Five archaeological landscapes give this western Turkey drive its purpose. Troy reveals successive settlements on one mound; Pergamon spreads across a hill and a healing sanctuary; Ephesus opens into the streets of a Roman city. Hierapolis adds a thermal landscape, and Aphrodisias ends the journey with marble sculpture. The order is geographical, rather than a march through ancient history.
Spend eleven nights across Çanakkale, Bergama, Selçuk, Pamukkale and the Aphrodisias area, distributed 2–2–3–2–2. A rental car connects the bases, with quieter arrival afternoons between the main site days. April–May and September–October are sensible choices for exposed walks; summer demands shorter mornings and more indoor breaks. This is an archaeology holiday with museums and village evenings, rather than a beach circuit. The southern rental return is the main booking constraint.
The mound rewards attention to walls, gateways and successive building phases. Its neighbouring museum supplies the objects and chronology that make those fragments understandable; give the pair a shared day rather than judging Troy by the wooden-horse image.
Bergama’s acropolis turns the hillside into architecture, with a steep theatre and terraces overlooking the plain. It feels very different from the Asclepion below, where a separate visit explains a sanctuary devoted to healing rather than royal power.
The Library of Celsus is the famous landmark, but the surrounding streets and theatre show how the city worked. The optional Terrace Houses add decorated domestic interiors; readers interested in sculpture can leave them out and spend longer in Selçuk’s museum.
Ayasuluk Hill and the Basilica of St John extend the story into later settlement. The archaeological museum brings the Artemis figures and excavated objects indoors. This extra day lets you follow a theme at your own pace, or exchange one visit for a relaxed village afternoon.
Pamukkale’s white formations explain why Hierapolis grew here. Above them, baths, the theatre and the necropolis need their own walking time. Keep the plateau circuit central to the day: the official tariff currently lists the Antique Pool as closed.
The museum’s sculpture and the reliefs associated with the Sebasteion make the final site more than a collection of standing columns. Follow them with the stadium and theatre, then return to the same rural room so the last substantial visit has an unhurried ending.

Troy, Troy Museum and Dardanelles context
Çanakkale’s central waterfront puts dinner and an arrival stroll beside the Dardanelles. Stay here for two nights, then drive out to Troy and its museum. A rural room closer to Troy shortens that outing but gives up the city’s easy evening choices.
Watch out: The route to Bergama stays on this side of the strait; no ferry crossing is needed.

Pergamon Acropolis, Asclepion and red basilica
Choose Bergama’s old town below the acropolis for character and a short approach to the hill. A central base also keeps the Asclepion within a local drive. Two nights separate the arrival afternoon from the full archaeological day.
Watch out: Old lanes can be tight for a car; use a property with a clear parking approach.

Ephesus, museum, Ayasuluk and Artemis precinct
Central Selçuk makes the museum and Ayasuluk area easy to combine without another checkout. Three nights protect Ephesus’s main morning plus a town day. Kuşadası adds a seaside setting, but brings a longer approach to both the ruins and these inland sights.
Watch out: The Ephesus gates are outside town; a central room does not remove that short transfer.

Hierapolis theatre, necropolis and travertines
Pamukkale village below the white plateau suits an early start and a quiet return after walking Hierapolis. Two nights keep the main visit clear of the inland drive. Denizli offers more city facilities, but shifts the stay away from the entrance area.
Watch out: Choose a gate route suited to your mobility; the barefoot terrace approach is not for everyone.

Aphrodisias museum, Sebasteion and stadium
Sleep in Geyre or nearby Karacasu for two nights. Anatolia Hotel offers a village base near Aphrodisias; Elmas sits farther along the local road and requires a short drive. Both keep the final museum day clear of the airport journey, at the cost of fewer evening choices than in Selçuk.
Watch out: Nearby lodging can mean a drive of around 15–20 minutes, rather than a walk to the entrance.
Transfer afternoons stay light, while each major archaeological landscape gets a rested morning. Optional visits can be skipped without changing the eleven-night plan; day twelve is departure.
Arrive in Çanakkale and settle near the waterfront. The ferries and cargo traffic on the Dardanelles make a useful first view of the region: this is a working waterway, with Troy farther south on the same side of the strait. Walk along the shore after the journey and choose dinner in town. Collecting the car at the airport can simplify the arrival, provided your room has a workable parking arrangement. There is no archaeological deadline today. A late flight simply shortens the promenade walk, leaving tomorrow’s museum and site day intact. Sleep in Çanakkale.
Overnight: Çanakkale
Drive south to Troy, roughly a short regional outing rather than a change of base. Start with the museum if you want the excavated objects and chronology before the mound; reverse the order if you prefer to understand the landscape first. At the site, look for differences between settlement layers, defensive walls and gateways. The surviving ground is more informative than the reconstructed horse. Allow a generous morning and part of the afternoon for both, with lunch and time out of the sun between them. The Ministry’s combined museum-and-site ticket is the useful admission here. Return to your second Çanakkale night; Gallipoli deserves another day.
Overnight: Çanakkale
Leave Çanakkale by road towards Bergama, staying on the Asian side of the Dardanelles. The drive is about 220 km, so allow roughly three and a half to four and a half hours with a rest. Reach the old town, leave the car and take a short orientation walk below the acropolis. The Red Basilica is a landmark you may see from outside, but the current Ministry list marks its interior closed. An optional visit to Bergama Museum can introduce local finds if the arrival leaves enough energy. Otherwise enjoy the town and save the large archaeological sites for tomorrow. This is the first of two Bergama nights.
Overnight: Bergama
Devote the morning to Pergamon’s acropolis, where the steep theatre, terraces and views make topography essential to interpretation. The Temple of Trajan’s columns sit above a much older royal landscape; the hill’s setting is part of what distinguishes Pergamon from Troy. Use the road approach or the cable car when operating, rather than assuming a steep walk is a suitable ascent for everyone. Descend for lunch. The Asclepion is a separate healing sanctuary and an optional afternoon outing, with its own ticket; leave it out if heat or fatigue makes a second circuit unattractive. Return to the same room. There is no drive to Selçuk tonight.
Overnight: Bergama
Travel south to Selçuk, approximately 180 km. Allow around two and a half to three hours including town approaches and a pause; İzmir-area traffic can lengthen the move. The afternoon belongs to settling into a central base, where the museum and Ayasuluk Hill are nearby choices. Take a gentle walk rather than beginning the full Ephesus circuit after the road. For tomorrow, a taxi to one gate and pickup at the other avoids walking back through the site to a parked car; driving to a single entrance is simpler if you prefer a return circuit. The town gives you dinner options and three nights without moving rooms.
Overnight: Selçuk
Enter Ephesus in the cooler part of the morning. Follow the principal streets between the civic buildings, Library of Celsus and theatre, allowing several hours for the slopes and stops to read the remains. The contrast between public buildings and domestic interiors is worthwhile: the Terrace Houses are an optional, separately charged extension for readers interested in decorated homes. They are not necessary to understand the main route through the city. Keep water and sun protection handy, since the open stone offers little shelter. Return to Selçuk for lunch or a late lunch and rest. The museum belongs to tomorrow, so there is no pressure to complete two substantial visits today.
Overnight: Selçuk
Use Selçuk’s additional day to connect objects and later settlement. Begin in the archaeological museum, where the Artemis figures and other excavated material add detail that the streets of Ephesus cannot supply. Ayasuluk Hill and the Basilica of St John can continue the story beyond the ancient port city. The Artemis precinct is visually modest compared with the famous buildings, but useful if the sanctuary’s history interests you. Choose two of these strands instead of treating every stop as compulsory. Şirince is an optional alternative for part of the afternoon. Keep the third Selçuk night: this slower day is the route’s main breathing space.
Overnight: Selçuk
Drive inland to Pamukkale, about 190 km between the bases. Two and a half to three hours is a useful planning allowance with a break; it is a road day, rather than an Ephesus-and-Pamukkale double visit. Stay in the village below the plateau and use the afternoon for a meal, rest and orientation. The white terraces and the city above share one protected landscape, so tomorrow’s entrance choice matters. A village terrace approach involves barefoot sections, while the other gates offer different approaches to Hierapolis. Choose the route that fits your walking ability. Water is managed for conservation: a photograph of filled pools cannot establish what will be flowing on your date.
Overnight: Pamukkale
Give Hierapolis and the travertines a shared day. Follow the official route across the natural formations, removing shoes where instructed, then spend time with the ancient city above. The baths, theatre and necropolis explain why visitors should allow more than a quick photo stop at the white terraces. Break for food and shade instead of trying to walk every part of the plateau continuously. The theatre climb can be omitted if it does not suit your mobility; the day still has a useful archaeological and geological focus. The current official list says the Antique Pool is closed, so swimming there is not part of this plan. Return for the second Pamukkale night.
Overnight: Pamukkale
Leave Pamukkale for the Aphrodisias area after a relaxed breakfast. The roughly 105 km drive takes around one and a half to two hours with a pause, using the inland roads rather than adding another coastal chapter. Settle into Geyre or nearby Karacasu lodging and spend the rest of the day at holiday pace. This rural base suits a quiet evening before the final museum-and-site visit. Anatolia Hotel is a village option; Elmas, used in the budget example, requires a short drive to the entrance. Meals may be at the property or a local restaurant. There is no need to add Laodicea or revisit Hierapolis on the way: both would turn a light move into another demanding sightseeing day.
Overnight: Aphrodisias
Give Aphrodisias an unbroken day. The museum’s sculpture makes a strong introduction to the city’s relationship with nearby marble quarries and its skilled carvers. Continue outside to the Sebasteion, tetrapylon, theatre and stadium, choosing a circuit with breaks rather than racing between monuments. The reliefs and inscriptions reward attention to people and patronage as well as architectural scale. Current Ministry hours are 08:30–17:30, with the ticket office closing at 17:00; a morning arrival leaves enough time for the museum and selected outdoor areas. Finish with lunch or an afternoon pause and return to the same rural bed. The second night protects this visit from the airport drive.
Overnight: Aphrodisias
Depart after the second Aphrodisias-area night. Denizli Çardak is the intended rental return for the cost example; the return point and your flight need to work together before accommodation becomes non-refundable. Geyre to Çardak is a separate final drive, so leave room for a road break, refuelling and the airport’s normal check-in requirements. If your actual rental ends in İzmir instead, this is a substantially longer departure day and the price example no longer describes that contract. Add a night if the flight is too early for a calm road exit. There is no twelfth hotel night in the twelve-day plan and no major site scheduled before departure.
Base: Aphrodisias
The four base changes use the same rental car. Distances come from mapped road routes; the time ranges add ordinary pauses and town approaches to traffic-free estimates.

Çanakkale Bergama
Stay on the Asian side of the strait and drive south towards Bergama. A rest around the middle of the journey makes this a light transfer day; no Dardanelles ferry is required.
Booking note: Keep the first rental booking continuous through the southern return; a free one-way offer cannot be assumed.
Bergama Selçuk
Continue south via the İzmir road corridor to Selçuk. The main variability is traffic around the urban approaches; settle in before choosing a short afternoon town walk.

Selçuk Pamukkale
Turn inland towards the Denizli plain and Pamukkale. Take a lunch or rest stop on the road, with the plateau visit reserved for the next rested morning.
Booking note: Pamukkale village and Denizli city are different overnight choices; select the village base if the early site approach is your priority.
Pamukkale Aphrodisias
Use the inland road to the Geyre/Aphrodisias area. Nearby Karacasu lodging can extend the final local approach, but still keeps tomorrow’s museum visit separate from departure.

Selçuk
The order follows geography south from the Dardanelles, then inland; it is not chronological. Troy and Pergamon precede Ephesus on the road, while Hierapolis and Aphrodisias form the final inland pair. Reversing the route works with a matching rental and flight plan.
Only by removing a complete archaeological base or adding nights. Istanbul is not an airport evening; it needs its own city itinerary. This route begins in Çanakkale so the specialist sequence remains intact.
Those bases can work, but Selçuk is more efficient for an opening-time archaeological visit, the museum and Ayasuluk. The three-night stay is chosen for historical depth and simple gate logistics.
Yes: the travertines and ancient city are one protected property, though different entrances change the walking route. Choose a shorter archaeological circuit if needed. A pool swim is not included: the current Ministry tariff lists the Antique Pool as closed.
It is particularly rewarding for sculpture and marble craftsmanship. With less time, remove both rural nights and use Pamukkale as the last base; do not add Aphrodisias and a distant airport to one already full day. That shorter journey has a different rental and accommodation budget.
A car reduces the transfers, but does not make steep Pergamon, sloping Ephesus or Pamukkale’s barefoot sections accessible. Choose shorter site circuits and suitable gate approaches, and ask the operator about your specific needs. Museums offer another strand when a long outdoor walk would be tiring.
