North to south along Albania's Ionian coast

Start beside Vlorë's broad bay and finish opposite Corfu, with Himarë between them. The journey crosses from a working port with a long urban promenade to smaller Ionian bays, then to Sarandë's denser waterfront. Six nights divided equally make room for a full outing from each base without changing hotels every morning.

Vlorë is the departure point for boat excursions into the Karaburun–Sazan marine park. In Himarë, choose between town beaches, a trip to a nearby cove and an evening in the old hillside settlement. Sarandë supplies the most practical final transport connections, while Ksamil and Butrint offer quite different reasons to head south: island views and beach facilities at the former, archaeology beside a lagoon at the latter.

Arrange the two coastal transfers before committing to activities on those days. The booking platform lists few departures; that is useful planning evidence rather than a complete census of every seasonal minibus. Drivers gain flexibility for Dhërmi, Jalë and Borsh, but should confirm parking with each hotel and choose whether to use the Llogara tunnel or scenic pass.

June and September are good starting points for this plan if you want a balance of beach services and space. Check boat availability and weather individually. Peak summer calls for earlier room reservations and realistic expectations about noise, traffic and paid beach furniture.

Karaburun by boat

Speedboats leave Vlorë's harbour for Haxhi Ali Cave and the road-less coves of Albania's only marine national park, from about €32 per person.

Himarë's town beaches

Spile and Potam put a swim within reach of town accommodation. Walk the shore before choosing a spot, checking the current boundary between rented furniture and space for your own towel.

Butrint in the morning

Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Venetian remains beside a lagoon, 20 km from Sarandë; the site opens at 08:30 from April to October.

Old Himarë above the coast

The hillside settlement adds stone lanes and a view across the bay to a beach day. Arrange the uphill journey separately from your waterfront walk.

Porto Palermo on the drive south

A stop at the headland fortress breaks the journey towards Sarandë. Drivers can include it without relying on a through-bus sightseeing stop; check access before detouring.

Ksamil's island views

Beach bays face the small offshore islands. A boat outing is an alternative to swimming across: agree where you will land, the return pickup and the total fare before leaving.

Best for

  • Beach lovers who want three different kinds of coast in one week
  • Travellers happy to plan around a few buses a day, or to drive mountain roads

Think twice if

Anyone wanting one hotel for a week, or wide sandy beaches for toddlers; the Riviera is mostly pebble coves, and Durrës or Golem suit that better.

StartBooker answer

How do I spend a week on the Albanian Riviera?

Give each of three bases two nights: Vlorë for the seafront and a marine-park boat excursion, Himarë for beach time and its hillside village, then Sarandë for Butrint and Ksamil. Public buses connect the towns, although coastal departures need checking for your date. A rental car makes intermediate stops easier; hotel parking matters at the southern end. Finish with a ferry connection through Corfu or return north for Tirana airport, allowing a separate transfer and flight check-in buffer.

The Lungomare suits evening walks and beach cafés. Check your hotel's distance from the actual boat departure point and intercity bus pickup; the promenade extends well beyond the harbour.

Watch out: Vlora's new airport had no commercial flights in summer 2026; arrive via Tirana.

Stay near Spile, the town beach, or at Potam at the southern end of the bay if you are on the bus; drivers can choose quiet Livadh.

Watch out: Reserve the onward coastal transfer before adding a morning outing; confirm the departure point and date-specific service.

For a stay without a car, compare the walk to the waterfront, local bus stop and ferry terminal. Ask about the exact entrance, steps and lift: a sea-view address can still involve a steep climb.

Watch out: Central parking is scarce in summer; drivers should book a hotel with parking.

The week, day by day

Two travel days along the coast, four days of boats and beaches, and a flexible last morning.

1 Day 1 Tirana airport to Vlorë's promenade

The airport's Hermes service reaches Vlorë for a listed 1,200 lek. Compare its departure with your landing time and baggage collection. Going through Tirana's South and North Terminal is another option, with a separate airport shuttle and intercity bus; include waiting and the final hotel transfer. After checking in, use whatever evening remains for the Lungomare. Choose a nearby meal and an easy promenade walk rather than booking an excursion against an uncertain arrival. If you swim, use an appropriate beach area and check local conditions.

  • Airport shuttle or bus to Vlorë
  • The Lungomare at sunset
  • A first swim in the bay

Base: Vlorë

2 Day 2 Into the Karaburun–Sazan marine park

Make the boat excursion today's main commitment. Ask which stops are included, how much time is on shore, whether shade and drinking water are provided, and what happens if wind prevents departure. A trip including Sazan, Haxhi Ali Cave and a swimming cove differs from a longer Grama Bay outing; compare the actual programme and total price. For a weather alternative, visit the National Museum of Independence near the Skelë harbour area, housed in the seat of Albania's first government. It is separate from the historic centre around Flag Square and Muradie Mosque. Check museum opening hours before setting out; a late return from the boat may leave time only for a waterfront meal.

  • Haxhi Ali sea cave
  • Karaburun swim stops
  • A weather alternative near the harbour

Base: Vlorë

3 Day 3 Along the coast to Himarë

Confirm the Vlorë–Himarë departure and boarding point the previous day. GjirafaTravel currently lists services at 10:00 and 12:30, taking around two and a half hours; these are platform listings, not a guarantee of every local departure. Ask whether your service follows the old Llogara pass or uses the tunnel. If driving, choose the scenic pass only when the weather, road conditions and your comfort allow it. A beach stop at Jalë needs time off the main transfer. On arrival in Himarë, settle into your accommodation before choosing Spile or Potam for a swim, and check the day's sunbed price or available towel space on site.

  • The Llogara road
  • A stop at Jalë by car
  • Afternoon on Spile beach

Base: Himarë

4 Day 4 Coves by boat and the castle village

Choose a boat outing from Himarë to sea caves or coves such as Kakome. Ask which landings are included, how the weather affects the route and when the boat returns; use an operator with life jackets on board. With a car, Gjipe is another option, with a walk down to the canyon beach. In the late afternoon, go up to Old Himarë, the castle village above town, for its churches, walls and the view over Livadh. Arrange transport if the uphill walk does not suit you.

  • A boat to hidden coves
  • Gjipe or Jalë
  • Sunset in Old Himarë

Base: Himarë

5 Day 5 South to Sarandë, via Porto Palermo

Buses leave Himarë for Sarandë around midday and in the afternoon, taking about an hour and three-quarters for the 52 km. By car, stop at Porto Palermo's castle, built for Ali Pasha in 1804, and the long beach at Borsh. In Sarandë, walk the promenade in the evening or take a taxi up to Lëkurësi Castle, built in 1537, for the view over the bay to the Ksamil islets.

  • Porto Palermo castle
  • Borsh's long beach

Base: Sarandë

6 Day 6 Butrint early, Ksamil after

Use the local bus serving Ksamil and continuing to Butrint, confirming the direction and departure point in Sarandë. Butrint opens at 08:30 in its April–October schedule, with an individual online ticket listed at 1,000 lek. Allow time for the site rather than treating it as a brief stop on the way to a beach. Continue to Ksamil only if you still want an afternoon swim. Choose the bay after seeing its crowding, access and furniture prices. For an island boat trip, agree the return arrangements before paying. Check the last northbound bus with the driver; the platform's Sarandë-to-Ksamil departure list does not establish the return timetable. If using a taxi, obtain the fare for your actual hotel.

  • Butrint at opening time
  • Ksamil's islets
  • Sunset back in Sarandë

Base: Sarandë

7 Day 7 Leave via Corfu or Tirana

Choose today's connection before booking the flight. For Corfu, ferry type changes the crossing: hydrofoils generally take 30–45 minutes, conventional vessels 55–70. Follow the operator's check-in instructions; Finikas asks passengers to start boarding procedures at least an hour beforehand. Albania and Greece use different local times, and arrival at Corfu port still leaves the airport transfer and airline check-in. For Tirana, budget the long road journey separately from the terminal-to-airport transfer. Traffic, waiting and hotel-to-bus travel all matter. An early flight calls for spending the previous night near the departure airport, which changes the final-night allocation. Keep the Blue Eye for a separate sightseeing day or substitute it for another outing; do not build it into this departure.

  • Fast boat to Corfu
  • Or the bus to Tirana
  • Time for the airport connection

Base: Sarandë

Two coastal legs

Both legs follow the Riviera road. Buses are scarce, so they set the rhythm of the week.

2 transfers

  1. Vlorë Himarë

Bus Travel time: About 2.5 hours by bus; less by car via the tunnel

Check the Vlorë boarding address on your booking: platform services can depart from a roadside pickup rather than a central bus station. Establish whether luggage is included and how to contact the operator if the pickup location is unclear. The tunnel and old Llogara pass offer different journeys. A driver can choose a mountain viewpoint or a detour to Dhërmi, but neither should be assumed to be part of an ordinary bus ticket. If no suitable service runs, compare a quoted private transfer with adjusting the hotel dates.

Booking note: Buy tickets on board in cash; arrive early in July and August, when seats fill.

  2. Himarë Sarandë

Bus Travel time: About 1 hour 45 minutes by bus

For the Himarë–Sarandë leg, select a service that leaves enough time to find the hotel after arrival. The platform shows a journey of about an hour and three-quarters, though road traffic can add time. Through buses do not provide sightseeing stops at Porto Palermo or Borsh. Before arriving, save the hotel pin and ask whether its entrance is reachable with wheeled luggage. If a taxi is needed for the final climb, agree the fare before loading your bags.

Booking note: Confirm ticket payment and the luggage allowance with the named operator.

Coastal bus times change with the season and are not always online; confirm at your hotel or the bus stop the day before. Mountain roads are slow and busy in August.

What a Riviera week costs

Buses are cheap; boats, sunbeds and August room rates are where the money goes.

The Riviera road from Vlorë to Sarandë

Your three bases along the coast; the Llogara mountains separate Vlorë from the Ionian beaches.

Vlorë → Himarë → Sarandë

Before you book the Riviera week

Can I do the Albanian Riviera without a car?

Yes, on this route. Each base has a bus link, and Sarandë has frequent buses to Ksamil. You will need to plan around two or three coastal buses a day and use boats or taxis for the remote coves.

Should I stay in Ksamil instead of Sarandë?

Stay in Ksamil if the beach is the point and you want to swim before the day crowds; stay in Sarandë for restaurants, cheaper rooms and the Corfu ferry.

Is it better to go north to south?

Usually. Vlorë is easy to reach from Tirana, and Sarandë is the natural exit, with ferries to Corfu and buses back to the capital.

When is the best time for this route?

June and September: warm sea, open beach bars and fewer crowds. July and August are busiest and priciest.

Where can I add Dhërmi?

On day three by car: Dhërmi lies between the Llogara road and Himarë, with beaches below the village and some of the Riviera's pricier beach clubs.

Can I end the trip in Corfu?

Yes, but book the onward flight against an actual ferry sailing rather than a generic crossing estimate. For a morning flight, spend the last night on Corfu; this reduces your Sarandë stay unless you extend the trip. Confirm entry requirements and what your ferry ticket permits if plans change.
