Dumaguete or Dauin?

City culture, small marine life and inland walks

Dumaguete’s excursions spread in three directions: along the southern dive coast, west into Valencia and north towards the lakes and Bais.

Trip length Three nights for two full outings

A city stay of three nights leaves two full days between arrival and departure. Use them for an Apo Island outing and one inland trip. With two nights, choose one of those days. Several consecutive diving days call for a longer coast stay, separate from a short ferry stop.

Dauin’s marine subjects Muck diving on black sand

Muck diving means searching the seabed for small animals instead of swimming through a broad coral landscape. Bongo’s Dauin sites feature creatures such as frogfish and nudibranchs. A diver interested in close-up marine photography has a different reason to choose this coast from a snorkeller wanting Apo’s reef.

Two inland directions Valencia west, Twin Lakes north

Casaroro and Pulangbato belong to the Valencia roads west of Dumaguete. Balinsasayao and Danao, the Twin Lakes, are reached through the Sibulan side to the north. Pick the waterfall route for a gorge walk, or the lakes for forest, a boat trip and viewpoints; they are separate excursions.

A city walking route Belfry, cathedral and Quezon Park

The old stone belfry, cathedral and Quezon Park form a small cluster inland from the waterfront. Combine them with Rizal Boulevard when you have a few hours in the city. The seafront faces east, so an early walk looks towards the rising sun rather than a sunset over the water.

Dumaguete’s cashew sweets Silvanas from Sans Rival

Silvanas are cashew-meringue sandwiches with buttercream and cookie crumbs. Sans Rival’s name is closely associated with them in Dumaguete, around San Jose Street near the boulevard.

A Valencia Sunday morning Market first, waterfalls later

Valencia’s Sunday market runs from early morning to noon; Atmosphere lists the window as 5am–12pm. It can suit a morning in the town before continuing towards the falls. If you are joining a fixed departure from Dumaguete, use that tour’s pickup arrangements instead of assuming it stops at the market.

StartBooker answer

Should I stay in Dumaguete city or on the Dauin coast?

Choose the streets near Rizal Boulevard for a city stay with meals on foot and an onward ferry. You can visit Apo Island from here on a package that includes the drive south. For several days of diving, stay on the Dauin coast beside the shore sites and use your dive centre’s boats for offshore outings. Silliman’s campus quarter offers another city address near the university, while Valencia puts you inland by the waterfall roads. A resort in Maayong Tubig needs a substantially longer airport or port transfer than a central Dumaguete room.

Airport, ferries and the drive south

Dumaguete’s airport is in Sibulan. The city ferry port, Sibulan’s south-Cebu terminal and the Dauin dive coast are different departure points.

Getting into Dumaguete

Sibulan Airport to the city

Manila flights arrive at DGT, Sibulan Airport; Philippine Airlines sells this direct route. Allow about fifteen to twenty minutes by road to the city port area. Dumaguete Rent a Car advertises airport–hotel transfers starting at ₱700 per vehicle, with an active fuel surcharge requiring a final quote. Reserve with the operator using the hotel address, rather than applying its city tariff to a distant resort.

OceanJet to Siquijor or Bohol

For an October 2026 sailing, OceanJet quotes ₱420 per adult in Tourist class from Dumaguete to Siquijor and ₱1,080 to Tagbilaran. Allow roughly forty to fifty minutes for Siquijor and two hours for Bohol; one dated Tagbilaran option leaves at 1pm and arrives at 3pm. Book the chosen date at oceanjet.net, allowing an hour at the port before departure. Port and excess-luggage charges are separate.

From south Cebu through Sibulan

The overland route from Moalboal continues south towards Bato and Liloan in Santander. Maayo operates the Liloan–Sibulan crossing, separate from its Bato–Tampi service. Allow roughly half an hour on the water, then another road ride into Dumaguete. Use Maayo’s route and departure information and obtain the current passenger fare from the operator for the sailing.

City rides and road outings

Shared downtown pedicabs

For a short ride within the city centre, allow about ₱15 per person in a shared pedicab, the local tricycle. A private vehicle, luggage trip or destination outside the centre needs a separate agreed total. Tell the driver the hotel or landmark, since a shared route may not go straight to the door.

A full Valencia tour with a driver

Negros Oriental Tours lists its Valencia trip from ₱2,800 per person with Dumaguete pickup, a van, guide, lunch and entrances. Casaroro, Pulangbato, hot-spring and steam-vent stops and the Cata-al museum make this a full day; allow around eight to nine hours. Its quoted pickup supplement for Dauin, Bacong or Valencia is ₱1,500 per package. Request the trip through the operator’s Valencia booking page.

A Dauin resort transfer

Atmosphere’s Maayong Tubig property lies about twenty kilometres south of Dumaguete. It advises roughly an hour from the airport and forty-five to sixty minutes from the city pier. Arrange its vehicle with the resort if that is your destination. A shorter drive to Dauin town does not describe every coastal property, so use the actual resort locality when comparing a hired-car quote.

Reserve the specific outing

Harold’s two Apo snorkelling packages

Harold’s basic Apo outing costs ₱1,500 per person from its Dauin dive centre. The ₱2,800 premium trip meets at Harold’s Mansion in Dumaguete at 6:30am, adding the return road transfer, packed lunch and snorkelling guide to the boat, snorkelling gear and admission fees. It lists about six hours. The operator’s boat departs from Dauin, so use its meeting point rather than independently going to Malatapay. Reserve through haroldsdivecenter.com.

An arranged Silliman museum visit

The Anthropology Museum occupies Hibbard Hall’s second floor. Its regular sessions are Monday–Friday, 8:30–11:30am and 2–4:30pm, with ₱100 general admission or ₱40 for students. Arrange the visit through the university information booth. Admission can be restricted when the confirmed group has fewer than ten people; a solo visitor or couple needs a confirmed group arrangement, not a walk-in assumption.

A separate Twin Lakes day

Negros Oriental Tours offers Balinsasayao and Danao from ₱2,599 per person, including the drive, guide, meal, lake boat and entrances. Its Dumaguete or Sibulan pickup goes north, with roughly forty-five to sixty minutes on the road and about seven to eight hours for the whole outing.

Room access and the nature outings

The falls and the museum have stairs

The Casaroro trail descends roughly three hundred steps; you climb those steps again on the way out. It also crosses uneven river ground. The Anthropology Museum is on Hibbard Hall’s second floor, so ask the university about access assistance before reserving. Apo outings require boarding a small boat. Explain the specific help needed for that boarding and the water activity; a city hotel’s lift does not settle access at the excursion.

Local seasons and worked activity costs

Allow for the Apo and Valencia bookings, the room bill and meals outside the included tour lunches.

Dumaguete’s local climate

February–April: the drier stretch
  • Dumaguete’s station records show lower rainfall in February, March and April, with April the driest month. This is a useful planning window for a stay mixing coast and inland outings. December is considerably wetter than April.

  • October’s higher rainfall

October is the wettest month in the local long-term record. Boat operations and the Casaroro river route still depend on the conditions on the day. Put an Apo outing early in a short stay so another full day can take its place if the operator postpones it. Separately booked onward flights need room for a disrupted sea crossing.

  • May’s daytime heat

May’s average daily maximum is around 32°C at the Dumaguete station. On a city day, do the boulevard and belfry walk earlier, with the arranged afternoon museum session for time indoors.

Calculate for the people joining

Two guests taking the sea and waterfall days
  • Two Harold premium Apo seats cost ₱5,600. The named Valencia tour starts from another ₱5,600 for two, making a starting activity budget of ₱11,200. Both tours include transport, lunch and their entry fees. Rooms, airport transfers, other meals, flights and optional purchases are additional.

  • Two divers, two shore dives each on one day

At Bongo, two divers taking two Dauin dives each pay ₱7,000 at the listed ₱1,750 per dive, including equipment and the standard marine fee. Dauin Diving Center’s ₱1,700 dives plus ₱700 equipment hire per day give a dive-and-gear subtotal of ₱8,200 when both dives occur on the same rental day. Its equipment set excludes a computer and torch. Confirm the selected sites and marine charges with that centre.

  • The longer Bais and Manjuyod outing

Negros Oriental Tours’ dolphin-watching and Manjuyod trip starts at ₱3,000 per person, or from ₱6,000 for two. It lists the city van, private boat, guide, onboard lunch and entrances. Water sports and snorkel equipment cost extra. Allow around ten to twelve hours, including the roughly one-and-a-half-to-two-hour road journey each way to Bais. The sandbar emerges at low tide; dolphins may not appear.

What do Silliman museum holiday visits cost?

A specially arranged holiday visit is listed at ₱200 for a general visitor or ₱100 for a student. Request that visit through the university; the holiday fee does not turn a closed date into an automatic public opening.

Does Bongo charge for a camera on a daytime shore dive?

For daytime Dauin shore dives, Bongo lists an additional ₱50 marine charge per dive for bringing a camera. That is separate from the standard sanctuary fee included in its listed daytime dive price.

Can I rent a dive computer at Bongo?

Bongo lists dive-computer hire at ₱500 per day. One rental day covers both dives.

What luggage is included in OceanJet Tourist class?

OceanJet’s Tourist allowance is one hand-carried piece weighing no more than ten kilograms, with maximum dimensions of 25×35×40 centimetres. A larger suitcase or additional piece is outside that allowance; obtain its luggage charge at the port.

What ID should I bring for the ferry?

OceanJet requires valid identification with a name matching the ticket exactly. Its tickets are not transferable to someone else. Use the traveller’s correct name when booking, then bring that identification for check-in.
