This itinerary answers the most common ten-day Turkey problem without hiding its cost: Istanbul, Ephesus and Cappadocia fit, while each inter-region move still takes a meaningful part of a day. The order runs west to east. Istanbul introduces Byzantine, Ottoman and contemporary urban layers; Selçuk creates an unhurried entrance to Ephesus and a second local day; Göreme closes with open terrain and flexible dawns. Ending inland also makes an open-jaw international ticket valuable because it removes a ceremonial return to Istanbul.
Three nights in Selçuk are deliberate. Many compressed plans fly into İzmir, race around Ephesus and leave before the site has a chance to become intelligible. Sleeping locally supports an early entrance, a slow passage from the upper gate through the civic centre, and separate time for the Ephesus Museum, Ayasuluk Hill or Şirince. Kuşadası is a plausible coastal base, especially for travellers who want a promenade or resort hotel. Selçuk wins here because the archaeological visit is the chapter’s priority and the railway connection to İzmir is useful.
The final move carries more uncertainty than the first. Flights between İzmir and the Cappadocia gateways do not create a dependable daily bridge in every season. Search the exact date before committing rooms. When a direct service aligns, use it; when it does not, a protected connection through Istanbul may still beat an exhausting overland night. A long coach is a real option for budget travellers who sleep well in seats, but it should be described as a trade, not a free night. The schedule determines which direction is best, so reversing the whole route is legitimate.
Cappadocia receives two complete days after arrival. One stays within the Göreme-Uçhisar valley system and the open-air museum. The other goes by road to an underground city or Ihlara. That distinction keeps transport honest and makes balloon cancellation survivable. Ten days should feel like three substantial chapters joined by two visible seams. Pamukkale, Antalya and Bodrum remain excellent reasons for a longer journey; inserting one of them here would take the time from neighbourhoods, archaeology or walking while adding another checkout.
