Give the coast real time before moving inland

This week answers a common planning problem: a Red Sea holiday sounds relaxing until a predawn Luxor day trip takes nearly every waking hour. The answer here is to stay in two places. Four Hurghada nights give the sea room for weather, choice and rest. A road transfer then becomes its own day, followed by two Luxor nights for visits on both banks of the Nile.

The main plan arrives at Hurghada airport and finishes in Luxor. It suits a beach-led holiday with a substantial taste of ancient Thebes, rather than a first visit that must include the pyramids. The contrast is the point: salt water and an island beach first, then enormous temple columns and tombs cut into desert hills. One hotel change is enough.

Days two to four are interchangeable, with one organised island outing and two days for the shore or town. Day five is chiefly transport; day six carries the West Bank visit. An early arrival or late departure adds possibilities, but the route does not rely on either. Book the onward journey before choosing hotels, since a return flight from Hurghada changes the final day.

Sakala keeps town and sea within reach

For a first mixed holiday, look around Sakala and Sheraton Road: the marina and restaurant choices make an evening outside the hotel straightforward. You give up the seclusion of a southern resort. A private-beach property here can combine swimming with town access; a city-centre address alone does not include beach entry.

Choose the island programme you actually want

Giftun trips are not all the same day. Mahmya is a beach on Big Giftun, with separate beach-only, lunch and offshore-snorkelling programmes. A beach-first traveller need not buy the reef boat too. Compare the named landing and time ashore when another excursion advertises an island photograph.

A reef briefing tells you about the operator

The CDWS Green Fins code expects operators to explain environmental practice and enforce no touching of reef life. Listen for guidance on fin clearance, waste and moorings, rather than promises of wildlife contact. This protects the reef; it does not by itself establish the boat's safety standards, which need their own briefing.

Karnak gives the Nile leg a different scale

Karnak was a centre of worship for Amun, enlarged by successive rulers. Its great hall contains 134 columns, but the ram-headed sphinxes, obelisks and sacred lake give the precinct more variety than a single famous view suggests. Choose a few points of interest and allow time to stop, rather than walking every court after the desert drive.

Compare a hidden burial with a public monument

The royal valley concealed its burials beneath a pyramid-shaped peak. Hatshepsut's nearby mortuary temple instead presents broad terraces against a cliff. That contrast makes it a worthwhile optional second visit: look for her Osiris-form statues and the reliefs of the expedition to Punt, rather than expecting another tomb interior.

Select a season for swimming and stone

March and early April are a useful compromise for this coast-heavy week; late autumn also suits many visitors. Winter favours longer temple walks but can feel cool after swimming. Summer requires short Luxor mornings and midday rest. Spring can bring hot, dusty Khamsin winds, so a pleasant monthly average cannot settle a boat departure.

Best for

  • Travellers who want several usable sea days and archaeological context in one week
  • Families or first-time snorkellers who can choose a sheltered hotel and keep boat plans flexible
  • Visitors able to finish in Luxor or add an onward travel day

StartBooker answer

How should I split a week between Hurghada and Luxor?

Spend four nights in Hurghada and two in Luxor, arriving on the coast and leaving from the Nile. Use the coast days for a hotel beach, one optional Giftun outing and town time, then make day five a daytime road transfer. A central East Bank Luxor hotel suits this short stay; visit one temple after arrival if time allows and the royal tombs the following morning. March or early April balances the two halves well. A return flight from Hurghada requires another road leg and may change the final overnight.

Hotel nights
Four on the Red Sea, then two beside the Nile
Road planning
Allow 5–6 hours door to door; the tourism road estimate is about four
Island choice
Beach-only and reef programmes buy different activities
Luxor geography
East Bank temples and West Bank burials require separate journeys
Departure
Finish in Luxor; a Hurghada flight adds another desert crossing
Warm-season limit
Short outdoor Luxor visits and a midday rest are preferable in summer

A beach-led week with one move inland

The first and final days depend on actual flights; the middle of the week does the sightseeing work.

1 Day 1 Land in Hurghada and test the real beach

Go directly to your coast hotel and make the first afternoon about settling in. A late flight may leave only dinner; an early one can allow a short swim. Walk from your room to the actual water entry. Sand, rocky shallows and a pier ask different things of a swimmer, even when each property uses the word beachfront. Families should prioritise a supervised swimming area and a straightforward route back to shade. This is also the time to decide whether you want a boat day built around snorkelling or mainly a beach landing. A nervous swimmer can enjoy the coast without committing to an offshore reef. Tell the operator your ability before reserving, and find out where the harbour pickup begins. Keep the evening easy after travel: eat at the hotel or, if you chose Sakala, take a short look around the marina. There are four nights here, so arrival does not need an excursion to count as a holiday day.

  • Settle into the Hurghada hotel
  • Find the actual shore entry

Base: Hurghada

2 Day 2 Make Giftun an island day only if the sea cooperates

Use a full day for Giftun if conditions are suitable. Mahmya's daytime programme currently leaves its Hurghada marina at 08:30 and returns at 16:00; the operator asks guests to arrive at least half an hour before departure. Hotel transport adds time outside that window. Another beach operator may follow a different schedule, so choose the outing by the actual time on the island. The beach is the main experience: swimming, shade and a leisurely lunch. A separate reef trip is an option for comfortable swimmers, not an obligation. Before the boat leaves, locate your lifejacket and listen to the crew's safety briefing. Red Sea boat standards vary, and clear water does not remove that concern. In the water, leave coral and animals untouched and keep fins away from the reef. If wind cancels the crossing, exchange this day with day three or four. Finish with an unscheduled evening rather than adding another paid activity.

  • A full island-beach day
  • Optional supervised reef session

Base: Hurghada

3 Day 3 Choose a beach routine that matches your ability

Use the hotel shore this morning, with a supervised introductory snorkel session only if you want one. A second offshore excursion is unnecessary when the island day has already supplied the sea experience you came for. Divers can use this free day for an appropriately qualified activity, but that changes the day's cost and insurance needs. The main holiday still works without diving. For a different afternoon, visit El Dahar's markets and local restaurants, or stay closer to the marina promenade for dinner overlooking the boats. Dahar is the older part of town; Sakala and the southern resorts have a different, more tourism-led character. Dress modestly away from the beach and agree any taxi journey before setting off. Hurghada Museum offers another optional change of scene for someone who wants context before Luxor. Choose one town outing and leave room for lunch and a return to the hotel; this need not become a checklist of every coastal attraction.

  • Use the hotel shore or a vetted local water activity
  • Keep the afternoon genuinely free

Base: Hurghada

4 Day 4 Hold one flexible coast day and prepare the desert crossing

Keep today flexible. Take the island outing here if the earlier booking was cancelled and a suitable departure is available; otherwise enjoy the last full coast day. A beach stay benefits from a morning with no pickup at all. Choose a long lunch or a final swim instead of treating the spare day as an invitation to add Cairo, which is outside this route. Arrange tomorrow's car while you still have time to settle the details. The written quote should cover your exact hotel entrance, luggage, a daytime departure, a rest break and the Luxor hotel drop-off. Specify the bank of the Nile and any child-seat requirement. A vehicle and a guided sightseeing excursion are different purchases; you need an overnight transfer, not a coach seat whose price assumes a same-day return. Once that is settled, the final Hurghada evening can stay free. The next hotel is already booked for two nights, so the driver is taking you to a base rather than squeezing Luxor into a round trip.

  • A final coast day or delayed island outing
  • Arrange the daytime car to Luxor

Base: Hurghada

5 Day 5 Travel to Luxor and take one measured East Bank look

Leave after breakfast for the road crossing, allowing around five to six hours door to door as a planning margin. The tourism board describes Luxor as about four hours from Hurghada; resort pickup, a break and city arrival extend that headline estimate. Keep lunch and check-in ahead of any sightseeing commitment. With enough daylight and energy, choose Karnak for the first East Bank visit. Follow the major courts towards the column hall, then look for Hatshepsut's obelisk or the sacred lake rather than attempting the whole precinct. A later arrival suits the more compact Luxor Temple, whose published Ministry hours currently extend to 20:00. Its colonnade and courts belonged to ceremonies linking it with Karnak, so this is a worthwhile alternative rather than a consolation stop. Choose one site, or simply walk by the river if the journey has been tiring. You sleep in Luxor tonight; tomorrow's tomb visit starts here instead of several hours away on the coast.

  • Desert crossing and lunch
  • One East Bank site if time allows

Base: Luxor

6 Day 6 Spend the cool morning among the royal tombs

Head to the West Bank early with a booked vehicle for the Valley of the Kings. The general admission is not access to every special tomb; choose from the chambers open on the day and add a separately priced interior only if it interests you. Look closely at the painted walls rather than rushing through a succession of entrances. A guide can explain unfamiliar religious imagery, while independent visitors can use a short site guide. Allow a generous morning for the valley, including pauses between interiors. Walks in exposed ground and sloping passages can be tiring. If you still want a second monument, continue to Hatshepsut's temple; otherwise return for lunch and shade. Its open terraces are a different kind of visit from the enclosed tombs. Keep the afternoon light, especially in summer. A river view or a quiet meal is enough after the main outing. Return to the same room for the second Luxor night, with no additional hotel move before departure.

  • Valley of the Kings
  • Hatshepsut's terraces if energy remains

Base: Luxor

7 Day 7 Leave from Luxor without hiding a return to the sea

Check out for the onward journey you booked from Luxor. If departure is later, a relaxed breakfast and a short Corniche walk can round off the stay. Leave the length of that outing to your actual flight or train, rather than counting day seven as another full sightseeing day. An airport transfer and a station transfer are separate arrangements; give the driver the correct destination. Travellers with a return flight from Hurghada have a different final day: another desert crossing followed by the airport process. For an early coastal flight, the safer plan is to shorten or reverse the itinerary and sleep near Hurghada before departure, rather than rely on a long same-day road connection. That is a route change, with different nights and costs. Cairo, Aswan and a cruise also need additional time; none is an unlisted stop in these six nights. End the week with the two places you came for instead of chasing one final attraction at the expense of the journey home.

  • Luxor checkout and onward departure
  • Optional short Corniche walk

Car Travel time: Plan 5–6 hours door to door; road estimate about 4 hours

Use a reputable driver and allow for resort pickup, a break and the Luxor arrival. The tourism board gives about four hours for the road link; five to six hours is a planning allowance, not an operator guarantee.

Admission costs and optional service components

Components checked 9 October 2026: EGP admissions are per foreign adult; the Luxor room is for two sharing. Boat prices are advertised in EUR, charged in EGP. These examples do not price the whole holiday: coast rooms, road journeys and flights still need dated quotes.

Karnak or Luxor Temple Choose the arrival-day site you can enjoy. Karnak includes its Open Museum; the Mut precinct costs extra. Visiting both requires both admissions.
EGP 600 or EGP 500 per foreign adult
Valley of the Kings The Ministry lists this general admission. Special tombs and site transport can add charges; it is not a ticket to every chamber.
EGP 750 per foreign adult
Optional Hatshepsut Temple Add this only if you take the second West Bank visit. The general valley ticket does not include the temple, and a guide is another service.
EGP 440 per foreign adult
Luxor room, two nights The published double/twin tariff works out at USD 40 nightly, with breakfast and taxes covered. Availability and the end date of this limited-time offer are unstated.
USD 80 advertised double/twin component
Mahmya programme examples Advertised per adult, paid in EGP including taxes/fees. Full adds a reef trip and equipment; hotel transport is not listed among inclusions.
EUR 38 beach; EUR 60 lunch; EUR 85 full programme
Remaining meals and drinks For seven days, USD 105–175 per person is a spending allocation, not a measured meal-price range. Reduce for included meals; add for alcohol or hotel dining.
Chosen allowance: USD 15–25 per person/day
Hurghada stay and all road journeys Cover four coast nights, both airport rides, the intercity car and the West Bank vehicle with waiting. Board basis and exact hotel address affect the total.

Booking tips

  • Start with transport and accommodation that fit your flights: four nights on the coast and two in Luxor. A coast package may already include airport rides and meals; subtract those from separately quoted services instead of buying them twice. Check the final inclusive price and cancellation terms for each property.
  • For a traveller choosing Karnak and the general valley visit, current admission components add to EGP 1,350. Optional Hatshepsut brings those tickets to EGP 1,790; transport and special tombs remain separate. An excursion that already includes entry changes what you need to buy yourself.
  • Compare island offers by their named beach, meal and reef programme. A cheap landing-only trip and a full snorkelling day buy different services. Weather-cancellation terms matter more here than a small price difference; settle how a cancelled outing is refunded or moved before paying.
  • Keep the vehicle quote separate from guiding. A good driver handles the journey; an Egyptologist helps you understand the sites. If you want both, ask how much time the guide spends with you rather than assuming a transfer includes explanations inside each monument.
  • International and onward flights, visas, insurance, tips and optional diving are outside these components. A solo traveller usually pays the private room and vehicle alone, while admissions remain per person. Retain each currency until using the actual payment exchange rate.

Hurghada and Luxor

Questions before pairing the coast with Luxor

Is an overnight Luxor stay worth more than a day trip?

Yes, if you want time inside the tombs as well as an East Bank temple. A coast excursion has two long road legs in one day; sleeping in Luxor removes the return drive from your sightseeing evening. A day trip can still suit someone unwilling to change hotels. In that case, choose a small programme and expect a transport-heavy day rather than the equivalent of this two-night stay.

Can I use a coach instead of the private transfer?

Possibly, but treat it as a different booking plan. Confirm a scheduled Hurghada–Luxor service for your date, its terminal locations and hotel connections before cancelling the car. This guide does not assume a current departure or foreign-passenger fare. A later coach arrival may remove day-five sightseeing; reserve an extra Luxor night if Karnak is essential and cannot fit your actual arrival or departure.

What if my flights arrive and depart in Hurghada?

Add the return road cost and reconsider the hotel order. A late day-seven flight may permit a daytime return from Luxor, but it needs a substantial buffer agreed with the operator. An early flight is better served by sleeping on the coast beforehand, which changes the published night split. Reverse the itinerary or extend it; do not combine an uncertain desert arrival with a tight airport check-in.

Which Luxor bank is better for these two nights?

The central East Bank is the simplest default: Luxor Temple, the Corniche and town meals are close together, while the road arrival and departure need no hotel ferry. A West Bank guesthouse suits someone who values a quieter setting and prioritises the necropolis. It still needs transport to the tombs, and East Bank visits add a crossing. Choose that alternative deliberately rather than relying on a room described only as near the Nile.

Can non-swimmers and children enjoy the island day?

They can choose beach time rather than the offshore reef session, but boat boarding and supervision remain part of the outing. Do not treat flotation equipment as a substitute for the ability required by the operator. Ask about the actual boat, boarding assistance, child lifejackets and shaded seating. Families who prefer to avoid the crossing can keep the hotel beach day and still follow the rest of the route.

Does this route suit someone with limited mobility?

It needs individual assessment. Hotel beach access, boat boarding, open ground at monuments and sloping tomb passages present different obstacles. Ask providers about the specific route you will use and any assistance, rather than accepting a general accessible label. One temple and a hotel-based coast stay may work better than the island boat plus several interiors. Skip Hatshepsut if its exposed approach would make the day too tiring.

How much archaeology fits after a late Luxor arrival?

Usually one short visit at most. Luxor Temple has a later published closing than the daytime West Bank sites, but reaching the gate is only part of a worthwhile visit. Leave time to eat and settle in first. If you arrive exhausted, keep the evening by the river and make the next morning your main experience. A third Luxor night is the straightforward way to add Karnak without crowding the departure day.

Can I add Cairo and the pyramids to the same week?

Only by making a substantially different itinerary. Cairo adds another long-distance journey and needs time for Giza and its museums; it cannot be an incidental outing during a coast rest day. If the pyramids are your priority, use the Cairo–Luxor–Aswan route or extend this trip with a Cairo stay. Keeping Hurghada here means accepting a focused sea-and-Thebes holiday instead of a national highlights circuit.

What changes if we travel in winter or midsummer?

In winter, long swims and breezy boat returns may feel colder than the sunshine suggests, so bring a layer and choose a property with a comfortable shore or pool alternative. In midsummer, give the Luxor day fewer outdoor stops and a long shaded break. Travellers who struggle with heat should move the inland visit to a cooler season. These are comfort choices; the operator still decides whether a particular boat departure can run.
