Two cave days, royal landscapes and a trading-town finish

This route moves from a river village surrounded by limestone hills to an imperial capital, then to the old port of Hoi An. The journey contrasts a cavern reached by boat with royal grounds and a hands-on cooking class. It suits travellers wanting caves alongside architecture and food.

The calendar has three Phong Nha nights after days one to three, three Hue nights after days four to six, and three Hoi An nights after days seven to nine. Arrival and the two hotel moves leave two full activity days at every base; day ten is departure. In Phong Nha, use the river cave on the first day and choose either ordinary Paradise admission or a guided Nuoc Nut outing for the second. Hue separates the palace from a royal tomb or village programme, while Hoi An gives heritage walking and cooking their own days.

April is a useful month to compare first: it falls within the favourable periods described for all three destinations. Later summer brings more heat, making shaded breaks and early starts valuable. Phong Nha is generally wetter from October to December; Hue can be rainy from August into January, and Hoi An has rain and storms from October to January. The wetter-season decision and a practical substitute are covered in the questions below. Choose your cave dates before committing to the rest of the route if that visit is the main reason for travelling.

A river leading into limestone

The Son River makes the approach part of the visit. Beyond the cave mouth, the boat is paddled through the darker passages before you step onto dry walkways. Look at the changing shapes of the formations as the river gives way to chambers.

Paradise’s large dry chambers

Paradise offers a different view of the same karst landscape: a long wooden path through a dry cave with substantial formations. The forest and hillside above it make this an outing with walking as well as an underground visit.

The former royal capital

Hue’s palace grounds contain halls, pavilions and theatres from the Nguyen court. Give yourself time to distinguish ceremonial spaces from gardens and everyday royal surroundings, rather than treating the whole enclosure as one monumental gate.

Crafts in Thuy Bieu homes

The village programme introduces incense, joss-paper and paper-painting work alongside garden lanes and ancestral temples. The programme’s guide introduces the work inside these households and explains how it fits village life.

A merchant house and an assembly hall

Tan Ky’s timber structure and Phuc Kien’s community heritage reveal different sides of Hoi An’s former trading port. They reward looking inside: a street of yellow facades becomes more interesting when you understand what its buildings were used for.

Ingredients before recipes

The Red Bridge morning links market produce to the school’s herb garden and your own cooking. Making rice paper, preparing rolls and using local herbs gives a practical way to explore the food you have been ordering during the journey.

Best for

  • Travellers who want ordinary cave visits with one optional guided forest adventure
  • A regional journey mixing royal history, village crafts and Vietnamese cooking

StartBooker answer

What is a practical ten-day route from Phong Nha to Hue and Hoi An?

Spend three nights in Phong Nha, three in Hue and three in Hoi An. Arrive through Dong Hoi, then drive to your cave base. Pair the Son River boat visit with Paradise Cave or the guided Nuoc Nut day. Continue to Hue on a daytime train for the Imperial City and a tomb or Thuy Bieu village outing. Coastal rail brings you to Da Nang; a car completes the journey to Hoi An for merchant houses and cooking. Fly out of Da Nang on day ten.

River visit
Phong Nha Cave combines a boat approach, hand-rowed passages and dry walkways.
Dry-cave effort
Paradise’s electric cart leaves an uphill climb before the wooden cave path.
Guided adventure
Nuoc Nut is a day tour for participants aged twelve to seventy.
Village interest
Thuy Bieu’s booked programme includes cycling and household craft visits.
Merchant heritage
Hoi An’s smaller ticket covers the Bridge or Quan Cong and two other selected sites.

  1. Blue Phong Nha Cave boat on the Son River 1

    Phong Nha

    3 nights

River scenery, forested limestone and contrasting cave visits

Stay near Phong Nha’s Son River village for restaurants and convenient access to the boat-visit centre. A countryside property around Cu Nam gives you fields and quieter time at the accommodation, with more arranged drives into the village. Phong Nha Farmstay supplies bicycles and a periodic village shuttle for its own guests; ask for that day’s service when comparing a stay there. Give a tour company the full rural hotel address before assuming it is on the collection route.

  2. Ngo Mon gate terraces and roofs at Hue 2

    Hue

    3 nights

Royal courtyards, riverside streets and garden villages

The Le Loi side of central Hue suits riverside evenings and an easy meal after sightseeing. Staying nearer the citadel puts the royal enclosure closer, while still leaving a car journey for the outlying tombs. Thuy Bieu is a garden-village setting west of the centre: the lodge lunch on the day tour does not require moving your room there. Pick the hotel’s location for the evenings you want, then arrange the one excursion that goes farther afield.

  3. Basket-carrying flower seller in yellow-walled Hoi An 3

    Hoi An

    3 nights

Merchant buildings, market ingredients and town-to-coast afternoons

An Ancient Town address makes evening wandering straightforward and keeps the cooking meeting close. An Bang offers a beach setting; Cam Thanh and Tra Que provide countryside surroundings. Those choices add town rides, but can be worthwhile if you will use the afternoons at your property. Check where a driver can stop with bags when the accommodation sits inside the walking area, and retain that arrival point for the final airport pickup.

From the Son River to a final Hoi An lunch

The sightseeing days stay in one base. On hotel-change days, leave room for a meal, a short walk and the transfer itself.

1 Day 1 Reach your Phong Nha hotel from Dong Hoi

Send your flight or train details to the driver and agree the airport-arrivals or station meeting point before travelling. Collect all your bags, meet the car and continue west to the full Phong Nha hotel address. Dong Hoi is about 45 kilometres from Phong Nha; Oxalis publishes a seven-seat private-transfer option, with the price shown below. Give the provider the property name as well as the village. At the hotel, check in or ask for luggage storage if the room is still being prepared. Have a nearby lunch, or dinner if you arrive late. For a village stay, a short Son River walk is enough orientation for the first afternoon. The Villas is a named riverside option for a Western meal; Thang Nhung and Vung Hue are other local eating choices listed by Phong Nha Farmstay. Check what is serving when you arrive, then return to your accommodation. Rural guests can settle into the property and eat there instead of making another journey into town.

  • Meet the driver after collecting bags
  • Son River village orientation
  • A nearby meal before the first night

2 Day 2 Join the numbered boat for Phong Nha Cave

Have breakfast and walk or take your arranged ride to the Phong Nha cave visitor centre in town. Buy admission at the counter, then go to the pier on its left and obtain your boat number. Remember it: you need the same numbered boat for the return. The river journey takes roughly half an hour, with fields and limestone hills before the cave entrance. Inside, the engine stops and the boat is hand-rowed through the passages. The visit also includes the dry branches known as Hang Tien and Hang Cung Dinh, reached on composite walkways. Wear shoes suited to getting in and out of the boat and walking afterward. If boarding or balance is difficult, discuss that specific transition with the centre before buying. Allow about two and a half hours for the published visit, then find your boat and return to the centre. Have lunch in the village after landing. Keep the afternoon for the riverbank or your accommodation rather than a second major cave. A countryside guest should arrange the ride back from town; a village guest can walk back to the room.

  • The centre’s left-hand pier
  • Hand-rowing and dry cave walkways
  • Return on the same numbered boat

Base: Phong Nha

3 Day 3 Walk Paradise, or take the Nuoc Nut guided day

For Paradise, book a car from your hotel to the entrance at Km 16 on the western branch of the Ho Chi Minh Road. Agree where the driver waits, the return pickup and a lunch stop. The ordinary admission includes the electric cart for the 1.6-kilometre forest stage, followed by approximately 500 metres uphill to the cave. Inside, explore the one-kilometre wooden walkway and take time over the formations. Return through the entrance, meet the driver and eat before going back to your hotel. Choose Nuoc Nut instead if you want a guided forest-and-cave day. Eat early enough for the 07:00–07:30 collection from your confirmed Phong Nha hotel. At the Oxalis office, the guide briefs the group before the Commander Cave Museum visit and forest approach. Picnic lunch is included at the cave entrance. Helmets and headlamps are supplied for the underground section, with sandy banks and pools along the visit. Ask the guide about optional swimming if you would rather remain out of the water. The programme concludes around 17:00, followed by the operator’s transfer back to your hotel. Leave your main cases at the accommodation and take the day equipment described in the FAQ. Whichever outing you chose, eat dinner near your room and pack for the next morning’s departure.

  • Forest and uphill access at Paradise
  • Nuoc Nut as a complete alternative
  • Dinner and packing at the same hotel

4 Day 4 Take a daytime train from Dong Hoi to Hue

This plan uses a morning national train. The railway’s published table gives SE1 as a planning example: Dong Hoi at 07:33 and Hue at 10:30 on the same boarding day. Reserve the departure offered for your date before arranging the early car from Phong Nha. Eat breakfast or order something packed the night before, check out, load every bag and leave at the time agreed with the driver for the station journey and boarding margin. Keep identification and the ticket accessible rather than inside the main case. On arrival at Ga Hue, take a taxi or your booked car to the hotel. Arrange bag storage if it is too early to enter the room, then have lunch nearby. Once you are settled, use Le Loi for a gentle riverside walk: the street’s colonial buildings add a different layer to the city before tomorrow’s palace visit. Have dinner and return to the same hotel.

  • Early checkout with all bags
  • Dong Hoi–Hue on the same day
  • Le Loi after settling into the hotel

Base: Hue

5 Day 5 Enter the Imperial City through Ngo Mon

After breakfast, travel from the hotel to Ngo Mon, the principal visitor entrance to the Imperial City. Follow the site signs toward Thai Hoa, the ceremonial throne hall with its court in front. Continue to The Mieu and the Nine Dynastic Urns: the temple honours Nguyen rulers, while the bronze urns stand outside. If you want a longer circuit, use the site map to continue toward the Dien Tho residential area, once home to queen mothers. Follow current visitor signs for access and the exit, stopping for shade when needed. Leave the enclosure for lunch after the walk. Banh beo are small steamed rice cakes topped with shrimp, pork crackling and scallion oil; check ingredients when ordering. Return to your hotel for a break before the afternoon. Later, walk along Le Loi past the red buildings of Quoc Hoc and the art-deco frontage of La Residence. View the streetscape from outside, stop for a drink and choose dinner in central Hue before returning to your room.

  • Ngo Mon and Thai Hoa
  • The Mieu’s Nine Dynastic Urns
  • Le Loi’s colonial streetscape

Base: Hue

6 Day 6 Choose Tu Duc’s garden tomb or Thuy Bieu

Tu Duc is the suggested tomb for a slower morning among lakes and landscaped grounds. After breakfast, take the car you have booked from the hotel, agreeing both waiting time and the place to meet afterward. Walk through the garden and buildings at your own pace, then return with that driver for lunch in Hue and an afternoon rest. Minh Mang offers more ordered grounds, while Khai Dinh’s climbing platforms and mosaic interiors make a more stair-heavy alternative. Choose one setting that interests you. For a village morning instead, book Hue Ecolodge’s Thuy Bieu programme. Take a taxi or arranged car to the confirmed meeting point at Thien Mu Pagoda for 09:30. A one-way dragon boat takes the group toward the lodge; guided cycling then follows village gardens and ancestral temples. Craft-home visits introduce incense, joss paper and paper painting, followed by the programme’s herbal foot soak. Lunch starts at Hue Ecolodge at 12:30, which is the end of the listed morning programme rather than your hotel-arrival time. Eat there, then use the separately arranged taxi or car to return to your own hotel. Keep the afternoon easy and dinner local. Discuss the bike portion beforehand if cycling is unsuitable for your party.

  • One garden tomb with a waiting car
  • Thien Mu boat joining for the village alternative
  • Lodge lunch followed by your hotel transfer

Base: Hue

7 Day 7 Cross the coast by rail and settle into Hoi An

Reserve a morning Hue–Da Nang heritage service, then set the hotel-to-Ga Hue pickup from the time on that ticket. Have breakfast, check out and take all your cases. The approximately three-hour railway journey follows the coast around Hai Van and Lang Co, giving this hotel move a scenic middle section without a separate sightseeing detour. At Ga Da Nang, meet the driver booked to your actual Hoi An property. Agree a practical vehicle drop if the hotel is inside the pedestrian area. Have lunch after reaching the property; use its agreed storage if the room is not ready, then settle in and rest. An afternoon rail departure makes dinner the first meal after arrival instead. For the evening, enter the Ancient Town on foot or take a taxi from the beach or countryside. Keep to a short stretch of Bach Dang beside the Thu Bon River, then choose dinner in town. Mi Quang offers rice noodles with herbs, peanuts and a little broth, with the protein varying by kitchen. Walk back to a central hotel or take the return ride you arranged from town.

  • Breakfast, checkout and the coastal train
  • Ga Da Nang car pickup
  • Bach Dang and a noodle dinner

Base: Hoi An

8 Day 8 Walk between Hoi An’s merchant interiors

Begin after breakfast near the Japanese Covered Bridge. Buy the Ancient Town ticket for the Bridge and your two other chosen sites, then walk east along Tran Phu to Phuc Kien Assembly Hall at number 46. Take time over its architecture before continuing toward the market. Turn toward Nguyen Thai Hoc for Tan Ky house at number 101, where timber columns, partitions and the old merchant-house layout add an indoor contrast to the assembly hall. Follow the site’s entry directions and change the order if a chosen interior is not receiving visitors. Have lunch near the town centre; cao lau combines firm rice noodles, pork, sprouts and herbs. Return west along Bach Dang by the Thu Bon, then make your way to Reaching Out at 131 Tran Phu for a quiet tea or coffee. Let that be a seated break before going back to the hotel, on foot if nearby or by your arranged town-to-property ride. Return to town for dinner after resting if you are staying farther out. Keep your ticket stub with you: the visiting conditions allow use during your stay for up to three days, within the purchased site selection.

  • Bridge, Phuc Kien and Tan Ky
  • A riverbank return along Bach Dang
  • Quiet tea at 131 Tran Phu

Base: Hoi An

9 Day 9 Cook after the market and river journey

Leave your large bags at the hotel and travel to Hai Cafe, 98 Nguyen Thai Hoc, for the Red Bridge meeting at 08:15. Have a light breakfast beforehand. The welcome drink is followed by a guided market visit, where you learn about ingredients used later in the lesson. The school’s boat then takes about 25 minutes along the river to Red Bridge. Walk through the herb garden before the chefs demonstrate the dishes and you prepare them yourself. Lunch is included: eat the food prepared during the lesson and the additional dishes supplied by the school. The programme finishes around 13:00 at Red Bridge, after which the included transfer returns to central Hoi An. Walk or take a taxi from that drop to your own accommodation. If you want to stay longer at the school’s pool, agree the later return before the normal transfer leaves; towels and showers are supplied, so bring swimwear. Use the rest of the afternoon at your property, or take a modest beach walk if that is where you are staying. Go back to your room before dinner to check tomorrow’s car pickup and pack any craft purchases carefully.

  • Hai Cafe at 08:15
  • Market, herb garden and hands-on cooking
  • School finish before the town and hotel return

Base: Hoi An

10 Day 10 Collect the bags and fly from Da Nang

Confirm the car from the full hotel address to Da Nang airport. The drive from the Ancient Town is roughly fifty minutes as a starting estimate; a beach or rural property changes the route. Ask the driver to allow for traffic as well as the journey itself. Aim to reach the airport at least two hours before a domestic flight or three hours before an international flight, and follow any longer requirement from your airline. For an early departure, arrange breakfast and checkout before the pickup. With a later flight, check out on time, leave bags only under an agreed storage arrangement and eat near the hotel. Return to collect the cases before the car arrives. If you need a room or shower after checkout, book that extra use rather than assuming storage includes it. Da Nang uses T1 for domestic flights and T2 for international flights; check-in is on Level 2 of both. Give the driver your terminal, keep documents and delicate purchases handy, and complete the flight check-in.

  • Flight-based pickup from your property
  • Bag collection after checkout
  • T1 domestic or T2 international

Rail tickets and the station-to-hotel connections

Buy seats for the two station pairs, then reserve the cars that connect them to your rooms.

2 transfers

  1. Phong Nha Hue

Train Travel time: About three hours on the national train, plus both station transfers

The national railway gives the simpler Dong Hoi–Hue station pair for this plan. Choose the seat category and fare from the date search, entering each passenger’s full name and identification details. Keep the booking code with the ticket. A station-collection booking also requires valid identification; the railway asks for a child’s birth date when purchasing. The separate HQ1 tourist product uses Tho Loc on the Phong Nha side. Its current operator page lists 13:15 to 17:25, a four-hour-ten-minute example that leaves a later Hue arrival. Compare its regular-seat and VIP offers: the advertised tea and snack service belongs to the VIP description. Price the hotel–Tho Loc car separately, and reserve the Hue station taxi or car regardless of which railway you choose. For a party preferring one vehicle, Oxalis also publishes a private Hue–Phong Nha transfer. Compare that quote with the total of two station transfers and the rail seats; agree the exact hotels, luggage and meal stop for a direct drive.

  2. Hue Hoi An

Train Travel time: Approximately three hours Hue–Da Nang, followed by a car to Hoi An

Book Ga Hue to Ga Da Nang through the heritage service’s own date selector. Save the departure, seat category and passenger details, then arrange a separate Hue hotel pickup and Da Nang station meeting. The driver at Da Nang needs the hotel’s vehicle-access point as well as its name, especially for the walking area. Keep the medicines, documents and a small snack you need on the train in your hand bag, with the main cases ready for the station transfer. Ask about storage for unusually large bags before paying for the chosen vehicle and carriage. A private Hue–Hoi An car is another way to make this move; request a quote for your party and any stops, rather than treating those stops as part of a rail ticket.

Booking tips

  • Red Bridge requires full payment, then an email with your preferred date; wait for the school’s confirmation before reserving the other activity around it.
  • For Hue e-tickets, retain the phone number used at purchase so you can retrieve them. The official purchase guide says paid tickets are non-refundable.
  • Give the cooking school and guided cave operator dietary requirements before the visit. Red Bridge lists vegetarian replacements; ask separately about an allergy.
  • Online booking for the Nuoc Nut day closes at 19:00 the evening before. Contact the Oxalis team after that deadline to ask whether a place is still possible.

Cave effort, family tickets and a longer finish

Which activities can children join?

The cave tickets and guided tour use different rules. Phong Nha Cave exempts children below 1.3 metres from admission; Paradise lists VND 145,000 for heights 1.1–1.3 metres and free entry below 1.1 metres. Nuoc Nut’s published participation range is twelve to seventy years. At Red Bridge, children aged seven and above pay full price and may cook; those six and younger can accompany without cooking, with meals ordered separately. Hoi An’s heritage announcement exempts under-sixteens. Give each provider the actual ages and heights when calculating a family total.

What should I carry on the Nuoc Nut day?

Use quick-drying long trousers and a long-sleeved top, plus walking shoes with grip. The operator specifies a roughly twenty-litre day pack and supplies helmets, headlamps and gloves. If borrowing boots, check the available EU sizes 36–44 and bring the required socks and insoles. A shared dry box is provided, but organise your own essentials so they are easy to reach. Tell the guide about any balance, walking or water concern when booking; optional swimming is a separate participation choice.

How does a Reaching Out tea visit work?

Go for a quiet break rather than a lively conversation over coffee. Staff include people with speech and hearing impairments; follow their ordering process and keep the room peaceful. The menu includes pots of Vietnamese tea and coffee, with a three-tea tasting set listed at VND 155,000 if you want to compare flavours. Tea can be topped up with hot water. Regular hours are 08:00–20:00; ask about opening times for a holiday visit.

Can the village day work without cycling?

The advertised Thuy Bieu programme includes a guided bike ride. Ask the lodge whether it can arrange another way to reach the household visits and what that changes in the price and itinerary. Choose the tomb option if it better matches your party’s needs. For a traveller who mainly wants the village garden setting, an agreed visit or lunch is a different booking from assuming every element of the cycling tour can be reproduced by car.

How can I add a proper beach day in Hoi An?

The afternoons already provide a little coast or property time, but a full An Bang day needs an extension if you also want the complete town and cooking visits. Keep the existing Hoi An arrival and two activity days, add one hotel night and take the beach day before departure. That makes an eleven-day, ten-night holiday. Arrange transport from a town or countryside hotel to the beach and back, choose lunch there, and plan swimming around the conditions you find rather than a seasonal promise.

What is the useful fallback if rain changes the cave day?

Ask the cave centre or guided operator whether your specific route is running. If river access is unavailable, Paradise is only an alternative if its own road and visit are operating and the remaining walk suits you. Otherwise keep a day at the accommodation with meals nearby, rather than replacing one closed water activity with another unconfirmed one. If the caves are the essential reason for the trip, different dates may be a better choice. Agree changes with the activity provider, then check whether onward reservations can be adjusted.

Research approach: Park and activity operators were checked for approaches, prices, participation and included transfers. Railway products, monument tickets and local tourism information were reviewed alongside the three base coordinates. The plan was checked for nine hotel nights, meal breaks and the difference between a programme finish and the subsequent hotel journey.
