Bangkok has one full historic-city day, Hua Hin has one complete beach-and-town day, and Samui has three complete days after arrival. The hotel split is two, two and four nights. Moving the longer island connection to a daytime combined bus-and-boat service keeps that calendar workable without adding a transit night.

This is a flight-free route between its three bases, rather than an all-rail journey. The train stops in Hua Hin; the next stage is an operator-booked road-and-sea connection. Travellers who specifically want to continue by train to Surat Thani need a different dated connection plan. The current State Railway table places train 43 in Surat Thani at 16:20, which alone does not establish time to drive to a mainland pier and board a same-day ferry. An overnight service also changes where that night is spent.

The route suits people who enjoy a mainland resort town as well as an island hotel. It is less useful for a short beach-only break or for anyone wishing to fit Phangan and Tao into the same nine days. The Hua Hin–Samui stage occupies most of day five, and a remote hotel at either end adds road time. A combined ticket can reduce the number of separately purchased connections, but the booking still needs a precise pickup location and Samui arrival pier.

Hua Hin and Samui share the Gulf side of Thailand without sharing identical local weather. The Meteorological Department describes a later rain peak on the southern east coast than on the Andaman coast. Use that as regional context, then check current shipping forecasts and the operator’s service notice. A calm hotel swimming pool says nothing about the conditions of the sea crossing. Likewise, rain need not close every town activity, while rough water can remove an entire boat outing.

Choose one Samui coast as your base. Bophut is a practical choice for village dinners, Chaweng for a busier evening scene, and a quieter western shore for more hotel-centred time. Beach depth and access vary: the municipality describes Lipa Noi as shallow far from shore, which is not the same as a guarantee of good swimming at every tide. Read the actual hotel pin and beach setting rather than assuming all island stays offer the same water.

The final day is a Samui departure day. An airport exit uses a road transfer; a mainland exit adds a boat and possibly another road journey. Neither is included in the inbound bus-and-catamaran reference fare. If an onward connection is on a separate booking, allow the margin its carrier requires and consider an additional mainland night where disruption would be costly. Optional excursions can move within the island stay; a cancelled inter-base crossing may require changes to the hotel calendar itself.

Hua Hin’s two nights suit a central beach stay with town food and railway heritage close by. Khao Takiab is a separate southern beach choice and needs its own hotel-to-town transport plan. The current railway platforms are elevated beside the preserved historic station; an attractive photograph of the old building is not the boarding point. Keep the one full day for your chosen shore and one nearby excursion. Khao Tao’s reservoir and cave-temple area offer an alternative, with stairs at the upper temple rather than guaranteed easy access.

Watch out: Modern railway boarding and the preserved old station are different. A resort farther down the coast also needs a confirmed ride to the bus pickup.

Bophut makes village evenings convenient; Chaweng is a busier base; western and southern resorts often need longer road trips for dinners elsewhere. It is not an automatic extension of a Samui ferry ticket.

The official table checked for this revision lists train 43’s station departure times as 07:30 at Krung Thep Aphiwat and 10:36 at Hua Hin, but confirm the dated service and seats before relying on those reference times. Arrive at the modern elevated station and arrange the hotel transfer with luggage. The preserved old station can feature in a later town walk. After check-in, inspect the beach conditions and eat locally; there is no need to add a distant resort district on the arrival afternoon.

4 Day 4 Give Hua Hin a complete resort-town day

Spend the morning on the shore you chose, then plan an indoor or shaded lunch break rather than treating midday as another exposed walk. Khao Takiab suits a southern beach outing; Khao Tao offers a reservoir and cave-temple alternative farther away. Ask about stairs and the return journey before committing to the latter. Use an evening market only if its actual operating day matches yours. Before bed, confirm the next morning’s bus pickup location, luggage allowance and Samui arrival pier with Lomprayah; the railway station is not a substitute for that pickup instruction.

5 Day 5 Travel by bus and catamaran to Samui Bus

Reach the booked Hua Hin pickup point for the combined daytime service, carrying essentials outside the main luggage bag. Lomprayah’s published timetable gives 08:30–17:30 for the bus-and-catamaran journey to Samui’s Pralarn pier. Check the travel date and vessel instructions directly: published timing is not guaranteed operation. Follow the operator’s road-to-boat handoff, then use the island transfer included in your product or the vehicle you arranged separately. A hotel-transfer version has different timing and pricing. Keep the Samui evening for check-in and dinner, with no prepaid excursion depending on an on-time arrival.

The published 23:30 bus-and-ferry alternative reaches Bangrak pier at 11:15 the following day, rather than Pralarn; confirm the dated product and pier. That overnight journey does not fit the eight-hotel-night calendar unchanged.

Is Bangkok → Hua Hin → Koh Samui realistic in 9 days?

Yes, with the morning railway journey to Hua Hin and a confirmed daytime bus-and-boat connection to Samui. That reaches the island on day five without a separate transit night. It is a mixed-transport itinerary; continuing south by sleeper requires revising the calendar rather than reusing these hotel dates.

Does the arrival fare include transport to my Samui hotel?

That depends on the purchased product and hotel location. Lomprayah publishes both pier-arrival and hotel-transfer versions, with different pricing and journey times. Give the exact hotel name and address when booking, and obtain written confirmation of inclusion. A ferry ticket to Pralarn is not itself a promise of a free island taxi.

Could this journey begin on Samui and finish in Bangkok?

Yes, if your onward travel favours Bangkok. Book the northbound boat-and-road service on its own schedule, then the Hua Hin–Bangkok train. The incoming train and bus times cannot be reversed. Allow for an extra overnight if the dated return connection does not support the same allocation.

Can I replace the Hua Hin–Samui bus with a train?

Only after establishing a workable dated rail, road and ferry chain. Can I assume Ang Thong is open during a Samui stay?
