Finding rooms for your two-week Bali holiday

Make room for Bali’s eastern coast

Two weeks can disappear into a succession of famous photo stops. This holiday uses the extra time differently: a substantial eastern stay, with days for a working coastal landscape, a marine conservation activity and a royal water garden. You will move hotels twice and spend the other mornings waking in the place you are exploring. Ubud introduces the cultural surroundings; Sanur closes the journey with a different type of seaside stay.

The choice that matters most is whether Amed’s activities appeal to you. A traveller interested in salt-making and coral cultivation will have reasons to leave the hotel without repeating a beach-club routine. Someone seeking extensive shopping or a large resort entertainment programme may prefer a southern Bali base. Five nights in the east are deliberate: they leave four full local days and keep the two longer hotel moves outside the outings.

The schedule assumes that your arrival allows a comfortable onward journey to Ubud. A late landing may warrant an extra arrival night and a revised booking calendar. It also assumes that you can arrange vehicles for the countryside and eastern excursions. You do not need to drive yourself, but the location of each activity should be reflected in the holiday total. Choose the experiences first, then select rooms that make those days enjoyable.

Learn through participation

An Ubud workshop adds something you can try yourself, alongside visits to the island’s cultural settings.

Spend time in Karangasem

The eastern days cover several interests rather than treating Amed as an overnight detour on a cross-island drive.

A final coastal chapter

The Sanur stay combines room time with small heritage visits that reveal more than a beach panorama.

Best for

  • Travellers interested in east-coast livelihoods and marine conservation
  • Couples or friends wanting fewer hotel changes over two weeks

Think twice if

A shopping-centred trip, a daily beach-club circuit or a tightly scheduled intensive scuba course.

StartBooker answer

What is a good two-week Bali itinerary that includes Amed?

Start with four nights in Ubud, spend five in Amed and finish with four in Sanur. The Amed stay provides full days for traditional salt-making when it is operating, a booked coral nursery experience, Tirta Gangga and a quieter coastal day. All hotel changes are by road. This route suits travellers who want eastern Bali to be a substantial part of the holiday and are happy with arranged transport for activities outside their accommodation area.

Accommodation geography
Amed is a chain of coastal villages rather than one compact town
Salt fields
Hotel Uyah describes local salt production during the dry season
Coral activity
The Lipah experience requires confident swimming and excludes transport
Water gardens
Tirta Gangga lies inland at Ababi in Karangasem

    Ubud

    4 nights

Workshops and central Bali’s cultural landscape

Pengosekan is worth investigating when the booked workshop is at ARMA. A central-town room better suits travellers who want to walk out for several meals. A secluded rural property can be rewarding for time in its own garden, but check how its address changes the activities you have chosen. Four nights allow more than a brief arrival and museum visit; avoid paying for a location whose main advantage you will never use.

Watch out: Choose the address around your booked inland activities.

    5 nights

Village shoreline stays and specialist water activities

Look at the village name before comparing room prices. The broader Amed label spans a coastal sequence including Jemeluk, Bunutan and Lipah. A Lipah address has a different relationship to the coral nursery than a western Amed room. Ask the accommodation to mark itself and your planned activities on one map. A beachfront bungalow and a hillside studio also offer very different access. For this longer chapter, assess the room’s approach, meals and useful facilities as carefully as its view.

Watch out: The Amed label alone does not tell you which village a room occupies.

An east-facing waterfront and local cultural history

Choose the final room for four nights of actual use. A garden-facing category may be a sensible purchase when you spend mornings outside; a beachfront address has value if reaching the shore easily is central to the stay. Compare breakfast arrangements and shade as well as the headline room photograph. If the northern museum visit particularly interests you, check its relationship to your address, while keeping the small southern Blanjong visit a separate outing.

Watch out: Check the precise shoreline approach rather than relying on a sea-view label.

Fourteen days with an extended eastern stay

Days five and ten change overnight bases; the intervening days start and finish in the same accommodation.

1 Day 1 Arrive and learn your immediate surroundings

Continue from the airport to the room arranged in Ubud. Use the first evening to understand the setting you have bought: whether dinner is within a pleasant short walk, which entrance you use and where the garden or shared space sits. A property beyond the centre can make a very different first impression from a town guesthouse. Keep any central outing modest. An arrival day is better spent enjoying one nearby meal than struggling to fit a cultural visit around luggage and check-in. If you reach the accommodation late, let breakfast be the beginning of your exploration. Four inland nights give you three full days ahead, so the holiday does not depend on a productive first afternoon.

  • Airport arrival and Ubud check-in
  • One nearby meal

Base: Ubud

2 Day 2 Visit the village forest with time to look

Make the Sacred Monkey Forest your principal outing. Its operator describes a forest setting with paths, sacred places and facilities, rather than a staged animal encounter. Some temple areas are viewed from outside. Read the current visitor guidelines and follow staff instructions around the macaques; their behaviour should not be treated as that of pets. Carry only what you need for the visit and choose a route within the grounds that suits your energy. Afterwards, sit down for lunch in the surrounding town and leave the afternoon available for a browse or the hotel. Pairing the forest with a long waterfall circuit would change a manageable local day into a much larger drive. The forest visit can stand on its own.

  • Sacred Monkey Forest
  • Lunch and a small town browse

Base: Ubud

3 Day 3 Try an ARMA craft or music workshop

Book one activity that matches what you would enjoy learning. ARMA lists two-hour sessions including offering-making, batik and Rindik, a bamboo instrument. The choice changes the experience: a craft session produces something tangible, while a music lesson lets you practise a rhythm. Ask about the current instructor, materials, group size and the work you can take away. Arrange the session before building the rest of the day around it. The published activity catalogue does not prove that every class runs whenever you arrive. Keep lunch near Pengosekan and allow time afterwards for your own interests. Photographing a finished piece is simple; transporting a fragile object needs more thought. Prefer a session you would value even without an impressive souvenir at the end.

  • One reserved workshop
  • An afternoon around Pengosekan

Base: Ubud

4 Day 4 Understand the fields as a working landscape

Ask a local guide for a countryside outing focused on irrigation and village life. Subak is a cooperative system of water management with religious and social connections, so an explanation can make a field visit much more interesting than a quick panorama. Establish which place the guide proposes and the walking involved. The UNESCO listing identifies particular components; it does not turn every green terrace around Ubud into a listed site. Let the afternoon contrast with that outing. Browse for one purchase you have considered, sit in the accommodation garden or spend time with something you noticed during the workshop. There is no need to add another large attraction merely because this is the last inland day. Tomorrow changes the holiday setting, with the coastal stay already allowing its own exploration.

  • A researched countryside outing
  • Time for an inland interest of your own

Base: Ubud

5 Day 5 Move east without turning the drive into a tour

Travel from Ubud to the booked Amed-area address. Send the driver the precise village and accommodation pin; the broad coast label is insufficient for a hotel approach. Decide whether you want a direct transfer or a priced sightseeing stop before departure, rather than improvising several attractions while your belongings stay in the vehicle. Tirta Gangga already has a dedicated day. After arrival, investigate the shoreline or road immediately around the property. Find out where dinner is served and where the activity pickup will stop. A bungalow opening towards the coast, a garden room and a hillside studio each produce a different first evening. Settle into that specific setting rather than trying to cover the whole strip on arrival.

  • Ubud to the exact eastern address
  • Explore your accommodation surroundings

Base: Amed

6 Day 6 Ask about the traditional salt fields

Hotel Uyah preserves salt-panning fields operated by local residents during the dry season. Contact the property about whether production is taking place and how a visitor may respectfully observe it. This is a working livelihood, so a dated demonstration should not be assumed from a photograph. Ask before entering the work area or photographing somebody at close range. When production is active, notice the sequence rather than treating the fields only as a backdrop. If conditions or the working calendar prevent observation, keep the day local and ask about the salt available to buy instead. The names give a small cultural connection: uyah is the Balinese word for salt, while garam is Indonesian. A suitable meal and an unhurried look at your own village can complete the day.

  • Salt-making when locally available
  • A coastal village meal

Base: Amed

7 Day 7 Join the Lipah coral nursery experience

Reserve Ocean Gardener’s Amed Coral Restoration Experience at Lipah. The operator describes a four-hour programme with a marine-biologist-led introduction and one snorkelling session. Participants must be able to swim confidently. The explanation of coral growth and the nursery gives a different purpose to the water visit; check the activities offered on your date rather than expecting a guaranteed planting format. Transport to and from the experience is excluded, so arrange the approach from your particular village. The published inclusions cover snorkel equipment, refreshments and snacks. Keep the afternoon light after the session. If the carrier of the activity changes the plan for weather or local restrictions, use the agreed options and retain another land-based interest. Conservation participation should begin with a responsible operator’s instructions.

  • A booked marine conservation programme
  • A quiet afternoon afterwards

Base: Amed

8 Day 8 Give Tirta Gangga its own outing

Arrange a return road trip to Tirta Gangga at Ababi, inland in Karangasem. Its water-garden setting brings ponds, fountains, statues and stepping stones together, offering a different eastern Bali visit from the shoreline. Choose a walking route through the permitted public areas and take time to see the layout beyond a single stepping-stone photograph. Ask the attraction for current admission details before leaving; older tourism accounts establish the history, not today’s ticket inclusions. Be particularly clear if you hope to enter a bathing area. A garden ticket should not be assumed to cover every activity. Include a lunch stop in the driver arrangement, then return to Amed without attaching a full temple circuit. One carefully chosen inland outing provides enough contrast to the other coastal days.

  • Tirta Gangga water garden
  • A return driver outing with lunch

Base: Amed

9 Day 9 Choose a class or a day in your own coastal setting

For a different morning, check Blue Earth Village’s current yoga schedule. Its open-air shala is built with bamboo and recycled Ulin wood, with views towards Mount Agung and the ocean. Select a class appropriate to your experience and confirm how you reach it from the room. The operator publishes its weekly schedule separately, so this guide does not assign an invented session time. The class is optional. A slow breakfast and time around your accommodation are equally valid when that is what you would enjoy. Do not buy a yoga session on the assumption that it includes public access to every training facility: the pool is reserved for Apneista students and Blue Earth guests. Make the rest of the day your own before tomorrow’s hotel change.

  • Optional yoga class
  • Time to enjoy the eastern stay

Base: Amed

10 Day 10 Continue to Sanur and change the seaside rhythm

Check out for the direct road journey to Sanur. Agree where a vehicle can collect all bags and passengers, especially if the eastern accommodation is reached by stairs or a smaller lane. Keep the final coast address in the booking, so nobody has to interpret a resort name after you reach the town. Spend the arrival afternoon within the final property and its nearest surroundings. Sanur’s east-facing waterfront offers a new setting even though you have remained on Bali throughout. Leave the first longer shoreline outing for tomorrow. Four nights make the final room more than a place to store a suitcase before flying, so begin by enjoying the garden, shade or facilities you chose when comparing it.

  • Amed-area checkout and road journey
  • Settle into the final room

Base: Sanur

11 Day 11 See Sanur through Le Mayeur and Ni Polok

Check whether the Le Mayeur museum is receiving visitors on your date. Denpasar’s tourism account connects Belgian painter Adrien Jean Le Mayeur with Ni Polok, the Balinese Legong dancer who became his wife and model. That relationship gives a more specific starting point for the visit than treating the building as an anonymous art stop. Look at how the available works depict people and cultural surroundings. Keep the outing local to the museum’s northern Sanur setting. If current access is unavailable, use the morning for that stretch of waterfront rather than travelling inland in search of an instant substitute. The source is a historical account and does not confirm present opening hours. A nearby lunch and an afternoon at the room make a manageable day.

  • Le Mayeur museum when open
  • A northern Sanur shoreline outing

Base: Sanur

12 Day 12 Spend a day on the stretch you chose

Take a coastal-path walk with an endpoint that suits you. Breakfast can determine the distance: walk out along the shore, stop where you want to sit and return before the outing becomes tiring. The official tourism account establishes the east-coast setting; the hotel’s actual shoreline entrance determines how easily your morning starts. Use the afternoon for the room and facilities you paid for. Shade, a pleasant place to read or a pool available under the property’s rules may matter more today than another named attraction. If rain interrupts the outdoor plan, ICON Bali publishes practical visitor facilities including ATMs and a taxi queue. An indoor browse is an available local change of plan, rather than a reason to promise an all-weather beach day.

  • A chosen section of coastal path
  • Hotel time or a local indoor browse

Base: Sanur

13 Day 13 A small heritage visit and a considered last evening

Visit the Blanjong setting in Sanur Kauh if local visitor access allows. The inscription is dated to 913 AD and uses two languages and scripts, according to Denpasar’s tourism department. That is enough historical interest for a short outing. Respect the temple setting and ask what may be viewed; this is not a visitor attraction with access established by a generic resort guide. Leave the remaining day for final purchases and packing. Check any workshop item before putting it into the luggage, then choose a last meal for its own appeal. Settle late-checkout or luggage-storage arrangements with the accommodation if tomorrow’s departure needs them. The final evening can be enjoyable when those details are resolved while staff still have time to answer.

  • Optional Blanjong heritage stop
  • Packing and a final meal

Base: Sanur

14 Day 14 Let the actual flight date govern departure

Read the flight’s calendar date as well as the departure hour. A flight shortly after midnight requires airport reporting on the previous evening; thirteen booked hotel nights do not resolve that detail automatically. Match the pickup to the reporting instructions and confirm the checkout arrangement with the room provider. A later flight may leave time for breakfast or a brief local outing. Keep it near the final address and leave space for the road journey rather than fitting in a distant attraction. Use dated local advice for the airport approach. Your last day is a mainland departure with no ferry leg to negotiate, bringing the three-base holiday to a practical close.

  • Flight-led checkout and pickup
  • Sanur to the airport

  1. Ubud Amed

Transfer Travel time: Day five: a direct cross-region road journey

Request a one-way quote from the Ubud address to the exact eastern village. Ask for luggage capacity, waiting rules and any price for a stop you genuinely want. A vehicle-with-driver hire and a direct transfer are distinct service types. Compare the quoted total with the journey you require, rather than assuming a tour product is necessary for a hotel move.

Booking note: Include the village, accommodation entrance and the number of bags in the request.

  2. Amed Sanur

Transfer Travel time: Day ten: eastern accommodation to the Sanur room

Santai’s transfer page advertises complimentary return airport journeys for qualifying direct stays of at least five nights, while its guest FAQ also mentions transfers from other Bali locations. The two descriptions differ in scope. Ask the hotel to confirm whether your actual Ubud and Sanur addresses qualify, including dates and any charge, before counting either journey as included.

Booking note: Obtain written confirmation for both hotel addresses before relying on the transfer benefit.

No fixed road duration is promised. Confirm the proposed journey against your date, addresses and any agreed stop.

Booking tips

  • Ask the coral operator for availability before assigning an eastern activity date.
  • Check the actual salt-production calendar before relying on observation.
  • Retain separate quotes for the two hotel moves and the Tirta Gangga outing.
  • Confirm what any optional class includes beyond the session itself.

Questions before committing the thirteen nights

Can I follow this route without renting a scooter?

Yes. Arrange cars for the hotel moves, countryside outing and Tirta Gangga, with local transport appropriate to your eastern address. Amed-area rooms span several villages, so check the distance to the booked activities before treating the stay as walkable. The choice of room may change the number of paid local journeys.

Is this suitable if I do not want to snorkel?

The coral programme is the one scheduled activity with a swimming prerequisite. Leave it out if that does not suit you and use the day around your village or accommodation. The salt, water-garden and cultural interests remain. Do not book a water programme hoping that its stated prerequisite will be waived on arrival.

How accessible is an Amed beachfront bungalow?

The category name does not settle access. Santai explains that its traditional wooden structures and stairs are not readily wheelchair-accessible. Ask the property you are considering about the continuous approach from vehicle to room, bathroom and dining space. Request measurements or specific photographs where the answer affects whether you can use the stay.

Can I smoke inside a Santai bungalow?

Santai’s guest FAQ prohibits smoking in its bedrooms and directs smokers to their outdoor patio. Check the policy for your booked property rather than applying that rule to every Amed room. If you need a smoking area, ask where it is and how it relates to neighbouring rooms before choosing a category. A private terrace does not automatically mean unrestricted smoking throughout the accommodation.

Should I add Nusa Penida to these two weeks?

Only by changing the allocation. This holiday gives eastern Bali an extended chapter and already books thirteen nights. Adding an island crossing and accommodation is a different route decision, with nights removed from one of the existing bases or extra time added. Choose an island itinerary if the cliff landscapes matter more than the longer Amed stay.

Will Santai’s Wi-Fi support a week of work calls?

Santai says it provides Wi-Fi but cautions that speeds can be slow and the connection can be disrupted. Do not reserve the five-night stay around uninterrupted video meetings without asking about current service and a workable backup. Someone needing dependable calls should compare the actual connection arrangements with accommodation elsewhere, rather than choosing solely from the beachfront bungalow photographs.
