Manila, Makati or Newport?

Six details that shape a Manila stay

The old-city sights lie west of the business districts. Makati, Taguig’s BGC and Pasay’s Newport each offer a different focus for the stay.

Choose the stay length Two nights give one full day

An arrival evening and a departure morning leave little sightseeing time. With two hotel nights, you can give the intervening day to either the old city or the eastern business districts. Three nights allow both, without changing hotels between outings.

Several cities make up Metro Manila Manila, Makati, Taguig and Pasay

Intramuros, Ermita, Malate and Binondo are within the City of Manila. Makati is a separate city; BGC is in Taguig, and Newport is in Pasay. Put the city and street on a booking or pickup request, especially when a property advertises itself broadly as a Manila hotel.

Fort Santiago beyond the morning Grounds open until 10pm

The fort’s weekday opening is 8am, with a 6am start at weekends. Its grounds remain open until 10pm, but regular last admission is 8pm on weekdays and 8:30pm at weekends. This gives a history visit an evening option; it does not make the other Intramuros museums late-opening attractions.

A Binondo food route Ongpin, Benavidez and Carvajal

Start with a fried pork siopao, a filled bun, on Ongpin. Benavidez has Wai Ying’s dim sum and Masuki’s mami noodle soup; Carvajal adds Quik Snack’s Hokkien cooking. These are nearby streets with different stops, so choose a few dishes to share instead of ordering a full meal at every restaurant.

BGC’s outdoor spaces High Street, parks and public art

Bonifacio High Street’s pedestrian shopping strip sits among the estate’s parks and public artworks.

Arrival registration Free eTravel, within 72 hours

Foreign tourists arriving in the Philippines register at etravel.gov.ph within seventy-two hours before arrival and save the QR code. The government form is free. Departing foreign tourists do not generally need the departure registration required of Filipino passengers.

Where should I stay for a short Manila visit?

Choose Makati for a stay that mixes restaurants, shopping and a museum visit, or Intramuros and Ermita when the old city is your main reason to stop. Poblacion suits evenings spent in bars; BGC offers a different day around High Street and the science museum. If your stay is mainly a night before a Terminal 3 flight, Newport has hotels across the pedestrian bridge. These places belong to several cities within Metro Manila. Two nights leave a full sightseeing day; an overnight connection needs its own airport-based plan.

Getting in, out and around Manila

NAIA’s terminals use separate landside entrances. Choose the transfer for the arrival terminal and hotel address, then arrange any connection to another airport.

NAIA and Clark

Terminal information and the airport shuttle

Cebu Pacific’s 5J flights use Terminal 3 at NAIA. PAL uses Terminal 2 for domestic flights and Terminal 1 internationally; Philippines AirAsia has the same domestic–international split. Follow the terminal on your booking. For a connection, ask the airline whether you must collect bags or use its transfer desk. NAIA’s free public inter-terminal shuttle follows a road loop scheduled about every fifteen minutes. The wait and drive are additional to any arrival formalities, check-in and security.

A prebooked ride into Makati

Manila Airport Transfer advertises a sedan from ₱1,700 per vehicle for up to two passengers with luggage, including fuel and tolls. It gives roughly thirty to sixty minutes from NAIA to Makati. Obtain the quote for the exact hotel and date through its booking page. App rides have their own price at the time of request. At Terminal 3, the official ride-hailing hub is in the multi-level parking area; Terminals 1 and 2 have arrival transport booths.

The road journey to Clark

Arrive Pampanga’s Manila-to-Clark van starts at ₱6,500 for the whole vehicle, one way, from NAIA, Makati or BGC. Fuel, tolls, parking and the driver are included. Allow around two to three hours on the road, with longer journeys in busy periods, then add the airline’s airport arrival time. Reserve using the pickup terminal or hotel and flight number. A night near Clark can move this road journey to the previous day.

Getting around

LRT-1 for the old-city corridor

LRT-1 follows the Taft Avenue corridor through old Manila and continues south to Dr. Santos. A single-journey ticket from United Nations to Carriedo costs ₱20 per adult; United Nations to PITX is ₱30. Buy for the named destination at the station, since stored-value fares differ. This can link the museum side of the city with a Chinatown approach, with street walks at either end.

Cars between districts and back to NAIA

For a fixed restaurant or hotel address, enter the entrance pin in the ride app before comparing the quote. Grab’s published ₱300–500 and roughly forty-minute example is a city-centre journey to NAIA. Airport demand and the precise pickup can change the quoted amount; use the app’s current fare for the actual trip.

A flexible Pasig River outing

For an old-city outing from Makati, ask at Guadalupe about the current ferry sailing towards Escolta, beside Binondo. MMDA rides are free. Check the day’s station notice before committing to the journey, with time to wait for the boat.

Tickets and paperwork

Fort Santiago and the National Museum

Fort Santiago charges ₱75 regular admission or ₱50 for eligible students, seniors and persons with disabilities. The National Museum’s Fine Arts, Anthropology and Natural History buildings admit visitors free, with identification for walk-ins. The central complex lists daily 9am–6pm visiting hours. These are separate buildings: choose the galleries that interest you and allow their bag checks and walking time when fixing the day.

An Ayala Museum booking

For an October 2026 date, Ayala Museum’s all-floor ticket costs ₱850 for a foreign visitor or ₱500 for a Filipino citizen residing in the Philippines, with local government identification. Children aged twelve and below have a ₱350 ticket with valid identification. The booking is tied to a dated entry slot; choose that slot through the museum’s ticket page before planning the Makati outing. Its entrance is at Makati Avenue and De la Rosa, beside Greenbelt Park.

The Mind Museum ticket options

A three-hour ticket costs ₱625 for an adult or ₱550 for a taller child; children three feet and below enter free. The all-day ticket is ₱750 for a paying adult or child. Special and travelling exhibitions are outside these standard tickets, so check the chosen exhibition before paying. Use the museum’s visit page for the session and ticket, with the Rizal Drive and 30th Street drop-off when arriving by car.

Getting around with reduced mobility

Ask about the specific museum and entrance

The National Museum offers wheelchairs, but access to some galleries is restricted; describe the planned building and assistance needed when contacting it. For hotels, ask about the path from the street or drop-off to reception, as well as the lift to the room.

Heat, rain and rush hour

Allow for paid museum visits and road transfers alongside the hotel bill.

When to go

January–April: lower rainfall
  • Manila’s Port Area station records relatively little rain from January through April, with monthly averages around twenty millimetres in its long-term normals. This is a useful window for an outdoor history day. December and May receive considerably more rain.

  • July and August: wetter city days

Rainfall rises substantially by July and reaches its monthly peak in August at the Port Area station. Heavy rain can disrupt roads and flights. Put an indoor museum visit in a flexible part of the plan, and allow extra road time on a day with a weather warning. Check the current forecast for the actual travel date; the station figures are historical averages.

  • April’s heat

The average daily maximum reaches roughly 34°C in April, compared with around 30°C in January. Put the exposed Intramuros walk earlier in the day, followed by a walk-in National Museum visit during the hotter hours.

Where a Manila stay gets expensive

Two adults visiting historic Manila and Ayala Museum
  • Two regular Fort Santiago admissions cost ₱150. Two foreign all-floor Ayala tickets add ₱1,700, making ₱1,850 for those paid visits; National Museum admission adds nothing. This can cover different sightseeing days in the west and east of the metropolis. It excludes travel between them, food, rooms and any additional church museum or exhibition tickets.

  • Two adults and a child at The Mind Museum

For a child above the free-height threshold, two adult three-hour tickets and one child ticket total ₱1,800. Three all-day tickets cost ₱2,250, an extra ₱450 for the longer visit. Transport, meals and special exhibitions are additional.

  • Sharing the Clark transfer

At the van’s ₱6,500 starting quote, two travellers share an equivalent ₱3,250 each; four share ₱1,625 each. Obtain the final party quote with luggage and pickup details. Flights, hotel nights and other journeys are outside this road-transfer amount.

Can a large group walk into the National Museum?

Groups of twenty or more must reserve at least three working days ahead. Group visits are scheduled Tuesday–Saturday; Mondays, Sundays and holidays are for walk-in visitors. Use the central-complex reservation page for the chosen building and date.

Can I take luggage into The Mind Museum?

The Mind Museum has no baggage-storage facility. Arrange to leave suitcases with your accommodation before the booked session, particularly on checkout day.

Can I arrange a Terminal 3 ride without the app?

NAIA’s Terminal 3 transport hub has booking lounges where passengers can arrange a ride on the spot without using their own app. Follow the signs to the multi-level parking hub and use the accredited service there.

What should I check before a Mall of Asia Arena event?

The Arena limits ordinary bags to twelve by twelve inches and does not permit re-entry after leaving. Age rules depend on the event. Check its specific ticket conditions and arrange wheelchair seating with the venue where needed.

Does the private Makati transfer take cash?

Manila Airport Transfer allows cash airport pickups with a ₱2,000 card authorisation as a security hold. The hold is distinct from the quoted ride fare. Its other payment choices include card, bank transfer, PayPal and GCash; choose the terms during booking.
