Three coast bases with different jobs

El Gouna, Hurghada and Marsa Alam offer three different ways to spend a Red Sea holiday. Start with restaurants and lagoon walks in El Gouna, use Hurghada for a city evening and one island outing, then settle beside a southern shore reef. The sequence gives you two, three and four nights respectively, with a gentle first move and a longer drive south.

For a mixed swimming-and-town trip, choose Abu Tig Marina first, central Hurghada second and the Abu Dabbab–Marsa Shagra stretch last. Each serves a different daily routine. A suitable Marsa Alam airport departure keeps the route moving in one direction; the alternative Hurghada flight needs a separate return journey. Travellers who chiefly want an all-inclusive beach week can skip the northern hotel change.

April–May or October–November makes a useful starting point for balancing sea time with walks. Keep the island day flexible, and leave the final full day free of scuba. This is a holiday with several marine options, rather than a requirement to book a boat at every stop.

A marina base before the resort coast

Abu Tig Marina gives the first two nights an evening destination of their own, with restaurants around the yacht basin. Downtown is the alternative for lagoon walks and a broader town feel. A beach-first hotel elsewhere in El Gouna may mean a ride to dinner.

One island day with time ashore

Giftun is most rewarding here as a change of scenery: a sandy beach, a swim and lunch away from the city. Mahmya offers beach-only, lunch and reef-trip programmes, so a non-diver need not buy the most elaborate version. Day five can absorb a weather cancellation.

Choose the southern bay, not just the town

Abu Dabbab has a sandy shore entrance and beach facilities; nearby Marsa Shagra suits guests who want a reef-centred lodge. Port Ghalib works better for marina evenings and airport proximity. These are alternatives within the final base, rather than extra overnight stops.

Keep two different kinds of sea day

A supervised shore session lets you return to lunch and shade without spending a full day aboard a boat. An offshore outing is a separate choice with its own entry, sea conditions and guest requirements. Reserve it for the experience your group actually wants.

A landscape day beyond the reef

Wadi El Gemal adds mangroves, coastal desert and a different view of the southern Red Sea. Take one guided land outing if access permits, with water, shade breaks and a simple lunch. It replaces a second marine excursion; it is not an extra stop on the long transfer day.

Leave from the southern airport

Marsa Alam airport sits north of the town, so the Abu Dabbab–Shagra coast is a practical compromise for this route. Compare flights before buying hotels. A Hurghada return is possible for a later flight, but means travelling back along the coast on departure day.

Best for

  • Couples who want marina dinners, an island beach and a quieter reef stay
  • Independent travellers comfortable booking two private road transfers
  • Mixed groups who want shore time alongside optional guided snorkelling

StartBooker answer

How should you divide 10 days between El Gouna, Hurghada and Marsa Alam?

Use two nights in El Gouna, three in Hurghada and four on the Marsa Alam coast. Start around Abu Tig Marina or Downtown, move to central Hurghada on day three, then use day six for the longer southbound drive to the Abu Dabbab–Marsa Shagra area. Plan one optional Giftun beach day and a slower southern shore stay, with the final full day free of scuba. Depart through Marsa Alam airport when the flights work; an early Hurghada return requires changing the final overnight. April–May or October–November is a useful seasonal starting point.

Night allocation
El Gouna starts with two nights; Hurghada adds three; the southern coast gets four.
Northern base
Abu Tig Marina for waterfront dinners; Downtown for the lagoon town.
Southern drive
Day six: around three to four driving hours, plus a break and hotel arrival.
Island option
Mahmya offers beach-and-lunch or a fuller reef programme on Big Giftun.
Flight planning
Leave day nine free of scuba and allow the appropriate preflight surface interval.
Return airport
RMF keeps the route southbound; an early HRG flight changes the last overnight.

  1. Sunny El Gouna lagoon with low waterfront buildings, palms and turquoise water. 1

    El Gouna

    2 nights

Lagoons, marina evenings and organized water sports

Stay around Abu Tig Marina for dinners beside the yacht basin, or Downtown for lagoon walks and town restaurants. Both suit a short independent stay. Open-sea beach access is a separate amenity, so a waterfront room alone does not settle the swimming choice.

  2. White yachts moored in Hurghada Marina beside turquoise water under a bright blue daytime sky. 2

    Hurghada

    3 nights

Larger city services and conditional Giftun island trips

Central Sakkala around the marina suits this three-night city stop: independent meals and an evening waterfront walk are easier than from an outlying compound. Choose a beach resort farther south if its own shore matters more than going into town.

  3. Straw beach umbrellas, sun loungers and the sandy shore of Abu Dabbab Bay in bright daylight. 3

    Marsa Alam

    4 nights

Spaced-out shore reefs, nature areas and a slower final base

The Abu Dabbab–Marsa Shagra stretch suits a four-night reef stay north of Marsa Alam town. Choose Abu Dabbab for sandy entry or a Shagra lodge for reef-focused days. Port Ghalib is the alternative for marina dining and a shorter airport journey.

Ten days that leave room for sea conditions

Nights 1–2 are in El Gouna, 3–5 in Hurghada and 6–9 on the Marsa Alam coast. Water outings can change order within each stay; the two road moves remain on days three and six.

1 Day 1 Arrive, then dine beside Abu Tig Marina

Fly into Hurghada and continue by booked car to El Gouna. Allow roughly an hour on the road as a planning margin, with the actual time set by your hotel and airport pickup. Arrival formalities and baggage come before that drive, so a late landing makes this a check-in-and-dinner day. Two nights here give you one complete day even when the flight arrives after dark. Around Abu Tig Marina, start with a short waterside walk and an uncomplicated meal. Downtown offers a different introduction, with dining around the lagoon neighbourhoods rather than the yacht basin. Pick the nearer option after a tiring flight. Save swimming for daylight, when you can see the shore entrance clearly. A marina-facing room is useful for going out in the evening; it does not mean the yacht basin is a swimming beach.

  • Settle into the marina or Downtown
  • A short walk and dinner after the flight

Base: El Gouna

2 Day 2 Spend the full El Gouna day by the water

Make this the local beach or water-sport day. El Gouna separates lagoon swimming, open-sea beaches and kite areas: choose one that suits your group rather than trying to sample them all. The town’s beach listings explain the different facilities, while a qualified school can match a kite lesson to experience and wind. Beginners should book instruction, not simply rent equipment. Break for lunch before another short swim or a quiet afternoon. If you want a town excursion instead, the operator lists a shuttle boat between Downtown and Zaytouna Island, along with guided lagoon tours. Tuk-tuks connect central areas when a canal makes a seemingly short walk circuitous. A boat ride here is about seeing the planned town from its waterways, not a substitute for tomorrow’s coast journey. Return to your base for an evening meal without adding a distant reef excursion.

  • Lagoon, beach or one supervised lesson
  • Optional town waterways trip

Base: El Gouna

3 Day 3 Move to Hurghada and explore Sakkala

After breakfast, drive from El Gouna to the central Hurghada hotel. Around 45–60 minutes is a useful road allowance for this northern move; packing and the new check-in take additional time. Lunch near the hotel and an afternoon at its beach or pool keep the day comfortable. There is no need to buy an excursion simply because the drive is short. Sakkala gives this stop a purpose beyond another resort: take an evening walk around Hurghada Marina and choose a restaurant within an easy return ride. Compare that busy city waterfront with the smaller marina you left behind. A hotel on the southern resort strip suits guests who prefer staying on property, but it makes an independent city evening less spontaneous. For the next day, use the departure pier named by your island operator; Hurghada Marina and Mahmya Beach Marina are not interchangeable meeting points.

  • A relaxed hotel move
  • Marina evening in central Hurghada

Base: Hurghada

4 Day 4 Choose a Giftun beach day or stay ashore

For the island outing, Mahmya is a useful concrete option on Big Giftun. Its beach-and-lunch programme includes return boat travel, shaded seating and a buffet lunch; the fuller version adds an equipped snorkelling trip to Sabina Reef. Pick the beach version if the main attraction is sand and water rather than an extra offshore session. Hotel-to-pier transport needs arranging separately. The operator’s published daytime programme leaves at 8:30 and returns around 16:00, with arrival at the pier at least half an hour before sailing. Reconfirm the booked schedule, as a sunset programme differs. That makes this the day’s main event, with time for dinner after returning rather than another organised outing. Wind can change sailing or swimming plans. If the trip cannot go, swap this day with tomorrow’s city-and-beach programme instead of moving an excursion onto the southbound transfer.

  • Beach and lunch on Big Giftun
  • Weather fallback within the Hurghada stay

Base: Hurghada

5 Day 5 Pair a local beach with El Dahar

Keep the morning at a usable hotel shore. After lunch and a rest, an optional ride to El Dahar adds the older part of Hurghada and its markets, rather than repeating the marina evening. A short browsing circuit is enough; this is still primarily a coastal holiday. Return for dinner in your own district, leaving purchases and lengthy shopping tours optional. This is also the spare day for yesterday’s island trip. If that goes ahead today, omit El Dahar rather than trying to fit it around a full boat programme. Guests in an all-inclusive resort can simply enjoy the facilities they have paid for. The route gains variety from the next base, so two consecutive offshore days are unnecessary. For tomorrow’s drive, have the southern hotel location ready: a village north of Marsa Alam town is a different endpoint from a resort beyond Wadi El Gemal.

  • Hotel shore and a shaded lunch break
  • Optional market visit in El Dahar

Base: Hurghada

6 Day 6 Drive south, with only a shore walk afterwards

Use daylight for the longer drive to the Marsa Alam coast. The Marsa Shagra operator estimates three hours from Hurghada, while a transfer operator lists about four hours to Marsa Alam town. Allow roughly three to four hours driving for the recommended northern bay area, plus a break and hotel formalities. Farther-south resorts extend the journey. A comfortable arrival matters more than squeezing in an afternoon booking. The road runs between desert and sea; the change in landscape is part of the journey, even without a sightseeing detour. Have lunch before leaving or agree a stop with the driver. At the new base, take a short orientation walk to the beach and settle into its meal arrangements. Resort board or a lodge buffet is useful here because independent dining is less convenient than in central Hurghada. Leave the first reef session until tomorrow, when you have time for a proper introduction.

  • Three to four hours driving, plus a break
  • Arrive without a booked dive

Base: Marsa Alam

7 Day 7 Discover the shore reef at your southern base

Make your first southern morning a supervised introduction to the local shore. Abu Dabbab offers sand, shade and lifeguarded beach facilities; Marsa Shagra describes a sheltered beach entry to its house reef. These are two nearby options, not an instruction to visit both. Conditions and the designated swim area still determine what is suitable, especially for a novice. The attraction is the contrast between the bay, seagrass and reef edge. Watch marine life from a respectful distance: no touching coral, feeding fish or surrounding a turtle. A guide should explain the exit and help your group stay within its ability. If you struggle with flotation or the sea is unsuitable, a beach afternoon remains worthwhile. Eat lunch ashore and leave time to rest. A second brief session is optional; a successful reef day does not need hours in the water or a promised animal encounter.

  • A guided shore introduction
  • Lunch and rest without a long boat ride

Base: Marsa Alam

8 Day 8 Pick Wadi El Gemal or one further marine outing

A guided Wadi El Gemal land day gives the south more than a beach identity. The protected landscape includes coastal desert, mangroves and seagrass habitats. Choose a defined excursion with a named access point and a return to your hotel, bringing water and a simple lunch. From a northern bay base, the road journey makes this a full-day choice; do not combine it with scuba. Access to individual beaches can change, so the guide must confirm the actual site being visited rather than promise every location in an old itinerary. If the land outing is unavailable or a long drive does not appeal, replace it with a rest day or one suitable marine excursion. Certified divers can use this as their final scuba day before the day-ten flight, following their operator and dive-computer restrictions. An offshore reef requires experience appropriate to that site; a beach-entry snorkel does not qualify someone for advanced diving.

  • One full land outing, if wanted
  • Alternative reef outing for suitable guests

Base: Marsa Alam

9 Day 9 Leave the last full day free of scuba

Spend the final full day at the coast without another hotel change. Choose a gentle shore swim, a shaded beach morning or simply a long lunch and time to read. Keeping this day free of scuba creates breathing room before flying. DAN recommends at least 18 hours after repeated or multiday no-decompression diving, with longer intervals reducing risk; dives requiring decompression need a substantially longer interval. Follow any stricter operator or computer instruction. There is a practical payoff to doing less today: your southern stay ends with a holiday afternoon rather than equipment collection and a hurried transfer. A brief snorkel is optional in suitable conditions, but the remaining excursion credit is no reason to force a last outing. Pack after dinner and use the pickup already agreed for tomorrow. Guests who need an early Hurghada flight should follow the adjusted final-night version explained below, rather than improvise an overnight drive.

  • Rest, shore swimming or a slow lunch
  • No scuba before the flight day

Base: Marsa Alam

10 Day 10 Depart via Marsa Alam, or take the northern return

The standard plan ends after four southern nights with a transfer to Marsa Alam airport. From Marsa Shagra the operator estimates about half an hour driving; other resorts need their own allowance. Add the airline’s required check-in time to that road journey. A later flight leaves room for breakfast, but luggage, checkout and the terminal journey are this day’s main programme. For a later Hurghada flight, budget a separate northbound car and roughly three to four hours on the road, plus breaks and airport time. An early HRG departure is better served by returning north on day nine and sleeping there: keep ten days and nine nights by reducing the southern stay to three nights and adding one Hurghada night. That variant removes the southern rest day and introduces a third hotel move. Do not add the northern night on top of the nine already listed unless you also extend the holiday.

  • RMF is the simplest endpoint
  • Early HRG flights change night nine

Base: Marsa Alam

Two road moves and one real departure decision

Private cars are the main transport in this plan. These ranges cover driving, with checkout, meals and new-room access outside the estimate; every quote needs both hotel addresses.

2 transfers

  1. El Gouna Hurghada

Car Travel time: About 45–60 minutes driving to central Hurghada

El Gouna lies about 25 km north of Hurghada. Allow around 45–60 minutes driving to a central hotel; a resort farther south takes longer. A prebooked car keeps this short move simple with luggage.

  2. Hurghada Marsa Alam

Car Travel time: Around 3–4 hours driving to the northern bays

Marsa Shagra lists a three-hour Hurghada transfer; Marsa Alam town estimates are nearer four hours. For the northern bay stretch, plan three to four hours driving plus a break. Avoid adding a prepaid outing after arrival.

Major costs for nine nights on the coast

For two adults sharing, these October 2026 checks mix published examples with labelled allowances. The southern tariff ends on 31 October; northern rooms remain a broad benchmark. Flights, insurance, visa, tips and optional outings are additional.

Northern accommodation Rough Guides, May 2025: Egypt mid-range hotels including Red Sea stays. Dates and occupancy unspecified; five nights cost US$250–500 only if those room rates are available.
Broad mid-range benchmark: US$50–100 per room-night
Southern lodge example Marsa Shagra Deluxe Chalet, double occupancy, foreign non-residents, May–October 2026 high-season tariff. Full board and standard soft drinks included; diving extra.
Four nights for two adults: €976, plus €20 environmental fees
Meals outside the lodge Allow €250–400 for two over five northern days as a personal spending allocation for meals and drinks; reduce it for included meals. Premium dinners and alcohol need more.
Chosen allowance: €25–40 per adult daily in the north
Arrival, northern move and local rides This covers HRG–El Gouna, the day-three car and short town or pier rides as a planning reserve, not an observed fare. Get inclusive quotes before fixing the final sum.
Chosen reserve: €100–150 per couple
Hurghada to the southern lodge The operator lists €68 per person when two travel from Hurghada Airport/City. This is its transfer arrangement to Shagra; another bay or a private-only vehicle may differ.
Marsa Shagra tariff example: €136 for two, one way
Southern airport exit The same tariff lists €32 per person for two travellers. Departing through HRG instead uses its €136 two-person northern transfer example and a longer road day.
Marsa Shagra to RMF: €64 for two, one way
Giftun island option Published €60 per adult; boat, beach and buffet included, taxes and fees included, charged in EGP equivalent. Full programme €85 each; hotel-to-marina travel separate.
Mahmya with lunch: €120 for two adults
Extra southern outing The main route works without either addition. A land quote needs transport, guide, lunch and admission; scuba needs the appropriate package, equipment and site fees.
Optional Wadi El Gemal or scuba: separate quote

Booking tips

  • Book the flight endpoints first. A lower Hurghada return fare may lose its saving once the extra road journey and any northern hotel night are included.
  • Compare the meal plan as well as the room. Paying for full board in El Gouna can be poor value if marina restaurants are the point of your stay; a remote southern lodge makes included meals more useful.
  • Ask a reef hotel whether non-divers can use the designated bay and which activities require a separate package. Accommodation beside a house reef does not include scuba equipment, instruction or every boat trip.
  • For families, price the actual child ages and rooms. Mahmya’s programme page says children aged seven are charged as adults; its headline child price therefore is not a discount for every school-age child.
  • Check passport-specific Egyptian visa rules before payment. British visitors normally require a visa for this mainland coast route; the restricted South Sinai resort permission does not cover it.
  • Choose flexible excursion terms when possible. Keep the road transfers fixed to the base changes and let the boat outing move within the Hurghada stay, rather than paying for two overlapping programmes.

Questions before you book this coast route

Could I do this with just two hotel bases?

Yes. Combine the five northern nights in El Gouna for marina-and-lagoon evenings, or in Hurghada for city access and a wider resort choice, then keep four southern nights. That removes day three’s checkout. The three-base version is worthwhile when you want to experience both northern towns rather than treat every stay as an interchangeable beach resort.

Is winter warm enough for this coast route?

Winter works particularly well for marina walks and the road journey. Long swims can feel cool, especially with wind on a boat; consider suitable exposure protection for snorkelling. Keep expectations different from a summer beach holiday: a sunny lunch ashore can be more comfortable than staying wet offshore for hours.

How should I adapt the trip in July or August?

Use the shore early, rest through the hottest part of the afternoon and leave town walks until later. Air-conditioned transfers remain practical, but a long exposed desert outing is less appealing. A swimming-focused version can work; travellers hoping to spend full days walking outdoors should choose a milder period.

Does a sandy beach make the whole trip suitable for non-swimmers?

A sandy entrance helps, but it does not establish safe conditions or turn offshore snorkelling into a non-swimming activity. Abu Dabbab lists lifeguarded beach facilities, and Mahmya has a beach-only programme. Those choices let a mixed group enjoy time ashore while confident swimmers take a suitable guided session.

Will I definitely see a turtle or dugong?

No. Treat wildlife as a possible encounter during an otherwise worthwhile reef visit. Seagrass and coral habitats matter even when the familiar animal is absent. Decline a provider that encourages guests to touch, feed or corner wildlife; a dramatic brochure photograph is not a promise about your own swim.

Who arranges protected-area admission?

The Ministry of Environment allows booking through a company or by registering independently. For an organised outing, establish who obtains admission and which site the itinerary actually covers. A transfer fare alone does not purchase park access. An operator’s all-inclusive price applies to that named programme, not every beach along the coast.

What does this plan offer a wheelchair user?

Marsa Shagra lists an adapted chalet, which is a useful accommodation lead rather than proof that every shore and excursion is accessible. Get specific confirmation of the bedroom, bathroom, beach approach and vehicle transfer. Sand and boat boarding can remain obstacles, so build the programme around facilities the property can demonstrate.

Can I add Luxor as a day trip?

This route already uses ten days for a coastal holiday. A long inland day removes the rest or marine time each base was chosen for. Give Luxor its own overnight stay and extend or redesign the journey if temples are a priority; the Hurghada–Luxor route is a better starting point for that combination.
