Let the Sporades grow quieter as you travel east

Start with Skiathos Town, where the airport, beach buses and harbour make a practical two-night base. Move to Skopelos Town for another two nights: a stepped town walk followed by one local rental day linking Agios Ioannis with a west-coast beach. Finish with two nights in Patitiri on Alonnisos, visiting Old Chora and choosing a marine-park boat or marked walk.

Book the two eastbound transfers and the day-7 ferry to Volos before fixing flights and six hotel nights. Skopelos Town, Glossa/Loutraki and Agnontas are different ports; select the main town for this plan unless you deliberately arrange another transfer. The car is collected on day 4 and returned that evening within one agreed billed day.

Each island receives one full day. That makes seven days workable but brisk: this is a harbour-based route with swims, literary and maritime history, and time in a protected seascape. Returning to Skiathos airport needs an extra night outside the plan; Skyros belongs to a separate trip.

The energy falls in the right direction

Skiathos starts with a bus-served beach day and time in the town associated with Papadiamantis. Skopelos adds a road day and tiled-roof lanes, while Alonnisos finishes with Old Chora and a conservation-led outing.

Skopelos is more than its film location

Give Skopelos Town its own arrival walk, then collect the car the next morning. Agios Ioannis, Glossa and one west-coast beach share a single day, with the vehicle returned that evening before the next ferry.

Alonnisos changes the purpose of a boat day

Choose the marine park for its seascape and interpretation. Ask which zone the boat enters and what admission covers, respect closed areas and keep a marked land walk available if wind prevents the excursion.

Best for

  • Swimmers who value green shorelines and short inter-island passages
  • Travellers comfortable arranging one road day and one regulated boat excursion

StartBooker answer

How can Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonnisos fit into one week?

Fly into Skiathos, stay two nights in Skiathos Town, two in Skopelos Town and two in Patitiri on Alonnisos. Travel east as foot passengers, use one local rental day on Skopelos and reserve Alonnisos’s full day for a permitted marine-park excursion or a marked walk. Finish on day 7 with a separately booked ferry to Volos; that mainland exit is included in the budget. Confirm all three dated sailings before flights and rooms. Returning to Skiathos for a flight needs an additional overnight buffer outside this six-night plan; independent ferry and airline tickets do not protect each other.

Stay in Skiathos Town for the airport transfer, ferry and beach buses. Two nights cover arrival and one Koukounaries day without a rental. Ask about aircraft and nightlife noise, and check the luggage route to your actual room.

The ferry harbour below Old Chora and access to the marine park

Patitiri is the practical Alonnisos base for ferries and excursion boats. Spend two nights near the port, visit Old Chora with a confirmed return journey and keep the full day for a permitted boat or marked walk. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed.

Seven days from an airport harbour to a marine park

Each island gets one full day. Keep transfer days free until the actual sailing and port are confirmed; the final day ends in Volos on the mainland.

1 Day 1 Land beside Skiathos Town and orient around the harbour

Transfer from Skiathos Airport, leave luggage and walk the waterfront toward Bourtzi. The airport, town and port make a convenient gateway, but aircraft and nightlife noise vary by street; ask about the actual room. Locate tomorrow's beach-bus stop and the ferry check-in point before choosing an unhurried harbour evening. Skiathos also has a literary history: Papadiamantis wrote about the island's ordinary people, churches and customs, making his house-museum a useful visit when its current opening fits. For dinner, look for seafood cooked with horta, the local wild greens, or kalapodia, a greens pie. These connect the island's fishing and farming traditions.

  • Airport arrival
  • Bourtzi and harbour walk
  • Bus and ferry points located

Base: Skiathos Town

2 Day 2 Use the beach bus as a west-coast sampler

Ride the current island bus toward Koukounaries, checking the day's route and return service before boarding. The broad sandy shore and pine setting make this the main beach stop; another reachable cove is optional, rather than a reason to spend the whole day changing buses. Carry water and shade, and leave before the final possible return. Back in Skiathos Town, visit the Papadiamantis house if it is open, then continue through lanes shaped by the modern town's nineteenth-century revival. Earlier inhabitants had withdrawn to the northern Kastro because of pirate attacks; that remote site is a separate outing, not an extra stop squeezed into this beach day. An evening sweet might be aspro, made with almonds, syrup and lemon, or hamalia, fried pastry parcels with nuts and honey.

  • Koukounaries
  • One secondary beach
  • Reliable return to town

Base: Skiathos Town

3 Day 3 Ferry east and climb through Skopelos Town

Board the dated eastbound sailing after checking that its Skopelos call is the main town, rather than Glossa/Loutraki or Agnontas. From the main harbour, reach the lodging by the agreed walking route or short transfer; ask about steps before carrying bags uphill. Walk through tiled-roof houses and churches toward the kastro view, turning back when the climb stops being comfortable. The island's ancient name, Peparethos, and its wine trade add context beyond the film locations; the name Skopelos belongs to the Roman period. At a bakery or taverna, try the twisted local cheese pie, and ask about locally grown plums and other seasonal products. Arrange tomorrow's car handover and parking, but collect the vehicle tomorrow morning: collecting it this evening and returning tomorrow evening could create another billed period.

  • Short Sporades crossing
  • Skopelos Town climb
  • Local car arranged

Base: Skopelos Town

4 Day 4 Link pine beaches with Agios Ioannis

Collect a compact rental for one agreed billed day and check the vehicle, permitted roads, cover and return hours. Leave early for Agios Ioannis at Kastri and its exposed rock steps, pairing the north of the island with Glossa before choosing one west-coast beach such as Milia or Kastani. Skip the chapel ascent if the steps, heat or conditions are unsuitable; the coastal view still explains its setting. Pine-backed water and time to swim should receive as much attention as the film association. Narrow roads, bends and limited parking call for a modest route and a daylight return, rather than a race through every named bay. Refuel and return the car this evening within the office hours and billed period agreed at collection. Non-drivers can substitute an excursion that explicitly includes the chapel area and beach time, repricing its actual inclusions.

  • Agios Ioannis Kastri
  • Glossa or one west-coast beach
  • Car returned within one billed day

Base: Skopelos Town

5 Day 5 Cross to Patitiri, then see Old Chora at sunset

With the car already returned, reach the correct Skopelos quay for the short eastbound crossing to Patitiri. The ferry arrival and luggage transfer come first; an afternoon or evening sailing leaves less time than a morning departure. Visit Old Chora only when the bus or taxi return is confirmed, keeping the afternoon flexible if the boat arrives late. Its medieval lanes have a more recent story too: the 1965 earthquake prompted residents to leave the old settlement, and Patitiri became the island's main administrative and commercial centre. Restored houses now bring life back to Chora, so it should not be described as an abandoned village. At dinner, ask about Alonnisos tuna preserved in olive oil or kakavia, a fish soup with potatoes and tomatoes.

  • Correct Skopelos departure port
  • Patitiri arrival
  • Old Chora evening

Base: Patitiri (Alonnisos)

6 Day 6 Enter protected waters without demanding a sighting

Take a permitted excursion from Patitiri when conditions suit, asking which islands and zones it actually visits. The marine park was established in 1992; protection, scenery and interpretation are the purpose, and a monk seal sighting is never guaranteed. Zone A requires a separate admission arrangement, while Piperi's core is closed to ordinary visitor boats within three nautical miles: buying a ticket does not open that exclusion zone. Follow the crew's permitted swimming and landing instructions and avoid wildlife pursuit. If wind cancels the boat, ask locally about the current condition of a marked walk, such as the Patitiri–Votsi–Mega Nero route, with water, footwear and a realistic turnaround. Do not replace a gentle walk with the long Great Traverse simply because both appear in a trail guide.

  • Marine-park briefing
  • Licensed boat or mapped trail
  • No wildlife pursuit

Base: Patitiri (Alonnisos)

7 Day 7 Take the booked mainland ferry to Volos

Check out for the separately booked Patitiri–Volos ferry and follow the operator's current check-in instructions. This is the third paid ferry ticket, after the two island transfers, and is included in the budget. The published Aegean Flying Dolphins summer programme runs back through Skopelos and Skiathos to Volos, but dates, vessels and notices must be checked for your actual journey; a conventional service may take longer. Keep the day for this exit and finish the itinerary at Volos port. An onward mainland hotel, bus or flight is outside these six room nights and must be arranged separately with suitable time for disruption. If you instead need a Skiathos flight, return to that island and add an overnight buffer outside the seven-day plan. Independent ferry and airline tickets are separate bookings, so neither a timetable match nor a long same-day gap creates a protected connection.

  • Dated Patitiri–Volos ticket
  • Third ferry cost included
  • Mainland continuation booked separately

Base: Patitiri (Alonnisos)

Ride one ferry spine eastward

Both hops sit on the same island chain, but Skopelos has multiple port names that must match the ticket and hotel.

2 transfers

  1. Skiathos Town Skopelos Town

Ferry Travel time: About 1 hour to the main town; vessel and calls vary

Choose Skopelos Town for this base. Glossa/Loutraki is a different harbour, and operational changes can use Agnontas; a shorter advertised crossing may require a longer road transfer.

  2. Skopelos Town Patitiri (Alonnisos)

Ferry Travel time: About 25–30 minutes from Skopelos Town

Confirm the departure port and the actual eastbound date. The short crossing does not guarantee a morning arrival, so move Old Chora to the full day if the sailing reaches Patitiri late.

Booking tips

  • Book the two island transfers and the day-7 Patitiri–Volos exit before flights and six room nights. Current tickets and operational notices control the journey.
  • Match the two Skopelos tickets to the main town. A different arrival or departure harbour needs a separate transfer quote, rather than an assumed short walk.
  • Collect the Skopelos car on day 4 morning and return it that evening within the agreed billed period. Compare a tour for non-drivers using its full inclusions.
  • Ask the Alonnisos boat operator which zone it enters, whether admission and food are included, what happens in wind, and when it returns. A park ticket never permits entry to the closed Piperi core.
  • Dollar comparisons use the ECB’s 20 October 2026 rate of 1.1215 USD per euro, rounded to whole dollars. Allowances are in euros; actual payable rates, taxes and dated quotes may differ.

Northern Sporades

Planning the Sporades without missed ports

Are two nights on each island enough?

They are the minimum for one defining full day apiece. Anyone wanting several beaches on Skiathos or multiple marine days should add nights rather than introduce a fourth island.

Which Skopelos port should I use?

Skopelos Town is the base used here. Check the printed port for both crossings: Glossa/Loutraki and Agnontas are separate harbours, so an alternative sailing needs a priced road transfer and extra time. Reconfirm operational notices before each departure.

Will I see a Mediterranean monk seal?

Possibly, but never reliably. Choose the marine park for protected scenery and informed interpretation, follow distance rules and reject any operator that treats wildlife pursuit as a promise.

Do I need a vehicle on all three islands?

No. Skiathos uses beach buses, Skopelos has one local rental collected on day 4 morning and returned that evening, and Alonnisos uses a boat, walking and local transfers. Confirm the car’s billed period and return hours; no vehicle is carried between islands.

Can I fly from Skiathos on day seven?

This version finishes at Volos port on day 7. If a Skiathos flight is essential, return to Skiathos and add an overnight buffer outside the six-night itinerary. The ferry and flight remain independent bookings; a same-day timetable match is not a protected connection.

Why is Skyros absent?

Skyros belongs to a different transport pattern and cannot be added as another short eastbound hop. It merits a separate itinerary rather than a rushed extension to this ferry spine.

Where is the best place to swim on this route?

Skiathos has the easiest bus-served sand, Skopelos combines deep green water with pine-backed coves, and Alonnisos rewards a conservation-led boat or a quieter reachable beach. The correct answer depends on mobility and wind: choose Koukounaries for simple access, one west-coast Skopelos bay for road scenery, or Alonnisos when the protected seascape matters most. Keep one alternative shore in reserve because local wind can make yesterday's ideal bay the wrong choice today.

How should travellers handle seasickness?

Select the larger or steadier vessel when the schedule offers a choice, sit according to crew advice and avoid making the last possible sailing essential. Medication requires personal medical guidance before travel. A poor forecast can justify changing a beach day or using a mainland connection; it should never be ignored because the published crossing looks short.

What luggage works for three ferry check-ins?

A compact wheeled case or backpack that one traveller can control on ramps and uneven harbour paving is preferable to several loose bags. Keep medicines, documents, water and a light layer in a smaller personal item. Ask each property whether the approach has stairs, because a short map distance in Skopelos Town or Old Chora can still require a steep climb.
