Why this route instead of the Riviera

The southern Riviera mixes sandy bays with pebbly coves and rocky swimming shores. Families can stay there too, but the journey from Tirana is longer and beach access varies. This week takes the other coast. North of Vlorë the shore is Adriatic: wide, sandy and shallow, with resort hotels on the sand and a shorter airport journey than the far south.

The plan starts gently with one night in Tirana, in the leafy Komuna e Parisit district next to the Grand Park and its Artificial Lake, which have lakeside paths and playgrounds. Next comes the heart of the trip, three nights at Golem, the resort strip south of Durrës where the official tourism agency singles out fine sand and shallow water as ideal for families. Durrës's Roman amphitheatre and museum are a short taxi away for one cooler morning.

The last two nights move to the Bay of Vlorë. Radhimë and Orikum offer a resort-based stay south of the city, with the actual beach, pool and access steps worth checking before booking. A Karaburun boat excursion depends on weather and the family's comfort on the water; a shorter outing to Zvërnec is another option if transport and opening hours fit.

June and September are ideal; in July and August book beachfront rooms early. Wherever you swim, check the European Environment Agency's map: bathing-water quality varies by beach in Albania.

Playgrounds by Tirana's lake

The Grand Park's paths around the Artificial Lake give children space on arrival day, a short walk from Komuna e Parisit.

Three days on Golem's sand

A wide beach with shallow entry, hotels and pools directly behind it and restaurants on foot, so no daily transport is needed.

Monastery and lagoon at Zvërnec

Cross the wooden footbridge to the island monastery and make time for the lagoon landscape. Narta supports migratory and wintering birds, including flamingos, but a visit does not guarantee sightings beside the bridge.

A Roman arena to explore

Durrës's amphitheatre was hidden under houses until 1966; children can walk its corridors and find the small chapel with early Christian mosaics inside.

A cable car up the mountain

The Dajti Ekspres climbs from Tirana's edge to the plateau above the city, with a mini-golf course and an adventure park at the top station.

Calm water on the Bay of Vlorë

Radhimë and Orikum offer beach hotels around the Bay of Vlorë. Check whether your room rate includes loungers, how you reach the swimming shore and whether there is a pool option when sea conditions change.

Best for

  • Families with small children who want sand, shallow water and short journeys
  • Parents who prefer resort hotels with pools to guesthouses

Think twice if

Travellers chasing turquoise coves and dramatic cliffs; the Riviera route south of Vlorë is the one for you.

StartBooker answer

Where should a family with young children go for a beach week in Albania?

Spend one night near Tirana's Grand Park, three at Golem for sand and shallow beach entry, and two on the Bay of Vlorë at Radhimë or Orikum. This gives a family resort holiday with two main moves and room for optional sightseeing. Choose the exact hotel's beach access and pool facilities, check local bathing-water results, and reserve the final airport transfer around your flight. A Riviera stay is also possible with young children, but involves a different journey and beach choice.

Three family-friendly bases

The stays are planned around a nearby park or beach. Check the hotel's exact access route and include local transfers when timing the moves.

Seven easy days

The main moves follow the lowland road; allow for traffic and the final ride to each hotel. From day two, keep the beach as the default and sightseeing optional.

1 Day 1 Land and head for the park

From Rinas, a taxi or the hourly airport bus reaches central Tirana in 30–40 minutes. Check in near the Grand Park in Komuna e Parisit. Let the children run along the paths around the Artificial Lake and on the playgrounds, then eat at one of the neighbourhood grills. It is a much calmer first evening than the bar streets of Blloku. If your flight lands late, skip Tirana altogether and take a taxi straight to Golem, adding the night to the beach.

  • Airport to Tirana
  • The Grand Park and lake
  • A quiet first evening

Base: Tirana

2 Day 2 Cable car in the morning, beach by afternoon

If it is not a Tuesday, ride the Dajti Ekspres cable car to the mountain plateau in the morning; go before 11:00 to avoid queues. Otherwise, browse the fruit and honey stalls of the New Bazaar. After lunch, take a taxi to Golem, about 45 minutes, and spend the afternoon on the sand. Buses run from Tirana to Durrës every 20–30 minutes, but with children and luggage a taxi to the hotel door is easier.

  • Dajti Ekspres
  • Taxi to Golem
  • First afternoon on the sand

Base: Durrës

3 Day 3 A whole day on Golem's beach

This is the day the trip is built for: shallow, sandy water, the hotel pool behind you and lunch within walking distance. Paddle boats and kayaks are common on the Durrës coast. Swim in the morning and late afternoon, and keep the midday for shade. If water quality matters to you, check the monitoring point nearest your hotel on the European Environment Agency map.

  • Beach and pool
  • Paddle boats
  • An early-evening swim

Base: Durrës

4 Day 4 Roman ruins and the promenade

Take a taxi into Durrës for the Roman amphitheatre and the renovated Archaeological Museum, which officially reopened in April 2026. Check current museum hours and admission before setting off. The Venetian Tower adds a view over the port if open that day. Allow a separate afternoon rest back at the hotel, or stay in town for the sunset promenade and dinner before returning to Golem.

  • The amphitheatre
  • The Venetian Tower
  • Sunset on the promenade

Base: Durrës

5 Day 5 South to the Bay of Vlorë

Confirm the Durrës–Vlorë bus for your date or arrange a door-to-door transfer, including child seats where needed. A bus journey also requires getting from Golem to the boarding point and from Vlorë to your hotel. After check-in at Radhimë or Orikum, keep the afternoon for the beach or pool. Treat Orikum's lagoon or archaeological site as a separate outing, checking access and opening arrangements rather than expecting an unrestricted short walk through both.

  • Transfer to Vlorë
  • Radhimë's calm bay
  • Orikum's lagoon

Base: Vlorë

6 Day 6 Choose a boat day or a lagoon outing

With children old enough for a long day on the water, take a boat from Vlorë's harbour to Haxhi Ali Cave and the Karaburun coves; shorter speedboat trips start at about €32 per person. Choose licensed operators with life jackets. With younger children, drive north to Zvërnec and cross the wooden footbridge to the island monastery on the Narta lagoon, and look for birds according to the season; sightings are uncertain. End the day with an ice cream on the Lungomare.

  • Karaburun by boat
  • Zvërnec's footbridge
  • The Lungomare

Base: Vlorë

7 Day 7 Return to Tirana airport

Reserve a Vlorë–Tirana airport shuttle or private transfer that fits the flight's check-in time. Add the journey from your Radhimë or Orikum hotel to the departure point, loading time and summer traffic. A bus to Tirana plus a separate airport connection takes longer than the headline intercity ride. For an early flight, change the last night to Tirana or an airport hotel instead of relying on this departure-day run from the coast.

  • Hermes airport shuttle
  • Or the bus to Tirana
  • A buffer for summer traffic

Base: Vlorë

Two short transfers

Both legs stay on the lowland coastal road; no mountain passes with children in the back.

2 transfers

  1. Tirana Durrës

Car Travel time: About 45 minutes by taxi

Golem is about 10 km beyond Durrës. Buses from Tirana's terminal reach Durrës every 20–30 minutes in 35–50 minutes, but you would then need a second ride to the resort strip. A taxi from central Tirana to the hotel door is the simplest option with children.

Booking note: Ask your Tirana hotel to book the taxi and agree the fare in advance.

  2. Durrës Vlorë

Car Travel time: About 2 hours by car; buses 1.5–3 hours

The 122 km run south follows the lowland road. GjirafaTravel shows only a handful of Durrës–Vlorë buses, mostly in the morning, so a pre-booked transfer is the easier choice. If you do take a bus, Vlorë's terminal is near the centre; take a taxi on to Radhimë or Orikum.

Booking note: Book the transfer a day ahead and ask for child seats if needed.

Bus times vary by season and some routes have few departures; with children, pre-booked transfers are often worth the extra cost. Confirm the day before.

What a family week costs

Transfers cost more than buses but save a lot of effort; beachfront resort rooms are the main expense.

Airport shuttles Rinas–Tirana airport bus on arrival, Vlorë–airport Hermes shuttle on departure.
400 lek in, 1,200 lek out
Buses if you use them Durrës–Vlorë buses are few; budget for one private transfer.
About €2–3 to Durrës, €8 Vlorë–Tirana
Sights and boats The reopened Durrës museum and optional marine-park excursions have separate charges; compare the exact tour duration and children's fares.
Museum admission and boat fares: check current quotes
Rooms Durrës's Plazh and Plepa strip has cheaper apartments than Golem's resort hotels.
Beachfront resorts cost most in August

Booking tips

  • Book Golem beachfront hotels early for July and August.
  • Pre-book the Durrës–Vlorë transfer with child seats.
  • Check bathing-water quality near each hotel before you book.

Albania's Adriatic coast for families

Before you book the family beach week

Is Albania good for a beach holiday with toddlers?

Yes, with the beach and accommodation chosen carefully. This route uses Golem's sandy, shallow-entry coast and keeps the journeys shorter than a trip to the far south. The Riviera also has sandy bays suitable for families; compare slopes, shade and the particular hotel's beach access rather than ruling it out by children's ages.

Why not go to Ksamil with small children?

Ksamil can work for families, with shallow sandy bays, but central beaches get busy in July and August. This route chooses Golem for a shorter arrival from Tirana and a simpler resort week. If arriving via Corfu, compare the total transfers and choose the Ksamil hotel and beach carefully.

Is the sea clean at Durrës and Vlorë?

It varies by beach. In 2025 fewer than 70% of Albania's monitored bathing sites were rated excellent, so check the European Environment Agency's map for your stretch.

Do we need a car?

Not essential. Taxis and transfers cover the two moves and most outings, though a car makes Zvërnec and Orikum easier.

When is the best month for a family beach trip?

June or September: warm water, open hotels and fewer crowds. Many Durrës beach businesses close from October.

How safe are boat trips and water sports for children?

Use licensed operators only. UK travel advice notes reports of rented jet skis and boats lacking safety equipment, so check for life jackets in children's sizes before you board, and follow lifeguards' flags on the beach.

Can we fly into Vlorë instead?

Not yet. Vlora's airport was built but had no commercial flights in summer 2026; use Tirana.

Research approach: Built from Albania's tourism agency pages for Golem, Durrës beach, Orikum and Zvërnec, the European Environment Agency's 2025 bathing-water assessment, Tirana airport's shuttle page and GjirafaTravel timetables, cross-checked with our Tirana, Durrës and Vlorë guides. This route uses fewer hotel moves and a sandy Adriatic beach base; families still need to check the hotel's beach entrance and the complete transfer time.
