This seven-day route gives each a place in the week. Keep two arrival nights in Ponta Delgada, one in Sete Cidades, two in Furnas and one in Ribeira Grande: four bases, three changes of accommodation and six nights. Collect the car at Ponta Delgada Airport on day one and return it there on day seven. The main mountain stop comes during the move east to Furnas, with a booked Caldeira Velha bathing slot and a viewpoint visit to Lagoa do Fogo. A long lake hike would replace that programme. May–June or September suits this mix of sea excursions, town walks and thermal bathing; high viewpoints still depend on visibility. Choose accommodation with an agreed parking arrangement, especially for the two town bases, and keep the first day light enough for your actual flight arrival.
Ponta Delgada’s three-arched city gate introduces the old maritime entrance. The second morning goes offshore with a whale-watching operator; the afternoon returns to the coastal fort and its military museum.
The crater village gives a different view from the rim. Walk beside the lakes after checking in, then use the evening for the village itself instead of driving back to the capital.

North-coast streets and the Gorreana tea visit
Visit Gorreana near Maia before continuing west to Ribeira Grande. The final afternoon stays in town and by the coast; Caldeira Velha has already been visited on day four. This leaves an uncomplicated airport return for the next day.
Arrival and departure are part of these seven days. The six nights are split 2–1–2–1, and the three transfer cards describe changes of base. Road times below are planning allowances before visits, meals and check-in, rather than a claim that the whole week takes only a few hours behind the wheel.
Collect the booked car at João Paulo II Airport and drive to your accommodation in Ponta Delgada. Drop luggage and confirm parking before starting on foot. At Praça de Gonçalo Velho, the Portas da Cidade’s three arches recall the old harbour entrance. The gate dates from 1783; it was dismantled during seafront works in 1948 and reassembled here in 1952. Look for the royal and city arms above the central arch, then continue through the historic streets towards the waterfront. Their dark volcanic stone and pale façades link this town walk to the geology you will see inland. Keep dinner close to your accommodation so a late flight does not turn into a drive across the island. Tonight’s room is also tomorrow’s base.
Overnight: Ponta Delgada
Reserve a morning whale-watching departure from Ponta Delgada harbour and keep the whole morning for check-in, the briefing and time at sea. Futurismo lists its trip as a half-day experience offered in all seasons. Follow the crew’s wildlife interpretation and expect the species seen to depend on the day; a morning booking is a way to leave the afternoon available, not a promise of calm water. Back ashore, have lunch before walking west along the waterfront to Forte de São Brás. Its sixteenth-century bastioned design reflects the islands’ maritime defence, while the military museum covers equipment, uniforms and the Azores’ wartime history. The museum publishes daily hours of 10:00–18:00 and closes on public holidays. If day two is a holiday, put the museum into an early enough arrival afternoon and keep today for the seafront. Sleep in the same Ponta Delgada room.
Overnight: Ponta Delgada
Leave Ponta Delgada for Vista do Rei, allowing roughly 45–60 minutes of driving for the viewpoint approach and descent to Sete Cidades, before time at the stops. From the rim, look across the bridge, village and waters named Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Verde. The Azores Geopark describes a collapse caldera about 5.3 kilometres across, formed around 36,000 years ago; the broad enclosing walls are the day’s defining feature. Descend to the village and leave the car at your accommodation or a permitted parking place. Walk a manageable stretch of lakeshore, pause for lunch and look around the church and village streets. A kayak can be an extra activity if you arrange it locally, but it is outside the core programme and budget. Settle in for dinner here: this night gives the crater floor its own evening.
Overnight: Sete Cidades
Drive from Sete Cidades towards Ribeira Grande and the Caldeira Velha entrance, allowing about an hour before your reserved bathing slot. Book the Full Ticket if you want the thermal pools; the cheaper Visit Ticket excludes bathing. The visit lasts 90 minutes. Pair it with Lagoa do Fogo’s designated viewpoints, reached under the road-access arrangement in force for your dates. During a shuttle restriction, leave the car at the Caldeira Velha gateway, make the bus outing and return to the same car before continuing east along the coast towards Furnas. Allow a separate mountain-viewing block and lunch, then roughly another hour to Furnas. This is a transfer day with two chosen experiences. The southern PR02SMI hike is a different, four-hour outing and is not included. Arrive for the first of two Furnas nights and take a short village walk before dinner.
Overnight: Furnas
Drive to the cooking area beside Lagoa das Furnas in the late morning. The municipality says restaurant pots are lifted between 11:00 and 13:00, after six to seven hours of geothermal cooking. Stay behind the barriers and watch the covered holes being opened when work is taking place; this is separate from the fumaroles in Furnas village. Return to a reserved village lunch for cozido, a substantial stew of meat, sausage and vegetables cooked underground. Leave the afternoon for Terra Nostra, arriving around 14:00 to give the garden and thermal pool useful time before the 16:30 close. Walk among its botanical collections as well as bathing. The park’s own timeline records Thomas Hickling’s property purchase in 1782 and the first recreational tank in 1783; its Ginkgo Avenue dates from the 1930s. After leaving, explore the village streets and public fumarole viewpoints, then return to the same Furnas room.
Overnight: Furnas
Leave Furnas for the north coast and Gorreana near Maia, allowing around 30–40 minutes on the road before the visit. The family business has produced tea since 1883. Its visitor route explains withering, rolling, oxidation, drying and grading: follow those stages to understand how the fresh leaves become the tea sold in the shop. The factory visit is free and needs no advance appointment according to Gorreana’s FAQ. Allow about an hour to an hour and a half as a planning window, with extra time if you want to linger over tea or walk the plantation paths. Continue west towards Ribeira Grande, roughly another 20–30 minutes by road. Drop your bags, have lunch and spend the afternoon around the town centre and seafront. Today’s agricultural and coastal stops give the mountain driving a rest; the final night is in Ribeira Grande.
Overnight: Ribeira Grande
From Ribeira Grande, allow roughly 30–40 minutes of driving to Ponta Delgada Airport in normal conditions. Add the time for refuelling, the supplier’s exact return location, inspection and any shuttle from an off-airport depot. A short road journey does not include those separate steps. Follow your airline’s check-in and boarding deadlines when deciding when to leave the accommodation. If your flight is later, a final town walk can fit after breakfast; keep it within the return plan you have already agreed. The seven-day itinerary ends after the car handover and flight departure. Its six nights ended with the Ribeira Grande stay, so there is no additional overnight on day seven. If you add an airport-area night for an early flight instead, revise the last accommodation and car-return arrangements before booking.
Base: Ribeira Grande
The rental car links all four bases. These cards cover hotel changes; the arrival drive, whale outing, Furnas lake visit and airport return appear in their own days. Each estimate is a road allowance in normal conditions. Add the full visit blocks and any shuttle wait before deciding on a check-in time.

Visit the rim viewpoint before descending into the crater. Move the car from the viewpoint parking to your accommodation or a permitted village space for the lakeshore walk. Time spent looking, walking and eating is additional.
Sete Cidades Furnas
Reach Caldeira Velha from the north. A shuttle outing returns to the same car park before the drive east to Furnas. Add the 90-minute bathing visit, a separate Lagoa do Fogo viewpoint block and lunch to the road estimate.
Furnas Ribeira Grande
Reach the tea estate near Maia first, then continue west to Ribeira Grande. Caldeira Velha is not a midway stop on this coastal leg: its mountain visit belongs to day four. The afternoon can stay in Ribeira Grande after luggage drop.
Allow €1,460–2,596 (≈ US$1,635–2,908) for two adults sharing a room over six nights and seven days in May–June or September. This includes meals, seven calendar days of car hire, fuel, parking, the whale trip, both thermal venues, cooking-area entry, a museum allowance and any required shuttle fares.

Ponta Delgada
The core route uses the viewpoints. The official PR02SMI description starts at Parque Escutista dos Lagos on the southern side, reaches the lake and returns along the same path. It lists 10.2 kilometres and about four hours, at medium difficulty. To walk it, replace the Caldeira Velha and viewpoint programme, arrange the trailhead access and leave the onward Furnas drive for after the walk. Return to the same southern trailhead after your time at the shore. This is a separate excursion from reaching the designated viewpoints on the mountain road.
The published 2026 shuttle window ran from 1 August to 30 September, daily 09:00–20:00. Private visitor cars could not cross between Caldeira Velha and Casa da Água in those hours; tourism operators, taxis and residents were exceptions. Park at the Caldeira Velha gateway, take the shuttle to the viewpoints and return to your car, then follow the north-coast road towards Furnas. A loop takes about an hour before time off the bus. The adult fare was €8 (≈ US$9), paid on board. These describe the 2026 season; use the regional tourism service’s published arrangements for your actual travel dates.
The municipal cooking area is beside Lagoa das Furnas. Restaurants take their pots from there to their dining rooms, so watching the pots being lifted and eating lunch are separate parts of the visit. Furnas village also has fumaroles and hot springs, which can be explored after the garden visit. Keep the lakeside cooking work within the marked visitor area and its barriers. Choose a village restaurant for the reserved lunch so the afternoon can continue on foot to Terra Nostra.
Choose the Full Ticket for the interpretation centre, natural monument and thermal pools. The Visit Ticket covers the monument and centre without bathing. The published adult non-resident prices are €10 (≈ US$11) and €3 (≈ US$3) respectively, and tickets apply to a 90-minute block. Opening is 09:00–20:30 in May–September, 09:00–18:30 in April and October, and 09:00–17:00 in November–March; 1 January and 25 December are closures. Use the actual time on your booking rather than treating the end of the opening day as your own last entry.
The same four-base sequence would need pre-arranged transfers for luggage and the mountain day. A simpler car-free alternative is to stay in Ponta Delgada and book separate excursions to Sete Cidades, Furnas and Lagoa do Fogo, while keeping the harbour whale trip. That is a different accommodation pattern, so the room split and car allowance here would need replacing. A rental car is the practical transport choice for this particular sequence, rather than a claim that every journey on the island requires one.
Add a second Sete Cidades night if crater-level walks and another opportunity for a clear rim view are your priority. An extra Furnas night instead gives the garden, village and lake separate blocks. Both options turn the trip into seven nights and require another room night, meals and any extra charged car period. If your main concern is an early departure, use the added night near Ponta Delgada Airport and return the car at the time agreed with the supplier.
