Bangkok begins beside the river
Three nights allow one focused palace-and-temple morning, one cross-river perspective and a separate Chinatown evening without repeated journeys through peak traffic.
A first Thailand route with three distinct chapters and no disposable one-night stop.
The route moves from river-city density to Lanna culture and finishes on one Andaman coast, so each flight buys a genuinely different chapter. All three bases receive three nights. Bangkok absorbs the long-haul landing, Chiang Mai keeps its mountain option separate from arrival, and Phuket holds both beach time and the final airport road.
This is written for first-time visitors who want temples, food, a northern city and beach time without collecting airports every other day. It is a poor match for travellers with only seven days, anyone determined to visit several southern islands, or visitors who prefer one region in depth. Two flights consume more than their airborne minutes, so both moving dates stop at neighbourhood-scale exploration.
Aim initially for Nov–Feb for the broadest overlap. Late dry-season smoke can weaken Chiang Mai, while Andaman red flags must overrule a fixed swimming plan. Book the Chiang Mai–Phuket flight and final beach hotel before adding tours. If the calendar grows, add it to Phuket for a sea-weather buffer or Bangkok for a gentler long-haul arrival.
Three nights allow one focused palace-and-temple morning, one cross-river perspective and a separate Chinatown evening without repeated journeys through peak traffic.
The northern stay separates an Old City walk from Doi Suthep and leaves another period for a cooking session, craft district or visibility-dependent mountain excursion.
The island allocation supports a proper beach day and a distinct Old Town or Phang Nga choice, with the final hours reserved for the correct airport road.

Give each of the three bases an equal three-night stay, using domestic flights for both long jumps. Bangkok supplies river history and evening food streets; Chiang Mai adds Lanna temples and one mountain or craft day; Phuket finishes with a chosen coast and an airport buffer. Reserve the direct northern-to-island flight before the rooms around it, and keep the sea outing movable.
The night split serves three climates and three deliberate bases; Phuket retains the closing delay margin.

Rattanakosin monuments, public Chao Phraya boats and Yaowarat after dark
Three Bangkok nights absorb the international arrival and still produce two complete city days. Base near an MRT station, a useful river pier or the Old Town sights selected for the first morning; a generic “central Bangkok” label is not precise enough. Group the Grand Palace and Wat Pho with the river, then give Yaowarat its own evening instead of commuting between distant districts. A later rail-linked museum or contemporary neighbourhood can fill the other clear period. The flight north should leave late enough that breakfast and airport access remain calm.
Watch out: Old Town, the river and Sukhumvit are separate travel zones; peak traffic can turn one extra cross-city errand into the loss of an afternoon.

moated Old City lanes, Doi Suthep and northern food or craft experiences
Chiang Mai receives three nights because an airport arrival, a temple circuit and a mountain choice should not share the same clock. Stay around the moat for walkability or around Nimman for contemporary dining, but measure either address against the planned pickup. Use one morning for the Old City, another for Doi Suthep or a longer highland trip, and retain a slower workshop or riverside period when visibility is poor. The nonstop Phuket flight determines the checkout day and should not sit behind a remote excursion.
Watch out: Late dry-season haze can erase the view that justifies a long mountain drive; check current air conditions before paying for that day.

west-coast beaches, Sino-Portuguese Old Town streets and access to Phang Nga Bay
Three Phuket nights work only after choosing the island experience. Kata offers a balanced beach base, Patong favours nightlife, Old Town prioritises food and architecture, and northern shores shorten the airport journey. Use the first settled day for the selected coast, then choose either Old Town and local food or a responsibly operated Phang Nga outing. The last date remains close to the hotel and airport corridor; changing beaches for a final photograph is poor compensation for a fragile flight connection.
Watch out: Phuket distances are deceptive: a cheap room can add long roads to the beach, pier and airport, so price the transfers before choosing it.
Read the Phuket guide →One principal decision shapes each date; arrival periods stay within the neighbourhood of the new room.
Store luggage, verify the room-to-river route and keep the first outing within one neighbourhood. If energy allows, take a short public boat ride or walk a shaded riverside stretch; neither requires a timed cross-city commitment. Eat near the base, buy any temple clothing needed tomorrow and confirm the reserved palace entry. This light opening contains flight delay and jet lag without sacrificing a headline experience.
Base: Bangkok
Reach Rattanakosin near opening time with shoulders and knees covered. Follow the booked palace visit with Wat Pho, then stop rather than adding another distant temple. Lunch and a river crossing can provide shade and orientation before returning to the hotel. The value lies in reading the historic core at walking scale. Check tomorrow’s Chinatown route before dinner so the evening remains free of logistics.
Base: Bangkok
Use the morning for a rail-linked museum, canal-side stop or the contemporary centre, then pause during the strongest heat. Enter Yaowarat later, when shutters rise and food stalls become the main reason to walk. Choose a few busy vendors instead of treating every saved dish as an obligation. Return early enough to pack, verify the domestic terminal and retain a comfortable airport margin for Chiang Mai.
Base: Bangkok
Take the Bangkok–Chiang Mai flight that preserves a useful afternoon without demanding a predawn airport run. After check-in, walk only the nearest side of the moat or Nimman grid and identify the pickup point for the next outing. A market meal supplies a first northern reference without turning arrival into a temple race. Air-quality and mountain forecasts should be checked tonight.
Base: Chiang Mai
Begin around Wat Chedi Luang and connect smaller lanes on foot, stopping for shade rather than crossing the moat repeatedly. The route should reveal living streets as well as major compounds. Later, choose the market that actually operates on this weekday; substitute a neighbourhood food street when the famous weekend option is closed. Keep the return simple and protect sleep before the mountain morning.
Base: Chiang Mai
Leave early for Doi Suthep when air quality and visibility justify the road. Dress for an active religious site and descend before the approach becomes a traffic queue. If haze is heavy, replace the mountain with a cooking class, craft workshop or Wat Ket riverside circuit rather than pretending the panorama is guaranteed. Finish with the Phuket flight details, baggage allowance and airport pickup already saved offline.
Base: Chiang Mai
Fly directly from Chiang Mai when a suitable service operates, treating airport roads and baggage as part of the travel day. Check into the coast selected before booking, inspect the swimming flags and walk only the immediate beach or town. The evening is for understanding local transport and deciding whether the next clear date belongs to the sea, Old Town or Phang Nga Bay.
Base: Phuket
Start early on the beach chosen for the stay and let the posted flags determine whether swimming is appropriate. A headland walk, shaded lunch and late return offer more usable coast time than a rushed circuit of several beaches. Patong nightlife, a Kata sunset and quieter northern sand answer different trips; select one rather than commuting among them. Keep the following day flexible until the marine bulletin is current.
Base: Phuket
Take the land option when seas are unsettled: Old Town rewards a morning among Sino-Portuguese streets, markets and local food without a pier deadline. In suitable conditions, use a licensed Phang Nga operator whose pickup, safety procedure and cancellation terms are explicit. Do not attempt both versions. Whichever runs, return with luggage time and the airport route untouched.
Base: Phuket
Keep the last morning near the accommodation for breakfast, a short swim under safe flags or a final Old Town walk if the hotel is already nearby. Work backward from the terminal check-in, adding the full island road rather than the optimistic map estimate. Collect bags once, use the prearranged vehicle and end the journey without a final boat or remote beach gamble.

Confirm both air sectors from Bangkok onward before making their surrounding rooms restrictive.

Bangkok Chiang Mai
Bangkok and Chiang Mai are linked by frequent air services, but the useful comparison starts at the hotel door. Include Bangkok traffic, terminal processing, baggage and the short Chiang Mai airport road. A mid-morning or early-afternoon departure protects both breakfast and a simple northern orientation after check-in.
Booking note: Choose the Bangkok airport and fare conditions first; only then make the two surrounding nights restrictive.
Chiang Mai Phuket
The Chiang Mai–Phuket flight prevents a return through Bangkok and preserves a full southern day. Nonstop availability and baggage terms are date-specific, while the Phuket arrival road varies sharply by beach. Leave the first island evening unbooked beyond a nearby meal or shoreline walk.
Booking note: Reserve this nonstop sector before the Phuket district, because an inconvenient connection can change the entire final chapter.
Airlines may alter times, prices, baggage terms or the Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket terminals; verify both sectors for the exact date.
Compare both domestic flights from room to room; luggage and airport roads can outweigh a cheap ticket that lands too late.

Bangkok → Chiang Mai → Phuket route
Yes. Nine hotel nights preserve two complete days in every base, while each flight date carries only nearby exploration. A failed sector should prompt a new travel date or one fewer region; compressing all three would defeat the itinerary.
Choose Kata for a balanced beach stay, Patong for nightlife, Old Town for food and architecture, or the north when airport access outranks southern plans. That choice completes the three-climate progression and gives the exit its own margin. Schedule a distant or sea-dependent experience no later than the previous complete day.
Reversing the three-region circuit changes the useful flight pattern and puts the beach before the northern weather check. Reprice both domestic sectors and compare the international exit before deciding; the same place names do not guarantee the same ten-day experience.
The direct Chiang Mai–Phuket sector controls the southern half. After it is reserved, choose the island district around that arrival and the final flight. Bangkok walks, market visits and most local experiences have workable substitutes and can follow.
Smoke can reduce the value of a northern panorama even under blue skies, while a red flag closes the intended swim. Keep the Chiang Mai mountain day and Phuket sea day on separate movable dates.
Put a bonus night in Phuket when swimming or a boat matters most; choose Bangkok when the long-haul arrival is the weak point. Chiang Mai earns it only for a full mountain or craft day.
