A one-way route that earns its desert day

Marrakech and Erg Chebbi are far enough apart that a quick “desert from Marrakech” label can hide two punishing road days. This route instead uses an Ouarzazate night, with Ait-Ben-Haddou as a meaningful stop after the mountain pass, then protects two Merzouga nights. One can be a camp if its facilities and transfer are genuinely worth it. The full day between those nights leaves space for a dawn dune walk and a village outing; Rissani's main souk is another option if that day falls on Tuesday, Thursday or Sunday. This trip ends in Merzouga, rather than returning to Marrakech. A traveller who must fly out of Marrakech on day five should choose a longer trip or another destination. In winter the pass and cold desert night are the constraints; in summer the heat changes how much time can safely be spent outdoors.

Atlas crossing with a purpose

The drive over Tizi n’Tichka changes the setting from Marrakech to the southern side of the High Atlas. An Ouarzazate overnight gives the mountain crossing its own day and leaves daylight for the earthen villages beyond the pass.

Earthen architecture in context

UNESCO describes Ait-Ben-Haddou as a fortified group of earthen dwellings in the Ounila Valley. Walk its lanes to notice the towers, gateways and shared spaces; the visit is richer than treating the ksar as a film set.

A full day at the dunes

Erg Chebbi rises beside Merzouga, where dunes, palm groves and village roads meet. A full day here lets you choose a short walk, a local outing or time in the shade instead of making every activity depend on arrival-day sunset.

Oasis and valley scenery

The southern road links Ouarzazate with palm groves and the landscapes around Tinghir. Choose a single valley or gorge stop on the long drive to Merzouga; a second major detour would leave too little time for the final approach.

A camp chosen for its facilities

A night in the dunes can include a camp transfer, dinner and breakfast, but these are provider-specific inclusions. Compare the full package with a road-accessible room near Merzouga before deciding whether sleeping on the sand matters to you.

Time for the desert beyond a sunset

With two Merzouga nights, the middle day can include a gentle morning in the dunes and one road outing. Visit Rissani's main souk only if that day is Tuesday, Thursday or Sunday; Khamlia or more time near the dunes works on other days. Keep the outing optional so there is room for rest and a proper meal.

Best for

  • Travellers with an onward plan from Merzouga who want a one-way southern route
  • Visitors comfortable with two long road days and an overnight break in Ouarzazate
  • People who want dune scenery without making a camp compulsory

StartBooker answer

Can I reach Merzouga from Marrakech in five days without rushing?

Yes as a one-way five-day trip: spend one night in Marrakech, cross the Atlas to an Ouarzazate night, then give Merzouga two nights before continuing onward. Visit Ait-Ben-Haddou on the first road day and choose only one substantial valley stop on the second. The route deliberately ends at the dunes; a return to Marrakech is another major travel commitment. Winter can be good for desert light but mountain-road weather and cold nights need checks. Spring suits outdoor time, while summer heat makes midday sand excursions a poor fit.

Departure city and a selective medina introduction

Spend the arrival night near a medina gate that a driver can reach or at a clear modern-city pickup point. A short evening walk introduces Marrakech without making the next morning depend on a late finish. This route needs a rested start across the Atlas; give palaces and gardens a separate city day.

Five days to Merzouga with a real desert day

Spend night one in Marrakech, night two in Ouarzazate and nights three and four near Merzouga. The longer southern drive reaches the dunes on day three; day five is for departure.

1 Day 1 Arrive and prepare for the pass

Spend the first day settling into Marrakech and confirming tomorrow’s road plan. Walk a small circuit from the hotel to a known medina gate, take in the city at street level and eat nearby. This is a sensible moment to buy water, check that luggage fits the vehicle and ask the driver about planned rest and fuel stops. A late flight should shorten this day, not force a night drive. If you want one cultural stop, choose it only when your arrival time is secure. In summer avoid a long midday medina march; in winter remember that the next road reaches colder mountain air.

  • confirm a road-accessible pickup point
  • short medina orientation and one unhurried meal
  • check driver, vehicle, luggage and next-day start

2 Day 2 Cross the Atlas and visit earthen architecture

Leave Marrakech in daylight for the Tizi n’Tichka crossing, allowing for winding roads and a real break rather than assuming a constant highway speed. Stop at Ait-Ben-Haddou when current access and the group’s energy allow. UNESCO describes a fortified grouping of earthen buildings; look at the towers, narrow entries and village setting, and keep photography respectful where people live or work. Continue to Ouarzazate for the night instead of driving on toward Erg Chebbi exhausted. A winter forecast may alter the pass plan; accept a delayed day rather than forcing unsafe conditions.

  • daylight Atlas crossing with rest stops
  • Ait-Ben-Haddou as a heritage visit, not just a film backdrop
  • overnight beyond the pass in Ouarzazate

Base: Ouarzazate

3 Day 3 Ouarzazate to the Merzouga dunes

Set out from Ouarzazate with a full road day in mind. The route can pass the Dades and Todra landscapes, but choose one meaningful stop rather than trying to tour both gorges fully before a sunset camp transfer. The dune edge is impressive even without an immediate camel ride; a quiet room and a short walk may be the better first evening after hours in the vehicle. Keep water accessible. If you stay at a camp, tell it about dietary needs before the final transfer.

  • one valley or gorge stop chosen in advance
  • road arrival with water and meal breaks
  • dune sunset only if arrival and conditions truly allow

Base: Merzouga

4 Day 4 Spend a complete day at Erg Chebbi

Protect this day from another long drive. Walk a modest stretch of sand in suitable morning conditions, using a local guide for a longer route where ridges and heat make navigation harder. Leave the midday hours for shade, food and recovery. Rissani's main souk normally runs on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. On other days, stay near the dunes or visit Khamlia only if you have arranged a specific stop there; no performance is included in this itinerary. Either village visit needs road transport from Merzouga. If moving from a Merzouga room to Tassili's Erg Znaigui camp, note that Tassili places the camp about 20 minutes from central Merzouga. Arrange its included final 4×4 pickup and allow extra time to meet the driver. A guesthouse night is equally valid.

  • early dune walk sized to heat and fitness
  • Rissani's main souk on a market day, or Khamlia by road
  • camp or guesthouse night chosen for comfort, not marketing

Base: Merzouga

5 Day 5 Depart with a real onward plan

After breakfast, take a final short look at Erg Chebbi, collect your bags and finish this itinerary in Merzouga. Any journey to Marrakech, Fes or an airport is outside this itinerary and its budget table. Book that transport separately and check how long it takes; the return across the Atlas is a substantial drive. If leaving from a camp, confirm where your driver can collect you and allow time for the camp transfer. Do not assume that a major airport is close enough for a flight on the same day.

  • sunrise or short final sand walk if conditions fit
  • collect luggage and confirm the driver meeting point
  • finish the itinerary in Merzouga; arrange onward travel separately

Cross the Atlas, then continue through the southern valleys

Both legs use roads, but they solve different problems: the first allows time for the pass and an optional ksar visit, while the second preserves a usable desert arrival.

2 transfers

  1. Marrakech Ouarzazate

Car Travel time: Most of a daylight day with an optional heritage visit

The road crosses the High Atlas by Tizi n’Tichka. Ait-Ben-Haddou is a worthwhile heritage detour before Ouarzazate, but it is not a zero-time roadside photo stop. Add fuel, food and the possibility of winter weather to the plan.

  2. Ouarzazate Merzouga

Car Travel time: Treat as a full travel day

The road to Merzouga crosses oasis country and reaches Erg Chebbi after a long drive. Choose one substantial valley stop rather than rushing through both major gorges.

Supplier examples for the road, stays and meals

For two sharing, these examples cover one Marrakech night, one Ouarzazate night, two Merzouga nights, meals and two driving days, not a full trip quote. The driver sum uses a published day rate rather than a route-specific fare; onward travel needs its own fare. US dollar equivalents use 9 October 2026 reference rates.

Two days with a private driver MerzougaWay lists MAD 1,500–2,500 (≈ US$155–255) per day with vehicle, fuel and driver costs. This does not price the heritage stop or an empty return.
Two day rates total MAD 3,000–5,000 (≈ US$310–515); route extras unquoted
Marrakech: one double room Dar Attajmil includes breakfast for two; local taxes are MAD 33 (≈ US$3) per person extra. High season may require three nights.
From MAD 1,045 (≈ US$105) for one night
Ouarzazate: one double room These two-person rates include breakfast and apply to the mini room and Boughanim double outside low season until 31 October 2026. Request a fresh quote for later dates.
€39–63 (≈ US$45–70) for one night at Dar Bladi
Merzouga: two double nights This example moves from Kasbah Mohayut to Tassili in Erg Znaigui, about 20 minutes from central Merzouga; Tassili includes dinner, breakfast and a return 4×4 transfer.
From €280 (≈ US$315) for two nights, one room and one tent
Other meals for two Planning allowance for about 12–14 paid meals and drinks; Chez Nabil's Ouarzazate menu is one price example, not a route-wide tariff.
Allow MAD 1,200–1,800 (≈ US$125–185)

Booking tips

  • Ask for a written two-day quote covering the Ait-Ben-Haddou visit, driver costs and any empty-vehicle return. A published day rate is a starting point, not a confirmed fare for your exact route.
  • Compare a road-accessible Merzouga room with a tent by checking the meals, bathroom and camp transfer included. The room and tent examples below come from different properties, so confirm their locations before booking.
  • If Fes is next, request a Merzouga-origin transfer quote. A published Fes-to-Merzouga fare runs in the opposite direction and does not price your departure.

Merzouga

Questions before booking the desert road

Does this route return to Marrakech?

No. This five-day itinerary finishes in Merzouga after breakfast and a final short view of Erg Chebbi. Returning to Marrakech requires a separate travel day and transport booking; allow for both before committing to the four nights.

Can I reach Merzouga in one day from Marrakech?

Yes, a direct private transfer is advertised at about nine hours before a proper heritage visit. It is a tiring way to reach the dunes. This plan instead crosses the Atlas on day two, sleeps in Ouarzazate and continues east on day three.

Should I sleep in a camp?

Only if the overnight experience is worth the extra coordination to you. A dune-edge room also gives access to Erg Chebbi. Before booking a camp, check its meeting point, transfer, meals, bathroom and temperature control.

Is winter a good season?

Winter can bring clear light and cold nights, but poor weather makes mountain roads hazardous. Keep the Atlas crossing flexible, check conditions shortly before departure and confirm the camp or room can keep you warm.

What about summer?

Summer heat makes a long midday dune walk a poor choice. Plan short outdoor periods in cooler hours, keep water available and use the middle of the day for shade and rest. Choose another season for extended walking.

How much time should I give Ait-Ben-Haddou?

Allow roughly two to three hours if you want to explore the lanes, climb towards the communal granary and pause at the village. A shorter visit is possible, but keep the remaining daylight for the road to Ouarzazate.
