The northern plateau, with time to stay in Dong Van

Spend the opening night in Hanoi, the second in Ha Giang and the third and fourth in Dong Van. The three mountain days cover the northbound journey, a Ma Pi Leng and Meo Vac outing, and the drive back to Ha Giang. Keeping the same Dong Van room for two nights gives you an evening in the old quarter and a full day without moving your luggage.

This plan suits travellers who want someone else to drive while a guide explains the villages, food and buildings along the way. It follows the northern plateau roads out and back, rather than completing the longer circuit through Du Gia. The route ends in Ha Giang; arrange the next journey from there around your wider holiday.

Book it as a custom car tour. YESD offers a Hanoi-hotel start, separate driver and guide, and hotel alternatives to homestays. Ask for a single itinerary naming the stops, rooms, meal inclusions, admission and finish address below. There is no published price for this exact five-day allocation. Specify everyone in the party, the bags and the guide language before comparing quotes; vehicle size varies between the operator’s offers. If rain or a road closure changes the mountain programme, let the driver and guide rearrange stops instead of pushing on to meet a sightseeing list.

Quan Ba’s valleys and limestone peaks

At Heaven Gate above Quan Ba, the view introduces the plateau’s scale: cultivated valleys lie between steep limestone hills. Pause here before continuing through Tam Son, rather than treating every bend as another version of the same photograph.

The tight bends of Tham Ma

Beyond Yen Minh, Tham Ma is a distinctive winding climb towards the higher plateau. Let the driver stop at a suitable viewing place and take in the switchbacks from there. The journey continues to Sa Phin, so this remains a short landscape stop.

Details inside the Vuong Palace

In Sa Phin, look beyond the palace’s large outline. Stone, timber and terracotta sit alongside carved dragon, phoenix and bat motifs. A guide can use those details to explain the building, giving this stop a different purpose from the roadside panoramas.

Dong Van’s old quarter

The old quarter contains around forty houses dating from the late nineteenth century. Tiled roofs, thick walls and the market setting reward a walk at town level after the drive. Choose accommodation nearby if you want to go out for dinner on foot.

Ma Pi Leng above the Nho Que

The road towards Meo Vac follows the high gorge landscape above the Nho Que River. You can appreciate it from a roadside viewpoint without making the exposed Skywalk trail part of the day. Tell the guide whether you want short walks or a longer hike.

A plateau breakfast and lunch

Try Dong Van’s steamed rice rolls with egg, or buckwheat-flour cakes when available. Five-colour sticky rice uses plant ingredients for its colours. These dishes give meals a local focus; ask about fillings and accompaniments when you have dietary restrictions.

Best for

  • Travellers interested in plateau scenery, architecture and food
  • Couples or small parties wanting a guide without riding a motorcycle

How can I plan five days for Ha Giang with a guide and driver?

Plan a private-car trip with one Hanoi night, one Ha Giang night and two nights in Dong Van. Travel north through Quan Ba and Yen Minh, visit the Vuong Palace in Sa Phin, then spend a full day around Ma Pi Leng and Meo Vac. Return to Ha Giang on day five through the same northern corridor. This is an out-and-back plateau itinerary; the onward journey to Hanoi is separate. Ask YESD to quote these hotel nights with a driver and a guide.

Two people doing different jobs
YESD’s car tours use a driver and a separate guide.
A palace in Sa Phin
The Vuong Palace combines stone, wood and terracotta construction.
Sunday trading
Dong Van and Meo Vac hold Sunday markets.

For a family or several adults, request the actual beds and bathrooms rather than a generic tour-room label. Keep both nights in the same property so day four starts and ends at one base.

Five days from Hanoi to the plateau and back

The mountain visits use a private car throughout. Each day below ends with a clear meal or hotel plan.

1 Day 1 Arrive in Hanoi and walk by Hoan Kiem Lake

After collecting your bags at Noi Bai, take a taxi or your booked driver to the Hanoi hotel. Bus 86 costs VND 50,000 to Hanoi railway station; from that stop, take a separate taxi to an Old Quarter or Hoan Kiem hotel. Ask reception to hold the bags if you arrive before the room is ready, then eat and rest. For a short first outing, go to Hoan Kiem Lake and follow the shore nearest your hotel. The lake gives you a useful point of reference before stepping into the Old Quarter’s smaller streets. Choose a nearby place for pho noodle soup, then walk or take a taxi back to your accommodation. If you arrive late, make dinner close to the hotel the whole evening’s plan. Before bed, check the morning pickup message and save the driver or guide’s number. Keep tomorrow’s day bag ready with water, a layer, medicines and documents, so you do not have to open the main cases during the drive. The Hanoi night is an arrival stop; add an earlier night if you want museums or a longer city visit.

  • Noi Bai arrival and transfer to the hotel
  • A short Hoan Kiem Lake walk
  • Pho nearby and an unhurried first night

Base: Hanoi

2 Day 2 Drive to Ha Giang and explore the gateway

Have breakfast, check out and meet the car at the agreed Hanoi hotel entrance. Put the main bags in the vehicle and keep the day bag beside you. Plan a lunch stop and breaks with the guide during the journey north, then go straight to the Ha Giang accommodation. If the room is not ready, arrange storage at reception before going out. A modest city walk is enough after the drive. Start at the central square and continue towards the Lo River; Nguyen Trai runs along its western side and Nguyen Thai Hoc along the eastern side. Choose the bank that is convenient for your hotel, then return for dinner. You do not need to cross the city to make this a worthwhile first look. If you arrive with daylight and energy to spare, replace that walk with a guided visit to Thon Tha. The Tay village lies about five kilometres from the city on the road towards Thanh Thuy. Take the car there and back to the same hotel, walking among the stilt houses and fields with your guide. A visit inside a home needs an invitation; do not assume a hosted meal is included. Keep this optional rather than delaying dinner after a long transfer.

  • Hanoi hotel pickup with breakfast and lunch planned
  • A central square and Lo River walk
  • Optional Thon Tha visit with a return car

Base: Ha Giang

3 Day 3 Quan Ba, Tham Ma and the Vuong Palace

Eat breakfast and check out with all your luggage. Follow QL4C north from Ha Giang towards Quan Ba, pausing at Heaven Gate for the valley and limestone views. Continue to Tam Son for lunch, then through Yen Minh. This breaks the drive into understandable stages instead of saving every pause for the most famous pass. Beyond Yen Minh, stop to see the bends at Tham Ma where the driver can park appropriately, then continue to Sa Phin for the Vuong Palace. Arrange admission through the guide and spend time on the courtyards, timber work and carved decoration. The palace is the main cultural visit of this day; Lung Cu is a further detour, not another quick stop on the way. Finish at your Dong Van hotel, leave the cases in the room and walk into the old quarter for dinner. Notice how the tiled roofs and stone facades sit around the public spaces. A simple meal and a short walk are enough after the northbound journey. Ask reception where breakfast will be served tomorrow, especially if you want an early market visit. You will sleep here again after the pass outing, so leave the main packing until day five.

  • Heaven Gate and lunch in Tam Son
  • Tham Ma bends and the palace in Sa Phin
  • Dong Van check-in, dinner and an old-quarter walk

Base: Dong Van

4 Day 4 Ma Pi Leng and Meo Vac from the same hotel

Have breakfast in Dong Van and leave the main luggage in your room. Drive towards Ma Pi Leng with the guide, choosing a viewpoint where the car can stop and everyone can walk comfortably. The gorge landscape is the focus; a roadside view and a short walk can fill the morning without adding a strenuous trail. Continue to Meo Vac for lunch. If this is Sunday and the market is a priority, discuss an earlier town visit followed by the pass on the return journey. On other days, keep the town stop for a meal rather than expecting the Sunday gathering. Tell the guide whether you want to browse produce and everyday goods or spend longer overlooking the river. Return to the same Dong Van hotel, then go out for dinner at your own pace. You have time to revisit an old-quarter café or try a different local dish without checking in again. The default day stays on land. A Nho Que boat trip changes the approach, walking and schedule; use the separate booking advice below if you want that alternative, rather than adding it after the entire road outing.

  • A viewpoint above the Nho Que gorge
  • Meo Vac lunch, with a Sunday-market option
  • Dong Van again for dinner and the second night

Base: Dong Van

5 Day 5 Return through Yen Minh and Quan Ba to Ha Giang

After breakfast, check out and load every bag into the car. Return along the northern corridor through Sa Phin and Yen Minh, continuing via Quan Ba to Ha Giang. Arrange lunch in a town along the way and use the breaks for rest or a view you passed on the outward drive. Retracing this route is intentional: it keeps the final journey separate from the longer circuit through Du Gia. Finish at the Ha Giang address written in your booking. If you left extra luggage in storage, allow time to collect it before your next pickup. For a further local night, take the bags to the new accommodation and arrange dinner there or nearby. QT Guest House offers luggage storage and private rooms as well as dorms; request a private room if you want to sleep there. A later coach or car to Hanoi is another booking. Give that provider the exact pickup point and decide where you will sleep after the journey. A fifth hotel night in Ha Giang or a night in Hanoi adds to this route’s four nights. Keep an international flight for a later day, after reaching Hanoi, so the final mountain drive is not tied to airport check-in.

  • Checkout with all cases and day bags
  • Lunch and breaks on the return via Yen Minh
  • Ha Giang drop-off and the next overnight plan

  1. Hanoi Ha Giang

Car Travel time: Plan a full travel day with lunch and breaks

YESD can start a private car tour at your Hanoi hotel. Agree where the guide joins and whether the car can reach the hotel door or needs a nearby meeting point. The operator’s airport pickup is a separate arrangement; it is not the city-hotel start used here. Tell the provider the number of adults and children and describe the bags. Reserve suitable child seating where needed, and ask for enough space for the party, the driver and a separate guide. A vehicle name alone does not tell you how comfortable that arrangement will be. Discuss motion sickness and the preferred frequency of stops before departure.

  2. Ha Giang Dong Van

Car Travel time: A sightseeing day through Quan Ba, Yen Minh and Sa Phin

Ask the Dong Van property where the car can park and whether anyone needs to carry the bags along a lane or up steps. Send that entrance information to the guide before leaving Ha Giang. If the car stops away from reception, agree who will help with the cases. Have the hotel confirm the reserved category and what happens if it is unavailable on arrival. A substitution farther from the old quarter changes the evening: arrange a restaurant ride when dinner is no longer a comfortable walk from the room. Keep the property’s contact number with the booking so the guide can call ahead.

Booking tips

  • Send dietary needs before the menu is planned. YESD can arrange vegetarian or vegan meals; explain whether eggs, dairy, meat stock or shared dishes matter to you.
  • For the YESD booking, ask how to submit the requested passport picture securely for border-permit and accommodation registration, and obtain confirmation that the paperwork is arranged.
  • For more than two guests, request the exact number of rooms, beds and bathrooms. The Silk River double’s maximum of two is not increased by a general child or extra-guest surcharge.
  • Carry a small bag for walks and keep valuables with you when leaving the car. Ask where the larger cases will be held during any boat substitution.

Choices that change this mountain trip

Can we take a boat on the Nho Que River?

Ask YESD for a revised day-four programme. The boat is not a standard inclusion, and reaching the water adds transfers and a physical approach that the road viewpoints do not require. Obtain the meeting place, how you reach the pier, any steps or walking, the return arrangements and the total price before choosing it. Tell the guide about mobility needs and decide what to shorten, such as a market visit or the time in Meo Vac, so you still return to Dong Van for dinner.

Which arrival date puts the market on day four?

Start day one in Hanoi on a Thursday to make day four a Sunday. You then sleep in Ha Giang on Friday and Dong Van on Saturday and Sunday. When choosing dates, tell the operator whether the Sunday visit is the main reason for the trip, so a change of hotel or departure day does not move it off the calendar.

How would Lung Cu fit?

Lung Cu is farther north and requires a detour from this route. If the flag tower and the surrounding northern villages are your main interest, ask to replace part of day three rather than squeeze it in after the palace. You could also extend the stay in Dong Van by a night and give the northern outing its own day. The flag-tower visit involves climbing steps, so discuss whether you want to go up or focus on the surrounding landscape.

Can we use hotels instead of family homestays?

YESD can arrange hotel alternatives. Ask for the property and room category, with photographs of the beds and bathroom, before payment. A couple can compare the Silk River double with a private room at QT Guest House; the latter also sells dorm beds, so specify which you want. If anyone needs a lift, QT lists one, but still ask about the route from the vehicle to the assigned room. Have the operator name the Dong Van hotel too.

Is this the right route for rice-terrace photography?

The eastern plateau here is primarily a limestone and cultural route. Hoang Su Phi’s extensive terraces lie in the western region and need a different itinerary. For generally mild touring weather, YESD recommends March–May or October–November. December–February can be cold in the mountains, so pack a warm layer for stops outside the car. Summer is wetter and views can be obscured; keep architecture, meals and village life among your interests as well as distant panoramas.

How does YESD take payment?

First agree the final itinerary and quotation. YESD’s published process requests a 30% deposit through an emailed payment link, with the remaining amount paid on arrival in Ha Giang. Save the confirmation and ask which currency and payment method apply to the balance. Read the cancellation terms attached to your booking before paying; do not assume another operator’s group-tour policy covers this private arrangement. If the rooms are being booked separately, make sure their cancellation dates work with the tour confirmation.
