Vietnam: a week in one region or a longer journey south

Search stays
Quick answer

Allow one region for a week; the longer examples below show how to combine north, centre and south.

Central gateway
Hoi An has no airport or railway station. Arrive in Da Nang, then continue by road.
Southern options
Can Tho is for river trips; Mui Ne for mainland coast and kitesurfing; Phu Quoc for an island beach stay.
Northern mountains
Sapa suits guided walks and village stays. Ha Giang is a separate trip through mountain roads, usually with a guide.
Cave trips
A visitor cave and an overnight expedition are different bookings. Hang En involves two days of hiking and camping.
Entry documents
If you need an e-visa, use evisa.gov.vn or thithucdientu.gov.vn. Match the permitted entry, dates and passport details to your trip.
Emergency numbers
Call 115 for an ambulance. The nationwide 112 line handles incidents and disasters around the clock and refers calls to specialist services.

StartBooker answer

What is a sensible itinerary for a first Vietnam trip?

For a first visit, spend one week in the north or central Vietnam, rather than crossing the whole country. With two weeks, combine Hanoi and Ninh Binh with Hue and Hoi An, flying between regions. Three weeks can add Phong Nha and Saigon, with a Mekong Delta overnight if river life interests you. Choose the coast to suit your dates: central beaches and Phu Quoc have different rainy seasons. For the northern bays, decide between a cruise and a Cat Ba island stay before choosing accommodation.

Hoi An arrival
Hoi An is reached by road from Da Nang airport; allow about 50 minutes to the Ancient Town.
Two bay bases
Ha Long Bay and Cat Ba belong to the same UNESCO property, but need different arrival arrangements.
Different seasons
Central Vietnam’s late-year rain differs from the summer rainy season in the north.

Quick quiz

What matters most: Hanoi’s streets, beaches or the mountains?

Best places to stay in Vietnam

Hanoi Opera House’s yellow facade and classical columns Hanoi
culture

Hanoi is a good place to start if you want history, food and time on foot before heading into the countryside. Visit the Imperial Citadel for the story of the old capital, then see a water-puppet performance near Hoan Kiem Lake. The Old Quarter puts small restaurants and historic streets close to your room. West Lake offers a different setting, with more journeys back to those central sights. Choose between them by where you expect to spend your evenings, rather than the hotel photograph alone.

Tam Coc rice fields beside the Ngo Dong waterway Ninh Binh
nature

Ninh Binh offers limestone scenery without an overnight cruise. Stay around Tam Coc for village rooms and cycling, or in Ninh Binh city for transport. Hoa Lu’s ancient-capital temples and Bich Dong pagoda add cultural visits; Hang Mua has a steep viewpoint climb. Use the limited Tam Coc boat outing only if it runs that morning. Bear Sanctuary Ninh Binh is on the Cuc Phuong–Bai Dinh road, away from Tam Coc; it closes Tuesdays, so choose another day.

Ha Long limestone islets in clear blue water Ha Long and Cat Ba
beach

A day cruise, an overnight cabin and a Cat Ba hotel offer three different ways to see the bay. Choose a day boat if you prefer to sleep ashore; a cabin lets the evening and following morning be part of the cruise. Cat Ba suits an island stay with separate boat outings. Many Ha Long cruises use Tuan Chau, but the joining point depends on the operator. The accommodation guide linked here covers Ha Long: Cat Ba needs its own island transfer and hotel choice.

Flowers carried through a lantern-lined Hoi An lane Hoi An
local-vibe

Hoi An suits travellers who want historic streets with time for a workshop or the beach. Stay near the Ancient Town for evening walks and restaurants; An Bang puts the sand first. Cam Chau and Cam Thanh offer quieter stays outside the centre, so factor in rides for old-town evenings. Explore a trading house or assembly hall, then choose an activity: cooking, a craft visit or cycling around the farms. A beach stay and an old-town room give you different days, despite sharing the Hoi An label.

Saigon Opera House fronted by trees and flowerbeds Ho Chi Minh City
food

Give Saigon several days if food and history lead your trip. The Opera House and central civic buildings make an easy first sightseeing area; Cholon adds Chinese-Vietnamese temples and trading streets farther west. You can use the city as a base for an excursion without leaving every morning. Central accommodation suits a short stay with restaurants and sights nearby. A larger apartment farther out may help families or a longer visit, but the extra space comes with rides back to the centre.

Turquoise water lapping Bai Sao sand on Phu Quoc Phu Quoc
romantic

Finish on Phu Quoc for several days by the sea without changing hotels. Long Beach and Duong Dong suit a west-coast stay with town restaurants nearby. Ong Lang has another resort setting; Khem and An Thoi are in the south, closer to Hon Thom outings. Choose the stretch of coast where you want to spend ordinary beach days before adding excursions across the island. A remote resort is useful if its facilities are the attraction, less so if you want to walk into town every evening.

Use trains, flights and arranged transfers between bases. Book the final ride to a rural lodge, resort or cruise too; the station or pier may be some distance away.

Season guide

When to go: the north, centre and south differ

December–January

Weather
Southern beaches are in their drier season. Hanoi and the northern mountains can be cold and misty; Hue and Hoi An may still be wet.
Crowds
For a Christmas or New Year cruise, reserve the cabin you want rather than assuming an ordinary departure is available.
Prices
Compare the cabin package with its transfer cost. Bhaya’s terms include only the transport expressly stated in your booking.
Best For
Saigon, the Delta and a Phu Quoc beach stay.

February–March

Weather
Hanoi can remain cool and cloudy. Hoi An improves towards spring; Hue’s wet season can extend into February.
Crowds
Tet, Vietnamese Lunar New Year, falls around January or February. Give holiday transport and any named venue extra attention.
Prices
Keep the heritage and hotel budgets separate: Hoi An’s current selected-site ticket costs VND 120,000, while rooms depend on your dates.
Best For
Hoi An in March, or southern travel with holiday dates in mind.

April–May

Weather
The north turns warmer, and central Vietnam suits heritage visits with time by the coast. City sightseeing can be hot.
Crowds
Da Nang’s tourism authority places its peak season from March to August. Beach-room choice can be more constrained than an inland stay.
Prices
Choose the room category, then compare the same inclusions on possible spring dates. A family room and two doubles are different offers.
Best For
Hanoi and Ninh Binh, or Hue–Hoi An with beach time.

June–August

Weather
Central beaches are often a better choice than Phu Quoc now. Northern Vietnam is hot and rainy, with storms that can interrupt cruises.
Crowds
Summer falls within Da Nang’s main visitor season. Book a particular beachfront room before filling the days with optional outings.
Prices
For a bay tour, cancellation terms matter alongside the fare: a cancelled departure can change the next hotel night too.
Best For
Da Nang and Hoi An, with sightseeing early in the day.

September–October

Weather
Autumn often suits Hanoi and the northern mountains. Central Vietnam has heavier rain and possible flooding; Phu Quoc can still be wet.
Crowds
Da Nang’s wet season is generally less crowded, according to the local tourism authority. That does not describe every northern destination.
Prices
A lower central-coast room quote is not the same holiday as a dry-season beach stay. Choose it for interests that still work in rain.
Best For
Northern city and landscape visits; a trail chosen for current conditions.

November

Weather
The south moves towards drier weather, and the north can be comfortable for sightseeing. Central rain may continue, especially around Hue and Hoi An.
Crowds
The central coast remains outside its main summer visitor season. Southern resort demand should be assessed separately.
Prices
Price the southern extension on its own: island accommodation, the journey there and activities are separate purchases.
Best For
A northern trip or Saigon and the Delta with a southern beach option.

Routes that fit one, two or three weeks

Last reviewed 5 October 2026

For seven days in the north, use six nights: Hanoi three, Tam Coc two and Hanoi one before departure from Noi Bai. Arrive on day one, explore Hanoi on days two and three, travel to Ninh Binh on day four, see the countryside on day five and return on day six. Leave on day seven. The road journey is roughly two to three hours, depending on pickup and traffic; a train reaches Ninh Binh city, with another ride to Tam Coc. For a bay-led week, replace the countryside nights with an overnight cruise and an extra Hanoi night. Cat Ba needs more island-transfer time: make it the main extension rather than another stop.

For Ninh Binh, a 17 September 2026 management-board notice suspended Trang An and Van Long visits and the Bich Dong electric circuit. It shortened Tam Coc’s boat route to the wharf, Hang Ca, the entrance of Hang Hai and back, excluding Hang Ba. The board later reported a delegation’s boat trip through Trang An on 1 October. That hosted visit does not establish which public routes have reopened. Ask the ticket office which route and ticket are available on your date. If your water outing is unavailable, visit Bich Dong pagoda and the ancient-capital temples at Hoa Lu instead.

A central week can use two nights in Hue and four in Hoi An. Arrive through Phu Bai airport for Hue, visit the Imperial City on the full day, then travel south on day three. The Hue–Da Nang train takes roughly three to four hours along the coast and over the Hai Van Pass; Hoi An is reached by road from Da Nang. Spend the following three full days on historic buildings, a workshop and the beach, then depart through Da Nang airport on day seven. You do not need a third hotel just to see Da Nang: if its beach and museums interest you more, replace some Hoi An nights with a Da Nang stay.

For fourteen days, combine the north and centre with thirteen nights: Hanoi three, Ninh Binh two, Hanoi one, Hue two and Hoi An five. The return Hanoi night separates the countryside journey from the flight to Hue. Vietnam Airlines sells Hanoi–Hue flights; select the departure for your date before fixing the Hue arrival. After two Hue nights, continue by train to Da Nang and car to Hoi An. Depart from Da Nang on day fourteen. This route leaves out Ha Long, Sapa and the south. If an overnight cruise matters more than Ninh Binh, substitute the bay for those two nights instead of adding another transfer to an already full fortnight.

For twenty-one days, use twenty nights: Hanoi three, Ninh Binh two, the train to Dong Hoi one, Phong Nha three, Hue two, Hoi An four and Saigon five. Take the overnight train on day six, then the road transfer to Phong Nha on day seven. Sleep there before a cave adventure. Travel to Hue on day ten and Hoi An on day twelve. Fly Da Nang–Saigon on day sixteen and depart internationally on day twenty-one. This combines rail and a flight. For a Delta stay, split the final five nights into Saigon two, Can Tho two and Saigon one, returning to the departure city before the flight.

Choose the cave experience before booking Phong Nha rooms. Oxalis’s Hang En involves hiking, river crossings and camping, unlike ordinary cave admission. For three nights, arrive on day one, take the two-day adventure on the next two days and leave the following morning. One night is the cave camp, so book only two hotel nights. Nuoc Nut is a one-day adventure with its own walking and cave requirements. Arrive the day before either early-start tour and check its departure calendar and suitability assessment. If Sapa trekking or Ha Giang is the main attraction, replace another part of the route to give it time.

Book the least flexible parts first: international entry and departure, the internal flight joining regions, then the cruise, cave expedition or workshop central to the trip. Arriving in Hanoi and leaving from Saigon? Compare multi-city flights with a return ticket and the extra domestic journey it requires. Keep city meals and untimed walks open. Give Phu Quoc several nights by replacing part of the southern stay, rather than flying there for one beach afternoon. Before a fixed international mainland flight, allow a mainland night; it reduces crossing risk without guaranteeing protection from prolonged disruption.

Getting around

Airports and the road journey after landing

Hanoi uses Noi Bai airport, where bus 86 connects with Hanoi Railway Station; the airport lists VND 50,000 per passenger. A taxi or booked car can take you to the hotel instead. For Hoi An, use Da Nang airport and arrange the onward drive: the tourism authority gives about 50 minutes to the Ancient Town. Hue uses Phu Bai, while Dong Hoi serves the Phong Nha area. Choose an internal flight when it saves a long journey, then include baggage charges and both airport transfers in the comparison.

Trains: choose a seat or a berth

Book through Vietnam Railways with each passenger’s name and identity details. A seat suits a daytime journey; for an overnight service, choose the berth and class you want rather than assuming all sleeper tickets are equivalent. Keep the e-ticket available offline and check the station printed on it. The Hue–Da Nang heritage train is a useful shorter rail experience, with coastal scenery and the Hai Van Pass. Its operator gives a journey of around three hours, with some listed services taking longer; use the booking page for the departure on your date.

Road transfers to Tam Coc and the bays

Hanoi to Ninh Binh is roughly two to three hours by road; some vans go to Tam Coc, while a city arrival leaves another ride to the rural hotel. Bhaya gives about two and a half to three hours from Hanoi to its Tuan Chau cruise base. That is a Ha Long transfer, not a Cat Ba arrival. For Cat Ba, buy an island transfer that states its crossing and final stop. On a bus, confirm where you board, where bags travel and whether the quoted drop-off reaches your accommodation.

Ferries to Phu Quoc

Superdong sells Phu Quoc crossings from Ha Tien and Rach Gia, two different mainland ports. Choose the departure before arranging the journey to the coast; Can Tho is inland, not the ferry terminal. The island arrival also needs a road transfer to your chosen beach. Save the port and pickup instructions with the booking, and keep valuables and the items needed during the crossing in a small bag. A flight may be simpler for a short island visit, depending on where you start and the services sold for your dates.

Drivers and guided countryside days

A driver can link Hue’s royal tombs or other dispersed countryside sights without changing hotels. Agree the stops, waiting time, return destination and total price before setting out. For Ha Giang, choose a guided route with the overnight stops and vehicle specified. You can take a passenger trip instead of riding a motorbike yourself. Anyone considering self-riding needs the appropriate licence and insurance; UK government advice warns that road conditions and accident risks require care. A Jeep tour still involves long stretches on winding roads, so choose it because you want that journey.

Walking, stairs and mobility needs

Group city sights into short outings and use a ride for another district. Rural scenery asks more of you: Hang Mua is a steep stair climb, boat tours involve boarding a small vessel, and adventure caves include uneven ground and physical effort. If stairs or transfers are difficult, ask the operator about the exact boarding point, walking surface and assistance for the chosen trip. At Noi Bai, dedicated facilities are listed for passengers with limited mobility. For a Hoi An craft visit, Reaching Out can discuss access by arrangement; this does not establish step-free access throughout the Ancient Town.

Budget Snapshot

Listed adult tariffs: Tam Coc VND 250,000 (without the electric circuit), Hang Mua VND 150,000 and Hoa Lu VND 20,000. Check the dated boat-route restrictions above.
There is no single cheap season for the whole country. Compare the same room and inclusions on your possible dates. A lower wet-season beach price is only useful if the stay still offers what you want.
In Hanoi and Saigon, a room close to your planned meals and sights can reduce taxi spending. For a rural lodge or remote beach resort, add the transfers before comparing its price with a more central room.
For Tet, Christmas or New Year, request the complete dated room or cruise price, including any festive meal or supplement shown in that offer. A national holiday does not give every hotel and operator the same price.
Oxalis prices checked 5 October 2026: Hang En VND 9,500,000/person for two days; Nuoc Nut VND 2,150,000/person for one day. These and the admissions are individual purchases, not a daily allowance. Multiply tickets by eligible travellers, then add rooms, hotel-to-outing transfers and excluded extras.

Do I need a separate visa for each entry into Vietnam?

If you need a visa, a single-entry e-visa covers one entry. A trip that leaves Vietnam and then returns needs the appropriate permission for the return, such as a multiple-entry e-visa. The Immigration Department offers e-visas for up to 90 days, but the dates granted on your document govern your stay. Decide this before reserving a side trip across a border; a single-entry document cannot be reused simply because its end date is still in the future.

Is the Hoi An Ancient Town ticket valid at every attraction?

No. The heritage centre’s VND 120,000 package covers a specified selection: the Japanese Covered Bridge or Quan Cong Temple, one museum and three other monuments. Its current notice allows use for up to three days during your stay. A workshop, cooking class or other privately run experience is a separate purchase. Select the historic buildings you want to visit before buying; a UNESCO designation is not an all-attractions pass.

Can I visit both Ha Long and Ninh Binh without repeating the same experience?

Yes. The contrast is coastal cruising in Ha Long and inland valleys around Ninh Binh. To make the second stop worthwhile, include a countryside outing or cultural visit rather than booking only another boat ride. In a short northern week, choose one extension. If you have more days, reserve both for different reasons and account for the road journey between them; they are separate destinations, not neighbouring stops on one boat tour.

How do I choose a Sapa walk that suits my fitness?

Ask the local guide for the distance, ascent, trail surface and overnight arrangement of the proposed walk. ETHOS and Sapa Sisters offer different guided itineraries, so the word trekking does not identify one standard effort level. A village stay with a shorter walk can be a better choice than a multi-day trek if you want the landscape without long hiking days. Wet ground and mist can change the experience; decide the trail with the guide, not from a terrace photograph.

Can younger children take part in the cave adventures?

The named Oxalis programmes have age limits: Nuoc Nut lists ages 12–70, while Hang En lists 16–70. They are adventure tours, not ordinary cave admission. For younger children, look at conventional visitor-cave outings and discuss the particular walking, stairs and boat arrangement with the organiser. Do not book an adventure on the assumption that a child can accompany the adults without taking part: the operator must accept every participant.

Is Can Tho a good overnight stop after Saigon?

Yes, if you want an early river outing and time for the Delta beyond a return day trip. A central base puts town restaurants nearby; a garden stay makes the accommodation part of the outing. Cai Rang is a working wholesale market, so do not expect a staged attraction with the same activity all day. Ask your host what the boat route includes: the market, a garden stop and hotel pickup are different parts of the offer.

What worked on your Vietnam trip?
