Three hours up Lake Koman
The ferry threads a narrow reservoir between steep, wooded walls from Koman to Fierza, one of the most memorable boat rides in the Balkans.
Ferry to Valbona, walk the pass to Theth, then return to Shkodër.
The Albanian Alps — the Bjeshkët e Namuna, or Accursed Mountains — are the country's great hiking region, and the classic way into them is a loop: from Shkodër by van and ferry up Lake Koman to the Valbona valley, over the Valbona Pass on foot to Theth, and back to Shkodër by road. There is no direct road between the two valleys, which is exactly why the walk is so good.
This plan hikes from Valbonë to Theth. Getting to Valbonë takes the longer chain of transfers (van, ferry, van), so it is better done at the start with fresh legs; the exposed gravel section of the trail comes early in the day, before the heat; and the trip ends in Theth, which has more to do and a simpler road back. Walking the other way also works, and some prefer its forested climb.
Two nights in Theth give you a day for village sights or another walk. A delay before crossing needs a different booking: stay another night in Valbonë and rearrange the first Theth night. One night in Shkodër at the start is enough; many travellers add another at the end.
Timing is everything. The ferry sails from mid-April to early November, but the pass can hold ice and snow into June, and the Theth road can be closed by snow in winter. June to September is the usual planning season, with actual trail conditions checked locally; June and September are quieter than the July–August peak.
The ferry threads a narrow reservoir between steep, wooded walls from Koman to Fierza, one of the most memorable boat rides in the Balkans.
The old mule trail climbs through beech forest and scree to about 1,800 m before dropping into the Theth valley, with cafés on the way for mountain tea.
Choose the lock-in tower and village for a gentler day, or add Grunas waterfall for another walk. The Blue Eye trail is a longer excursion; judge it against how your legs feel after the pass.
Hire a bike for Shkodër's lakeside roads, then visit Rozafa as a separate hill climb. Its final approach is steep, so the castle ride includes parking below and walking uphill.
In Valbonë and Theth your hosts cook for the hikers who arrive each evening, usually with produce from their own gardens; book half board.
Seasonal cafés and a spring on the pass trail mean you can stop for mountain tea with honey, though you should still carry plenty of water.
Best for
Think twice if
Anyone without a moderate level of fitness or unwilling to carry a light pack for a long day; and anyone travelling outside the snow-free season.

Plan four nights: Shkodër, Valbonë and two in Theth. Reserve the early transfer to Koman, the 09:00 ferry to Fierza and the onward valley ride together. The Valbona–Theth crossing is a long mountain day, commonly seven to eight hours, with distance depending on the guesthouses and starting point. Summer is the usual season, but recent snow and weather reports decide whether to cross. Keep the bookings flexible if a delay requires another Valbonë night; finish by road from Theth to Shkodër.
A city for logistics, a valley for the start of the walk and a village to finish in.

1
Rozafa Castle, a cycling culture and the gateway to the Alps
Stay where you can reach the confirmed early pickup for Koman. Agree spare-luggage storage with the hotel and save the meeting point; door collection is an arrangement to confirm, not something every central room includes.
Watch out: Book the ferry and transfers ahead, especially in July and August or with a car.

2
Its valley, meadows and the start of the pass trail
A scattered village of guesthouses along the Valbona river, reached by van from the ferry at Fierza. Hosts cook dinner and can arrange a lift to the trailhead in the morning.
Watch out: Cash only in most places, and no ATMs; bring enough lek for the whole loop.
3
The Grunas waterfall, the Blue Eye and the Kanun-era lock-in tower
A village of stone houses and guesthouses in the Shala valley, with its church, lock-in tower and trails to the Blue Eye and Grunas waterfall.
Watch out: The road from Shkodër is paved but steep and winding; winter snow can close it.
A city evening, a boat day, a mountain day, a rest day and the road home.
Buses from Tirana take about two hours, and a direct shuttle runs from Tirana airport for 1,000 lek. Check in centrally and confirm tomorrow's pick-up for the Koman ferry, which needs booking in summer. In the afternoon, cycle towards Rozafa Castle, leave the bike below the final steep climb and walk up for the river view. Return to the centre for the pedestrian Kolë Idromeno street. Pack a small bag for four days and arrange luggage storage with the hotel. Withdraw enough lek here for the whole loop: the mountain villages have no cash machines.

Your reserved road transfer reaches Koman before Berisha's 09:00 sailing. Allow roughly two hours for the road and boarding rather than setting out from an optimistic driving estimate. The lake crossing to Fierza takes about 2.5–3 hours; compare the total ticket and transfer cost at checkout. Confirm the onward ride from Fierza to your Valbonë guesthouse when booking. After check-in, use the remaining daylight for a short valley walk and dinner, keeping the next morning's trail arrangements ready.
Base: Valbonë
Start early and agree the exact walking endpoints with the guesthouse. A taxi towards Rrogam can shorten the valley approach, while walking from accommodation adds distance; published totals vary because the starting and finishing points differ. Expect a demanding seven-to-eight-hour day, with extra time for rests, route-finding and a slower group. Carry water, food, layers and rain protection without depending on seasonal cafés. Ask locally about snow and the forecast. This itinerary assumes a walkable summer trail; persistent snow or a poor forecast means postponing the crossing or arranging another route.
Base: Theth
Keep the lock-in tower, village lanes and a shorter walk as the default after the pass. Grunas waterfall adds another outing; the Blue Eye trail can fill much of a day, depending on whether you arrange transport towards Ndërlysaj. Choose one plan rather than treating every stop as a rest-day stroll. If the crossing was delayed, this planned Theth day can become the walking day only after rearranging accommodation: the extra night is needed in Valbonë, and the Theth reservation must change. Confirm the forecast and return transfer before deciding.
Base: Theth
Reserve your Theth–Shkodër seat before the last morning. Berisha advertises 11:00 and 17:00 returns, but confirm the service for your date and the exact pick-up point. Collect stored luggage before continuing. An afternoon return can leave little room for the onward Tirana journey, so check both services together and stay in Shkodër if the connection is uncertain. A same-day flight needs its own generous transfer allowance.

Two legs: one by van and boat, and one entirely on foot.

Shkodër Valbonë
Allow for the road approach to Koman, ferry boarding, the sailing to Fierza and the onward vehicle into Valbona as separate parts of the day. Confirm whether your ticket bundles them and which guesthouse stop the final transfer reaches. Leave a rental car in Shkodër for this one-way hiking route. Taking it across the lake would leave it in the Valbona valley while you walk to Theth, requiring a separate collection journey. If you cannot hike, arrange a different road itinerary before booking the ferry.
Booking note: Reserve the ferry in advance in summer; cash price €10 per person, cars charged by floor area.
Valbonë Theth
There is no direct road over the pass between Valbona and Theth. The walking route crosses at around 1,800 metres, with a sustained climb and rocky ground; use the current local trail advice when deciding whether to cross. If conditions prevent the hike, postpone and change both guesthouse bookings or arrange the much longer road journey. Budget for that alternative before setting off: it is not a short taxi between neighbouring villages.
Booking note: Ask your Valbonë host about the trail that morning, and tell them when you expect to arrive in Theth.
Ferry dates, trail conditions and mountain transfers change with snow and season; confirm with the ferry operator and your guesthouse before setting off.
Transfers and guesthouses with meals make up almost all the spending.
Booking tips
Choose a hotel that confirms luggage storage and the meeting point for your early Koman transfer.
Shkodër, the Valbona valley and Theth; Lake Koman links the first two, and the pass the last two.
Shkodër → Valbonë → Theth
Treat it as a demanding full day rather than a short link between villages. Loose ground, sustained climbing and the descent matter as much as distance. The route length depends on where you sleep and whether you transfer to the starting point, so agree those endpoints before assessing the walk.
The usual season is summer, but snow can remain on the pass into June and conditions vary between years. Ask the accommodation or a local guide for a recent trail report and check the forecast. If the route is still snow-covered, postpone this standard walking itinerary.
Valbonë to Theth gets the van-ferry-van transfers done first and ends where transport back is easiest; Theth to Valbonë has a forested climb and ends with the ferry. Both work.
Yes, especially in summer or with a car. It runs daily from 15 April to 5 November, leaving Koman at 09:00.
Ask your Shkodër accommodation to confirm luggage storage, any charge and the collection arrangement before leaving. Carry only what you need for the mountain loop.
Take grippy walking shoes, layers, rain protection, sun protection, water and snacks, plus cash for the loop. Poles can help with a loose descent, but they do not make a snow-covered pass suitable for an ordinary summer walk. Ask about the route before packing for it.
Stay on marked paths. UK travel advice notes unexploded landmines in some remote areas near the northern border with Kosovo and recommends following local advice.
