Eastern Express Ankara to Kars in 7 days

Arrive in Ankara and settle into the Ulus side of the city. Gençlik Park and the streets around the old centre offer an easy first walk, with the citadel district left for tomorrow. Radisson Blu’s Ulus location is the lodging example used in the budget; its proximity to the museum quarter and main station serves this particular railway week. A Kızılay room is an alternative if evening restaurants matter more, with another transfer toward the historic core. From Esenboğa, AnkaraAir serves the city via its published airport and central stops; choose the stop closest to the actual room rather than treating the entire capital as one destination. After a long arrival, a local meal is enough. Bring bottled water and ordinary snacks for the train, and separate the small overnight bag from larger luggage. There is no need to collect a first-day monument before you have slept.

Begin with Anıtkabir, where the mausoleum, ceremonial court and museum put Ankara’s role as the republican capital into focus. Winter visiting hours are 09:00–16:00, so morning works better than saving it for a late afternoon. After lunch, choose the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations and a short citadel-quarter walk. The museum’s upper galleries trace prehistoric and Hittite Anatolia, making a useful counterpart to the morning. Its Ankara and Classical halls are closed for maintenance from 14 September 2026 to 2 March 2027; the remaining collection is the reason to go during this trip. The streets uphill give a different view of the city, but a warm café can replace the climb when surfaces are icy. These are two parts of Ankara linked by local transport, not one continuous short stroll. Keep the evening available for dinner and packing rather than adding a third museum or a distant district.

Leave the hotel for historic Ankara Gar and board the named Touristic Eastern Express. Its eastbound departure is at 13:55 on the published operating days; arrange the station arrival with enough margin for luggage and finding the carriage. Settle into the two-bed compartment and keep a layer nearby rather than burying it in the suitcase. Seats become beds, bedding is provided, and the room includes a basin, socket, small table and fridge; the carriage has shared toilets. The afternoon is for watching the capital recede and the landscape become the holiday’s main subject. Ask the attendant about dining-car reservations or a meal in the room if that suits your evening. Your own snacks belong in the compartment: the railway asks passengers not to take outside food into the restaurant car. A private sleeper offers personal space, but carriage movement and sounds remain part of the night. Avoid scheduling the next morning as though you had slept in a stationary hotel.

The second railway day includes an Erzincan pause before the afternoon stop in Erzurum. Use the latter for one compact historic-core visit or a regional meal, with transport back to the station included in the outing. The Double Minaret Madrasa and nearby Three Mausoleums are a more coherent choice than trying to collect every named monument. The photograph on the train-stage card shows those mausoleums, not the carriage or a separate hotel. Follow the train crew’s return instructions and keep the same compartment to Kars: a sightseeing pause does not create an independent night in Erzurum. TCDD’s planned Kars arrival is 21:52, and it explicitly does not guarantee the timetable. Arrange the hotel check-in and a short station pickup before travelling. On arrival, settle in and rest; the city walk belongs to daylight tomorrow. An excursion during either railway pause is extra unless it is included in a separately purchased package.

Use the first full Kars day to understand the city that the railway has brought you to. Begin among the stone façades and broad streets associated with its Russian-era city plan, then make your way toward the castle quarter. Kümbet Mosque, originally the Church of the Twelve Apostles, sits below the fortress and gives the skyline its distinctive conical roof. A castle viewpoint is optional when the uphill surface is safe; the lower streets remain worthwhile without that climb. Choose a warm lunch featuring local food rather than turning the day into a sequence of distant pickups. The regional cheeses offer another way into Kars’ landscape and traditions, with shops as an easy stop before dinner. This day can exchange places with tomorrow if the clearer weather favours Ani first. Keep the same room for all three nights, so the city day offers rest and a familiar base rather than another checkout and railway connection.

Give Ani an unhurried daylight outing from Kars, roughly 45 kilometres away. The walled site opens onto a plateau above a border ravine, where the remains of churches, a cathedral and a mosque reveal successive Armenian and Islamic chapters of a Silk Road city. Choose a route through the main monuments with time to stop and read the landscape; the value is in their relationship, not a count of buildings reached. Allow a few hours on uneven ground and agree the vehicle’s waiting time and return before leaving town. The current museum listing is open daily, 08:00–17:00, with the ticket office closing at 16:30. That closing time is not a reason to begin late: cold, wind and surface conditions may shorten a comfortable visit. Do not climb fragile remains or wander beyond the visitor area toward the ravine. Return to Kars for a warm meal. Çıldır Lake would require its own road outing and is outside this core day.

Leave Kars according to the booked flight rather than adding one last regional circuit. A later departure may leave time for breakfast and a familiar central street; an early one calls for a direct airport journey. Keep the airport transfer separate from Ani’s vehicle so its date, luggage and destination are clear. For onward international travel on a separate ticket, consider sleeping in the connection city rather than assuming every winter flight will feed the next departure. That extra night also changes the seven-day budget and should be priced as an extension. Returning to Ankara by the tourist train is another itinerary: it departs on different days, uses different sightseeing pauses and takes another long railway period. It cannot replace the day-seven flight without adding time. The basic week finishes with the capital, the full eastbound sleeper, two distinct days in Kars and five hotel nights; there is no unpriced Erzurum room or onward train to arrange.
