A city opening, two delta days and an island finish

The pleasure of this route is the change of pace. Saigon offers a palace morning, busy shopping streets and meals you can choose independently. Can Tho puts you close enough to Cai Rang for a dawn departure, with another day for a historic family house or an islet excursion. Phu Quoc leaves room for a beach morning, a seafood-noodle dinner and one longer outing across the southern archipelago.

Book the city for nights after days 1–3, Can Tho after days 4–6 and the island after days 7–9. Days 4 and 7 move between hotels; the two days following each move are available for sightseeing. The island connection uses a mainland car and a daytime ferry, so the nine nights are all spent in hotels. Choose this sequence if staying in the delta is part of the holiday rather than a quick detour from Saigon.

December through March offers a useful overlap between the southern dry season and Phu Quoc’s beach season. June through August can appeal more to travellers interested in Can Tho’s fruit gardens, while bringing a wetter island trade-off. Leave room for local rain or changes in sea conditions whichever month you choose.

Rooms where recent history happened

The Independence Palace offers a different kind of city visit from a street walk. Choose palace-only admission or the exhibition combination, then spend the morning with the building and its historical interpretation.

Cholon beyond the city centre

Thien Hau and Binh Tay bring temple life and market trade into the same neighbourhood day. They contrast with Dong Khoi’s central facades, and give a reason to take a car beyond the first hotel’s walking area.

Read the produce poles

A pineapple or other crop tied high on a boat tells buyers what is for sale below. That simple advertising system is a more revealing Cai Rang detail than trying to count every boat on the river.

Look closely at Binh Thuy

Green shutters, curved stairways and a tiled courtyard frame the historic house. Inside, European decorative elements sit alongside the family’s ancestral altar: a domestic subject that complements the morning market.

A Phu Quoc bowl you finish yourself

Bun quay brings rice noodles and seafood together with a sauce mixed by the diner. Mix chilli and citrus into the sauce to your taste.

An archipelago seen from above

The cable ride from Sunset Town to Hon Thom changes the island perspective from a hotel beach to sea and offshore islands. Choose a park activity or a leisurely lunch once across, leaving time for the return ride.

Best for

  • Travellers combining city history, a working river and a beach stay
  • A couple or family wanting one base at a time and independent meals

StartBooker answer

How do I combine Saigon, Can Tho and Phu Quoc in ten days?

Use nine hotel nights for a city–delta–island holiday, split equally between Saigon, Can Tho and Phu Quoc. This gives two full days in each base: palace and neighbourhood visits, Cai Rang and Binh Thuy, then beach time and an optional Hon Thom outing. Travel to Can Tho by road; reach Phu Quoc via a car to Rach Gia, a ferry to Bai Vong and a hotel transfer. The ten-day plan starts with a city arrival and ends at Phu Quoc Airport, with nine hotel nights between them.

Another city bowl
Hu tieu comes as soup or dry noodles with broth served alongside.
River trade
Cai Rang’s wholesale boats display their produce on poles.
House address
Binh Thuy’s historic house is at 144 Bui Huu Nghia.
Island landing
Phu Quoc Express sails from Rach Gia to Bai Vong.
A sauce of your own
Bun quay diners mix the seasoning sauce for their seafood noodles.
Return cable ticket
The standard Hon Thom ticket includes the return cable ride and named parks, without lunch.

Pick the hotel setting before the excursions

A central city room, a delta lodge and an island resort offer different advantages. Compare where you will eat and how each outing starts before choosing the address.

  1. Saigon Opera House beyond a flowering central garden 1

    Ho Chi Minh City

    3 nights

Architecture, cafés and a choice of neighbourhood meals

Around Dong Khoi, a central room makes the Opera House, cafés and Nguyen Hue convenient for short outings. It also suits travellers who want dinner outside the hotel without planning a separate evening transfer. Cholon and Cu Chi remain excursions from this base. If traffic noise affects your sleep, ask about the assigned room’s position rather than judging quietness from the lobby photographs.

  2. Binh Thuy house green shutters and white staircase 2

    Can Tho

    3 nights

An early market outing and a contrasting house or garden day

Stay near Ninh Kieu for waterfront walks and city meals, or choose a garden property when time at the lodge matters. Can Tho Ecolodge’s Junior Deluxe is a 38 m² King room for two; its rural setting means arranging the market transport from that property. The distinction is useful for companions: one may enjoy an early boat trip while the other wants breakfast and a slower morning at the hotel.

  3. Khem beach sand and sea-facing resort buildings 3

    Phu Quoc

    3 nights

West-coast stays, island meals and southern cable trips

The Duong Dong and Long Beach side suits independent dinners and a beach-led stay. A southern hotel is convenient for Sunset Town; a northern property makes more sense when its own facilities are the attraction. La Veranda’s Premier Garden category offers 46 m², a double or twin arrangement and space for two adults with one child. Its garden setting is a room choice, not a promise of a sea view.

Ten days from city arrival to island departure

The moving days leave room for a meal and a short introduction. Save the longer visits for the full days that follow.

1 Day 1 Arrive, settle in and walk towards the river

At Tan Son Nhat, collect your cases before meeting the hotel driver or using the airport’s designated taxi pickup. Vietnam Airlines Group domestic services, including Pacific and VASCO, use T3; follow your own flight’s terminal instruction for other carriers and international arrivals. Give the driver the hotel entrance, not just its neighbourhood. If a morning arrival precedes room access, agree luggage storage and go for a nearby meal. Banh mi is a filled baguette, often with pâté, meat, pickles and herbs; com tam is broken rice with grilled pork and accompaniments. Either can make a straightforward first lunch without turning arrival into a food tour. Ask about fillings when ingredients matter. After a rest, begin at the Opera House exterior and head towards Nguyen Hue for a short walk in the direction of Bach Dang waterfront. Turn back for dinner when the party has had enough heat and traffic. A late flight simply reduces this first walk; tomorrow still carries the main historical visit.

  • Bags and the correct terminal
  • A meal before any long walk
  • Opera House exterior and Nguyen Hue

Base: Ho Chi Minh City

2 Day 2 Palace rooms, the Post Office and a café upstairs

Start at the Independence Palace’s main gate, 135 Nam Ky Khoi Nghia. Its published visiting hours are 07:00–18:00. Choose between the palace-only and combined exhibition products before entering; the lower ticket is not the same purchase. Give the rooms and historical displays the morning, rather than rushing through to fit several museums before lunch. Eat nearby, then walk or take a short taxi ride to the Central Post Office at 2 Cong Xa Paris, opposite the cathedral. Treat the cathedral as an exterior stop unless a visitor entrance is available that day. Continue along Dong Khoi towards the Opera House, then make 42 Nguyen Hue the café option. The building contains individual businesses in a converted apartment block: choose one that is open and suitable for your party. Finish with a return to the hotel and a break before dinner.

  • 135 Nam Ky Khoi Nghia palace gate
  • Post Office and cathedral exterior
  • Choose a café at 42 Nguyen Hue

Base: Ho Chi Minh City

3 Day 3 Thien Hau and Binh Tay, or a Cu Chi boat day

For Cholon, arrange a car from the hotel to Thien Hau, then a separate ride or locally chosen walk to Binh Tay market. Keep the visit focused on the temple and the market’s working streets, leaving traders room to carry on. Have lunch in the neighbourhood—a noodle bowl or a rice meal—before taking the car back to the city hotel. This is a different urban setting from yesterday’s central walk, and a reasonable afternoon for rest or another nearby café. If Cu Chi is the stronger interest, replace Cholon with Les Rives’ morning speedboat programme. Its published sequence begins with 07:00 pickup, a 07:20 departure from Bach Dang and arrival at the site around 08:40. Lunch is at 11:00, followed by the return sailing at 11:30 and arrival at Bach Dang around 13:00; the hotel transfer follows. Collection applies to the operator’s listed central wards. Outside them, arrange the journey to Saigon Water Bus Station. The underground passages are optional if enclosed spaces are uncomfortable. Tell the operator about dietary needs before the trip, then spend the final city evening preparing the cases for tomorrow.

  • A temple and working market in Cholon
  • Cu Chi replaces the neighbourhood day
  • Dinner and packing at the same hotel

Base: Ho Chi Minh City

4 Day 4 Travel to Can Tho, then stroll along Ninh Kieu

Have breakfast, check out and take all your bags on the road journey to Can Tho. A private transfer can run between the two hotel entrances. If choosing Victoria’s package shuttle instead, get its G8 Center Pasteur Hotel meeting address with the reservation and reach it before the 09:00 departure. The package and third-night arrangements are explained in the connections section. At the Can Tho property, check in or leave the bags by agreement if the room is not ready. Have lunch before adding sightseeing. From a city hotel, a short outing along Hai Ba Trung and Ninh Kieu waterfront gives an introduction to the riverfront; from a countryside lodge, book the car into town and its return rather than expecting a walk from the room. Choose dinner near the waterfront or at the property. Before bed, save tomorrow’s market joining point and arrange an early snack or breakfast box, because the selected boat programme does not include a meal.

  • Check out with the main cases
  • Lunch and a waterfront introduction
  • An early meal arranged for tomorrow

Base: Can Tho

5 Day 5 Join Cai Rang at dawn, then take a slower afternoon

Victoria’s named Cai Rang cruise starts at 06:00 and lasts approximately 2.5–3 hours. Get the exact boarding point and return point in writing, and arrange the taxi from your own hotel if needed. Eat something before leaving. On the river, look for produce displayed on poles and the exchange between wholesale boats. The working market changes from morning to morning; its appeal is the trade you can observe, not a guaranteed crowd. The published programme also lists rice-product and bamboo-craft stops; ask which stops your reservation includes. Water, guide assistance and sightseeing fees are included, while meals are extra. After disembarking, have breakfast or an early lunch and return to the same hotel by the arranged ride. Rest at the garden property or spend the afternoon in a city café. If you are using the hotel package’s included outing, follow that reservation’s programme instead of buying the standalone cruise again.

  • 06:00 joining for the selected cruise
  • Wholesale produce and craft stops
  • A meal after the boat and time to rest

Base: Can Tho

6 Day 6 Binh Thuy’s courtyard and family house

After breakfast, take a taxi or booked car to Binh Thuy’s historic house at 144 Bui Huu Nghia. The tourism listing displays 08:00–16:00; check admission for your visit and agree where the driver will wait or collect you. Look at the curved stairways and raised floor before moving into the house. The tiled courtyard, shutters and ancestral altar reward a closer look than a quick photograph of the facade. The stairs make the entrance an important question for anyone with restricted mobility. Return for lunch, then leave the afternoon for the hotel or a small city outing. Con Son is an alternative to this house day, not an extra commitment squeezed before it: Victoria lists a four-hour programme with fish-farm, orchard, cake and local demonstration interests. Book its starting point, boat arrangements and return ride together. Meals are excluded, so arrange food after the excursion. For either choice, finish at the same Can Tho hotel, have dinner and pack for the next day’s port transfer.

  • 144 Bui Huu Nghia and the curved stairs
  • House details before lunch
  • Con Son as a separate four-hour alternative

Base: Can Tho

7 Day 7 Drive to Rach Gia and sail to Bai Vong

Breakfast and checkout come first: all cases travel with you today. Ask the car company to set pickup from your Can Tho hotel so you can reach Rach Gia’s boarding port at 40 Nguyen Cong Tru before the ferry’s reporting deadline. For a 13:00 ticket, be there no later than 12:15. Buy or eat lunch before reporting, or bring food for the journey; allow time for the party’s bags and boarding rather than treating departure time as arrival time at the port. Phu Quoc Express publishes an approximately 2.5-hour crossing to Bai Vong. Keep the ticket and passenger identification ready, and follow the crew’s luggage instructions. At Bai Vong, collect the cases and meet the separately booked car to your island hotel. Check in, or agree storage if necessary, then choose a simple late meal or dinner at the property. Keep this first island evening local.

  • Main bags travel with the car and ferry
  • 12:15 reporting for the 13:00 example
  • Bai Vong pickup and a local dinner

Base: Phu Quoc

8 Day 8 A beach morning and seafood noodles in Duong Dong

Have breakfast at the property and spend the morning on its beach or by the pool. Let local conditions and the party’s preferences decide whether to swim; the dry-season choice does not make every beach safe on every day. Have lunch before the hottest part of the afternoon and return to the room for a break. Later, take a taxi to Duong Dong for Dinh Cau’s harbour setting, then make dinner the main food interest. Bun quay is a rice-noodle bowl with seafood, herbs and a sauce you season yourself with chilli, fish sauce, sugar and citrus. Kien Xay at 28 Bach Dang is the named option in the national tourism food guide. Ask about the actual seafood ingredients if you need an alternative. Browse the night market if you still want another short walk, then return to the hotel. Guests staying in the north or south should arrange that taxi back; Duong Dong dinner does not imply a nearby room.

  • Breakfast and time at the property
  • Dinh Cau and 28 Bach Dang
  • A taxi back after the market

Base: Phu Quoc

9 Day 9 Hon Thom by cable, with time for the return

Arrange a car from your hotel to Anh Duong station on Sorrento in Sunset Town, and agree the pickup after the return cable ride. Have breakfast before leaving. The operating image effective from 15 March 2026 lists cable windows of 09:30–11:30, 13:30–14:00 and 15:30–17:30; check the intended date’s hours before the driver sets off. Aim to cross in the morning, keeping the email QR ticket available for the return. Choose what to do on Hon Thom according to the party: the standard product includes Exotica and Aquatopia once that day, while the buffet product adds a meal at Mango restaurant. Lunch is still a separate purchase on a standard ticket. Bring swimwear and a dry change if using the water park. The published park hours finish at 16:45, and the beach at 16:30. Plan an afternoon cable return within the final window, then meet the car for the hotel and dinner. A hotel beach day is a straightforward replacement if the cable outing does not appeal; it leaves the route’s rooms unchanged.

  • Anh Duong station in Sunset Town
  • Select parks and lunch for the party
  • Afternoon return and the hotel car

Base: Phu Quoc

10 Day 10 Collect the bags and depart from Phu Quoc

Work backwards from the flight: Sun Airport recommends arrival at least two hours before a domestic departure or three before an international one. Ask the driver to allow the journey from your particular hotel as well as that airport time. At Phu Quoc Airport, the published taxi guidance places departure drop-off on Level 2; use the entrance and check-in area for your actual flight. For an early departure, arrange breakfast or a packed option, check out and take the cases straight to the car. With a later flight, agree storage and the time to retrieve every bag, then have lunch near the property. Continued room use or a shower after checkout needs a separate agreement. Finish any swim early enough to dry and pack wet clothing before collection. This is the departure day, so choose a nearby meal rather than an excursion that creates another boat connection before the flight.

  • Two-hour domestic or three-hour international arrival target
  • Storage and retrieval agreed if needed
  • All cases collected before the airport ride

Base: Phu Quoc

Two moves between the three bases

Reserve the transfer between the actual properties, including any ride to a shared-service meeting point.

2 transfers

  1. Ho Chi Minh City Can Tho

Transfer Travel time: Hotel-to-hotel car or a shared road service

For an uncomplicated move, quote a private car from your Saigon hotel to the Can Tho property with the party and luggage included. Vu Linh also offers the city-pair route. Its published offices include 450 Cao Thang extension in Ho Chi Minh City and E11 Street 8 in Can Tho; your ticket’s pickup and drop-off points control the journey, followed by a taxi to the hotel where needed. Its luggage allowance is one medium case measuring 48 × 28 × 69 cm and one carry bag; ask about larger cases before booking. Victoria’s Mekong Slow Living Extension is a different purchase: VND 12,580,000 for two nights and two guests, including breakfast and a join-in market outing for two. Its shuttle leaves G8 Center Pasteur Hotel at 09:00, with the reverse resort departure at 14:00. This route requires a third Can Tho night and then onward travel to Rach Gia. Ask for the full three-night price, whether you can use just the inbound shuttle, and which package benefits extend to the extra night.

  2. Can Tho Phu Quoc

Ferry Travel time: Mainland car, port reporting, about 2.5 hours at sea, then island car

Use Phu Quoc Express from Rach Gia to Bai Vong. Its October 2026 reference schedule lists a 13:00 sailing on every date; book the selected date and follow the issued ticket. The operator requires at least 45 minutes for reporting. Give the Can Tho car supplier the boarding address, 40 Nguyen Cong Tru, and the resulting 12:15 arrival deadline so it can quote the pickup from your property. Nguyen Duy Travel offers this road transfer, but its published tariff is round trip: request a one-way price covering the actual party, bags, tolls and tax. Book the Bai Vong-to-hotel car separately, using the ferry arrival and passenger contact details. Check the sailing before leaving Can Tho and agree what happens to both transfers and the first island room if it is canceled. If you prefer flying, substitute this whole connection only when the airline booking confirms a VCA–PQC journey with no stop on your date. Include transport to Can Tho Airport, the flight’s baggage allowance and the Phu Quoc arrival pickup in that alternative.

Booking tips

  • Match ferry passenger details to the identification you will carry, and ask the carrier about children’s documents and large cases before payment.
  • Send dietary requests ahead of the Cu Chi lunch or any hosted excursion. A noodle dish with seafood is not an automatic substitute for a vegetarian meal.
  • Keep the Hon Thom QR ticket accessible offline. The paid ticket cannot be changed to another date or type; cancellation carries the full fee, while the operator lists a separate refund exception for payment errors.

Questions that change the trip

Can I give the island a fourth night?

Yes: retain three Saigon nights, reduce Can Tho to two and use four on Phu Quoc. Arrive in the delta on day 4, visit Cai Rang on day 5 and cross to the island on day 6. This removes the full Binh Thuy or Con Son day, rather than asking an early market outing to carry both interests. Departure remains day 10.

What should a family check in the room categories?

At Can Tho Ecolodge, the Family Connecting category holds four, with one double bed, two twins and two bathrooms. La Veranda’s Premier Garden allows two adults and one child, so a four-person party needs another suitable arrangement. Give each hotel the children’s ages and ask for the actual beds and rate; an activity’s child ticket rule does not establish hotel occupancy.

How are child tickets different on the ferry and cable?

Phu Quoc Express publishes a child fare for ages 6–11 and free travel below six when sharing an adult’s seat. Hon Thom uses height: its standard ticket is VND 700,000 for 1–1.4 m and free below 1 m, with the higher category above 1.4 m. Check the carrier’s required age evidence and the attraction’s measurement with the reservation, rather than using one definition of child throughout the holiday.

What belongs in the day bag for Cai Rang?

Take the essentials you need on the boat, with rain protection for valuables and the food arranged before departure. Leave the large cases at the hotel because you return to the same room that day. Every case travels with you when you leave Can Tho on day 7.

Can I avoid the Cu Chi underground passages?

The Les Rives product allows guests to leave out the tunnel entry and optional firing-range purchase. Choose the site’s above-ground interpretation with the guide if enclosed passages are unsuitable. Tell the operator before booking when mobility or enclosed spaces are a concern, so it can discuss the route rather than treating participation as compulsory.

Is the Rach Gia ticket office the ferry pier?

Use 40 Nguyen Cong Tru for boarding. Phu Quoc Express lists its Rach Gia ticket office at A1–C22A, a separate address; buying or collecting a ticket there does not put you at the boat. Send the boarding pin to the driver, and ask the carrier where to collect any documents that must be obtained before reporting.
