Five bases, thirteen nights and two flights

Start with the capital, move into limestone countryside, spend a day among the bay islands, then continue to a trading town and the southern metropolis. This is an introduction for someone who enjoys changing surroundings. It leaves two full sightseeing days in each city and in Hoi An, with one full outing in Ninh Binh and one on Ha Long Bay. Arrival afternoons are smaller, and both flight days end with dinner near the hotel.

Book three nights in Hanoi, two in Ninh Binh, two in Ha Long, three in Hoi An and three in Ho Chi Minh City: thirteen hotel nights altogether. Day 14 is departure. Both Ha Long nights are ashore; this plan buys a day cruise rather than overnight accommodation aboard.

The price of this variety is four hotel changes. Two involve flights, with road journeys at both ends. If packing every few days sounds tiring, remove a stop and distribute its nights among the others before buying transport. The itinerary below deliberately keeps mountain trekking, island stays and a Mekong overnight cruise outside the fortnight, so the listed full days remain usable.

The capital’s layers of history

Thang Long Citadel gives Hanoi a historical anchor before the guild streets. Its grounds tell a different story from the city’s shopfronts and lakeside life; leave the rest of that day for a meal, rest and an optional puppet performance.

Temples among inland limestone

Hoa Lu’s former royal grounds and Bich Dong’s mountainside pagoda make a worthwhile countryside visit without a boat. The upper pagoda tiers involve stairs, while the lower approach lets companions choose a shorter visit.

A bay day with a choice of effort

The Ambassador programme includes cave and island stops as well as time aboard. Sung Sot has uneven paths and stairs; Titov’s panorama requires a climb. Discuss a suitable alternative with the crew if either outing is too demanding.

Inside a trading town

Hoi An’s houses, assembly halls and museums reveal more than its lantern-lit streets. Choose the ticketed interiors that interest you rather than treating all the buildings as a single attraction; their trading history gives the town walk its substance.

A meal you help prepare

Red Bridge links a market visit, river journey, herb garden and cooking lesson, ending with lunch. This gives one Hoi An morning a clear purpose beyond sightseeing and introduces ingredients you can recognise at later meals.

Cholon’s working streets

Binh Tay’s wholesale market and Thien Hau’s devotional spaces introduce another side of Ho Chi Minh City. Give them a separate day with a car journey from the centre, leaving time to browse and eat rather than rushing through between monuments.

Best for

  • A first visit combining northern scenery, central heritage and southern city life
  • Travellers who prefer several contrasting bases and can manage their bags between them

Think twice if

A slow single-region holiday, a dedicated trek or a national journey without flights

StartBooker answer

What is a realistic two-week route for a first Vietnam visit?

A first fortnight can link Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Ha Long, Hoi An and Ho Chi Minh City in fourteen days and thirteen hotel nights. This route combines city walks, countryside temples, a separately booked bay day cruise and a cooking class. It suits travellers who want regional variety and accept four hotel moves. The longest change runs from Ha Long by road to Hanoi airport, then flies to Da Nang for Hoi An. Ninh Binh has a land-based day ready if a public boat route cannot be confirmed.

Ha Long cruise format
The Ha Long stop uses a mainland hotel and a separate day cruise, with no cabin night.
Road drop-off points
Cat Ba Express lists Tam Coc pickup and separate Bai Chay and Tuan Chau drop-offs for its Ninh Binh–Ha Long bus.
Hoi An air gateway
Hoi An’s regional flight gateway is Da Nang.

Where to sleep along the route

Choose each room for the evenings and local journeys you will use. These five map markers locate the bases; your hotel entrance and transport meeting points come from the reservations.

  1. Hanoi Opera House facade with its red national flag 1

    Hanoi

    3 nights

    Capital history and guild streets

Hoan Kiem puts lakeside evenings and the Old Quarter close at hand. A West Lake room offers a different waterfront setting, but the central visits need road journeys. For this short opening stay, weigh independent meals on foot against the hotel facilities you want to use between outings.

Watch out: Check whether a street-facing bedroom suits your sleep; the Old Quarter remains a working neighbourhood.

  2. Ngo Dong watercourse through golden Tam Coc fields 2

    Ninh Binh

    2 nights

    Limestone valleys and countryside temples

Tam Coc is a useful countryside base for meals and the early onward bus. A Trang An-side property places you among a different set of valleys, while the railway city offers urban services. Choose a hotel that can arrange the road outing on day 5 and the ride to your Tam Coc departure point.

Watch out: A remote room needs a plan for dinner and the early morning journey to Tam Coc.

  3. Wooded limestone towers rising from Ha Long water 3

    Ha Long

    2 nights

Island scenery from a mainland base

Use Bai Chay for this hotel-and-day-cruise plan. Its mainland accommodation and restaurants make it possible to keep the same room before and after the boat outing. Ha Long International Cruise Port is the day’s destination; a hotel on Tuan Chau would add a road journey to this particular programme.

Watch out: Choose the hotel entrance as well as its area: luggage and the next airport car need road access.

    3 nights

Merchant interiors and a cooking morning

A town-edge room makes the heritage day and independent dinners straightforward. An Bang suits beach afternoons, while a rural property provides a different setting between visits. With only two full days here, a room far from town trades some spontaneous evening walks for hotel time and taxi rides.

Watch out: A beach or rural hotel needs a separate road ride after the class returns to central Hoi An.

  5. Trees and flowers before Ho Chi Minh City’s Opera House 5

    Ho Chi Minh City

    3 nights

    Central architecture and Cholon

The Dong Khoi and Nguyen Hue side of the centre suits the palace day and evening walks around the Opera House. You can reach Cholon by car on the following day. A larger apartment elsewhere may suit a household, but compare its daily transport with the space you will actually use.

Watch out: Cholon is a separate road outing from this central base, rather than an extension of the evening stroll.

The fourteen days, including the moving days

Each day ends at its named hotel base, apart from the final departure. The two-night countryside and bay stays each provide one complete outing between arrival and onward travel.

1 Day 1 Arrive in Hanoi and walk beside Hoan Kiem

After collecting your bags at Noi Bai, meet your arranged driver or use an airport taxi for the hotel. Bus 86 is a cheaper alternative at VND 50,000 per person, with Hanoi Railway Station as its city endpoint; allow for the ride from your chosen stop to the room. Keep the hotel address accessible to the driver. If you arrive before check-in, arrange bag storage before leaving anything at reception. An early arrival can hold a gentle Hoan Kiem walk: follow the shore past the red Huc Bridge and look towards Turtle Tower, then stop for dinner near the lake. Entering Ngoc Son Temple is a separate visit; seeing the bridge from the shore does not require you to do it today. After a late flight, eat close to the hotel and sleep.

  • Airport to hotel, with bags
  • An unhurried lakeside introduction

Base: Hanoi

2 Day 2 Thang Long Citadel, then an optional puppet show

Take a taxi to the Thang Long Citadel visitor entrance at 19C Hoang Dieu. Spend the morning in its grounds and exhibitions, then stop for lunch rather than adding another major historical collection. The published adult admission is VND 100,000; archaeological remains and successive royal and modern uses give the site more depth than a quick photograph at a gate. Return to the hotel for a break. If you want an evening performance, reserve Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre at 57B Dinh Tien Hoang and travel there for the booked show. The performance lasts about fifty minutes and is in Vietnamese; a foreign-language audio guide is a separate purchase. Choose dinner before or after according to the performance time, then return to your room.

  • The 19C Hoang Dieu visitor gate
  • An evening water-puppet performance

Base: Hanoi

3 Day 3 Guild streets, lunch and a Hanoi cafe

Use this day for the Old Quarter north of Hoan Kiem. Start on Hang Gai for fabric shops, continue to Hang Bac’s jewellery trade and Ma May’s old-house streetscape, stopping to look rather than trying to cover every guild street. Take a seat for pho noodle soup or bun cha, grilled pork with rice noodles, when hungry, and stop at a cafe during the hottest or wettest part of the afternoon. Return towards the lake when you have had enough walking. Ta Hien and the Luong Ngoc Quyen corner offer a livelier evening option if that appeals; a lakeside meal is a different choice. You need not stay out late before tomorrow’s road journey. Leave the room with a small bag for the day and pack the main suitcase when you get back.

  • A connected group of trading streets
  • Food and cafe time between walks

Base: Hanoi

4 Day 4 Travel inland and settle into Tam Coc

Have breakfast, check out and take your bags to the pickup specified on the Hanoi–Ninh Binh booking. The service and destination choices are described in the transport section below. At the receiving point, meet the hotel shuttle you arranged or take a taxi to the property; a Tam Coc drop is not the entrance to every countryside hotel. Eat lunch after the journey and settle in before setting out again. Keep the afternoon local: walk through Tam Coc’s village streets towards the boat-pier area to orient yourself, then return for a rest. This is a look at the village, not an assumed boat departure. Agree tomorrow’s road outing with the hotel and choose where to eat dinner, especially if the property is away from the main restaurant streets.

  • Hotel arrival after the road service
  • A small village walk and dinner plan

Base: Ninh Binh

5 Day 5 A countryside day with temples or an available boat route

Arrange a car for Hoa Lu’s ancient-capital temples in the morning, lunch near Tam Coc and Bich Dong Pagoda afterwards, returning to your hotel for dinner. Bich Dong’s upper tiers require stairs; companions can choose the lower visit. If everyone wants a climb instead, replace the pagoda afternoon with Hang Mua rather than adding both. Its steep ascent deserves time and appropriate shoes. For a water-focused day, ask the ticket office which public route can run on your date before replacing the land plan. The Board’s 17 September 2026 flood notice suspended Trang An and Van Long visits and shortened Tam Coc to Hang Ca and the entrance of Hang Hai, with a return to the pier. It later reported a hosted Trang An boat visit on 1 October; that does not establish ordinary public routes or restoration of the other trips. Book an accepted outing, leave lunch flexible around its return and use the temple day if it cannot be arranged.

  • A workable Hoa Lu–lunch–Bich Dong road day
  • A boat choice only after public-route confirmation

Base: Ninh Binh

6 Day 6 An early road journey to the bay hotel

Arrange breakfast or a packed meal before the early Tam Coc departure, check out and bring your bags to the joining point. After the bus reaches Bai Chay, take the last road leg to your hotel. If the room is not ready, agree where to leave bags and go for lunch. Keep the afternoon for recovery and a nearby waterfront walk. Choose a restaurant you can reach from the property and return for an early evening. Pack the small bag for tomorrow’s bay day and arrange the hotel-to-port car in both directions. This arrival afternoon is useful breathing space after two countryside nights; it does not need another excursion.

  • Breakfast and bags before the early bus
  • A mainland afternoon before the cruise

Base: Ha Long

7 Day 7 Ambassador’s bay day, returning to your hotel

Leave the main suitcases in your hotel room and take a day bag to Ha Long International Cruise Port in Bai Chay. The operator’s updated 14 September 2026 programme gives check-in from 08:15 to 09:30 at the first-floor Ambassador Lounge in the terminal, followed by transfer to Cruise II. Arrange your hotel car for the time assigned to your booking. The itinerary includes Luon, Sung Sot and Titov, with a light breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea. The published return is 16:00–16:30 at the same port. Meet the return car, go back to your room and choose a simple dinner. Keep tomorrow’s airport transfer separate from this boat day.

  • First-floor lounge check-in
  • Lunch aboard and a road ride back to the same room

Base: Ha Long

8 Day 8 Ha Long to Hanoi airport, then Hoi An

Check out after breakfast and leave Ha Long by a pre-booked private car to Noi Bai. Choose an afternoon or later Hanoi–Da Nang flight and have the provider work backwards from an airport arrival at least two hours before a Vietnam Airlines departure, adding a road-traffic margin to its hotel pickup estimate. A flight too early for that complete road journey is a poor fit for this route. Carry documents and medication with you, hand over the checked bags at the correct domestic terminal and fly to Da Nang. Collect luggage there and meet the driver booked for your Hoi An hotel, giving the actual property entrance rather than only a beach or village name. The airport–Ancient Town drive is about fifty minutes; a hotel elsewhere changes that last leg. Check in and eat near the room. Leave the town’s ticketed interiors for tomorrow.

  • Morning private car and an afternoon-or-later flight
  • Da Nang baggage collection and Hoi An road arrival

Base: Hoi An

9 Day 9 Walk through Hoi An’s trading history

Start near the Japanese Bridge at the western end of the Ancient Town and walk east along Tran Phu. Use the heritage ticket for the interiors you chose, such as Phuc Kien Assembly Hall or a museum, then continue towards the market for lunch. Follow Nguyen Thai Hoc and the Bach Dang riverfront back through town, taking breaks rather than treating every ticket punch as a target for the day. Reaching Out’s teahouse at 131 Tran Phu is an optional quieter stop for tea or coffee. Follow the staff’s lead and keep conversation low. Return to the hotel before another dinner walk, or take a taxi back to a beach or rural base.

  • Choose interiors along a west-to-east walk
  • Lunch and a quieter tea stop

Base: Hoi An

10 Day 10 Red Bridge’s market, cooking and lunch morning

Reach Hai Cafe at 98 Nguyen Thai Hoc for the 08:15 Red Bridge half-day meeting. From a beach or countryside hotel, book the town ride the night before. The programme joins the market, a river boat, herb garden and cooking lesson before lunch, so you do not need a second meal reservation during it. The programme finishes at 13:00 and includes the transfer back to central Hoi An. Take a separate taxi to your own hotel if it is elsewhere, then leave the afternoon for rest or the coast. Red Bridge also offers pool use after the class; if you stay for it, agree a later return instead of assuming the shared transfer waits. Dry off and collect your belongings before leaving. Keep this last Hoi An evening easy so you can pack for the southbound flight.

  • Hai Cafe, 98 Nguyen Thai Hoc, at 08:15
  • Central-town return followed by your hotel’s last leg

Base: Hoi An

11 Day 11 Fly south and finish at your city hotel

Have breakfast and check out before the booked Hoi An–Da Nang airport car. Fly nonstop to Ho Chi Minh City, keeping the baggage allowance and flight documents at hand. Vietnam Airlines Group domestic flights arrive at T3; for other carriers, follow the airline’s terminal instruction. Send the terminal and flight number to the driver rather than arranging a meeting only at “Saigon airport”. After collecting bags, use the arranged pickup or an airport taxi to the hotel. Check in and go for a short meal near the room. If you have energy, look at the Opera House exterior and the central streets; tomorrow has the longer architecture walk. After a delayed flight, dinner and sleep are enough.

  • Nonstop flight and the correct terminal pickup
  • A modest first southern evening

Base: Ho Chi Minh City

12 Day 12 The palace and central Saigon on foot

Enter Independence Palace through the main ticket gate at 135 Nam Ky Khoi Nghia. Visit in the morning, allowing time for rooms and interpretation. Choose palace-only admission or the exhibition combination before paying; both products are priced below. The palace’s visitor hours are 07:00–18:00, so this plan does not depend on a narrow afternoon slot. After lunch, return to the hotel for a break if it is hot. Walk along Dong Khoi towards the Opera House, then cross towards Nguyen Hue for its broad pedestrian boulevard. For a cafe stop with a different setting, 42 Nguyen Hue is a repurposed apartment building; choose a business that is open rather than expecting the whole building to be one attraction. Eat dinner in the centre and return to your hotel.

  • The main gate at 135 Nam Ky Khoi Nghia
  • Dong Khoi, the Opera House and Nguyen Hue

Base: Ho Chi Minh City

13 Day 13 Cholon’s market and Thien Hau

Take a taxi from the hotel to Binh Tay Market to start the morning in Cholon. Browse its working wholesale streets and stalls, then make your way to Thien Hau Pagoda; take another short taxi ride if walking between interests is tiring or the weather is poor. The temple is a place of devotion, so give worshippers room and follow the rules on site. Stop for lunch in the neighbourhood. Com tam is one southern option: broken rice commonly served with grilled pork and other toppings. Keep purchases manageable in your day bag, then return to the central hotel by taxi. A shower, rest and nearby dinner make a comfortable last evening; finish packing after it instead of adding a late excursion before departure.

  • A taxi to the Cholon market
  • Temple, lunch and a city-hotel return

Base: Ho Chi Minh City

14 Day 14 Collect the bags and leave for the airport

Keep the final morning close to the hotel, with breakfast and checkout. If your flight is late, arrange storage for the bags and agree the collection time before going out. Take a short nearby meal or cafe break, then return to reception, collect everything and meet the booked airport vehicle. Tell the driver the departing terminal shown by the airline; an international departure is not the domestic terminal used on day 11. Allow the airline’s check-in time plus the road margin recommended for that departure. Keep passports, medication and flight documents in your carry-on.

  • Checkout, agreed storage and collection
  • The departure terminal on your airline documents

The four changes of base

4 transfers

  1. Hanoi Ninh Binh

Bus Travel time: About two hours by road, plus the hotel last mile

Cat Ba Express lists a Hanoi office at 214 Tran Quang Khai and agreed Old Quarter pickups. Its Hanoi–Ninh Binh service takes about two hours, with city, Tam Coc and Trang An destination choices. Choose the receiving point for your hotel and arrange the onward car if needed. The listed service includes one standard suitcase and a small carry-on per passenger; ask about bulky purchases before travelling.

Booking note: Keep the pickup instruction and the destination name together on the booking.

  2. Ninh Binh Ha Long

Bus Travel time: About three hours from Tam Coc to the Ha Long drop

The published Cat Ba Express service leaves Duc Tuan Restaurant or Tam Coc Boat Station at 07:00, from USD 15 per passenger. Bai Chay passengers are received in front of Muong Thanh Luxury; Tuan Chau has different cafe receiving points for its piers. Choose Bai Chay for this itinerary and arrange the hotel ride from the bus drop. A hotel outside Tam Coc also needs a car to the early joining point.

Booking note: Buy this as the day 6 road leg, with the cruise on day 7.

  3. Ha Long Hoi An

Flight Travel time: Private car to HAN, nonstop flight to DAD, then Hoi An road

Ask your hotel or a transfer provider for a Ha Long–Noi Bai private-car quote stating the hotel pickup, airport terminal, tolls and luggage capacity. Give the provider your proposed flight details and obtain its road estimate with a traffic allowance before choosing the departure. Add the nonstop Hanoi–Da Nang flight and the car to your Hoi An property; all three stages need to fit the same day.

Booking note: Set the flight after the complete airport arrival plan; do not use a cruise’s Hanoi city shuttle as an airport transfer.

  4. Hoi An Ho Chi Minh City

Flight Travel time: Hoi An road to DAD, nonstop flight to SGN, then the city hotel

Book the Hoi An–Da Nang airport car around the flight’s check-in requirement. Vietnam Airlines sells nonstop Da Nang–Ho Chi Minh City journeys as well as longer connecting options; select the nonstop itinerary for this day. Compare the final fare with the checked bags you need, and arrange the receiving car using the arrival terminal and flight number.

Booking note: The two road rides are separate from the flight fare unless your package expressly includes them.

Transport examples describe the published services; your travel date, pickup and final hotel determine the reservation.

Booking tips

  • Before paying for the rooms, fit the two domestic flights and the early northern buses to the same calendar. Then secure the bay outing and cooking class.
  • Send every hotel the named adults and children, their ages and the beds you need. A twin arrangement, connecting rooms and an extra bed solve different needs.
  • Explain mobility limits before paying for the boat day or choosing an upstairs room. Describe the stairs and transfers you can manage, rather than asking only whether a visit is accessible.
  • Keep the amendment and cancellation conditions with each booking. A changed flight can affect two airport cars and the first night at the receiving hotel.

An early cooking meeting and evening town interests can make a town-side room useful; a beach address changes those roads.

Questions that change the bookings

Can I replace the day cruise with a night aboard?

Yes, but redraw the Ha Long reservation before paying. One shore night on day 6 and one cabin night on day 7 would replace the two shore nights, keeping thirteen nights in the whole route. Choose an operator whose day 8 disembarkation and private airport transfer fit your flight. Bhaya’s cruise centre is on Tuan Chau, so its joining point differs from the Ambassador example. A two-cabin-night product needs another change to the calendar; do not simply add it to the existing hotel nights.

What if I land early and need to sleep immediately?

Bag storage lets you go out, but it does not give you a bedroom or shower. Request a paid early room and have the hotel confirm the access time. If you reserve the preceding night to guarantee a morning room, tell reception your arrival date and hour and obtain confirmation that the room will be held. That adds a fourteenth paid night to this itinerary’s thirteen; include it in the room budget.

What needs to stay in the small bag on moving days?

Keep the passports, flight documents and medication you need during the journey with you rather than in the suitcase going into the vehicle hold or airline baggage system. Put the next hotel address and driver contact on your phone in a form you can open offline. Check the airline’s carry-on allowance before packing fragile purchases; a souvenir collected late in the trip can change the baggage you need for the last flight.

Can Red Bridge adapt the meal for a vegetarian?

The half-day programme offers vegetarian substitutions. Tell the school when booking and explain the ingredients you avoid, rather than waiting until the market purchases have been made. Discuss allergies directly as well: a menu substitution and the handling of an allergen are different requests. Have the school accept the meal arrangement before paying, then remind the guide when you meet. This lets the kitchen prepare for you within the group lesson.

Which season should I compare first for the whole route?

March and April are useful starting points for this north–central–south journey. Northern mornings can still be cool, while the south is warm and Hoi An’s March–May period generally suits town visits. In autumn, comfortable Hanoi weather can coincide with central-coast rain: Hoi An’s destination guidance flags storms and wet days from October to January. Pack layers for the north and rain protection, and keep the bay operator’s instructions and any local flood notices in the daily plan.

What should happen if a flight changes before I travel?

Recheck the road pickups at both ends before retaining the old hotel arrival plan. On day 8, the Ha Long car, Noi Bai reporting time and Da Nang receiving driver all depend on the revised flight. On day 11, contact both the Hoi An driver and the Ho Chi Minh City hotel. If the replacement arrives late, move dinner near the room and leave the next day’s sightseeing intact. Keep transport contacts available offline so a changed arrival does not leave the hotel car waiting at the wrong time.
