Where should you stay in Sarandë?

For a first visit, stay on or just behind the promenade: restaurants, boat-trip desks, the Corfu ferry and the Ksamil bus are all on foot. Kodra, behind the port, is quieter and more local, and still 10–15 minutes from the central beaches. Rruga Butrinti, around Maestral Beach, has the better beaches and beach clubs but heavy summer traffic and steep side streets. Mango Beach, further out, suits a resort-style hotel stay with a car. The palm-lined promenade is Sarandë's living room: walkers at sunrise, families and couples at sunset, and restaurants, cafés and boat-trip offices in between. Staying on or just behind it puts the Corfu ferry terminal, the Ksamil and Butrint buses and the public town beach within a few minutes' walk, so you can do most day trips without a car.

Getting to Sarandë and out on day trips

Sarandë is reached by ferry from Corfu or by road from Tirana, Himarë and Gjirokastër. Corfu's airport is often the quicker way in for the far south.

Ferry from Corfu

Finikas Lines and Ionian Seaways connect the two ports. Ionian Seaways lists 30–45 minutes for fast ferries and 55–70 minutes for conventional vessels. Compare the sailing time and total fare for your date, including any baggage or vehicle conditions.

Bus from Tirana

GjirafaTravel lists ten daily buses from Tirana's South and North Terminal, including a late-night departure, taking about five hours.

From Himarë and Gjirokastër

For arrival from Himarë, the booking site lists three daily buses down the coast. From Gjirokastër it lists four, with reservable journeys of around one to one and a quarter hours. Compare the departures for your date before setting your hotel check-in time.

Day trips

Ksamil and Butrint by bus

The local bus route continues through Ksamil to Butrint; board a service marked for Butrint if visiting the site. Ksamil is roughly half an hour away before summer traffic. Ask about the return departure from your actual stop and carry lek for the fare.

The Blue Eye

The spring is about 40 minutes inland. A summer shuttle runs from Sarandë, but many Gjirokastër buses skip the turn-off, so ask the driver before boarding.

Lëkurësi Castle

The Ottoman castle built in 1537 on the hill south-east of town looks over Sarandë and out to the Ksamil islands; walk up in the cool of the evening or take a taxi.
