Bophut, Chaweng and Lamai offer three different ways to spend a first stay on Koh Samui. Bophut puts Fisherman’s Village restaurants and seafront evenings nearby. Chaweng has the largest concentration of shops, clubs and busy beach life. Lamai offers a smaller town beside a long bay. Bophut is a good starting point when you want to choose a different restaurant each evening and walk along the village waterfront. Book near Fisherman’s Village for that experience: a hotel elsewhere in the Bophut subdistrict may need a drive to reach it. Choose Chaweng instead if clubs and late beach bars are a priority.
The east has the busiest beach towns, the north combines long beaches with village restaurants, and the west has quieter resort settings. In the northeast, Choeng Mon has one compact bay, while Plai Laem properties occupy separate coves or hillsides.
Village restaurants and seafront evenings
The streets around Fisherman’s Village bring restaurants, small shops and the Bophut waterfront together. Stay nearby for evenings on foot and a sociable atmosphere without Chaweng’s concentration of clubs. Properties farther along the north coast offer a different setting from the village lanes.
Nightlife, shopping and a busy beach town
Chaweng has Samui’s broadest mix of clubs, beach bars, restaurants and shopping beside its main eastern beach. Choose the centre for late nights and shops on foot. The northern end and southern coves offer different surroundings, so compare the actual beachfront and room position.
A smaller town beside a long bay
Lamai has restaurants, bars and shops around a smaller centre than Chaweng. Its southeastern position is convenient for Hin Ta and Hin Yai and a road trip inland to Na Muang. A room near the centre gives a different evening walk from a property at either end of the bay.
Long beach days and a quieter northern stay
Mae Nam’s long north-coast beach has bungalows, villas and lower-key dining, with views across the Gulf toward Koh Phangan. It suits an extended stay or days based near the room. The main road and hillside villas sit behind the beach; a Mae Nam address does not necessarily mean direct access to the sand.
A compact bay or a northeastern peninsula resort
Choeng Mon is the beach choice: a compact bay with resorts and restaurants nearby. Plai Laem is the wider peninsula around the temples, with villas and hotels on separate coves or hillsides. Choose the actual bay and beach access at a Plai Laem property rather than expecting the same layout as Choeng Mon.
Western beach and pool days
Lipa Noi offers a quieter western beach setting away from the main eastern resort towns. The municipality describes shallow water that recedes at low tide, so it suits a mix of shore and pool time. Dining is more spread out than in Fisherman’s Village or central Lamai.
A secluded southwestern resort stay
Taling Ngam suits a holiday built around the hotel, coastal views and occasional road outings. Hillside resorts can place rooms, restaurants, pools and the beach on different levels. Choose it for time at the property rather than nightly visits to Chaweng or the northern village restaurants.
A short stay around a western ferry connection
Nathon is a western town for ferry arrivals, local shops and practical errands. It suits a short connection stop more than a holiday spent on a resort beach. Seatran’s Don Sak service uses Nathon; other Samui boats may use northern or northeastern piers.

Samui’s temples, granite landscapes and coconut products give the island more variety than a circuit of beaches. Choose the outings that interest you; there is no need to fit all six into a short stay.
Walk the waterfront streets for small shops, a seafood dinner and a drink beside Bophut Beach. The attraction is being able to choose among independent places in one village. Stay nearby to return on foot, or visit for an evening from another coast; reserve Chaweng for a night focused on clubs.
Phra Yai’s large golden Buddha stands on Fan islet, joined to Samui by a causeway in the northeast. Stairs lead to the terrace, with views across the sea toward Koh Phangan. Visit for both the religious landmark and its island setting; the upper terrace requires a stair climb.
Wat Plai Laem is a separate temple complex from Big Buddha. Its waterside setting includes a many-armed Guanyin, a large smiling Budai figure and a Buddha footprint. Visit both northeastern sites if the different religious images interest you; seeing one does not mean you have visited the other.
Na Muang brings inland greenery and water running between granite rocks into a coastal holiday. TAT records King Rama IX’s initials on a large rock nearby. Rainfall affects the flow and the paths, so choose the visit for the landscape and royal marking rather than relying on a swim in the pool.
South of Lamai, the Grandfather and Grandmother Rocks are natural coastal formations with recognisable shapes. Nearby stalls sell Samui’s coconut caramel, a specific local sweet to try or take home. Coconut oil and soap are other island souvenirs; combine the rock stop with time in Lamai rather than treating it as a whole-day excursion.
Mu Ko Ang Thong Marine National Park is an offshore outing, separate from sightseeing around Samui by road. Reserve a day for the boat journey and the islands; compare whether the trip includes kayaking, park fees and hotel pickup. The official 2026 closure dates and sea-weather limits are explained below.
A flight to Samui Airport ends on the island; a flight to mainland Surat Thani still needs a road transfer and ferry. For island-hopping, the operator’s named Samui pier determines the road journey to your hotel.
Bangkok Airways flies directly from Bangkok Suvarnabhumi to Samui in about 1 hour 10–20 minutes. From Samui Airport, Chaweng is roughly 10–15 minutes by road depending on traffic; Bophut, Choeng Mon and other coasts need their own taxi or minivan transfer. The airport has no rail or public-bus connection.
A mainland arrival is a different journey: travel by road to Don Sak, cross to Samui, then continue to the hotel. Seatran describes about 1½ hours for its Don Sak–Samui crossing, arriving at Nathon on the west coast. A combined ticket may cover the mainland road and boat; read its final endpoint before adding the island hotel ride.
Bophut’s village lanes and central Chaweng or Lamai suit local meals and shops on foot. Trips between them need road transport: use a taxi, hotel car, shared songthaew where available or a driver for an outing. For several distant sights, one circuit is more practical than repeated returns across the island.
Lomprayah’s Gulf services use named Samui landing points, including Pralarn in Mae Nam and Bangrak in the northeast. Use the pier on the selected sailing for the hotel pickup. Staying near a northern beach does not put you beside every ferry, and changing boat operators can change the road transfer.
InterContinental at Taling Ngam lists a paid scheduled shuttle to Chaweng or Nathon and no airport shuttle. This can support an occasional town visit from the southwest, but it is not a general island bus or an airport transfer. Its concierge confirms the current departures and return.
For a direct Samui flight, compare the airfare plus the airport–hotel car. For a Surat Thani arrival, add the mainland road segment, ferry and Samui hotel ride. A boat-only ticket and a bus-and-ferry ticket cover different journeys; the road allowances in the budget below assume arrival at Samui Airport.
A hotel on the sand may be easier to use than a villa above the coast, but inspect the actual route between room, breakfast, pool and beach. Ask for step-free access and a suitable transfer vehicle when needed. If arriving by ferry, establish boarding assistance; Seatran requires passengers to leave the vehicle deck during the crossing.
For a beach holiday, choose dates using Samui’s Gulf climate rather than Phuket’s seasonal calendar. The budget below assumes a modest Bophut room, local meals and one road outing, with offshore activities added separately.
TMD’s Samui climate normals show relatively low rain in February to April. July and August are useful summer alternatives, with lower average rainfall than October to December. November is the wettest average month. These are long-term patterns; the current shipping forecast determines whether a particular boat outing is suitable.
The official 2026 calendar lists Mu Ko Ang Thong Marine National Park closed from 1 November to 15 December. For a trip during that period, plan Samui’s beaches and inland sights instead. Later park notices and the operator’s actual departure determine access outside the scheduled closure; the 2026 dates do not establish the calendar for 2027.

These are transport allowances for the pair, not published flat fares; a distant western hotel or private all-day driver changes the cost.
