A capital-city introduction, then four Exuma nights

Begin with Nassau’s streets and Bahamian creative life, then change scale on Great Exuma. The first stay puts architecture, art and food within one concentrated city day. The second gives you time for the cays, a drive across the bridge to Little Exuma and the much shorter crossing to Stocking Island. Each outing has its own day and returns to the same Exuma room.

We give Nassau two nights and Great Exuma four because the longer boat excursion needs a settled base. A final departure from GGT keeps the week moving forward. Choose this version when the Exumas are a main reason for travelling and you want local experiences between days on the water.

Nassau’s history and Bahamian art

The limestone cutting of the Queen’s Staircase and the galleries inside Villa Doyle offer two different perspectives on the capital. Pair the built heritage with living Bahamian creative work, then leave time for a meal at the Fish Fry.

The Exuma Cays as a full day at sea

A day among the northern cays brings sandbars, clear-water scenery and the famous pigs near Staniel Cay into one substantial excursion. Staying on Great Exuma allows you to join a full-day departure without arranging a same-day flight back to Nassau.

Two quieter coastal days from George Town

Little Exuma’s Tropic of Cancer Beach gives you a day reached by road and bridge. Stocking Island offers a different outing across Elizabeth Harbour, with a beach stop and a return water taxi. Neither requires changing your overnight base. January to April is the main outdoor season, with milder winter evenings and warmer spring days.

Best for

  • Adults who want Bahamian art and food alongside several coastal days
  • Travellers comfortable with a long boat day and the selected snorkelling activities
  • Two adults sharing accommodation and arranging local road transfers

StartBooker answer

Can I combine Nassau and Great Exuma in seven days?

Yes: spend two nights in Nassau, fly from NAS to Great Exuma’s GGT on day three, then stay four nights around George Town. Give the full Exuma Cays tour, Little Exuma and Stocking Island separate days. Arrive in Nassau and book the onward flight from GGT on day seven. This plan uses two hotels and one island change, with enough time to see both the capital and the Exumas beyond a single boat excursion.

2 nights Nassau + 4 nights Great Exuma
One island move
Day 3: NAS to GGT, then George Town

Two nights in Nassau, four around George Town

Keep one room for each stop. A downtown Nassau address fits the cultural day; George Town and nearby Palm Bay support the Exuma outings without another hotel move.

A Friday-to-Thursday week through the capital and cays

The plan shows a Friday arrival, putting Nassau’s gallery visit on Saturday. Nights one and two are in Nassau; nights three to six are on Great Exuma. Day seven ends with departure from GGT.

1 Day 1 Friday: arrive in Nassau and settle by the harbour

Arrive at Lynden Pindling International Airport, NAS, and take your arranged taxi or transfer to the downtown hotel. Leave the first afternoon close to the property: a short look along Bay Street and the harbour introduces the capital without using the arrival day for a second island journey. The waterfront is a working place as well as a visitor area, with cruise ships and shops beside the old city. If your flight lands late, make this a simple meal and an early night. Tomorrow is the full cultural day, so there is no museum appointment to rescue after a delayed arrival. Keep the luggage in your Nassau room for two nights.

Overnight: Nassau

2 Day 2 Saturday: limestone streets, Bahamian art and the Fish Fry

Begin at the Queen’s Staircase, where enslaved people cut a passage through limestone in 1793–94, linking Fort Fincastle with the city. Explore the historic centre before heading to the National Art Gallery on West Hill Street. Inside nineteenth-century Villa Doyle, give the exhibitions time as art rather than treating the building only as a photograph. Saturday normally fits the gallery’s opening pattern; choose a week without a public-holiday closure for this visit. Continue to Arawak Cay for lunch, using a taxi if you want to save the walk along the western waterfront. At Twin Brothers, try cracked conch or a snapper plate, with guava duff if you want dessert. Leave the late afternoon for the harbour or your hotel, and pack for the flight tomorrow.

  • Queen’s Staircase
  • National Art Gallery
  • Arawak Cay lunch

Overnight: Nassau

3 Day 3 Sunday: fly to Great Exuma and unpack once

Check out after the second Nassau night and transfer to NAS for the flight to GGT, Exuma International Airport on Great Exuma. This is your only change of overnight island. The flight itself is short, but the airport arrival, check-in, bags and final road journey make it a transfer morning or afternoon. Use the operator’s check-in requirement and leave room in the day for reaching your new accommodation. Once you have checked in around George Town, orient yourself beside Elizabeth Harbour and find a convenient place for dinner. Keep the rest of the day light. The longer Cays excursion belongs to tomorrow, after a night on Great Exuma, rather than to the hours between an inbound flight and a boat departure.

  • NAS to GGT
  • George Town and Elizabeth Harbour

Overnight: George Town, Great Exuma

4 Day 4 Monday: spend the full day in the Exuma Cays

Take the prearranged pickup for the full-day Staniel Cay tour. Exuma Water Sports departs from Barraterre, about fifty minutes by road from George Town, and asks guests to reach the dock fifteen to twenty minutes before departure. Its current eight-hour programme runs 08:45–16:45, making this roughly a ten-hour outing with road travel. The route visits Big Major Cay’s pigs, sandbar scenery and other cays, with lunch at Staniel Cay Yacht Club. Thunderball Grotto is an advanced snorkelling stop: this particular trip suits confident swimmers comfortable with long stretches aboard. The captain sets the workable sequence for the day. Return to the same Exuma room for a quiet evening; keep the next coastal day free of another early boat departure.

  • Barraterre boat departure
  • Big Major Cay and the cays
  • Staniel Cay lunch

Overnight: George Town, Great Exuma

5 Day 5 Tuesday: cross to Little Exuma for Tropic of Cancer Beach

Arrange a driver from your accommodation for an outward and return beach outing to Little Exuma, with the return time agreed as part of the booking. The islands are connected by a small bridge, so this day takes you along the coast by road. Make Tropic of Cancer Beach, also called Pelican Beach, the main destination. Its long curve of pale sand and blue-green water gives you a slower day after the Cays excursion. Take a picnic from George Town and leave several hours for the beach, rather than assembling a sequence of distant stops. Return to your existing base in the afternoon. Keeping your third Exuma night in the same room makes this a coastal outing without another round of packing.

  • Bridge to Little Exuma
  • Tropic of Cancer Beach

Overnight: George Town, Great Exuma

6 Day 6 Wednesday: take the water taxi to Stocking Island

Head to the Exuma Yacht Club departure point in George Town for the water taxi across Elizabeth Harbour. Elvis Water Taxi serves Stocking Island and the Chat ’N’ Chill area; agree your landing and return arrangement before setting off. This is the nearby harbour island, distinct from yesterday’s road journey and the long northern Cays excursion. Spend the day around your chosen beach landing, with time for lunch at the beach bar and an unhurried afternoon by the water. Return to George Town with daylight left for packing and your final Exuma dinner. Keep the airport transfer for tomorrow arranged from the hotel, so your last evening remains part of the holiday.

  • Elizabeth Harbour crossing
  • Stocking Island beach time

Overnight: George Town, Great Exuma

7 Day 7 Thursday: leave from GGT after the sixth night

Check out after your fourth Great Exuma night and take the arranged road transfer to GGT. Book this itinerary with the onward flight leaving from Great Exuma, so the final day does not need an additional hotel move. The island has international air connections as well as flights to Nassau. If the booked journey uses Nassau as a connection, make its connection arrangements part of the air booking rather than assuming separate tickets form one protected journey. For an international departure, plan to reach the airport three hours before flying. Keep the morning for departure: a boat ride or distant beach visit adds little to the last day once the airport check-in is included. You have spent six nights in two bases and used the middle of the week for the coast.

Overnight: None (departure from GGT)

Choose the day-three flight before committing to both room bookings. Arrive through Nassau’s NAS and plan the final departure from GGT on Great Exuma.

Booking tips

  • The Exuma room allowance uses a higher-cost comparison: The Harbour House lists US$490 per night for 4 January–12 February 2027 and US$530 for 13 February–30 April, before VAT, plus US$60 per night and US$225 cleaning. Four nights are US$2,425–2,585 before VAT. Compare final hotel or condo totals for your actual dates.
  • The Nassau room component is an editorial allowance of US$300–450 per room/night, including charges, rather than a quoted hotel rate. A smaller room or a different meal arrangement changes the result. The Exuma condo example sleeps up to four, but this model shares the full accommodation bill between two adults.
  • Price the international journey into NAS and out of GGT, then the separate island flight. Flight dates determine the two room stays. If your return requires Nassau, use an itinerary with a workable ticketed connection or add a Nassau night and extend this seven-day plan.
  • Book the full Cays trip for the first full Exuma day. That leaves later coastal days available if the operator can reschedule for weather. Confirm the George Town pickup from your chosen property; Barraterre and Browns Marina are different launch points.
  • The Harbour House also lists a US$600 refundable security deposit. Keep that separate from trip expenses when considering payment needs. This property is a transparent price comparison, not a claim that a particular room is available for your dates.

Questions about the Nassau–Great Exuma week

Should I fly to GGT or to Staniel Cay?

Use GGT for this itinerary: it is Exuma International Airport on Great Exuma, serving the George Town base. Staniel Cay has a separate airport, useful for a different stay close to the northern cays. This route reaches Big Major Cay on the full-day boat tour from Great Exuma, then returns to George Town for the night. Booking a Staniel Cay flight would change the transport and accommodation plan.

Can I follow this week without renting a car?

Yes, with arranged road travel. Nassau uses airport transfers and city outings; the Great Exuma stay uses airport transport, the excursion pickup, a driver for Little Exuma and the local water taxi for Stocking Island. Choose George Town or nearby accommodation with those pickup arrangements in mind. The budget includes the Little Exuma driver separately from ordinary airport and local transfers.

What changes if the Cays excursion is cancelled for weather?

Ask the operator whether a later Exuma day has space, then move the Little Exuma outing or Stocking Island visit around that confirmed departure. Exuma Water Sports says it will try to reschedule and does not charge if that cannot be arranged. This leaves a useful shore-based alternative while you are staying on the same island, although it cannot guarantee another boat departure during your four nights.

Does the full boat day suit a family with very young children?

The named Exuma Water Sports group tour requires children under five to travel on a private charter instead. It also involves long stretches aboard and advanced snorkelling at Thunderball Grotto. A family needing a gentler version should choose an operator-confirmed shorter outing and recalculate the cost. This adult budget should not be read as a private-charter or young-family price.

What if I want a full Atlantis or Cable Beach stay too?

Add nights in Nassau before the flight to Great Exuma. The two nights here provide one full cultural day, so they do not also create several dedicated resort days. A longer Nassau stay lets you enjoy the particular property and its facilities, while retaining the four Exuma nights for their separate coastal outings. That changes the trip duration and room budget.

Can I finish with a separate flight back to Nassau for my US departure?

Only build that connection after checking the actual tickets, baggage process and airline requirements. The seven-day plan assumes departure from GGT, either internationally or on a properly arranged connecting journey. A separate Nassau flight followed by an unrelated international ticket needs its own margin and arrangements. If it calls for another overnight, extend the trip and add the room and transfers to the cost.
