerary, but open-jaw fares may be different. A rental car creates freedom to reach smaller beaches, while buses and taxis can keep a focused town-and-resort plan workable. Neither approach removes the need to verify pickup points and daylight driving. Build a complete dated budget with the road legs, food, boat trips and any park charges beside the hotel total. If a seven-day trip needs three full transfer days to touch four regions, it is a poor bargain in time even when the rooms look cheap.
The country’s recent arrival numbers explain why the east coast dominates travel planning, but they do not tell you which holiday is best for you. In January 2026, nearly three quarters of foreign nonresident air arrivals came through PUJ; that says much about air capacity and resort demand, not about the quality of a meal in Santo Domingo or the daily rhythm in Las Terrenas. Use statistics to understand pressure and gateway choice, then decide from the concrete days you want. A seven-night traveller who likes a single beach may be happiest staying put; one who wants cities and wildlife needs the longer route.
