Three coastal cities, two nights in each

Begin with Zadar’s Forum, peninsula streets and waterfront, continue to Šibenik for its cathedral and hillside views, then finish among Split’s palace lanes and cafés. Two nights at each base give you one full day in each city, alongside the arrival or transfer afternoon. The route needs two intercity buses, with no rental car or island crossing.

Day four is the main choice: stay in Šibenik for more heritage sights, or visit Skradinski buk in Krka National Park and return to the same room. For the park, match the dated ŠIKBUS service to Skradin with both park boats and the bus home, or book a priced return transfer.

Fly into Zadar and out of Split if the flights suit. Compare the complete cost with a return flight through one airport, including the extra mainland journey. May, June and September are useful months to investigate, but accommodation, buses and park operations still need checks for your actual dates.

Zadar’s streets and waterfront

Use the full day for the Forum, Kalelarga and People’s Square, with a break indoors when it is hot. The Sea Organ and neighbouring Greeting to the Sun make an easy waterfront return later.

Šibenik with an optional waterfall day

Visit St James’s Cathedral after the bus arrival if time allows. The next day can stay in the city for a fortress and Civitas Sacra, or focus on Krka with return transport arranged.

A full day in Split before departure

Explore the palace gates, Peristyle and market, then choose Varoš and lower Marjan paths or Bačvice. Sleep in Split again and leave the following day for the airport.

How can I travel from Zadar to Split in seven days?

Spend nights one and two in Zadar, three and four in Šibenik, and five and six in Split. Travel between the main bus stations on days three and five; each coastal bus takes roughly an hour and a half before traffic delays. Day four is either a full Šibenik day or a return outing to Krka. Keep day seven for the Split airport journey, with time for the hotel-to-station walk and the airline’s arrival deadline.

Diocletian’s Palace, the Riva and nearby neighbourhoods

Stay near the historic centre for the palace and evening walks. Varoš lies towards Marjan; Bačvice suits a beach afternoon. A room nearer the bus and rail stations can simplify the airport departure. Compare the final walk, stairs and noise at each property.

Watch out: Historic buildings may have no lift, and taxis cannot reach every palace lane. Confirm the actual access.

Seven days from Zadar to Split

Arrival is in Zadar, with bus moves on days three and five. You return to the same Šibenik room after either version of day four.

1 Day 1 Arrive in Zadar and walk the Riva Bus

Check the airport bus for your arrival month and choose the stop that fits the room. The current one-way fare is €5 (about US$6), including luggage. The peninsula, main bus station and Gaženica are distinct stops; a late flight may need a quoted taxi or transfer instead. After leaving bags, walk along the Riva towards the Sea Organ. Waves move air through pipes beneath the steps, so the sound changes with the sea. Continue to Greeting to the Sun if it is after dark, or return another evening for its light display. A short waterfront walk and dinner are enough after a late arrival.

2 Day 2 Walk Zadar’s peninsula and choose an indoor visit On foot

Start at the Land Gate and continue through People’s Square and Kalelarga towards the Forum and St Donatus. Choose one museum or church interior that interests you, checking its own opening hours and any worship restrictions. Leave time for lunch and an indoor break in hot weather. The tourism board’s access guide distinguishes the Sea Organ’s level upper edge from its lower steps, which need assistance, and the Forum’s pavement-level view from its lower area without a ramp. Return along the waterfront later, then save tomorrow’s bus ticket and check the journey from the room to the main bus station.

3 Day 3 Take the bus to Šibenik and explore the old town Bus

Book a departure from Zadar’s main bus station that leaves time for the Šibenik afternoon. Arriva describes the coastal journey as about an hour and a half; allow extra for summer traffic and boarding. Hold luggage can incur a separate charge, so check the carrier’s terms. Leave bags at the accommodation before visiting St James’s Cathedral and its carved exterior, entering only when visitor access permits. If you want St Michael’s Fortress today, check closing time and last admission first. Otherwise keep it for tomorrow’s city option. Standard adult entry currently costs €11.50 (about US$13); the three-fortress ticket is €15 (about US$17), useful only if you will visit the others.

4 Day 4 Choose Šibenik sights or a day at Krka Bus

For a city day, visit St Michael’s if you missed it, explore the lanes and add Civitas Sacra for the cathedral’s history. For Krka instead, check the dated ŠIKBUS line 54 to Skradin and its return before buying park admission. The current autumn workday table includes journeys of about 40 minutes; other seasons and weekends differ. Match the bus with both park boats and leave a return margin. The 2026 ticket includes the Skradin–Skradinski buk boat from 1 April to 31 October, subject to operation. Walk the 1.9-kilometre circuit; swimming at Skradinski buk is prohibited. Leave the main bag in Šibenik: the park has no luggage storage. If the public buses do not fit, get a return-transfer quote or keep the city day.

5 Day 5 Continue to Split for the palace and Riva Bus

Travel from Šibenik’s main bus station to Split’s terminal beside the ferry port and railway station. The operator’s route description gives roughly an hour and a half, with road traffic affecting the actual arrival. Choose a daytime service that leaves room for check-in and lunch rather than attaching a timed attraction booking to the bus arrival. After dropping bags, walk into the palace area and find Peristyle and the Vestibule. The surrounding streets remain part of the city, while the cathedral and the exhibition areas of the substructures have separate tickets and visiting hours. Finish with a walk and dinner along the Riva or in a nearby lane.

Overnight: Split

6 Day 6 Spend a full day in Split On foot

Begin at the Golden Gate and walk towards Peristyle, choosing a paid cathedral or substructures visit if it interests you. Continue through the eastern Silver Gate to the Pazar market while stalls are operating, then stop for lunch. For the afternoon, head west through Varoš towards Marjan’s lower paths, choosing the walk to suit the heat, footing and your mobility. Bačvice, east of the transport terminals, is an alternative for time by the sea. There is no need to fit both sides of the city into the same afternoon. Before dinner, confirm the next day’s airport bus, its departure point and the time needed to get there from the room.

7 Day 7 Leave Split for the airport Bus

Use the current Platanus city-to-airport timetable for your exact date. Its direct shuttle leaves from platform 1 at Split’s main bus station, beside the main entrance. A one-way ticket is €10 (about US$11), including one suitcase. Buy online or at the station ticket office; the operator does not sell outbound tickets through the driver. The advertised journey is about 30 minutes, with summer congestion able to extend it. Add the walk from the room, boarding time, a road-delay margin and your airline’s airport-arrival requirement. For an exceptionally early flight, compare moving the sixth night to an airport-area room; that replaces the last Split night rather than adding a seventh one.

Leave Zadar’s main bus station for Šibenik’s terminal on Draga, close to the waterfront. After arrival, allow time to collect bags and reach the room; some old-town approaches climb.

The main-station bus arrives in Split beside the ferry and railway terminals. A daytime departure leaves an afternoon for the palace area after check-in and a meal.

Is seven days enough for all three cities?

With two nights in each, you have an arrival or transfer afternoon and one full day per city. Use day four for either more Šibenik sights or Krka. If you want a separate beach day, an island stay or another national park, add nights or remove a base rather than increasing the daily travel.

Can I visit Zadar, Šibenik and Split without driving?

The main bus stations connect all three bases, so you can make the city journey by public transport. Choose rooms around their actual approach from the station. A Krka outing needs its own dated bus-and-boat plan or a booked return transfer; it is not included in the intercity bus tickets.

Are the bus journey times and baggage charges fixed?

The route pages describe about an hour and a half per coastal leg, but the selected service and traffic determine the journey. Arriva carries hand luggage free of charge if it fits safely above or below the seat; hold luggage can cost extra and other carriers may apply different terms. Check the ticket’s operator, total fare and baggage allowance.

How much is Krka entry, and is the Skradin boat included?

For a standard adult in 2026, all-land-site entry is €20 (about US$22) in April, May and October, or €40 (about US$45) in June–September before the late-entry rate applies. The table includes the Skradin return boat from April to October. Extra excursions cost more; the Šibenik–Skradin road journey is separate.

Which Split bus should I use for the airport?

The current direct Platanus shuttle uses platform 1 at the main bus station near the port. Its one-way fare is €10 (about US$11), including one suitcase. Check the city-to-airport timetable for your date and buy online or at the ticket office. Allow traffic delays as well as the airline’s required airport arrival time.

Will an old-town room be easy with a suitcase?

Check the individual property rather than relying on an old-town label. Šibenik’s higher lanes and many historic buildings involve steps; a Split palace address may be beyond taxi access. Zadar’s tourism board also distinguishes level waterfront access from lower steps. Ask for the exact route and any lift details before booking.
