Turkey in 14 Days: Istanbul to Ephesus

Arrive at Istanbul Airport or Sabiha Gökçen and travel to the historic-centre hotel. They are different airports, so choose the transfer for the actual ticket. Havaist’s Sultanahmet line is a practical Istanbul Airport option; Sabiha Gökçen needs a longer journey across the metropolis. Once checked in, walk toward Sultanahmet Square or Gülhane Park according to where you stay. The square gives an immediate sense of the mosque domes and the former Hippodrome without needing another ticket. Have dinner nearby and leave the first major interior until tomorrow, when you can arrive with time to look.

Give the morning to Topkapı Palace: its courtyards, council spaces and Bosphorus setting explain how the Ottoman court occupied this headland. The combined foreign-visitor ticket covers the palace, Harem and Hagia Irene. Topkapı closes on Tuesdays; if your second day is Tuesday, exchange this programme with the ferry day. After lunch, walk through Sultanahmet and the former Hippodrome, then descend toward Eminönü. A mosque interior is worthwhile when visitor access permits, with modest dress and a pause for prayer times. Adding the cistern or Hagia Sophia’s paid visitor route would increase both the cost and the time indoors.

Take a municipal ferry to Kadıköy and explore the market streets around the landing. Food shops, fish stalls and places to sit make this a useful change from yesterday’s museum rooms. Eat here before returning to Karaköy; if your energy lasts, continue toward Galata and Beyoğlu rather than adding another palace. The climb from the waterfront is substantial, and the wider circuit can be shortened at Karaköy for travellers who prefer a level day. A public crossing provides the water views without committing to a lengthy sightseeing cruise. Leave tomorrow’s airport journey arranged before the evening ends.

The cost example uses Sabiha Gökçen to Kayseri. Reach Taksim for Havabüs, whose published airport journey is about ninety minutes before traffic delays; allow the airline’s check-in margin on top. An Istanbul Airport departure is a different transfer plan. From Kayseri, a confirmed shared shuttle takes you to Göreme rather than simply to an airport bus stop. This sequence absorbs much of the day even though the flight itself is short. After dropping bags, explore the streets around the room and choose dinner. A sunset viewpoint is a pleasant extra if daylight remains, not a scheduled valley hike.

Start with Göreme Open-Air Museum and concentrate on the painted churches rather than racing between doorways. The Dark Church requires a separate admission, included in the example budget for visitors particularly interested in the frescoes. The museum is an outdoor hillside visit with steps and uneven approaches; it is not a flat indoor collection. After lunch, choose a short valley walk with an established return, or stay with roadside viewpoints if steep terrain is unsuitable. A balloon flight at dawn is optional and separately priced. If you take one, a shorter afternoon keeps the day enjoyable without sacrificing the main museum.

Use a guided circuit for the settlements outside walking distance of Göreme. The costed Green Tour example combines Derinkuyu with landscape stops, an Ihlara panorama and lunch; it does not promise a walk along the canyon river. Its listed programme also includes an onyx workshop, so travellers who dislike shopping stops should choose a different operator or a private outing. Underground passages are narrow and involve steep steps: claustrophobia or reduced mobility can make a surface-only day preferable. That alternative can still explore rock-cut architecture and broad views. Return to the same hotel for the third night rather than moving toward tomorrow’s airport.

Overnight: Göreme

Travel back to Kayseri Airport and fly toward Antalya. SunExpress lists the direct route in its April–October 2026 network, but the exact departure must be checked before booking these two hotel blocks. AJet’s published monthly starting fare is a cost reference and does not establish a nonstop service on your date. If only a protected connecting flight works, devote the whole date to travel; separate tickets add a missed-connection risk. From Antalya Airport, continue to Kaleiçi and drop luggage at the agreed street access point. The old harbour is enough for the evening, with boats below the cliffs and dinner in the nearby lanes.

Overnight: Antalya

Walk the old quarter in the morning, linking Hadrian’s Gate, the lanes and the harbour rather than commuting between distant ruins. Antalya’s Archaeology Museum is currently closed, so it is not the anchor of this day. The free Ethnography Museum in Kaleiçi provides a useful substitute: its two Ottoman mansions show textiles, domestic rooms and regional traditions, including Yörük life. After lunch, leave the afternoon open for a coast outing or another slow old-town walk. Konyaaltı is a separate journey and a pebble beach; choose it if time by the sea matters more than another interior. Tomorrow’s inland coach begins at the main terminal.

Overnight: Antalya

Leave Kaleiçi for Antalya Otogar and take a daytime coach to Denizli. The advertised minimum journey is two hours fifty minutes, before the trip from your room to the terminal and the onward local connection. From Denizli, continue by minibus or taxi to Pamukkale village; the intercity ticket alone does not deliver you to the terraces. With waiting and luggage, plan roughly four to five hours hotel to hotel rather than using the fastest coach time as the whole transfer. On arrival, settle in and locate the pedestrian approach for tomorrow. The village stay gives you an early start without making an extra site visit compulsory tonight.

Make this the full Hierapolis–Pamukkale day. From the village-side approach, follow the permitted barefoot route on the white travertine before exploring the archaeological plateau in suitable shoes. Water is directed through different areas for conservation, so a photograph is not a promise that every pool will be full. Give the theatre and ancient streets time; the necropolis extends the walk farther and is worth including only if your energy allows. The Antique Pool is closed, so a swim there is not part of the plan. Bring water and use a shaded lunch or hotel break instead of stretching the exposed circuit through the hottest hours.

Overnight: Pamukkale

Return from Pamukkale village to Denizli’s terminal for the westbound coach. As a concrete planning example, the Pamukkale booking page displayed a 10:00 departure on 25 October 2026 taking two hours forty-five minutes, operated by Anadolu Ulaşım. Your own date may differ, and the village connection needs enough time to reach the departure comfortably. Once in Selçuk, walk to a central hotel and spend the afternoon orienting yourself around the museum and town centre. Keep Ephesus for its dedicated morning. Agree the gate transport for tomorrow, then enjoy a town dinner without a further change of hotel.

Arrange an early drop-off at the upper gate if you prefer the main route downhill, with collection near the lower gate after the theatre. Ephesus is a large outdoor site; its marble streets, steps and limited shade can be demanding even in autumn. Read the city through its civic spaces, Curetes Street, the Library of Celsus and the theatre, rather than aiming only for the library photograph. The Terrace Houses are an additional ticket and suit visitors who want more detail about domestic interiors. They are optional in this budget. Return to Selçuk after lunch or when concentration fades; the museum has its own place tomorrow.

Visit Ephesus Museum in town before climbing toward Ayasuluk Hill and the Basilica of St John. The museum’s Artemis figures, smaller finds and coins add details that the large ruins alone cannot show. The hill then extends the story beyond the Roman city into later settlement and pilgrimage. This is a compact local day rather than another regional transfer. Şirince can replace the hill outing for travellers keen on a village visit, but it needs road transport and should not be sold as a short walk from central Selçuk. Keep the evening in town; your third consecutive night here belongs to the itinerary.

Take the prearranged transfer to İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport for the onward flight. The example budget includes a private vehicle from Selçuk, which is convenient with luggage and an early departure; the provider publishes a fare for up to five passengers. A suitable daytime regional train may be a cheaper alternative, but check its actual stopping pattern and arrival against check-in before substituting it. There is no fourteenth hotel night in this plan. Travellers with a very early international flight may prefer to move near the airport on the thirteenth evening, accepting the loss of the relaxed Selçuk dinner rather than relying on a tight morning connection.
