A city walk followed by two full coastal days

This route balances a compact Saigon visit with time outside the city. Stay two nights in Ho Chi Minh City, then three in Mui Ne. The arrival day is deliberately light, leaving the next morning for the Independence Palace and the afternoon for central streets. Once on the coast, keep one day for dunes and another for a short kite lesson or cooking. You can enjoy the landscape and food without taking a water-sport lesson.

The car move has its own day. That makes the two full coastal mornings available for outings rather than fitting them around luggage and checkout. Choose accommodation from the activity you most want: the Nguyen Dinh Chieu strip for the kite school, or the Pandanus and fishing-village side for resort excursions. A pool, shaded terrace and nearby restaurant are useful on a short stay because the afternoon need not become another long drive.

December–March is a sensible starting point when comparing dates: Saigon is outside its usual May–November rainy period, and Mui Ne is in the main northeast-wind season. October is a developing shoulder month for the wind, while May–September offers less reliable lesson conditions. Windy weather suits kites differently from swimming or a quiet beach afternoon; let the instructor set the teaching slot and follow local beach advice.

The palace and its exhibition

The Independence Palace gives the city morning a clear focus. Choose the palace-only visit or add the exhibition with a combined ticket; leaving time to read is more rewarding than hurrying through both before lunch.

A walk through central Saigon

The Post Office, cathedral exterior, Dong Khoi and Opera House make a connected afternoon. On these streets, civic buildings sit alongside working shops and cafés, so a pause for a drink is part of the outing.

White dunes beside a lotus lake

Bau Trang combines pale sand hills with lakes, a different setting from the smaller red dunes. Watch the changes in colour and shape as you walk; a landscape visit can stand on its own without a motorised sand ride.

First kite controls on the sand

A beginner starts with a trainer kite and learns how to control it before progressing. This offers a specific skill to try on a short holiday, with the instructor deciding when conditions suit the next stage.

A fishing-village morning

Pandanus’s guided guest walk uses a minivan to reach the village, harbour and market. It returns before breakfast, giving an early look at local work while leaving most of the day free.

Fish noodles and grilled squid

Look for banh canh, thick rice or tapioca noodles in fish broth with fish cakes, or grilled sun-dried squid. These make useful alternatives to ordering another large seafood spread, especially when you want a simple lunch.

Best for

  • Travellers who want city architecture, dunes and a choice of coastal activities
  • A couple or small party preferring one hotel move and a private car

StartBooker answer

How can I combine Ho Chi Minh City and Mui Ne in six days?

Use Saigon as the opening base for two nights, with a palace visit and a walk through the centre on day two. A private car takes you to Mui Ne on day three for three coastal nights. Spend the next morning at the dunes, then choose a short kite lesson or a resort cooking day. Return to a Ho Chi Minh City hotel or another agreed drop-off on day six. This gives five hotel nights, one complete city day and two full days on the coast.

Palace admission
The palace-only adult ticket costs VND 40,000; the combined exhibition ticket is VND 80,000.
City room example
Park Hyatt Saigon offers 34 m² standard rooms with either a king bed or two twins.
Kite meeting point
C2Sky’s kite school is at Sea Lion Beach Resort, 12 Nguyen Dinh Chieu.
Short introduction
The private Taster lesson gives one learner two hours of instruction for EUR 100.
Dune excursion
Pandanus’s three-hour tour visits the white dunes, then either the red dunes or Fairy Stream.
Cooking lunch
The Café Blue Lagoon class starts at 11:00, with four Vietnamese or Asian dishes.

  1. Saigon Opera House and the landscaped approach 1

    Ho Chi Minh City

    2 nights

Palace history, central architecture and cafés

A hotel around Lam Son Square or Dong Khoi puts the Opera House and central restaurants close to the afternoon route. Park Hyatt Saigon is one named example at 2 Lam Son Square; its room categories allow a king or twin-bed choice. If quiet sleep matters more than a square view, compare the street position and room orientation before paying. Use the same room for both opening nights and leave the main bags there on the sightseeing day.

  2. Colourful kites above Mui Ne coastal water 2

    Mui Ne

    3 nights

Sand dunes, kite instruction and coastal food

Choose the Nguyen Dinh Chieu and Ham Tien side when the kite school is your main interest. Pandanus, at 3 Nguyen Huu Tho, is a different base for its guest walk, cooking and dune excursion. Guests staying elsewhere need their own rides to those meeting points and the resort’s agreement to join. Before reserving, look at where you will eat after an outing and how you will get back to the room; the long coastal strip is not one walkable neighbourhood.

Six days with room for meals and returns

Moving days stay light. The full days have one main outing, with time to eat and return to the same hotel.

1 Day 1 Arrive in Saigon and walk by the river

Collect your cases at Tan Son Nhat and meet the booked driver at the pickup point for your flight’s terminal, or take an airport taxi to the hotel. Vietnam Airlines Group domestic flights use T3; for other airlines, follow the terminal on the flight instructions. Give the driver the complete hotel address. If the room is still being prepared, arrange bag storage at reception and have a meal nearby. From a central hotel, stroll along Nguyen Hue towards Ton Duc Thang and take a short walk beside the river. Stop for a drink if the heat or arrival fatigue calls for a break, then walk or take a taxi back to the accommodation. With a late landing, leave this walk for tomorrow. For dinner, try com tam, a plate of broken rice served with pork from the grill and side dishes. Ask about the meat and sauces before ordering if you have dietary restrictions. Pack a small bag for the palace morning and leave the rest of the luggage in the room.

  • Airport pickup and case storage
  • Nguyen Hue and the river
  • A simple first dinner

Base: Ho Chi Minh City

2 Day 2 The palace, lunch and the central streets

Have breakfast before heading to the Independence Palace’s main gate at 135 Nam Ky Khoi Nghia. This entrance operates from 07:00 to 18:00. Select palace-only admission or the combined palace-and-exhibition ticket, then give the morning to that choice. Take lunch after the visit rather than rushing straight into another museum. The War Remnants Museum can replace the palace when its wartime photography and exhibits are your main interest. Its entrance is at 28 Vo Van Tan, with daily visiting hours of 07:30–17:30 and ticket sales ending at 17:00. Consider the difficult subject matter when travelling with children or anyone who prefers a lighter historical visit. The afternoon walk works with either morning choice. After lunch, go to the Central Post Office and see the cathedral exterior, then follow Dong Khoi towards the Opera House. Choose a café along the way; you can also look for an open business in the reused apartment building at 22 Ly Tu Trong. This is a place to select a café or shop, rather than a single attraction with one admission. Return to the hotel before dinner, and check that the car supplier has tomorrow’s lobby address and contact number.

  • One historical visit
  • Post Office to the Opera House
  • A café stop and hotel return

Base: Ho Chi Minh City

3 Day 3 Take the car to Mui Ne and settle in

Eat breakfast, check out and have all cases ready for the driver. Meet at the hotel entrance you agreed, load the car and leave the city. Arrange a meal or comfort stop with the supplier when setting the departure time; keep water and the small bag within reach rather than buried in a suitcase. On reaching the coastal hotel, check in or ask reception to hold the bags while the room is prepared. Pandanus lists 15:00 check-in; other properties have their own hours. Have lunch if you have not eaten on the road, then make a short orientation walk around the property and its beach approach. For a kite booking, locate Sea Lion Beach Resort at 12 Nguyen Dinh Chieu and arrange how you will reach it from your room. If you are using the resort excursions instead, visit Guest Relations to reserve the dune outing and find its gathering point. Finish with dinner near your accommodation. Lau tha brings together fish, shrimp, pork, vegetables and noodles with a peanut-flavoured broth, so check the ingredients if sharing it with the party.

  • Breakfast and checkout with all cases
  • Hotel arrival and lunch
  • Find the next outing’s meeting point

Base: Mui Ne

4 Day 4 White dunes and one contrasting stop

Reserve the three-hour dune excursion through Pandanus and agree its departure time and gathering point. Eat beforehand, or arrange breakfast after an early outing with the resort. The car starts from Pandanus and brings you back there. If your room is elsewhere, book the rides to the resort and back to your own hotel separately, and ask the desk whether it can take your party. Visit the white dunes at Bau Trang, then choose either the red dunes or Fairy Stream for the second stop. The red dunes keep the outing on sand; the stream involves taking off shoes and wading upstream beside coloured formations. Choose for the party’s comfort with walking, slopes and water, and ask about the approach before booking if mobility is limited. A van or jeep is available through the resort; additional motorised activities at the dunes are a separate purchase. Return to Pandanus, have lunch and take the arranged car back to your accommodation if needed. Leave the afternoon for a shaded rest, the pool or a short shore walk suited to the local conditions. A bowl of fish-noodle soup makes an easy meal when you do not want a long restaurant evening.

  • White dunes at Bau Trang
  • Red dunes or Fairy Stream
  • Resort return, lunch and a quiet afternoon

Base: Mui Ne

5 Day 5 A short kite lesson or a cooking lunch

For the kite option, agree a teaching time with the instructor and arrange your meals around it. Join at Sea Lion Beach Resort, leaving the suitcases in your room and bringing water, sun protection and a dry change of clothes. The private Taster is a two-hour lesson for one learner; a companion can relax at the accommodation while you learn. Plan lunch or dinner together according to the lesson time. Afterwards, change and take your booked ride or taxi back to the hotel. For a resort day, Pandanus guests can reserve the village walk through Guest Relations. The minivan leaves at 06:30 and returns around 08:00 for breakfast; ask the desk where to gather. This is separate from the cooking reservation. Book the 11:00 class at Café Blue Lagoon at least 24 hours ahead, agreeing the date with the desk. Request a weekday place, and ask the desk directly if your only available date is a Saturday or holiday. The class prepares four dishes and ends with lunch. The market-and-cooking version starts at 08:30 with a visit to Ham Tien Market, then returns to the resort. Ask for its gathering instructions and choose it instead of combining two early programmes. Guests from another hotel need the resort’s acceptance and their own return ride. Take the afternoon off, then have dinner and pack dry and wet items separately for tomorrow’s car.

  • Instruction or a resort food day
  • Breakfast and the correct gathering point
  • A meal and hotel return

Base: Mui Ne

6 Day 6 Check out and return to Saigon

Have breakfast and prepare for the return car. Pandanus checkout is at noon; if your pickup is later, ask the Bell Desk to store the cases and set a time to collect them. At another property, arrange the equivalent with reception. A nearby lunch is useful for a later departure, but leave time to return, retrieve everything and meet the driver. Have the cases ready when the car arrives, then load them. Give the supplier the complete Saigon drop-off address. If you are going to a city hotel, arrange arrival instructions and dinner near it; a taxi can complete a different onward city address if needed. If the car is taking you straight to the airport, book that terminal drop explicitly and agree a pickup that allows for the road journey and your airline’s reporting requirement. The itinerary finishes in Ho Chi Minh City after five hotel nights. A further city room, followed by a flight on day seven, is an extension with a sixth night. Choose that buffer when you want to keep a fixed flight apart from the long car journey. There is no last dune or lesson appointment to fit in before leaving. Check documents, phone, purchases and the bags in storage before signing out.

  • Breakfast, checkout and bag collection
  • The agreed city hotel or airport drop
  • A separately booked sixth night if needed

Base: Mui Ne

Reserve the outward journey for day three and the return for day six, using the full addresses where you want to meet and finish.

Transfer Travel time: Ask for the journey estimate between your two hotels

C2Sky can arrange collection from a Ho Chi Minh City hotel. Send the city and Mui Ne addresses, both travel dates, the number of passengers and the cases or board bags you will carry. Ask for the vehicle, complete hotel-to-hotel fare and payment method before reserving. Its airport price is a useful reference, but a city-hotel journey needs its own quote. Agree the lobby or entrance pickup, the contact to use on the day, waiting arrangements and any meal or comfort stop. Ask for a road-time estimate when choosing the departure. The driver confirms the travel plan the day before. For the return, specify a city hotel or the flight’s terminal. Keep the driver’s message and the hotel address available offline. A car fare covers the vehicle; teaching, accommodation and resort excursions have their own charges.

Questions about lessons, lunch and room choices

Can I complete a longer kite course in this itinerary?

A short introduction fits; the longer courses need more days. C2Sky lists seven hours over three to four days, or nine hours over four to five days. There are only two full coastal days here. Extend the Mui Ne stay for one of those courses and discuss your experience with the instructor before selecting it. Extra teaching dates require extra room nights as well as lesson time.

Should two beginners book a duo or separate private lessons?

The duo has one instructor for two learners, who need similar levels. It gives the pair three hours together. Separate private lessons give each person individual teaching time, which can be useful if you learn at different speeds or one person already has experience. Ask the school whether the pairing suits you; sharing a holiday does not automatically make a shared lesson the best format.

Does a cooking companion need to pay for a second class?

Pandanus says each cooking student may invite one guest to the lunch. That is different from booking two students to take part in preparing the dishes. Explain which arrangement you want when reserving and ask how it applies to children or guests staying elsewhere. If you want to shop at the market as well, choose the earlier market-and-cooking option and request its gathering instructions.

Does the kite-school address also work for wing lessons?

C2Sky lists its wing centre at Rainbow Beach, 98 Huynh Thuc Khang, Quarter 4. The wing session’s meeting place depends on the wind that day, so ask the instructor where to join and send that location to your driver. Share it with any companions meeting you afterwards. The kite school’s Sea Lion address is not a substitute for those instructions.

Does every Park Hyatt room face the Opera House?

No. The standard King and 2 Twin Beds categories are 34 m² and list a varying view. The separately named City View versions specify Lam Son Square and the Opera House. Choose the view category if that outlook matters, and the bed category for the people sharing. Confirm extra-person arrangements with the hotel rather than inferring occupancy from the room size.

What happens if the wind is unsuitable for my lesson?

The school tries to reschedule and charges for the lesson hours completed. Keep some flexibility around the teaching slot and ask how unused time will be settled under your booking. This is not a promise of a refund on a fixed prepaid package. A companion can keep their own cooking or hotel plans, while you agree a new slot with the instructor.
