Use the change of pace, not a checklist of dive sites

Sharm and Dahab reward different kinds of beach holiday. Begin in Naama Bay if you want a sandy shoreline, restaurants and evenings beyond a resort gate. Then move north to Dahab for cafés beside the Gulf of Aqaba and water sessions that start from shore. Three nights in each gives you two full days per base, an arrival afternoon and a gentle hotel-change day. Fly into and out of Sharm; the last airport drive starts in Dahab.

This week suits a couple or friends who want the sea without diving every day. Ras Mohammed is the main Sharm excursion; Dahab has a local shore session and a choice of Blue Hole sightseeing or a guided land outing. Neither famous site is compulsory. Keep day six free of scuba before the flight, and leave meals and afternoons unhurried. April–May and October–November offer a useful balance; winter favours land walks but feels cooler after swimming. A dawn departure is awkward with the final night in Dahab: this plan works best with an afternoon or evening flight.

Choose sand or a house reef

Naama Bay makes a mixed holiday easy because you can leave the hotel on foot for dinner. Reef-focused Ras Um Sid offers a different attraction: coral scenery beneath a cliffside coast. A pier or stepped entrance matters more than the resort star rating for a hesitant swimmer.

See where the desert meets the reef

Ras Mohammed occupies the southern tip of Sinai. A boat day concentrates on marine sites; a road visit adds the dry-land setting. Choose the experience you want rather than assuming those two trips share an itinerary. A full-day boat outing leaves little appetite for another evening excursion.

Enjoy Dahab between water sessions

Lighthouse and Mashraba give independent travellers a useful stretch of waterfront for meals and dive-centre meetings. The attraction is staying long enough to have an ordinary lunch and a second evening here, rather than returning to Sharm with a day-trip group. A beach café need not have a sandy swimming entrance.

Know the two different lagoons

Dahab Laguna is near town, while the Blue Lagoon belongs to the Ras Abu Galum excursion area farther north. They are not interchangeable map pins. Wind- and kitesurfing trips need their own instruction, transport and conditions; neither is an automatic addition to a Blue Hole visit.

Make room for the town on land

Dahab’s Friday Market gives a scheduled town day an extra reason to wander: local crafts and food, rather than another drive to a reef. Add it only if your dates include Friday. In Sharm, the museum offers a different kind of indoor break, with collections extending beyond ancient Egypt.

Plan access for your whole party

Shore diving saves boat travel but still involves equipment and an uneven entry. A beach property can have steps between reception, rooms and water. If limited mobility affects the trip, obtain the actual access route and the operator’s assistance plan before choosing between a boat, shore session and land day.

Best for

  • Travellers who want two distinct South Sinai bases without a long multi-stop road circuit
  • Snorkellers who can match their swimming ability to supervised shore or boat conditions
  • Visitors content with one intercity move and an explicit airport return from Dahab

StartBooker answer

Can you combine Sharm el-Sheikh and Dahab in one week without rushing?

Spend three nights in Sharm el-Sheikh and three in Dahab, moving north on day four. Naama Bay suits a mixed beach-and-town start; Lighthouse or Mashraba works for independent meals and shore sessions in Dahab. Reserve one Sharm day for an optional Ras Mohammed outing and keep the final full day free of scuba. The last drive from Dahab to Sharm airport is a separate transfer. An afternoon or evening flight makes this six-night plan easier; April–May or October–November offers a useful balance of sea time and land walks.

Seven days with real sea and transfer time

The water days are options tied to conditions and skills. Adjust their order when the operator has a better forecast.

1 Day 1 Arrive in Sharm and settle into your chosen bay

Arrive through Sharm el-Sheikh airport and transfer to your hotel. Immigration and baggage belong in the day’s plan, so an afternoon landing needs no prepaid outing. Once settled, take a short daylight walk to the beach. Find the usable entrance: sand, steps and a jetty over coral offer very different first swims. A sheltered patch that works for one person may still be beyond another’s confidence. Keep the first session short and within the supervised area. For dinner, use the part of Naama Bay closest to your room rather than travelling across Sharm on the first evening. Guests in a reef resort may prefer eating on site tonight and using day three for a town visit. The coast is spread across separate bays, not one continuous walking centre. Leave tomorrow’s boat decision until you have rested and heard the operator’s conditions report. Tonight is the first of three Sharm nights; there is no need to make the arrival day do the work of a full beach day.

  • Reach your chosen bay
  • Confirm actual swim entry

Base: Sharm el-Sheikh

2 Day 2 Spend one full day on a Ras Mohammed outing

A Ras Mohammed boat trip is the week’s substantial marine outing. Coral walls and fish life make it worthwhile, but the actual sites depend on the day’s programme and sea. Camel describes boat departures around 08:00–08:30 and returns around 16:00–17:00; hotel pickup is earlier. That is a full day, with lunch and shade breaks between water sessions. A road visit is a separate choice if you would rather see the park’s desert landscape and shoreline. Use a CDWS-listed provider and settle the essentials together: park admission, equipment, flotation, supervision and cancellation. The guide should explain the entry and exit before anyone gets in. Keep fins and feet away from coral, and leave marine life undisturbed. A snorkelling stop is optional for anyone tired or uncomfortable; staying aboard must be a sensible alternative. If wind cancels the excursion, swap it with tomorrow’s local day. Back at the hotel, have a simple dinner rather than committing to another cross-town trip.

  • Confirm park access
  • Match reef stops to ability

Base: Sharm el-Sheikh

3 Day 3 Stay local: a beach morning and a Sharm evening

Spend the morning at your own beach, with an unhurried lunch and a shaded break afterward. This is the day to enjoy the shore you chose rather than buy a second boat simply because departures are advertised. If yesterday’s Ras Mohammed trip was postponed, let it take this whole day instead and drop the land visit. There are two full Sharm days, not room for three major excursions. For a different view of Sharm, choose the Old Market later in the day. The stalls, spices and Sahaba Mosque make a compact change from the resort waterfront; a taxi is useful from Naama Bay. The Sharm museum is an alternative for travellers who prefer collections and an indoor visit. Select one according to your interests and hotel location, leaving the other out. A Naama-based guest can also stay local for dinner and a promenade walk. Pack after the evening meal, ready to leave after breakfast tomorrow. Tonight completes the three-night Sharm stay.

  • Choose a comfortable swim
  • See a different side of Sharm

Base: Sharm el-Sheikh

4 Day 4 Drive to Dahab, then learn the promenade

After breakfast, take the private transfer north to Dahab. The tourism authority describes the town as about 90 km from Sharm; a transfer operator gives roughly 90 minutes from the airport, with hotel positions and checkpoints adding time. Allow about two hours for the hotel-to-hotel move as a planning margin, then lunch and check-in. A prepaid afternoon dive would make an otherwise easy day unnecessarily tight. Walk a manageable part of the seafront once the heat eases. In a central stay, begin with the streets around Lighthouse or Mashraba; find a place for dinner and the meeting point for tomorrow’s water session. If you chose an outer hotel, use a short taxi trip into town rather than assuming the waterfront distances are small. Let the first Dahab afternoon be an introduction to the cafés and everyday shoreline. A shop selling snorkelling gear is useful, but it does not establish that the water outside has a safe entrance. This is your fourth hotel night and the first of three in Dahab.

  • Complete the one hotel change
  • Walk a manageable seafront section

Base: Dahab

5 Day 5 Try Dahab from shore before chasing its famous name

Try a guided shore session at a site suited to your ability, such as the Lighthouse area if conditions allow. Close-to-town access lets this be a half-day experience followed by lunch and an easy afternoon. Beginners can take an introductory lesson; certified divers should discuss recent experience and a refresher if needed. The Blue Hole’s fame does not make it the right first site. Non-divers can enjoy a guided surface session or simply spend the morning by the water. Today is the last scuba day in this plan. DAN recommends at least 18 hours before flying after repeated no-decompression dives, and longer after dives requiring decompression. A complete day six without scuba gives a larger margin, but the dive profile and your instructor’s advice still govern. Avoid an altitude excursion after diving, too. Take the afternoon for a café lunch, a short wander and rest. Choose a different restaurant for the second Dahab evening rather than adding another outing; the holiday gains as much from being here as from changing sites.

  • Use a suitable local dive or snorkel site
  • Keep the afternoon for the town

Base: Dahab

6 Day 6 Keep the final full day for the surface or land

For an optional Blue Hole visit, go with an organised operator that handles the road access and protected-area admission. The circular reef opening is striking from shore, and a supervised surface session may suit confident snorkellers when conditions permit. The deep Arch belongs to technical diving and has no place in this holiday plan. Do not add scuba today, or turn a shore visit into an improvised freediving challenge. A relaxed waterfront day is a good alternative if you do not want another paid outing. Travellers who have not been scuba diving can instead choose a guided mountain-edge walk, such as a Wadi Gnai outing arranged locally. Use an approved operator, with access, terrain and return transport agreed beforehand; the wider Sinai interior is not interchangeable with the resort coast. Keep it short in hot weather and take a meal break. Pick the land trip or Blue Hole, rather than both. Finish with a final dinner in Dahab and an early night if tomorrow’s airport collection requires one.

  • Optional supervised Blue Hole visit
  • No scuba before the flight

Base: Dahab

7 Day 7 Return to Sharm airport after the sixth night

The sixth night was in Dahab, so today includes a separate drive back to Sharm airport. An afternoon or evening departure leaves room for breakfast and perhaps a short seafront walk. Plan roughly 90 minutes on the road, plus pickup and checkpoint margin and the airline’s check-in requirement. This is not a ninety-minute hotel-door-to-boarding promise. Give the provider your flight details and book a vehicle to the terminal, rather than a bus to a Sharm town stop. A dawn flight needs a very early prearranged collection and makes this final Dahab night less appealing. Before buying accommodation, decide whether that combination is acceptable; moving the last night to Sharm creates a different four-Sharm/two-Dahab arrangement and an additional hotel change. Do not quietly add a seventh night to this route. There is no water excursion on departure day. Travellers who skipped scuba can use the morning freely within the transfer window; those who dived still need their agreed preflight interval.

  • Travel to Sharm airport
  • Leave a real check-in margin

Base: Dahab

One northbound transfer, then a separate flight-day return

The hotel-to-hotel change is on day four; Dahab to Sharm airport on day seven is a departure transfer, not another hotel base.

Car Travel time: About 2 hours door to door; allow checkpoint margin

Take a prearranged private car from your Sharm hotel to Dahab on day four. Budget about two hours door to door, with lunch and check-in afterward. Airport pickup takes roughly 90 minutes on the road; resort gates and checkpoints can lengthen the hotel move.

A six-night planning budget, with the main costs visible

For two adults sharing a double room in autumn 2026, use about £1,300 as a working envelope before flights, visas and insurance. Rates below were viewed on 9 October; allowances are spending choices, not a bookable package.

Three Sharm nights £80 a night sits within KAYAK’s displayed £60–95 Camel double-room examples for two guests, 10–11 September 2026, with VAT. Those past dates are a reference, not an October quote.
£240 chosen room allowance
Three Dahab nights Dahab Paradise’s discounted double/twin is £75 per room/night B&B in October–December. This outer-coast example adds town transport; confirm taxes and your dates.
£225 at the displayed seasonal tariff
Arrival, hotel move and departure Oonas’ airport transfer is €13pp. Scuba Seekers quotes €45/vehicle for 1–3 between Dahab and Sharm airport; the day-four resort pickup needs its own quote.
£120 chosen transport allowance
Meals, water and café stops This is £15 per person/day beyond included breakfasts. It is a spending limit, not a local menu average; restaurant choice, alcohol and a Sharm board upgrade can change it.
£210 chosen allowance for two over seven days
One Sharm snorkelling boat Camel: €62pp boat + €7 park + €10 lunch/drinks = €79pp; equipment, hotel transfers and 14% VAT included. Additional site fees and destinations vary.
€158 for two with the listed additions
Optional Dahab scuba lesson Scuba Seekers 2026: €55pp, half day/one introductory dive with gear. A certified two-dive day costs differently; full courses need a longer Dahab stay.
€110 for two introductory dives
Optional Blue Hole day Scuba Seekers lists a US$20 daily park fee per person. Transport and supervision depend on the booked visit; the fee alone buys neither a guide nor a suitable water session.
US$40 admission reference for two, plus the visit
Activities envelope Chosen activity allowance includes the boat, introductory scuba and Blue Hole transport/admission. Providers charge euros/dollars; use your payment-date exchange rate.
£300 chosen allowance for both travellers
Local rides and contingency £465 rooms + £120 transfers + £210 meals + £300 activities + £175 reserve = £1,270. Reserve covers local rides/tax uncertainty; a guided land outing costs extra.
£175 chosen reserve; about £1,300 overall

Booking tips

  • For solo travel, replace shared-room arithmetic with a single tariff. Dahab Paradise lists £58 for a discounted single with breakfast in October–December, compared with £75 for the double room; shared vehicle prices also cost more per person alone.
  • A seven-night dive-and-stay offer is not a three-night room tariff. Compare its exact included boat days and airport transfers with the stay you will use, without dividing the package price by seven.
  • Use cancellation terms that leave the Sharm marine day movable. Camel’s advance diving rates require finalisation 48 hours before arrival; its published package deposit is 35% and non-refundable, so read the terms for the service you select.
  • The Dahab Paradise example includes breakfast, but free Sharm airport transfer requires seven direct-booked nights. This route stays only three nights there; keep the departure vehicle in your transport budget.
  • A hotel’s cheapest room and a useful beach stay can be different purchases. Compare the room’s included shore access and meal plan with what you will use; paying a separate beach charge each day can erase an attractive accommodation saving.

Sharm el-Sheikh and Dahab

Questions that change this Sinai week

Is a week enough for both Sharm and Dahab?

Yes, for a first taste of each rather than a complete South Sinai circuit. Three nights per base gives two full days in each town, with day four for the move and day seven for departure. A dive course, Mount Sinai climb and Ras Abu Galum detour would crowd that plan; choose a longer Dahab stay if one of those is the main purpose. Keeping them out lets the holiday work even when a marine outing is cancelled.

Can I swim or snorkel in winter?

Often, but the wind can make getting out of the water less comfortable than the sunny shore suggests. Poseidon’s local conditions guide recommends warmer exposure protection in winter and a warm layer afterward. A short supervised shore session may be preferable to a long boat day for someone who chills easily. Pick the day’s site with the operator; a sheltered entrance matters more than sunshine alone.

Which season gives the best mix of water and land?

April–May or October–November are useful choices for a mixed holiday. Winter is attractive for daytime walks but brings cooler water and evenings; midsummer suits travellers who want the sea and can retreat indoors during the hottest hours. Dahab’s onshore breeze changes comfort on land and after swimming. For a mountain outing, choose a milder period and a short morning plan instead of expecting an all-day summer hike.

Can a non-swimmer enjoy this itinerary?

Yes, if the beach stay and town time are the main attraction. Use the Sharm museum or Old Market, spend time at Dahab’s seafront cafés and consider a suitable guided land outing. A boat sold as snorkelling does not automatically have a good programme for someone remaining aboard: establish whether shade, seating and a passenger option meet your needs. Skip the Blue Hole water session rather than treating flotation as a substitute for swimming ability.

Is the Blue Hole a beginner diving stop?

It should not be the default site for a first lesson. Dahab has town-side shore options that a qualified centre can assess for you. The Blue Hole contains several very different dive profiles, and its deep Arch is for technical divers. This route uses it only as an optional shore or supervised surface visit on day six. A confident holiday swimmer still needs a conditions-appropriate briefing and entry plan.

Can I complete an Open Water course during this week?

An introductory experience fits the Dahab half-day; a full certification course does not fit the two full Dahab days assumed here. Scuba Seekers lists its Open Water course at four days, with progress depending on the student. Stay longer in Dahab or make the whole holiday a course stay. You also need a preflight interval afterward, so the flight date must follow the training plan rather than force its finish.

Do I need to book protected-area admission myself?

An organised boat or shore package may handle admission, while an independently arranged visit can require you to use the Ministry’s ticket process. Obtain one itemised quote showing who handles entry. Ras Mohammed and the Blue Hole are listed protected-area destinations; the park charge is separate from the operator’s guiding, equipment and transport unless expressly included. A ticket never guarantees suitable sea conditions.

Is the free South Sinai stamp enough for this route?

For British passport holders arriving by air at Sharm, FCDO describes free entry permission for stays under 15 days at the specified Sharm, Dahab, Nuweiba and Taba resorts. It requires a visa for travel outside those resorts. Do not assume that covers Ras Mohammed or an inland excursion; resolve their eligibility before arrival and obtain the appropriate visa if needed. Other nationalities and arrival routes have different rules.

Does the hotel search cover both overnight bases?

The live hotel list on this page searches Sharm el-Sheikh, while the route map marks both Sharm and Dahab. Compare Naama Bay positions for the first stay, then book Dahab separately around the actual Lighthouse or Mashraba streets you want to use. A result labelled Sharm can be in another bay, and a Dahab sea-view property can sit well outside the central promenade. Treat the precise address as part of the accommodation choice.
