Getting to Berat and around

Intercity buses arrive at Berat's terminal on the northern edge of town, roughly 3 km from the historic centre. Take a city bus or taxi into Mangalem or Gorica, then explore on foot.

From Tirana

Buses from Tirana's South and North Terminal take around 2 hours 15 minutes, with frequent daytime departures and online fares around €7. Berat's intercity terminal is outside the old centre: allow extra time for a city bus or taxi to your accommodation.

From Tirana airport

Take the airport's hourly shuttle to the South and North Bus Terminal (07:00–18:00, 300 lek) and change onto a Berat bus there.

On to Gjirokastër

GjirafaTravel currently lists a direct 14:00 bus with a scheduled three-hour journey. Confirm the day's service at the terminal before checkout; if it does not suit, arrange a transfer or confirm a connection before setting off.

On foot

Mangalem and Gorica are linked by two pedestrian bridges, and the castle is a 1 km walk uphill from the suspension bridge along Rruga Mihal Komena.

The promenade and main square

Bulevardi Republika, the pedestrian street on the Mangalem side, runs along the river past a small park to the main square and the Cathedral of St Demetrios, where the modern town begins. It is where Berat takes its evening walk.

Driving

Historic lanes are narrow and some are car-free. Park in the modern town or at your guesthouse, and use the castle's small free car park early.

Day trips

The Osum Canyon near Çorovodë is best in spring, when snowmelt allows rafting through the gorge; in late summer there are walks and swimming pools instead.
