Two nights give Chiang Rai an arrival afternoon and a complete art day. The White Temple lies south of the centre and Baan Dam north, so a driver connects them. Finishing here also avoids the same-day return drive that makes a Chiang Mai-based excursion much longer.
The hero photograph shows Mae Fah Luang Garden on Doi Tung. If gardens and the Royal Villa interest you more than contemporary art, use day five for that northern outing instead. The garden, Royal Villa and Hall of Inspiration form a different programme, with a separate transport and ticket total.

For two nights, choose the Clock Tower–Jedyod Road–Bus Terminal 1 area, where the coach arrival and ordinary dinners are close together. Le Patta’s Phaholyothin Road address illustrates the central setting. A Kok River resort suits time at the property but adds rides for the town evenings.

Take a transfer from Chiang Mai Airport to your hotel around Wat Phra Singh. The airport’s official taxi service is in the public first-floor area. Give the driver the building address, as the Old City contains several different neighbourhoods. Use the remaining afternoon for Samlan Road and the lanes around the temple, then have dinner in the western Old City. The walk can be short if you arrive late. This example starts on Tuesday; if the Sunday Walking Street matters to you, shift the Chiang Mai nights to include that evening.

Begin at Wat Phra Singh and look for Wihan Lai Kham. Its murals illustrate the Sang Thong and Suwan Hong stories alongside scenes of Chiang Mai life and customs. The temple’s raised scripture library has a different purpose: preserving Buddhist texts. Continue through the Old City to Wat Chedi Luang for the scale of its brick chedi and surrounding halls. For lunch, order khao soi: egg noodles in coconut curry broth, finished with crisp fried noodles, shallots and pickled vegetables. Chicken and beef versions are common; the combination of soft noodles and crunchy topping is part of the appeal. Spend the afternoon in the lanes between the temples or return to the room. Cover shoulders and knees for the temple visits and remove shoes at the halls where requested.

Arrange a return car to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, including waiting and the drop-off back in the city. TAT describes about forty minutes by road from central Chiang Mai; the winding approach and hotel location affect the actual trip. At the temple, the naga-lined staircase has 306 steps. A paid cable car offers another approach; confirm its operation if your visit depends on it. The roughly 22-metre gilded chedi is a revered relic shrine. Leave space for worshippers around it, then visit the terrace if conditions allow a view. A light layer is useful for the cooler mountain morning. After returning, spend the afternoon in Nimman for cafés and dinner if you want a change from the Old City. This district is outside the moat, so include the ride home. Those preferring a shorter day can eat near their room instead.

Use Friday 11 December for the northbound GreenBus journey. Choose a morning service from Arcade Terminal 3 to Chiang Rai Terminal 1, with three to four hours on the coach and separate rides at each end. The Connections section gives the published timetable reference and booking window. Aim to reach Arcade about forty-five minutes early unless the ticket asks for longer. After arrival, go to the central Chiang Rai room and explore the Clock Tower–Jedyod Road area. Have lunch in town and return to this area for dinner. Confirm tomorrow’s driver pickup at the hotel, with the White Temple first and Baan Dam after lunch. Both places lie outside the central walking area.

Start at Wat Rong Khun, about fourteen kilometres south of town. Artist Chalermchai Kositpipat designed the White Temple around Buddhist and mythological themes, using an intensely white exterior and sculptural detail. TAT lists admission at THB200 (≈ US$6) per foreign adult, checked on 27 October 2026. Allow time for the compound as well as its best-known façade, and follow the current dress and photography signs. After lunch, cross the city to Baan Dam at Nang Lae. Thawan Duchanee’s works and collections occupy dark buildings in northern architectural styles; local craft objects and the buildings themselves are part of the visit. Allow time for the grounds as well as the artworks inside. A Blue Temple stop can replace some remaining free time if you want it; Doi Tung belongs to the alternative full-day plan described below.

Leave from Chiang Rai Airport or your confirmed onward coach terminal. A morning departure uses the time for breakfast and checkout; a later one can leave room for a nearby city walk. Keep that walk in the centre so you can return to the hotel for your luggage. For the airport, agree a pickup price with the hotel and follow your airline’s check-in instructions. The airport’s published taxi information concerns service from its own counter. For an onward coach, check the terminal on the new ticket. A flight from Chiang Mai requires a return road journey and an appropriate final overnight; revise the calendar before booking it.
