What belongs in a Puerto Princesa stay?

The city has its own food, waterfront and wartime history. Its two principal boat excursions head in different directions: west to Sabang’s cave and north-east to Honda Bay’s islands.

How many nights? Three for two full outings

With three nights, put the river on one complete day and Honda Bay on another. Two nights leave just one full sightseeing day, so choose between those trips. A single night after a late flight is chiefly a road-connection stop; it does not create a spare excursion morning before an early van north.

What is the cave like? Limestone chambers beneath the mountain

The river passes through a limestone landscape and emerges directly into the sea. The lower stretch is influenced by tides. Your paddleboat follows the visitor section with an audio guide; the eight-kilometre river length describes the larger natural system, not the ordinary visitor paddle.

What can I see in town? Cathedral, Mendoza Park and the wartime memorial

The present Immaculate Conception Cathedral dates from 1961. Mendoza Park’s acacias shade a memorial to the doctor killed during the war; Plaza Cuartel commemorates the wartime prisoners. Check current access to the memorial grounds.

What should I eat? Chao long noodle soup

Vietnamese refugees brought their cooking traditions to Palawan after 1975, and the city’s chao long developed from that exchange. Look for this noodle soup when choosing a town meal.

What happens after dark? An evening paddle to see fireflies

Iwahig and Sicsican are different firefly outings. The Iwahig route uses a river paddleboat, while the Sicsican itinerary starts at the Baywalk, takes a motorboat and then changes to a smaller riverboat. Match the river and departure point to your booking; the names do not describe one interchangeable trip.

Is Tubbataha nearby? A separate offshore diving trip

Licensed liveaboards take visitors to Tubbataha on an offshore voyage. The management office authorises these vessels but does not operate commercial tours. Use its vessel list to find an organiser, then choose the specific departure and itinerary you want.

Should I stay in Puerto Princesa town or Sabang for the Underground River?

Stay in town for a short visit combining the Underground River with Honda Bay, local food and an onward van to El Nido. Choose Sabang for a beach stay beside the village where cave boats depart; reaching it involves a substantial road transfer from the airport. A city-based river excursion occupies a full day, although the cave paddle itself is much shorter. Sabang accommodation gives you more shore time, but you still need park admission and must join the wharf’s visitor queue.

Plan your Puerto Princesa days

Plan around your landing time, the cave date and your next road journey. Include whether you want a Sabang beach room or a city hotel.

Four bases within Puerto Princesa’s wide city boundary

Downtown, Santa Lourdes, Sabang and Nagtabon are separate lodging choices, spread across the city’s large boundary. East-coast island boats and west-coast beaches require different roads. Pick the shore or city services you want to have outside the hotel, then price the journeys between them.

Getting to Puerto Princesa and onward

PPS is the city airport. The short ride to downtown, the westward journey to Sabang and the long northbound run to El Nido are three different transfers, with different units and prices.

Flying in

PPS airport to downtown

Allow roughly fifteen to twenty-five minutes for the airport-to-centre journey. A tricycle estimate is about ₱150 per vehicle for up to three passengers; luggage can make that a tight fit. This is an editorial planning price, so agree the whole vehicle fare.

From the airport towards El Nido

HTT advertises shared PPS–El Nido seats at ₱800 per person. The drive takes around five to six hours before departure waiting and any onward ride from the terminal. Supply the flight time when reserving an airport meeting. A flight into PPS still leaves this substantial road journey; luggage collection and the departure wait come before the drive.

Getting around

Short city rides

For a half-day city sightseeing charter, budget roughly ₱1,200 per tricycle, then agree the stops and waiting time. A short shared seat and a vehicle reserved for your party are priced differently. Give the exact destination for an ordinary town journey; the driver needs to know whether you want one ride or a longer hire.

Private road travel to Sabang

SeaQuest publishes a ₱6,000 one-way vehicle transfer between Puerto Princesa and Sabang. Daluyon quotes about an hour and a half for its own city-to-resort journey; allow longer for your pickup address and stops. A road transfer buys transport, not the cave permit, meals or boat tickets. Obtain a vehicle and luggage quote for the actual party.

Santa Lourdes and Honda Bay

Shared Honda outings use Santa Lourdes wharf. Paradise’s programme collects city-proper guests between 7am and 7:30am and allows around forty to forty-five minutes on the road. Its usual island list includes Starfish, Luli and Cowrie, but weather can change landings. A guest staying near the coast should arrange a meeting point instead of expecting a downtown collection automatically.

Permits and fees

Park registration before the sea crossing

The park’s Mendoza office operates from 7am to 4pm. Arrange your visitor entry permit before travelling to Sabang, then present the permit, fee receipts and identification at the wharf counter. The coastal boat departures run from 8am to 3pm. The current procedure also gives overnight Sabang visitors a designated counter; establish that arrangement with the park or your organiser.

What Alvea’s river package includes

The ₱2,700 adult package contains return van and motorboat travel, a licensed guide, the park permit and admission, the audio guide, parking and a buffet lunch. Add the ₱150 city environmental fee when it is due. The separate public gate, audio and coastal-boat tariffs are already represented in this package, so adding them again would overstate your bill.

The selected Honda Bay package

Alvea charges ₱2,400 per person for return van and motorboat transport, a guide, entry at its three islands, a picnic lunch and parking. Its page excludes the ₱150 city environmental fee and does not list snorkel equipment. Arrange any gear hire separately from the confirmed package inclusions.

Puerto Princesa with limited mobility

The cave visit has two boat transfers

From Sabang, the coastal boat journey takes about twenty to thirty minutes, followed by the smaller paddleboat used inside the cave. Reaching and changing boats can involve sand and uneven ground. Describe the assistance you need when arranging the visit, and obtain an explanation of the actual boarding method. A private vehicle does not resolve the physical transfer between these two boats.

Seasons, costs and common slip-ups

The boat-day and evening examples cover two adults. The El Nido road comparison covers eight passengers. Room rates and flights remain separate.

When to go

January to April is the drier window
  • Puerto Princesa’s 1991–2020 climate normals show considerably less rainfall from January through April than in May or December. February averages about 31 millimetres, compared with roughly 126 in May. These are historical local figures, useful for choosing dates; they do not establish the sea conditions on a particular cave or island outing.

  • Boat conditions can still cancel a cave visit

The park can suspend departures because of the sea crossing, weather or the river conditions. Even when the cave itself is sheltered, boats have to reach its entrance from Sabang. Avoid planning a replacement visit on a day already committed to an onward van or flight; that leaves little room to change the excursion date.

  • Tubbataha uses a narrower sailing season

Philippine Siren describes its Tubbataha season as March to June. Choose from the vessel’s dated departures, and arrange flights around the particular sailing.

Puerto Princesa costs

Two adults: river, islands and city arrival
  • Alvea’s river day costs ₱5,700 for two adults including their first city eco-fees. Its Honda Bay package adds ₱4,800 when both show the still-valid city receipts. Add an estimated ₱150 airport-to-centre tricycle, bringing this example to ₱10,650. Both days include lunch for each traveller; rooms, flights, other meals, extra gear, additional local rides and any booking charges are excluded.

  • Add an evening or choose it instead

Alvea’s firefly package is ₱1,600 per person, so two adults add ₱3,200 for return road travel, the paddleboat, a guide and dinner. Adding it to the preceding example brings the selected activities and arrival ride to ₱13,850. It can also be the main organised outing for an evening in town without buying another full boat day.

  • Eight travellers on the road north

Eight HTT shared seats cost ₱6,400, while the published private van is ₱7,000 for up to eight guests plus luggage. The private option therefore adds ₱600 for the party, or ₱75 each, before any difference in meeting or final hotel transport.

Can I reuse the city environmental-fee receipt on Honda Bay?

Yes, within its ten-day validity in Puerto Princesa. Keep each traveller’s original ₱150 receipt for the second city excursion. It is non-transferable. The same receipt does not pay the separate environmental fees in El Nido or Coron.

Does a small child get a completely free river tour?

The coastal-boat card exempts children aged five and below from that seat charge. This is not a free full-package rule. The park lists a ₱100 minor admission without defining the age boundary on its card; ask the organiser for the child’s complete package price.

How does Paradise’s river-tour deposit work?

Its ₱2,800 adult river package requires a thirty-percent deposit: ₱840, leaving ₱1,960 payable in cash at pickup. The ₱150 environmental fee is separate when due. These are Paradise’s terms, and do not establish Alvea’s payment terms.

What is refunded when weather closes the park?

The park describes a government procedure for refunding the visitor entry permit when an official cancellation applies. That does not establish a refund of an entire organiser’s package, hotel or road transfer. Obtain the organiser’s cancellation terms separately before paying for those services.

Can a non-diving companion swim from Philippine Siren at Tubbataha?

The operator says non-divers cannot snorkel or swim on that Tubbataha itinerary, and there are no islet landings. It is therefore a poor choice for a companion expecting a beach-and-swimming holiday alongside the diving.

How long should I wait to fly after a liveaboard?

For divers without symptoms, DAN recommends at least eighteen hours after multiple no-decompression dives, including on consecutive days, and twelve after a single no-decompression dive. Dives requiring decompression stops call for a substantially longer wait before flying. Count from surfacing on the last dive to the flight.
