Vlorë: where the Adriatic ends and the Riviera road begins

Loading Vlorë hotel search

Vlorë before you book

Vlorë is a working port city rather than a resort, but it sits at the hinge of Albania's two coasts: sandy Adriatic to the north, the clear Ionian and the Llogara road to the south.

Who it suits Road-trippers and boat-trippers

Vlorë makes sense as the last city stop before the Riviera or as a base for Karaburun boat days. For postcard beaches alone, Himarë and the coves further south are better.

Nights to book Two or three

One day for the promenade, the Independence Museum and the Muradie Mosque, one for a Karaburun–Sazan boat trip, and a spare for Zvërnec's lagoon monastery or a beach day at Radhimë.

City beaches Convenient, not the best

The Lungomare gives you an urban beach beside cafés and accommodation. Radhimë and Orikum offer different beach settings farther down the bay, while remote Karaburun coves need a boat. Choose by shore access, facilities and current conditions rather than distance south alone.

Flights Still via Tirana

Vlora International Airport, north of the city, has been built but was not certified for commercial flights in summer 2026. Plan on Tirana airport and a 2.5-hour transfer.

Heading south Llogara tunnel or the pass

The 6 km Llogara Tunnel, opened in 2024, bypasses the hairpins over the pass on the way to Dhërmi and Himarë. Tolls apply; the old road over the top keeps the views.

By sea from Italy Brindisi ferry: check the date and vessel

StarLines serves the Brindisi–Vlorë route with conventional ferries. Frequency and journey length vary by sailing, so select the exact travel date before reserving an onward connection. Check whether the quoted fare includes a seat or cabin and the vehicle, if travelling with one.

StartBooker answer

Where should you stay in Vlorë?

Choose the Lungomare for promenade cafés and an urban beach stay, checking the hotel's actual distance from the harbour. Uji i Ftohtë offers a rockier shore at the southern end of the waterfront. Radhimë or Orikum suit a resort-based trip with a car or planned taxis, while accommodation around the old centre makes historic sights easier to reach. Compare beach access, room orientation and evening transport before booking; a southern address alone does not guarantee quieter nights or better bathing water.

Plan your Vlorë days

Say whether you are driving the coast, taking the bus or arriving by ferry, and how many nights you have. The planner balances the city, the boats and the beaches to the south.

Four places to sleep around the Bay of Vlorë

Compare the urban Lungomare with the rockier shore around Uji i Ftohtë and the beach bases at Radhimë and Orikum. Farther-out hotels can give you more of a resort stay, but check beach access and transport to town rather than assuming their address guarantees clearer water.

The sandy city beach and seafront apartment blocks along Vlorë's Lungomare in warm late-afternoon sun

Lungomare

First visits, walking, evenings out

The modern seafront promenade south of the port, lined with beaches, hotels, cafés and restaurants.

You don't have a car and want the beach, dinner and the boat-trip desks within walking distance.

Lively from late afternoon into the night in summer.

Walkable Beach Cafés

Urban beaches and summer noise.

Front-row rooms face the promenade crowds until late; ask for a higher floor or the back.

The stone Muradie Mosque and its minaret in central Vlorë on a sunny day

Old centre and Independence Square

History, short stays, local life

The old streets around Flag Square, the Independence Monument and the 16th-century Muradie Mosque form the historic centre. The National Museum of Independence is a separate visit near the port at Skelë, rather than a museum beside the square.

Albania's independence story and everyday city life interest you more than sunbeds, and one or two nights is enough.

Traffic by day, quiet late at night.

History Culture Budget

No beach on the doorstep.

Streets near the main boulevard carry heavy traffic; look for rooms on quieter side streets.

Rocky shoreline and clear water at Uji i Ftohtë on the southern edge of Vlorë on a sunny day

Uji i Ftohtë

Couples, road-trippers, quieter nights

The southern continuation of the promenade, where the coast turns rocky, the land rises and small beaches sit between stretches of stone.

You want the sea close by and calmer evenings, but still plan to spend time on the Lungomare and in the centre.

Noticeably calmer than the Lungomare.

Quiet Sea views Couples

Rocky swimming and fewer restaurants on foot.

Many beach sections are stony with ladders into deeper water; not ideal for toddlers.

Turquoise water and a curving beach backed by hotels at Radhimë, south of Vlorë, under a bright sky

Radhimë and Orikum

Beach weeks, families with a car, boat days

The coast south of the city towards the Karaburun peninsula: newer resorts and beach clubs at Radhimë, a marina, quieter beaches and an ancient site at Orikum.

A resort hotel and time beside the bay matter more than walking to city sights, and you have transport for outings.

Resort-quiet, with beach-club music in July and August.

Beach Family Resort

You need a car or taxis for the city.

Development is rapid; check exactly how far a 'sea view' property is from a swimmable beach.

Pick the Vlorë base for your trip

Vlorë works best for three kinds of visit: a stop on a Riviera road trip, a few days of boats and beaches, or an arrival by ferry. The right area follows from that.

Travelling by bus

The Lungomare.

Choose this ifBuses arrive near the centre, and the promenade gives you beaches, restaurants and the harbour for boat trips without a taxi.

Trade-offBusier nights.

Avoid this ifAvoid Radhimë or Orikum without a car; you will rely on taxis every day.

AlternativeBuses on to Himarë are few, so check the day's departures when you arrive.

A night on a coastal road trip

Uji i Ftohtë.

Choose this ifUji i Ftohtë sits on the south side of the city, giving you a practical start towards the Llogara tunnel next morning.

Trade-offFewer places to eat on foot.

Avoid this ifAvoid central hotels without parking if you are driving.

AlternativeTake the old road over the pass for the view if the weather is clear.

Karaburun and Sazan by boat

The Lungomare or Orikum.

Choose this ifBoats into the marine park leave Vlorë's harbour, and some start from Orikum; shorter speedboat trips to Haxhi Ali Cave start at about €32 per person.

Trade-offAn early start.

Avoid this ifAvoid booking a boat day with rough weather forecast; trips are cancelled at short notice.

AlternativeCompare the itinerary's actual coves and swimming stops: a short cave trip and a full-day Grama Bay excursion give very different amounts of time on the water.

A family beach holiday

Radhimë or Orikum.

Choose this ifCalmer bay water and resorts with facilities make long beach days easier than the city beaches.

Trade-offBudget for a car or taxis.

Avoid this ifAvoid Uji i Ftohtë's rocky platforms with small children.

AlternativeOrikum's lagoon and ancient site make an easy half-day outing.

History and culture

The old centre.

Choose this ifYou want the Independence Monument, Muradie Mosque and restored streets on foot. The National Museum of Independence is a separate visit near the harbour.

Trade-offBeach by taxi or bus.

Avoid this ifAvoid if the trip is mainly about swimming.

AlternativeAdd Zvërnec's island monastery on the Narta lagoon, reached by a wooden footbridge.

Arriving on the Brindisi ferry

The Lungomare or the old centre.

Choose this ifThe Lungomare and the old centre offer city accommodation for a ferry arrival; check the distance from the port to your actual hotel entrance.

Trade-offCity noise.

Avoid this ifAvoid choosing flight or hotel dates from a general ferry-season description; confirm a bookable Brindisi sailing in the direction you need.

AlternativeBook the first night before you sail; late-evening check-in is common but not universal.

Compare Vlorë hotel prices

Check parking if you are driving, and whether the beach below the hotel is sand, pebble or rock.

Getting to Vlorë and around the bay

Tirana airport has established onward road transfers to Vlorë. If you are considering another arrival airport or the Brindisi ferry, confirm the actual service for your travel date before booking the rest of the trip.

Arriving

From Tirana by bus

From Tirana by bus

Tirana–Vlorë is one of the country's busiest bus corridors, with 27 departures a day from the capital's South and North Terminal, the first at 05:00 and the last at 17:00. The ride is roughly two and a half hours, longer in summer traffic.

Straight from Tirana airport

An airport shuttle operated by Hermes Airport runs between Tirana airport and Vlorë for 1,200 lek; check its timetable on the airport's bus page.

Vlora's own airport

Vlora International Airport carried out its certification flight in May 2025, but opening was postponed and charter flights planned for summer 2026 were cancelled. Do not book flights there until scheduled services are confirmed.

Around the bay and beyond

Taxis and the promenade

Taxis and the promenade

The Lungomare and the old centre are walkable; taxis cover Uji i Ftohtë, Radhimë and Orikum.

South to Himarë

GjirafaTravel's Vlorë–Himarë listings show limited departures, so confirm the boarding point and time before checking out. Road journeys vary with the service and traffic; ask whether your bus uses the tunnel or the older pass road rather than expecting the scenic route.

Boats into the marine park

Trips from the harbour visit Sazan island, Haxhi Ali Cave and coves around the Karaburun peninsula. Ask which stops are included and how much time is ashore: short cave outings and longer beach excursions follow different routes.

Sights

Independence Museum and Muradie Mosque

Independence Museum and Muradie Mosque

The National Museum of Independence is near the port in Skelë, in a building used by the first Albanian government. Flag Square and the Muradie Mosque belong to the historic centre farther north. Plan them as separate stops and check museum opening hours before walking across town.

Vlorë with limited mobility

Flat promenade, rocky shores

Flat promenade, rocky shores

The Lungomare is flat and easy to walk, while Uji i Ftohtë's beaches often involve steps and ladders. Boat trips require climbing aboard from a quay, so ask the operator about assistance before booking.

Vlorë seasons, prices and missteps

Vlorë is a city, so it never shuts completely, but its beaches and boat trips follow the summer.

When to go

June and September
  • June and September

Warm sea, boat trips running and room to breathe on the promenade; September is the pick for the coast.

  • July and August

The busiest weeks, with the Lungomare packed every evening and boat trips selling out; book early and choose weekdays for the boats.

  • March to May, October

Pleasant for the city and the lagoon, but the sea is cool in spring and some beach clubs close by October.

What Vlorë costs

Daily spend
  • Daily spend

Build the budget from the room, meals and excursions you actually choose. A shared apartment or guesthouse can reduce the nightly cost, but an advertised backpacker total may exclude accommodation, boat trips or transfers to beaches outside town. Compare dates before assuming Vlorë will be cheaper than every southern resort.

  • Transport

The bus from Tirana costs about €8 on GjirafaTravel, and the airport shuttle 1,200 lek.

  • Boat trips

Speedboat trips to Haxhi Ali Cave start at about €32 per person; full-day tours to Grama Bay cost roughly €70 and up.

Common Vlorë mistakes

Booking flights into Vlora airport
  • Booking flights into Vlora airport

It was not operating commercial flights in summer 2026; fly to Tirana.

  • Judging the coast by the city beaches

A city beach beside the promenade, a resort shore at Radhimë and a remote boat-access cove serve different days out. Pick the setting and access you want; check the day's sea conditions instead of assuming every beach south of town has better water.

  • Hiring an unlicensed jet ski or boat

UK advice warns that some rented jet skis and boats lack safety equipment; book through licensed operators.

Is Vlorë worth visiting?

Yes, as a gateway and boat base. It is a real city with history and a long promenade, and the Karaburun–Sazan marine park offers the clearest water in the area.

Is the Vlora airport open?

Not for commercial flights in summer 2026. Opening was postponed over certification, so use Tirana airport.

How long is the bus from Tirana to Vlorë?

About 2 hours 25 minutes, with 27 daily departures from Tirana's South and North Terminal.

Where are the best beaches near Vlorë?

South of the city at Radhimë and Orikum, and in the boat-only coves of the Karaburun peninsula.

Should I drive through the Llogara tunnel or over the pass?

The tunnel is faster and avoids the hairpins; the pass is slower but gives the famous view over the Riviera. A toll applies in the tunnel.

Can I take a ferry from Vlorë to Italy?

Brindisi is the relevant Italian route. Check StarLines or a current booking calendar for your exact date, direction, vessel and check-in requirements; do not treat the end of September as a universal closing date for the connection.
