Capital streets, limestone temples and a day on the bay

Choose this week for three different settings: a lively capital, an inland limestone valley and an island beside the bays. You get a complete day in each base, with the countryside and sea outings separated by a hotel move. A day boat gives you the bay experience while keeping a proper room and dinner ashore.

The six hotel nights are Hanoi on nights 1–2, Ninh Binh on 3–4 and Cat Ba on 5–6. Days three and five are transfer days; day seven returns to Hanoi. This pace is best for people happy to pack twice and carry their own essentials between road and water transport.

Keep the arrival afternoons light. They give you time to find meals, settle into the room and get your bearings before the full outings. A late flight into Hanoi simply shortens the first walk; the citadel visit is on the following day. The mainland departure after Cat Ba has its own booking, described on day seven.

Two layers of Hanoi’s history

The Thang Long Citadel brings imperial remains and the later D67 wartime command house into one morning. They tell different stories: the long life of the capital and the decisions made during twentieth-century war.

Stories moving across water

Water puppetry grew from villages of the Red River Delta. At Thang Long Theatre, wooden figures move across a pool to traditional music. The fifty-minute programme adds a lively evening to the capital stay.

A Hanoi lunch to remember

Bun cha brings grilled pork, rice noodles and herbs to the table. Egg coffee is a different local pleasure, with sweet whipped egg above the coffee. Try them at separate meal and café stops rather than turning the day into a food checklist.

Temples within the inland karst

Hoa Lu’s ancient-capital temples and Bich Dong’s mountainside shrines give the limestone scenery a cultural focus. The lower pagoda grounds and higher stepped tiers offer different lengths of visit, so a countryside day need not depend on a boat.

A fishing village on the bay

The day boat passes Cai Beo, where floating homes and fish farming are part of the working waterfront. The guide can explain the village as the boat continues into the limestone islands; it is more than scenery between kayaking stops.

Karst from a kayak

Paddling through rock arches and into lagoons brings you closer to the bay’s smaller waterways. The boat carries you between areas, while the guided kayak section is the active part of the day. Tide and weather shape the route.

Best for

  • A first northern week with history, countryside and bay scenery
  • Travellers who prefer island hotel nights to sleeping on a cruise

StartBooker answer

How should I spend seven days in Hanoi, Ninh Binh and Cat Ba?

Hanoi opens this route with two nights; Ninh Binh and Cat Ba each get two more. This northern week combines the capital’s citadel and water puppets, limestone temples near Tam Coc, and a guided Lan Ha Bay day from an island hotel. Travel between bases on days three and five, then return to Hanoi on day seven. In Ninh Binh, a Hoa Lu and Bich Dong land outing works without relying on an unconfirmed public boat route. The Cat Ba sightseeing boat and mainland transfer are separate bookings. The plan suits travellers who want contrasting landscapes without a domestic flight.

Island crossing
The Ninh Binh–Cat Ba coach product includes its ferry crossing.
Inland World Heritage
Trang An’s World Heritage landscape includes Hoa Lu and the Tam Coc–Bich Dong area.
Boat departure
Cat Ba Ventures meets in town before an included bus to Ben Beo pier.

  1. Hanoi Opera House columns beneath blue sky 1

    Hanoi

    2 nights

Capital history, lake walks and Hanoi food

Hoan Kiem and the Old Quarter north of the lake suit the opening walk, independent meals and theatre evening. A quieter hotel farther from the centre adds taxi rides during the single full day. Choose a room where you can eat after a late landing and leave easily for the morning coach.

  2. Tam Coc river bends below Hang Mua viewpoint 2

    Ninh Binh

    2 nights

    Ancient temples and limestone countryside

Tam Coc puts village restaurants and the limestone valley around the stay. A garden lodge in Hai Nham offers a quieter setting, with rides for town meals and sightseeing. Ninh Binh city is another location: agree where the arriving coach stops and complete the road to your countryside room.

An island base for the Lan Ha outing

Cat Ba town makes restaurant evenings and the two departure offices easier to reach. Cat Co resort lodging gives you beach facilities, with a separate ride into town when needed. Forest accommodation farther inland suits a different, longer stay; for this route, put the bay day’s morning meeting and return dinner first.

From the first lake walk to the Hanoi return

Each full outing sits between an arrival and departure. The two hotel moves leave the evening at the next base.

1 Day 1 Arrive in Hanoi and find the lake

At Noi Bai, finish entry formalities and collect the bags before meeting your driver or taking an airport taxi to the hotel. Bus 86 costs VND 50,000 per person to Hanoi railway station, followed by your hotel taxi. Check in, or agree bag storage if the room is not ready. Start near the red Huc Bridge on Hoan Kiem Lake. Follow the shore towards Trang Tien, then turn back towards your central hotel for dinner. This is an outdoor orientation walk; entering Ngoc Son Temple is a separate visit. For a first meal, pho is noodle soup. Ask what is in your chosen dish if ingredients matter. After a long journey, a shorter walk and an early meal are enough. A hotel away from the lake needs a taxi back. If you land late, stay near the room for dinner and save the lakeside for tomorrow.

  • Airport bags and hotel arrival
  • A short lakeside walk and first meal

2 Day 2 Citadel history, lunch and water puppets

Begin the morning at 19C Hoang Dieu, the Thang Long Citadel’s visitor entrance, reached by taxi from your hotel. It opens daily from 08:00 to 17:00; buy ordinary entry or bring the emailed QR ticket. Follow the visitor signs through the imperial remains and the D67 wartime command-house area. Allow time to read the displays rather than treating it as a quick photograph stop. Try bun cha for lunch, then return to the hotel for a break. Reserve a later Thang Long water-puppet show at 57B Dinh Tien Hoang, beside Hoan Kiem. The performance lasts fifty minutes and is in Vietnamese, with music and movement telling much of the story. Reach the theatre for the time on your ticket; the audio guide is an extra if you want it. Eat nearby afterwards and walk or ride back to the hotel. Someone skipping the show can wait in a café, rejoining the group for dinner. Check tomorrow’s coach meeting and pack before bed.

  • 19C Hoang Dieu entry
  • 57B Dinh Tien Hoang for the reserved show

3 Day 3 Check out for the Ninh Binh countryside

After breakfast, leave with all bags for the morning coach. Cat Ba Express arranges the Ninh Binh service through its own or partner network; use the pickup on your confirmation. The office example is 214 Tran Quang Khai, with some accepted Old Quarter hotel pickups. Meet the receiving car if the coach’s stop is separate from your lodge. A driver needs the property name and entrance, particularly for Hai Nham garden accommodation. On reaching the property, check in or arrange bag storage, then have lunch and keep the afternoon local. In Tam Coc, walk through the village towards the boat-station surroundings and choose dinner nearby. At a rural lodge, enjoy the garden and arrange dinner there instead. The afternoon is for settling into the valley, not completing tomorrow’s temples. Ask reception to arrange the car for the full day and its return to the same hotel.

  • The confirmed morning coach pickup
  • Lodge arrival, lunch and a local afternoon

Base: Ninh Binh

4 Day 4 Hoa Lu temples, Tam Coc lunch and Bich Dong

Use a car for Hoa Lu’s ancient-capital temples in the morning, then lunch near Tam Coc. Continue to Bich Dong Pagoda and return to your hotel with the same driver. The upper shrines involve steps; a shorter visit can stay around the lower grounds. If you want a strenuous viewpoint, replace the pagoda afternoon with Hang Mua’s roughly five hundred steep steps. A management-board notice dated 17 September 2026 suspended Trang An and Van Long boating and shortened Tam Coc’s route. A later article records a hosted Trang An boat visit on 1 October, but does not confirm ordinary public reopening. Ask the relevant ticket office which public route it can sell for your visit. A confirmed boat can replace part of this land day; keep the temple route if no suitable public trip is available. Finish with dinner near the room and arrange the ride to tomorrow’s coach pickup. A rural hotel may be well outside the named Tam Coc meeting point, so include that last road when setting your morning departure.

  • A complete temple-and-countryside land day
  • Boating only on a confirmed public route

Base: Ninh Binh

5 Day 5 Breakfast, the crossing and a Cat Ba room

Check out after breakfast and take your lodge car to the confirmed coach meeting. Keep drinking water, a snack, documents and any essentials in a small bag; show the driver the rest of the luggage. The combined Ninh Binh service takes the road to its ferry crossing and then continues towards Cat Ba town. Follow the crew’s directions during the crossing, including where to keep your day bag. At the accepted town drop, walk or take the final ride to your hotel. Eat lunch after settling in, then spend the afternoon around the town waterfront on Mot Thang Tu. Watch the harbour activity and choose a restaurant for dinner. Cat Co guests can stay around their resort instead of adding another taxi evening. For tomorrow, arrange your route to Cat Ba Ventures’ office. Agree the morning ride if your hotel is away from town, then enjoy dinner and an early night.

  • Lodge road, coach and ferry
  • Town waterfront or a resort afternoon

Base: Cat Ba

6 Day 6 Meet Ventures for the full Lan Ha Bay day

Have breakfast before leaving the hotel. Reach Cat Ba Ventures at 223 Mot Thang Tu for the 08:30 start. Its included bus takes about five minutes to Ben Beo pier. Board the day boat, passing Cai Beo’s floating fishing village before continuing through Lan Ha and Ha Long scenery. Lunch is served aboard at 12:30. The guided kayaking takes about ninety minutes to two hours, following rock arches, tunnels and lagoons. Tell the operator before booking if someone needs a different participation or boarding arrangement. Swimming and optional snorkelling depend on weather and water clarity; the route can change with tide and conditions. The published return reaches Cat Ba town around 17:30–18:00. From there, complete the walk or ride to your own hotel, change and have dinner.

  • 223 Mot Thang Tu before the Ben Beo bus
  • Onboard lunch, kayaking and the town return

Base: Cat Ba

7 Day 7 Take the separate morning connection to Hanoi

Have breakfast, check out and collect every bag. Cat Ba Express’s return starts at its 191 Mot Thang Tu office or an agreed central-hotel collection; it is a different company and office from yesterday’s boat tour. A listed morning departure is 09:30. Follow the confirmed pickup and the crossing instructions for the product you bought, whether bus with speedboat, cable connection or the limousine-and-ferry option. The advertised journey is about three hours fifteen minutes, excluding collection. The Hanoi drop is an accepted Old Quarter hotel or 214 Tran Quang Khai. Continue by taxi to any other receiving address, then have lunch and arrange bag storage if you have time before the next journey. For an international flight, book a Hanoi or airport-area hotel for the night before departure and take the airport road the following day. That is a seventh hotel night beyond this six-night week. The island crossing can be delayed or changed, so avoid making a fixed flight depend on the coach’s advertised arrival. Travellers continuing by road or rail likewise need a separate onward ticket and its own joining point.

  • 191 Mot Thang Tu or the accepted hotel pickup
  • Hanoi drop, lunch and the onward plan

Base: Cat Ba

Book the two hotel moves, then the separate return

Book your dates and save the confirmation showing the pickup, crossing and final stop. Day seven describes the separately booked Hanoi return.

2 transfers

  1. Hanoi Ninh Binh

Bus Travel time: About two hours by coach, plus the lodge road

Cat Ba Express can arrange a Hanoi–Ninh Binh limousine or coach through its partners. Its listed office is 214 Tran Quang Khai, and some confirmed Old Quarter pickups are available. Pick a morning journey for time to settle into the valley. The operator estimates about two hours on the road. Get the actual Ninh Binh city, Tam Coc or Trang An-side drop when booking, then arrange a car if it is not your hotel entrance. A rural lodge needs that destination rather than a generic city name. Tell the receiving driver which coach you are on and keep their number available. A private car is an alternative for a party wanting a direct hotel-to-hotel move or more room for bags. Request the vehicle and total quote for your named passengers and luggage; compare that whole-party amount with individual coach seats.

  2. Ninh Binh Cat Ba

Transfer Travel time: About 4½–5 hours, including the ferry

The Ninh Binh–Cat Ba service lists Duc Tuan Restaurant or Tam Coc boat station as valley meeting choices, and Hoa Lu Hotel for Ninh Binh city. Arrive twenty minutes before the departure on your confirmation. A garden lodge needs a separate ride to that point. The combined fare includes the ferry. The published vehicle-ferry version takes its bus onto the vessel and continues on the island road; follow the instructions for your particular crossing rather than borrowing the Hanoi route’s speedboat terminal. No separate sightseeing boat is included. Town-hotel drop-off is the useful booking reference. For Cat Co or a more distant address, agree where the service finishes and how you reach reception. The company estimates four and a half to five hours for the transfer, leaving the afternoon for food and settling in rather than an attraction appointment.

Price the room arrangement, coach seats and outings

The coach amounts are listed starting fares per passenger; the boat is a shared day-tour price. Multiply by the actual party and add hotel roads, meals not included and room rates for your dates.

Hanoi room example Two adults plus one child under four. The double is windowless; the twin has an internal window.
La Siesta Ma May Superior: 23–25 m², queen or two twins
A garden lodge room Three adults OR two adults and two children under twelve; maximum one extra bed. Agree the sleeping layout.
Tam Coc Garden Deluxe Tonkin Garden: 50 m², garden view
A two-bedroom island example Two bedrooms and a bay-facing balcony; ask for the actual bed arrangement for your party.
Flamingo Two Bedroom Deluxe Residence Ocean: 135 m², maximum four guests
Hanoi–Ninh Binh coach This is a shared-seat starting fare. A rural-hotel connection or private car is quoted separately.
From USD 15 each; USD 30 for two adult seats
Ninh Binh–Cat Ba crossing The listed fare includes the ferry and town-hotel drop. The seller lists a 20% holiday surcharge; price your own date and party.
From USD 13 each; USD 26 for two
The land outing Two adult Hoa Lu entries total VND 40,000. The optional climb is another purchase; add the car and lunch.
Adult entry to Hoa Lu is VND 20,000; the optional Hang Mua climb costs VND 150,000 per person.
A confirmed Trang An substitute Two such entries total VND 600,000, before the road. Use only a public route confirmed under the day-four plan.
Published entry above 1.3 m: VND 300,000 per person
Citadel and theatre Under-sixteens are exempt with proof of age. Buy the theatre seat separately; its audio guide is extra.
Citadel: VND 100,000 ordinary entry; VND 200,000 for two
The shared Lan Ha day Boat, bay entry, kayak equipment, lunch, drinking water and guide included. Other drinks and tips are extra; a private group needs its own quote.
USD 36 per adult; USD 72 for two
Cat Ba–Hanoi on day seven The return is separate from the bay day. Cable or limousine/ferry variants have different listed prices; confirm the selected product.
Bus with speedboat from USD 13 each; USD 26 for two

Booking tips

  • Send the hotel the ages of every child and the beds you need. Ask it to confirm the arrangement in the named category before paying.
  • Give the coach seller large or unusual bag dimensions in advance. Hanoi–Ninh Binh lists one standard suitcase and one small carry-on; ask separately about the other tickets.
  • Tell the boat company about dietary requirements while reserving, and ask what its onboard lunch can accommodate.
  • Save all three coach confirmations and the bay booking offline, with the company name beside each meeting point. The two Cat Ba departure offices have different operators.

Details that change the bookings

Could the bear sanctuary replace the temple day?

Yes, as a separately arranged land outing. FOUR PAWS’s guided sanctuary visit is on the Cuc Phuong–Bai Dinh road and lasts ninety to 120 minutes, with a skywalk and an introduction to the rescued bears’ care. The product is closed on Tuesdays and asks for advance availability confirmation. Book a car there and back from your lodge, replacing the temple circuit rather than trying to fit both into one packed day. The listed guided visit is VND 250,000; choose the accepted time and lunch plan before leaving.

How does the shared boat price children?

Cat Ba Ventures lists children aged three and younger free, ages four to six at half price, seven to eight at 85%, and nine or older at full price. At the published USD 36 adult rate, two adults and a five-year-old total USD 90. Give the company the child’s age and discuss the full day and kayak section before booking. This attraction tariff is separate from the coach’s child rule and the hotel’s room capacity; do not apply one allowance to every part of the holiday.

Is the USD 36 boat a private family trip?

No, it is a per-person shared programme, published for a group under thirty-eight people. Other guests will be aboard. A family or group wanting a private trip should request its own quote from Cat Ba Ventures, explaining the interests and pace they want. Ask what that quote includes for the boat, bay fees, guide, food and kayaking, rather than multiplying the shared price and assuming it buys exclusive use. Keep the accepted start and return compatible with your island hotel dates.

Can a companion stay aboard instead of kayaking?

Ask Cat Ba Ventures before reserving. Tell it why the companion prefers the boat, whether they need help boarding and how the rest of the party wants to paddle. Get an agreed waiting and reunion arrangement for the actual programme. A private outing may be worth discussing if the shared route cannot provide what you need. The kayaking lasts well over an hour, so this choice affects a substantial part of the day rather than a short photo stop.

What should I carry for the bay day?

Leave the main suitcase at the island hotel and use a small daypack. Take clothes that can get wet, a towel, a dry change and sun protection. Keep personal medication and electronics with you, protected from splashes. The operator lists a waterproof bag, headlamps and kayak equipment in the tour, but ask which items you will use and how to protect anything delicate. Put wet clothing away separately when you return to the room.

How would I add a national-park day?

Stay a third night on Cat Ba. Use day seven for a separately arranged park outing and move the Hanoi return to day eight: two Hanoi nights, two Ninh Binh nights and three island nights make seven nights over eight days. The park has forest as well as marine habitat, offering a different interest from the bay cruise. Ask the guide for the trail, effort, start and return transport before choosing it. Keep that added night for a shower, dinner and rest rather than rushing from the walk to the ferry.
