Istanbul → Ankara → Konya → Göreme works without a rental car, using three intercity coaches and local public transport. The nine nights divide 3 + 2 + 2 + 2: two full days in Istanbul, one each in Ankara and Konya, and one in Göreme. Daylight transfer days carry the longer rides; arrival and departure days have lighter plans.
Ankara adds a contrast between the republic’s memorial and older Anatolian collections. Konya brings the Mevlana Museum and Seljuk architecture into a compact walking day. Both stays have a cultural purpose, rather than serving only as breaks on the way to balloons. The Istanbul–Ankara move needs a full travel day, so save the capital’s major visits for the following morning.
Choose the final coach to Göreme’s own terminal where possible; a Nevşehir arrival needs an onward ride. Central Göreme makes its one full day usable on foot. This route suits travellers content with a local museum-and-valley day, rather than distant trailheads or several underground cities. YHT trains can replace the first two coaches after their tickets and costs are confirmed separately.
Istanbul’s first full day stays around the Historic Peninsula; the second crosses to the Asian shore by municipal ferry. The boat makes the geography visible while carrying you to lunch and neighbourhood streets. Keeping these days separate gives the opening stop both an imperial and an everyday setting before the inland coach journey.
The capital pairs Anıtkabir’s account of the republic with the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations near the citadel. Their settings differ as much as their collections, so allow a cross-city ride. The museum’s Ankara and Classical halls are temporarily closed, but the other galleries remain an anchor for this day; two nights protect time to visit them.
Around the Mevlana Museum, the historic centre gives Konya a clear focus before the landscape journey. The green-domed shrine, bazaar streets and Alaeddin Hill fit a day on foot. The coach terminal is separate from the old centre, so leave time for a tram or taxi approach. A stay here adds a distinct cultural stop before the final ride into Göreme.

Ferries, historic districts and the western starting point
Sirkeci serves the Historic Peninsula and gives tram access for the two complete city days. Karaköy puts ferries and Beyoğlu closer but adds a crossing for the old city. Both are sightseeing bases rather than coach-terminal hotels; allow a separate journey to Esenler or Alibeyköy for the Ankara departure.

Republican history, Anatolian collections and a connected centre
Ulus places the citadel and Anatolian museum nearby; Kızılay has broader dining and metro connections for the two-night stay. Neither puts Anıtkabir beside the museum. Choose a central room and allow a ride between those sites rather than paying for a peripheral bargain.
Watch out: The Anatolian museum’s Ankara and Classical halls are closed through 2 March 2027; the rest remains open.

Mevlana heritage, Seljuk monuments and onward road access
The Mevlana precinct lets the shrine, bazaar and evening meal sit within one compact area. A room near the coach terminal saves a transfer but leaves the sights farther away. Keep the old centre as the base and allow separate rides from and back to the otogar on the two movement days.
Watch out: Konya Otogar is outside the historic core; allow a terminal-to-hotel ride after arrival.

Valley access after the inland coach journeys
A central Göreme stay keeps food and nearby paths close for the single full day. A distant panoramic hotel spends that short visit on pickups. Two nights leave time for the open-air museum and one valley; an underground-city tour would replace that walking programme.

Check in and spend the arrival evening on a modest waterfront circuit. Around Eminönü, ferry movements make the Golden Horn easier to understand than a long first-day sightseeing list. Find the route from your room to Sultanahmet, then choose dinner nearby. Airport arrival time determines how much walking fits; a late landing still leaves two complete city days. Buy or load the transport card before those outings so tomorrow can start at the palace rather than at a ticket machine.
Overnight: Istanbul
Use Topkapı Palace as the main paid interior, then follow the Hippodrome and Sultanahmet streets downhill toward Eminönü. Its combined ticket is included in the example budget; other ticketed interiors cost extra. The palace closes on Tuesday, so exchange this programme with the ferry day when necessary. Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque remain places of worship, with access conditions that can interrupt a visitor’s schedule. Their surrounding public spaces still connect the Byzantine and Ottoman landmarks into a useful walk.
Overnight: Istanbul
Take a municipal ferry to Kadıköy or Üsküdar and give the Asian shore the middle of the day. Market streets and an ordinary neighbourhood meal add a different view of Istanbul after yesterday’s imperial grounds. Return with time for a final waterside pause rather than another big interior. For tomorrow, confirm the Ankara coach’s boarding address: Esenler and Alibeyköy are different terminals on the European side. Map the hotel-to-terminal approach before the morning begins and keep the purchased ticket available offline.
Overnight: Istanbul
Use a morning coach to Ankara and keep this as a full travel day. Kamil Koç currently gives a minimum Istanbul Europe–Ankara ride of 6 hours 25 minutes; terminal access, road breaks and traffic add to that. Buy a service arriving at Ankara Otogar, then continue to the central hotel rather than treating the motorway rest stop listed on the route page as a city arrival. Ulus offers older streets, while Kızılay gives a livelier dining choice. Settle in and have dinner nearby. Save Anıtkabir and the major museum for tomorrow, when the two-night stop provides a complete cultural day.

Start at Anıtkabir, where the mausoleum and museum place the founding of the republic in context, then ride across to the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations near the citadel. In October, Anıtkabir’s official visiting window is 09:00–17:00. The archaeological museum stays open, but its Ankara and Classical halls are closed from 14 September 2026 to 2 March 2027; focus on the remaining collections rather than expecting every gallery. Leave time for the citadel streets and a view over the city. Slopes and uneven paving make the final walk more demanding than the indoor visit.

Take the Ankara–Konya coach and continue from Konya Otogar to a room near the historic centre. The operator’s minimum ride is 3 hours 30 minutes, before checkout and local transfers, so give the move a half-day window. Choose an actual service reaching Konya in time for a modest late-afternoon walk around the Mevlana precinct. The green-domed shrine introduces the setting without compressing the museum into a tired arrival. The bus terminal and central sights are separate locations. Use the evening for the bazaar area and a local meal; tomorrow has the longer cultural visit.

Visit the Mevlana Museum for the shrine, manuscripts and objects connected with the dervish community, then walk through the bazaar toward Alaeddin Hill. Admission is free; the ministry lists 09:00–17:00, with Monday opening at 10:00. Nearby Seljuk buildings add an architectural thread, but the current tariff list marks the Karatay Museum closed, so do not plan its interior as a guaranteed visit. Sille is an optional outer excursion that needs more transport time; the central walk is the route’s core. Two nights let Konya stand on its own before the coach journey.
Overnight: Konya
Board the Konya–Göreme coach at the terminal on the ticket. The operator lists a direct service between Konya Otogar and Göreme Otogar; its current minimum ride is about three hours, with slower departures possible. Choose a daylight arrival so the final approach to the hotel is easy to understand. If your selected coach ends in Nevşehir instead, arrange the continuation before boarding. Spend the evening near Göreme, where the rock skyline becomes visible even without a tour. This arrival does not create a second complete Cappadocia day.
Overnight: Göreme
Make Göreme Open-Air Museum the morning anchor and choose one nearby valley walk afterwards. Rock-cut churches and their paintings give the landscape more meaning than a circuit of distant viewpoints. Paths can include loose tuff, steps and exposed slopes, so select a start and finish suited to the weather and the group’s footing. A balloon can fit at dawn if desired, but cancellation should leave this land day intact. An underground-city circuit is an alternative to the museum-and-valley plan, not an additional full programme within the same afternoon.
Overnight: Göreme
Depart by a prearranged shuttle to Kayseri or Nevşehir according to the onward ticket. The collection time can be much earlier than the simple road journey because a shared vehicle serves several hotels. A late flight may leave breakfast and a short central walk; a distant final attraction risks the departure. For a separate international flight from Istanbul, add an eleventh day and tenth night if an overnight buffer is needed. That extension is outside this ten-day coach schedule, as is the onward flight itself.
Base: Göreme
The first journey takes most of a day; the later rides leave more time for the arrival towns. Book city terminals and leave local access outside the stated coach duration.

Kamil Koç’s Istanbul Europe–Ankara page lists Esenler and Alibeyköy departures. Select Ankara Otogar as the arrival, then arrange the final ride to Ulus or Kızılay. The first coach chapter deserves a full day even when the listed minimum looks shorter.

Ankara Konya
Travel from Ankara Otogar to Konya Otogar, then continue to the Mevlana area. A half-day door-to-door allowance covers the published minimum ride, checkout and a separate journey from the terminal into the historic centre.
Booking note: Keep the arrival programme to the bazaar and a meal; the museum has its own full day.
Konya Göreme
Kamil Koç lists Konya Otogar → Göreme Otogar, with a current minimum ride of 3 hours. Buy the precise departure and terminal. A coach sold to Nevşehir needs a further connection to the Göreme hotel.

Published minimum times exclude hotel and terminal access. Buy the dated service and boarding point; traffic and stops can lengthen the ride. A train replacement changes both the ticket cost and the station approach.

Konya
Kamil Koç lists a coach from Konya Otogar to Göreme Otogar. Buy that named arrival where it suits the date; a Nevşehir-only ticket leaves another road connection before the hotel. YHT trains link the earlier cities, but do not carry this route through to Göreme.
Two nights leave a full day for Anıtkabir and the Anatolian museum, with a ride between their different parts of the city. The remaining museum galleries still give that day substance during the temporary Ankara and Classical hall closures. An arrival evening alone would force a choice between the two visits.
Skipping Konya changes the route and frees two nights for other bases. An Ankara–Cappadocia coach would then need its own date and terminal check. Keep Konya if the Mevlana Museum and Seljuk centre interest you; its stay adds a local cultural day before the final coach.
A suitcase can work, though terminal approaches, older pavements and cave-hotel stairs make lighter luggage easier. The hotel benchmark in Kızılay has no lift, so choose another property if steps are a barrier. Read the purchased coach luggage conditions before selecting a large case.
Secure the three daylight departures once dates are firm, especially the final ride into Göreme. The boarding and arrival terminals determine hotel access, while a late-night service changes the following day’s rest. YHT trains are an alternative for the first two legs, with separately priced tickets and station approaches.
With two Göreme nights, day nine is the only dawn followed by a complete sightseeing day. Request that morning if ballooning matters to you, and keep the museum-and-valley programme usable without it. A cancellation does not guarantee another opportunity before the day-ten airport transfer.
