Capital, coast and castle on one short break

Tirana provides two nights in one place, with Durrës as a day excursion rather than a third check-in. The capital is a major bus hub, although its intercity terminal sits outside the centre. Durrës adds Roman remains and a waterfront walk; a separate beach overnight would make sense on a slower trip, but costs time in this four-day plan.

Berat earns the single hotel move. An evening beside the Osum lets you see Mangalem and Gorica after the day-trip crowds have thinned, then return to the citadel before leaving. Staying overnight also makes it easier to choose a historic house for its setting without trying to combine every museum with the incoming bus.

You can use this outline outside summer, adapting opening hours and treating Durrës as a cultural stop when beach services are limited. In hot weather, bring water for Berat's uphill walk and move exposed sightseeing earlier in the day. A swim is optional rather than the reason to choose this route.

The departure day needs planning first. Returning from Berat includes the trip to its outlying bus terminal, the intercity journey, waiting for an airport connection and airline check-in. Choose the flight against those actual services. If that leaves too little margin, move the last night to Tirana and shorten the castle morning instead of relying on the final possible bus.

A Roman arena by the sea

Durrës's 2nd-century amphitheatre, the largest in the Balkans, sits a few minutes' walk from the promenade and the Venetian Tower.

Tirana's bunker museums

Bunk'Art 2, a Cold War bunker by Skanderbeg Square, tells the story of the Sigurimi secret police; Blloku, the former party elite's compound, is now the city's café quarter.

Morning inside Berat Castle

Visit the citadel early for its Byzantine churches and lived-in lanes. The Onufri icon museum has a separate ticket and opening hours; check those before making the uphill walk.

Breakfast from the New Bazaar

Tirana's restored covered market sells fruit, cheese, honey and olives in the morning, and the grills around it serve the best-value dinners in the centre.

The view across the Osum

From Gorica's riverbank the tiers of windows in Mangalem face you across the water — the view behind Berat's nickname, best in the last hour of daylight.

Up Mount Dajti, if the day allows

The cable car offers a mountain alternative when you can spare the city-to-station transfer and return. It normally closes on Tuesdays, except public holidays; protect the booked Berat connection rather than adding it to an already full morning.

Best for

  • First-time visitors with a long weekend who want history, food and a first look at the sea
  • Travellers without a car who would rather change hotel once than three times

Think twice if

Anyone whose priority is a clear-water beach holiday; Durrës is sandy and shallow, and the turquoise coves are three hours further south.

StartBooker answer

How should I spend four days in Tirana, Durrës and Berat?

Use Tirana for two nights, visiting Durrës without moving hotels, then spend one night in Berat. This gives you time for the capital's food and museums, the Adriatic waterfront and an evening among Berat's historic houses. Intercity buses make the route practical without a car, but both Tirana and Berat require terminal transfers. A castle visit before returning on day four works only with a comfortably timed flight; for an early departure, put the final night in Tirana and adjust the sightseeing.

Two bases, one day trip

Tirana handles the arrival, the museums and the Durrës excursion; Berat gets the one night that makes it memorable.

Stay around the New Bazaar or Skanderbeg Square: the airport bus stops behind the Opera, the market and restaurants are on the doorstep, and a short taxi reaches the South and North Bus Terminal for Durrës and Berat.

Watch out: Buses to other cities leave from the terminal at Kthesa e Kamzës, not the centre; allow 15–20 minutes by taxi.

Sleep in Mangalem below the castle or in quieter Gorica across the river, choosing a restored Ottoman house if its stairs suit you. After the transfer from the intercity terminal, both quarters put the promenade within walking distance.

Watch out: The historic lanes are steep and cobbled; avoid a castle guesthouse if you have heavy luggage and an early bus.

Four days, day by day

One arrival day, one coast day, one travel-and-sightseeing day and a castle morning before the flight.

1 Day 1 Land at Rinas and walk into the evening

The LU-NA airport bus connects Rinas with the stop behind Tirana's Palace of Opera and Ballet. The central service is listed hourly, around the clock, at 400 lek or €4. The operator accepts cash or card on board and sells online tickets; keep the hotel address ready for the final walk or taxi. If arrival leaves an evening free, start with Skanderbeg Square and dinner around Pazari i Ri. Choose Blloku for a later drink if you still want to walk across the Lana. A late landing only needs the transfer and check-in; the central sights can wait until the next morning.

2 Day 2 A day on the Adriatic in Durrës

Reach Tirana's South and North Terminal for the Durrës bus, checking where your return service will board before starting the day. From the old centre, combine the Roman amphitheatre with the Venetian Tower and the seafront rather than trying to cover the whole beach strip. The Archaeological Museum reopened on 28 April 2026 after renovation. Check its current hours and admission price directly; older travel articles still quote the previous ticket arrangements. Give it a proper visit if archaeology is your priority, or choose a shorter promenade walk and beach stop instead. For a swim, use a designated beach such as Currila or Plazh, away from the working port, and check the EEA bathing-water information for that location. Confirm the last Durrës-to-Tirana departure locally: a late service in the opposite direction does not prove you can linger over dinner and still get home by bus.

3 Day 3 Bunker museum in the morning, Berat by evening

Choose Bunk'Art 2 for a central morning visit, checking its current opening hours and allowing time for the rooms about Albania's political police. The National History Museum has been undergoing reconstruction; do not build the morning around a projected reopening date. After lunch, travel to the intercity terminal for a confirmed Berat departure. The listed journey is roughly two hours and fifteen minutes, followed by a separate local bus or taxi from Berat's terminal into the historic centre. Check in before taking the riverside walk and crossing to Gorica for the view of Mangalem. Dajti is an alternative morning programme, not an extra museum stop. Include travel to the lower station, any queue and the return journey before choosing the onward bus. The operator normally closes Tuesdays except public holidays and does not permit wheelchairs on the cable car.

4 Day 4 A castle morning if your departure allows

If your flight leaves enough time, walk or arrange a ride up to Berat Castle early. The citadel is a lived-in neighbourhood as well as a heritage site; museum opening hours are a separate matter. Check the Onufri museum's visit schedule before expecting to include it, and allow time to return for your bags. Arrange the transfer to Berat's bus terminal and choose the Tirana service against the full airport connection. The airport lists a South and North Terminal shuttle hourly from 07:00 to 18:00 at 300 lek, with a separate journey to Rinas. Add waiting, road delays and the airline's check-in requirement. A late flight may suit this plan, but the timetable alone does not make any evening departure automatically comfortable.

  • Terminal shuttle to Rinas

One bus leg, plus a day trip

Only one real transfer, Tirana to Berat, and it is among the best-served routes in Albania.

1 transfer

  1. Tirana Berat

Bus Travel time: About 2 hours 15 minutes by bus

Buses to Berat leave Tirana's South and North Terminal between 06:10 and 17:00, typically every half-hour to hour, and cover the 89 km for about €7. Take a taxi to the terminal from the centre. If you would rather see Durrës on the way instead of as a day trip, six buses a day run from Durrës to Berat between 06:45 and 14:20, taking about two hours.

Booking note: No need to book ahead; pay in cash on board and keep small notes for the taxi to the terminal.

Albanian bus timetables change often and are not always published; confirm departures at the terminal or on the operator platform the day before.

Booking tips

  • Choose the return flight only after planning the complete Berat-to-airport journey, or spend the last night in Tirana.
  • Carry lek in small notes for buses, taxis and Berat's castle gate.
  • Visit the Berat castle early to avoid midday heat and tour groups.

Tirana → Berat, with Durrës as a day trip

Before you book the Tirana–Berat long weekend

Why not stay a night in Durrës?

Keeping two nights in Tirana avoids packing for a single coastal excursion. An overnight in Durrës is reasonable if a beach evening matters more than extra time in the capital; swap one Tirana night rather than adding another hotel to the same schedule.

Is one night in Berat enough?

On a four-day trip, yes: arrive for the evening, see the castle next morning. With more time, a second night lets you add a winery or the Osum Canyon.

Is there a train from Tirana to Durrës?

Plan this journey by bus. The Tirana–Durrës railway and airport branch are being rebuilt; construction and test announcements do not establish an operating passenger timetable. Use a train only if the railway operator has published an actual service for your date.

Can I do this trip in winter?

Yes. Tirana and Berat stay open, but Durrës's beach businesses mostly close from October, so treat it as a sightseeing stop.

What if my flight leaves early on day four?

Sleep in Tirana on night three. Move Berat earlier, returning to the capital the day before the flight, and shorten or omit Durrës if necessary. The final morning should cover the airport transfer and check-in; a coastal sightseeing detour does not fit an early departure.

Should I rent a car for these four days?

It is not needed: every leg is a frequent bus, and parking in central Tirana and in Berat's historic lanes is awkward. UK travel advice also describes Albanian driving as often aggressive, with poor rural roads, so save the car for a longer trip to the coast or mountains.

Is the Durrës sea clean enough to swim in?

Water quality varies by beach; in 2025 Albania had fewer than 70% of bathing sites rated excellent. Check the European Environment Agency map for the stretch you plan to use.
