Walk Plitvice, Paklenica and Krka on a drive from Zagreb to Split Airport, with two nights in Šibenik.
This week links three different landscapes on the journey south from Zagreb: Plitvice’s lakes and wooded paths, Paklenica’s limestone canyon and Krka’s waterfalls. Six nights across four bases leave a full walking day in Paklenica and two evenings in Šibenik. The last day ends at Split Airport; it does not include a visit to central Split.
A hire car makes the park entrances, guesthouses and final airport journey easier to combine. Collect it after the Zagreb stay, then keep it through departure. Stay near Plitvice before the lake walk, and choose a room in Starigrad for the Paklenica day. Šibenik is the final base for Krka and some city sightseeing. Book the Plitvice entrance and time before the nearby room, and keep the mountain day flexible around the forecast.
Stay at a property whose distance from your booked entrance is clear. An early start gives you time for a signed walking programme, lunch and the drive towards Starigrad. Choose a shorter lake route if the longer circuit would make the onward journey tiring.
Use Velika Paklenica, Entrance 1. The walk towards Lugarnica can fill a morning and part of the afternoon, including the return. Manita peć cave is an alternative on its opening days, with a substantial uphill approach. The next morning allows only a shorter outing before driving south.
Leave your bags at the same accommodation while you visit Skradinski buk. Return for the waterfront, cathedral or dinner in the old streets. Having two nights here also lets you choose a city visit according to how tired you feel after the parks.

Plitvice’s lake walks and waterfalls
Choose a room near the entrance on your ticket, with parking and dinner available nearby. The Plitvice name covers a wide area. Ask about breakfast and storing luggage after checkout, since you will walk the lakes before continuing south.
Watch out: Entrances 1 and 2 are about three kilometres apart. Match the room and drive to the entrance on the ticket.

A coastal base for Velika Paklenica walks
Stay in central Starigrad or near the road to Velika Paklenica, with parking at the property. The map pin marks the coastal town, not the park gate. Ask how you will reach Entrance 1 and where you can eat after the walk.
Watch out: The route uses Velika Paklenica, Entrance 1. Mala Paklenica is a more demanding route for experienced hikers.

St James’s Cathedral, fortresses and access to Krka
A room near the old centre suits evening walks, provided you know the unloading and parking arrangements. Rural stays around Lozovac or Bilice can suit drivers, but add road journeys for dinner and sightseeing. Compare the address with your Krka entrance.

Take the airport connection that suits your landing and leave your bags at the accommodation. For a central stay, walk through Zrinjevac and the Lower Town gardens towards Ban Jelačić Square, with time for coffee or dinner nearby. If you arrive early and want a longer walk, continue through the Stone Gate towards St Mark’s Square in Upper Town. The church’s patterned tiled roof is a good landmark even when you do not visit the interior. Leave the rental collection until tomorrow so you do not have to arrange central parking tonight. With a late arrival, go straight to the room and eat nearby. Confirm tomorrow’s rental branch and the Plitvice admission booked for day three.
Overnight: Zagreb
Have breakfast and choose a short city visit before collecting the car. Dolac’s food market and surrounding streets are convenient from the main square; the Lower Town gardens offer another easy walk. Inspect the vehicle at collection and confirm the fuel, insurance, deposit and Split Airport return arrangements. Allow roughly two to three hours driving to your Plitvice accommodation, with extra time for a break and traffic. Check in during the afternoon, have a meal nearby and confirm the entrance, parking and breakfast plans for tomorrow. Leave the lakes for tomorrow rather than buying an extra ticket for this afternoon. Keep the evening quiet and prepare water, a rain layer and footwear with grip for the park paths.
Overnight: Plitvice Lakes
Start at the entrance and time on your ticket. Programme C from Entrance 1 visits both lake areas over eight kilometres; the park lists four to five hours, including the boat and panoramic vehicle. Programme B is a shorter Lower Lakes option, four kilometres and three to four hours. Check current routes, and allow additional time for queues, photographs and lunch. Choose B if a longer walk would leave you tired for the drive. Swimming is not permitted in the lakes. Afterwards, collect your bags and allow around two to three hours driving towards Starigrad-Paklenica, plus a break. Check current road conditions before setting off. Keep arrival to check-in and dinner, then look at the forecast before deciding tomorrow’s walk.
Overnight: Starigrad-Paklenica
Use Velika Paklenica, Entrance 1, and ask staff about current conditions. One option is the walk from the main canyon parking area towards Lugarnica: the park gives four kilometres and about 90 minutes one way. Allow the return, lunch and breaks as well, and turn back earlier if needed. A cave visit is an alternative on a confirmed opening day. Reaching Manita peć takes about 90 minutes uphill, followed by a guided visit of roughly 30 minutes and the descent. Its limited opening window requires an early start. Carry water, food and a layer; do not rely on a refreshments stop being open. Follow marked routes and tell someone your intended return time. Mala Paklenica is not an easier alternative.
Overnight: Starigrad-Paklenica
After yesterday’s walk, you can spend the morning by the sea before heading south. In suitable conditions, a shorter park visit is another option: ask about the Pjeskarica educational path or the Paklarić viewpoint trail. The latter climbs to a viewpoint and is still an outdoor walk, so it is not a substitute during dangerous wind or rain. The Underground Secrets visitor centre, when open, has displays about the park in former bunkers. A second park visit needs valid admission; compare the three-day pass with two single entries. Have lunch and allow about an hour and a half driving to Šibenik, plus traffic and a stop. After checking in, explore the waterfront and the square around St James’s Cathedral. Save an interior or fortress visit for when it fits the opening hours and your energy.
Overnight: Šibenik
Choose the entrance before leaving Šibenik. Lozovac has free visitor parking and a seasonal park bus; the walking approach is 875 metres. From Skradin, paid town parking is followed by an approximately 20-minute park boat, or a 3.4-kilometre walking approach. Around Skradinski buk, follow the signed 1.9-kilometre circuit of paths, stairs and bridges, stopping at the watermills and viewpoints. Swimming here is prohibited. The 2026 price list includes the Lozovac bus and Skradin boat from 1 April to 31 October; check actual operating times and your return. An optional boat excursion to Visovac takes additional time and costs extra. Ask about it on site rather than assuming it is included or reservable online. Otherwise, return to Šibenik for a relaxed afternoon and dinner.
Overnight: Šibenik
For an early flight, leave Šibenik directly after collecting your bags. With a later departure, you may have time for St Michael’s Fortress or the cathedral interior before the drive; check current opening and allow time to get back to the car. Plan roughly an hour on the road to Split Airport, with additional time for traffic, refuelling and the rental handover. Follow the return address in the agreement, which may differ from the passenger terminal entrance. Keep the fuel receipt and arrange an out-of-hours return in advance if needed. Work backwards from the airline’s check-in requirement when choosing your departure time. A visit to central Split needs additional time, so add a night if you want to explore the palace rather than ending the trip at the airport.

Zagreb Plitvice Lakes
Drive towards the park area using the accommodation’s address, then check how it connects to your booked entrance. A room near Entrance 2 is a different arrival from a guesthouse farther north or beside Entrance 1.

Plitvice Lakes Starigrad-Paklenica
Collect bags after the lake visit and check the open route towards Starigrad. The inland and motorway approaches can be affected by roadworks or weather. Stop for food and rest before driving if the walk has been tiring.
Booking note: Plan for an afternoon or evening check-in. Keep Paklenica hiking for the following day.
Starigrad-Paklenica Šibenik
Choose the motorway or coastal road according to conditions and the time available. Have Šibenik’s parking and unloading instructions ready before arrival; the final walk to an old-centre room may involve stairs.

Traffic, roadworks and weather can change the journey. The final Šibenik–Split Airport drive is described on day seven; it does not add another overnight stop.

Live results can include central Šibenik, Lozovac and Bilice. A waterfront room and a rural villa have different journeys to dinner, the cathedral and the park. Read each address and ask about parking before comparing prices; these results are not restricted to the old-centre edge.
Markers locate Zagreb, Plitvice, Starigrad-Paklenica and Šibenik. They do not mark each park entrance or give driving directions. Split Airport is the departure point described on day seven. On a phone, zoom out to see the northern stops; hotel results depend on dates and availability.
Šibenik
Plitvice’s C programme covers eight kilometres, while B is four kilometres. At Paklenica, a return walk to Lugarnica is roughly eight kilometres before any extra wandering; turn back sooner if needed. Krka’s Skradinski buk circuit is 1.9 kilometres, with additional walking from the entrance if you do not use transport. Steps and uneven surfaces are part of the trip.
At Plitvice, match the ticket and hotel to the entrance for your chosen programme. At Paklenica, use Entrance 1, Velika Paklenica; Mala Paklenica requires experienced hikers. For Krka, Lozovac suits free parking and the seasonal bus, while Skradin adds a boat approach and paid town parking. Return to the entrance where you left the car.
Choose Manita peć as the main outing: allow about 90 minutes uphill, a guided visit of roughly 30 minutes and the descent. Regular hours are 10:00–13:00 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays in May, June and October, and daily in July–September. April visits are on Saturdays. Recheck the operating day and arrive at the cave at least 30 minutes before closing. Bring a layer for the cool interior and cash for its separate ticket.
Do not swim in Plitvice’s lakes or at Skradinski buk. For a sea swim, use a suitable coastal spot during the Starigrad stay, subject to conditions. Krka has separate rules for designated swimming areas elsewhere; the waterfall walk described here is a sightseeing visit.
Ask park staff about the conditions and choose a shorter visit only when it is suitable. An open visitor centre may provide an alternative, but reaching it still requires access into the canyon. The next morning offers some flexibility before Šibenik, not another unrestricted full day. Keep accommodation and departure plans realistic rather than trying to recover every missed kilometre.
The final drive ends at Split Airport. Add a Split night if you want time in the palace neighbourhood, rather than arranging it around a car-return deadline. Dubrovnik needs a longer extension south. Keeping this week to the three parks leaves room for walks, meals and rests as well as the drives.
