Give Berlin three nights, step off the southbound ICE for one night in Nuremberg, then finish with two nights in Munich and fly home from MUC. This creates six hotel nights and seven usable calendar days without returning north. It is deliberately not a miniature grand tour of Germany: the Rhine, Black Forest, Dresden, Salzburg and Neuschwanstein cannot all be meaningful additions.

Berlin receives the largest share because its major questions are spread across distinct districts and historical layers. One full day joins the government quarter, Brandenburg Gate and the memorial landscape; the other gives Museum Island or another chosen collection a protected indoor block before continuing east. The Reichstag dome is free but requires advance registration and named visitor details. Museum Island costs EUR 24 for its current one-day area ticket, while the main Pergamonmuseum remains closed until 4 July 2027. Those two facts should shape the schedule before a generic attraction list does.

Nuremberg is the route’s pressure-release valve. Its Hauptbahnhof stands at the entrance to the Old Town, so a noon arrival can become a real walk rather than a station transfer. Follow the city’s official route from St Lorenz across the Pegnitz toward Hauptmarkt and the Imperial Castle, then choose either the castle interior or a later documentation visit according to opening day and interest. One night is not enough to exhaust Nuremberg’s history, but it is enough to understand the medieval city and avoid spending five continuous hours on a Berlin–Munich train.

Munich gets the final afternoon plus one complete day. Start with Marienplatz, Viktualienmarkt and the pedestrian spine instead of leaving immediately for Füssen. On the full day, choose one substantial anchor: the 2026 Residence Museum and Treasury combination costs EUR 15, or a different museum can take its place. Pair that indoor block with the Hofgarten and English Garden rather than another cross-region transfer. A Neuschwanstein day trip is reasonable only if the castle is the trip’s main southern priority; within this seven-day version it replaces Munich rather than supplementing it.

Book the open-jaw flights before the rooms, then use one cancellable hotel in each city. A flexible morning ticket can be better value than a bargain departure that forces breakfast, checkout and platform changes into an unsafe margin. Munich remains a city, not a day-trip platform

Alexanderplatz offers broader transport and often more inventory but feels busier and less intimate at the door. A room beside Hauptbahnhof wins for the Nuremberg departure yet can leave evening dining and neighbourhood character farther away. Three nights create an arrival evening and two full days; they do not support Potsdam plus every major museum.

Book between Hauptbahnhof and the southern half of the Old Town if rolling luggage and a morning Munich train matter. The station faces the Frauentor approach, making the Handwerkerhof and St Lorenz natural first stops. A room below the castle removes a late return after dinner but adds cobbles and an uphill bag movement. One night supports an afternoon Old Town circuit and a calm departure; it does not support the castle, Documentation Center, Trials Memorial and several museums. Pick the historical question that matters rather than racing between eras.

Marienplatz, royal collections, markets and an easy airport finish

Choose the Altstadt edge, Hauptbahnhof east side or a direct S-Bahn corridor according to the final flight. The Altstadt puts Marienplatz and the Residence close but can charge a premium and complicate wheeled access. Hauptbahnhof is operationally strong for the Nuremberg arrival, though ongoing station surroundings and street atmosphere require a careful block-level check. Isartor or Rosenheimer Platz can trade doorstep monumentality for direct S8 airport access. Two nights mean one arrival walk and one full city day; the airport morning is not hidden sightseeing time.

Continue through the government quarter to Brandenburg Gate and the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe. After lunch, choose the Topography of Terror for a free, text-heavy examination of the institutions of Nazi persecution; its documentation centre is open daily and should not be treated as a quick photo stop. End around Potsdamer Platz or walk a preserved Wall segment only if attention remains. This is already an emotionally dense day. Reserve the collection that matches your interests instead of buying a pass by reflex. The EUR 24 Museumsinsel Ticket becomes worthwhile at two current venues, but each substantial museum consumes attention; the main Pergamonmuseum is closed until 4 July 2027. A focused Neues Museum or Alte Nationalgalerie visit followed by lunch is often stronger than scanning every building. Continue through Hackesche Höfe or along the Spree, then use S-Bahn or tram toward the East Side Gallery area for a contrasting urban chapter. Return early enough to pack and check Berlin Hbf’s departure level. Tomorrow’s value comes from boarding the chosen ICE without a platform sprint.

4 Day 4 Take the ICE south and walk uphill through Nuremberg Train

Choose a morning Berlin–Nuremberg itinerary that arrives by early afternoon without a fragile optional stopover. DB saver fares start from EUR 21.99 across domestic ICE/IC/EC services, but the searched departure and its binding conditions are the real price. From Nürnberg Hauptbahnhof, leave luggage and enter through the Frauentor side. Walk St Lorenz, the Pegnitz bridges, Hauptmarkt and the climb toward the Imperial Castle. Albrecht Dürer’s House adds the artist and domestic city; the Documentation Center adds the former Nazi Party Rally Grounds and requires a separate tram or bus movement. It is dishonest to claim both plus a relaxed Old Town breakfast before an early train. Leave Nuremberg after the chosen visit and take a direct service to München Hbf. Check in, then walk or ride to Karlsplatz and follow the pedestrian street to Frauenkirche, Marienplatz and Viktualienmarkt. The evening is for the centre’s spatial logic and dinner, not a rushed Residence entry. Check day-six museum opening before choosing the morning anchor.

6 Day 6 Pair the Munich Residence with the English Garden On foot

Start at the Residence when it opens if royal interiors are the chosen anchor. In 2026 the Residence Museum costs EUR 10, the Museum plus Treasury combination EUR 15 and the complete ticket including Cuvilliés Theatre EUR 20. More rooms are not automatically better: choose the combination only when decorative arts and the treasury genuinely justify the extra hour. Exit through or near the Hofgarten, then continue toward the Eisbach and a measured part of the English Garden. In poor weather, replace the park with one unrelated collection rather than another palace wing. Keep the evening in a neighbourhood reachable by one direct line. Neuschwanstein is excluded because its transport and timed tour would replace this entire Munich day.

Build the morning backward from airline check-in, not from one last attraction. MVV’s Airport-City-Day-Ticket covers zones M–5, includes S-Bahn, U-Bahn, bus, tram and regional services, and remains valid until 06:00 the following day. Should I take a direct Berlin to Munich train or stop in Nuremberg?
