At a taverna, ask about dakos, the rusk-based salad, or apaki, marinated and smoked pork. Kalitsounia are small sweet or savoury pies, so check the filling rather than expecting one standard version. The day can absorb a disrupted earlier visit, but a substantial delay still requires choosing which museum matters more. Keep the third night in Heraklion before moving west.

The harbour's lighthouse is associated with the Egyptian period, even though the harbour itself is Venetian. The afternoon belongs to the long town beach or a shaded indoor visit, according to wind, heat and the actual opening notices. Check religious buildings for respectful access instead of assuming every historic doorway is an attraction. A taverna meal can continue the Cretan food thread with local cheeses or small pies; ask what is made that day. Keep tonight in Rethymno, with the inland outing reserved for tomorrow.

Otherwise, give the lanes and waterfront a slower day and walk toward Nea Hora for a swim or a fish-taverna meal when conditions suit. Collect the rental late today only if tomorrow's Kissamos or coast plan needs it. Confirm where the car can stand overnight and how the day 10 airport return works.
