Three weeks southbound, with a bed after every train

Travel south through the capital, inland limestone, caves, the former imperial capital, a trading town and the coast. Eight bases mean seven hotel changes; this trip suits someone who enjoys the railway journey and can pack lightly.

Sleep in Hanoi on nights 1–3, Ninh Binh on 4–5, Phong Nha on 6–8, Hue on 9–10, Da Nang on 11–12, Hoi An on 13–15, Nha Trang on 16–18 and Ho Chi Minh City on 19–20. Leave on day 21.

Buy the intercity trains before making rooms nonrefundable. The FAQ explains the alternative night count if you choose a sleeper.

Hanoi beyond the platform

Hanoi combines traces of imperial and wartime government with streets named for trades. Meet its history and everyday food culture before leaving by rail.

Temples inside the limestone landscape

Hoa Lu was a capital before Hanoi. Bich Dong’s shrines occupy a mountainside, giving the limestone landscape a cultural subject as well as a view. Its lower grounds suit a shorter visit than the upper steps.

Two ways to enter the caves

The river approach to Phong Nha contrasts with Paradise’s forest and dry interior. Nuoc Nut substitutes a guided forest walk and less developed cave for the second public show-cave day.

The train over Hai Van

The heritage railway between Hue and Da Nang passes Hai Van, with mountains and sea beside the carriage. This shorter ride gives the route a scenic centrepiece between its longer southbound journeys.

A trading town, then a meal you make

Hoi An’s houses and assembly halls reflect its trading history. The cooking day shifts attention to ingredients: market, river boat, herb garden and lunch you help prepare.

Cham culture before a coast day

Po Nagar is an active sacred tower complex. Pair it with a coastal rest day so Nha Trang offers culture and recovery between the longer trains.

Best for

  • Travellers who enjoy the railway journey as well as the destination
  • Three weeks of history, caves, cooking and coast with separate full days

StartBooker answer

What is a realistic three-week Vietnam route by train?

Travel south from Hanoi through Ninh Binh, Phong Nha, Hue, Da Nang, Hoi An and Nha Trang, finishing in Ho Chi Minh City. This route gives the caves two full days and leaves a coastal rest day after the longest train ride. It uses six trains, twenty hotel nights and eight bases, so it suits people who enjoy rail travel and regular changes of scenery. Dong Hoi is the station for Phong Nha; Hoi An needs roads from and back to Da Nang. Choose same-day train arrivals to keep this hotel allocation.

Phong Nha rail gateway
Dong Hoi is the railway gateway for the Phong Nha stay.
Hoi An station road
Hoi An requires a road beyond Da Nang.
Coastal heritage train
Hue–Da Nang has a separate heritage-train booking product.

    Hanoi

    3 nights

    Capital history and guild streets

Hoan Kiem and the Old Quarter suit the opening walks and independent meals. West Lake offers a quieter setting with more rides into the centre. Choose somewhere with dinner after a late flight and an easy taxi departure for the railway.

    Ninh Binh

    2 nights

    Limestone countryside and ancient temples

Tam Coc suits village meals and a countryside walk after the train. A Trang An-side property offers another quieter setting, with local rides and meals to arrange. Both need a road from the city station; choose the surroundings you want after the temple day.

    3 nights

    Nha Trang

    3 nights

Po Nagar and a day beside the sea

The days, from the first lake walk to the last airport car

Full sightseeing days sit between the longer journeys. Arrival evenings stay close to the room, and each outing returns to the same hotel.

1 Day 1 Arrive, settle in and walk beside Hoan Kiem

After entry formalities and bag collection at Noi Bai, take an airport taxi or meet your driver for the hotel. Bus 86 costs VND 50,000 per person to Hanoi station, followed by a separate hotel taxi. Check in or arrange storage before going out. Start by the red Huc Bridge on Hoan Kiem Lake, follow the lakeside towards Trang Tien and find dinner near the room. Walk back if staying centrally, or take a taxi to West Lake. After a late landing, eat near the Hanoi room and sleep.

  • Hoan Kiem lakeside
  • Dinner after the hotel arrival

Base: Hanoi

2 Day 2 A citadel morning and an evening performance

Take a taxi to the Thang Long Citadel entrance at 19C Hoang Dieu, open daily 08:00–17:00. Explore the palace remains and later D67 wartime history; an online ticket arrives by email with a QR code for entry. Have lunch, then a hotel break. For a contrasting evening, reserve a water-puppet performance at the theatre on Dinh Tien Hoang by the lake. Puppeteers work figures through water to tell village stories. Eat afterwards and return to the room.

  • The citadel visitor entrance
  • A reserved water-puppet show

Base: Hanoi

3 Day 3 Guild streets and a Hanoian lunch

Explore a few Old Quarter streets: Hang Gai for silk, Hang Bac for jewellery and Lan Ong for traditional herbs. Pause at a café when the streets become tiring. Try bun cha for lunch: grilled pork and rice noodles with herbs and dipping sauce. Cafe Giang on Nguyen Huu Huan is a later option for coffee with sweet egg foam. Return to your hotel afterwards.

  • Three guild streets
  • Grilled pork with noodles and egg coffee

Base: Hanoi

4 Day 4 Hanoi station to the Ninh Binh countryside

After breakfast, check out with your bags and take a taxi to Hanoi railway station. The morning train leaves time for the countryside hotel after reaching Ninh Binh. Meet its driver or take a taxi to Tam Coc or the Trang An-side property. Have lunch and settle in. In Tam Coc, walk around the village and boat-pier surroundings, then eat nearby. At a remote lodge, enjoy the garden and arrange dinner there.

  • Ninh Binh station pickup
  • A modest Tam Coc or lodge afternoon

Base: Ninh Binh

5 Day 5 Hoa Lu, a countryside lunch and Bich Dong

Book a car for Hoa Lu’s ancient-capital temples, lunch near Tam Coc, then Bich Dong Pagoda and the hotel return. Upper pagoda tiers require steps. For a steep viewpoint instead, replace Bich Dong with Hang Mua. The 17 September 2026 notice suspended Trang An and Van Long boating and shortened Tam Coc’s route. A later Board article describes a hosted Trang An boat visit on 1 October, without confirming ordinary public reopening. Ask the ticket office which public route runs on your date. A confirmed boat trip can replace part of the land outing; otherwise keep the temples.

  • A complete land route
  • Boat travel only on a confirmed public route

Base: Ninh Binh

6 Day 6 An early train, then the road to Phong Nha

Collect a packed breakfast if checkout is too early for the hotel kitchen. Ride to Ninh Binh station with all bags for the Dong Hoi train. Bring lunch, water, a light layer and regular essentials in your small bag. Have a driver waiting at Dong Hoi for the road to Phong Nha village or your rural hotel. Send the train number so a delayed arrival can be followed. Eat after check-in; agree a late meal ahead if your service arrives in the evening.

  • Food for the long rail journey
  • Dong Hoi driver and hotel dinner

Base: Phong Nha

7 Day 7 Take the numbered boat into Phong Nha Cave

Go to the Phong Nha tourism centre, buy admission and the return boat, then follow the pier on the left to receive your boat number. After around thirty minutes on the Son River, the crew switches to hand rowing inside the cave. Dry passages involve walkways. Find the same numbered boat for the return to the centre. The standard visit takes about two and a half hours. Have lunch in the village and return to the hotel. Check river access before leaving on a wet day.

  • Keep the boat number
  • River, dry passages and the same boat back

Base: Phong Nha

8 Day 8 Paradise Cave, or a guided Nuoc Nut day

Book a car from your hotel to Paradise Cave and back. The electric ride covers the 1.6-kilometre forest approach; walking remains 500 metres uphill plus the one-kilometre public wooden route inside. Eat afterwards and meet your car at the agreed point. Alternatively, join Oxalis’s Nuoc Nut day: Phong Nha hotel pickup 07:00–07:30, briefing, Commander Cave Museum, forest walk, lunch and caving. The tour concludes around 17:00, followed by the operator’s transfer to your hotel. Prepare the requested shoes and daypack, leaving the suitcase at your room. Either choice ends at the third Phong Nha hotel night.

  • Electric transport followed by walking
  • A guided day alternative without a camp night

Base: Phong Nha

9 Day 9 Back to Dong Hoi, then south to Hue

Check out and take the booked car to Dong Hoi station. Arrange breakfast early enough for the road and morning train, carrying all luggage. The southbound service reaches Hue before the afternoon. Take a taxi from Hue station to the hotel. Agree bag storage if the room is not ready, then find lunch. Later, walk beside the Perfume River, eat on the southern bank and return to the room. Tomorrow has the full Imperial City visit.

  • The village-to-station road
  • Lunch and a river evening in Hue

Base: Hue

10 Day 10 Enter Hue’s Imperial City through Ngo Mon

Go to Ngo Mon, the Imperial City’s main visitor entrance. Buy the ticket or have the online confirmation ready. Explore the courtyards, palace buildings and displays, following visitor signs; agree pickup at the exit staff direct you to. For lunch, try bun thit nuong, rice noodles with grilled pork, herbs and pickles, or banh beo, small steamed rice cakes usually topped with shrimp and scallion oil. Rest afterwards, then choose a river walk or café. Save the outlying tombs for a longer stay.

  • Ngo Mon ticket entrance
  • A local lunch after the palace grounds

Base: Hue

11 Day 11 Ride the heritage train to Da Nang

Check out after breakfast and take your bags to Hue station for the morning heritage train. The Hai Van coastal ride takes roughly three hours; use your ticket’s time and carriage number. A taxi completes the Da Nang hotel arrival. After check-in, riverside guests can walk by the Han River before dinner; My Khe guests can go to the shore. Return to the room after dinner.

  • Hai Van from the carriage
  • Station taxi and a short arrival walk

Base: Da Nang

12 Day 12 Cham sculpture before the beach or river

Start at the Museum of Cham Sculpture, 02, 2 Thang 9 (2 September) Street. Follow a group such as My Son or Tra Kieu to connect carvings with their origins. Leave oversized luggage at the hotel; hand luggage over three kilograms must be stored, with valuables kept with you. Visit before the 17:00 close. Have lunch outside, then choose My Khe or the Han River. A central hotel guest needs a taxi to the beach and back. Follow lifeguard guidance before swimming; in rain, use a café and hotel break.

  • A named sculpture collection
  • A flexible coast afternoon

Base: Da Nang

13 Day 13 A road move into Hoi An

Have breakfast, check out and take the car from your Da Nang hotel to the Hoi An room. Include all passengers and bags in the arrangement. After check-in or agreed storage, go into the Ancient Town. Start near the Japanese Covered Bridge and follow Tran Phu through the historic streets to a meal. Return to the hotel afterwards; beach or rural guests need their own road back.

  • A hotel-to-hotel road
  • A first walk from the Japanese Bridge

Base: Hoi An

14 Day 14 Interiors along the trading-town streets

Buy the heritage product for your choices; the five-site version includes a required museum selection. Start near the Japanese Bridge, walk east along Tran Phu to an assembly hall or house and continue towards the market. Return by Nguyen Thai Hoc and Bach Dang, pausing inside chosen buildings. Try cao lau, noodles with pork and herbs, for lunch. Ask about sauce or fillings if needed. Keep the afternoon for a café or hotel. Retain the punched ticket for its remaining selections.

  • Choose the ticket for your interiors
  • A west-to-east town walk

Base: Hoi An

15 Day 15 Meet Red Bridge at Hai Cafe

Reach Hai Cafe, 98 Nguyen Thai Hoc, for 08:15; beach and rural guests need an early taxi. Red Bridge combines market, boat, herb garden, cooking and lunch. The programme finishes around 13:00, followed by its included central-town transfer and your separate hotel leg. If staying for the school’s pool, agree a later return. Back at the room, pack and arrange a takeaway breakfast for tomorrow’s predawn station road.

  • 08:15 at 98 Nguyen Thai Hoc
  • Class finish, central return and hotel road

Base: Hoi An

16 Day 16 Predawn road to Da Nang and a long rail day

With checkout arranged the night before, collect a packed breakfast for the early Da Nang–Nha Trang train. Its example leaves around 06:00, requiring a Hoi An car before dawn. Ask the driver to work back from boarding, with the road and a station margin included. Carry lunch, water and daily essentials. At Nha Trang station, meet the car or take a taxi to the hotel, then have dinner. A later service needs accepted late check-in and an evening meal arrangement.

  • Predawn checkout and breakfast
  • No excursion competing with the rail day

Base: Nha Trang

17 Day 17 Po Nagar, lunch and the city promenade

Take a taxi to Po Nagar at 61, 2/4 Street, with an agreed return or later city drop. Begin at the Mandapa pillars and ask staff which approach suits you for the upper towers. The levels involve stairs; a shorter lower-area visit is another option. Follow posted dress and worship rules. After lunch, return near Tram Huong Tower on Tran Phu, beside 2 April Square. Walk the promenade, pause at a café and go back to the hotel. Cam Ranh guests need both city roads.

  • Mandapa and the upper towers
  • Lunch followed by the city coast

Base: Nha Trang

18 Day 18 Stay beside the sea for the day

Have a slower breakfast, walk the shore in the cooler morning, then return for shade, lunch and a room break. Ask about the swimming area and conditions where you stay; the beach still offers a walk when entering the water is unsuitable. Use the afternoon for the pool or reading, and dinner near the hotel. Resort guests can enjoy the facilities that justified their longer city roads.

  • A full coastal rest day
  • Meals and shade near the room

Base: Nha Trang

19 Day 19 A southbound day to Saigon

After breakfast and checkout, ride to Nha Trang station. A Cam Ranh hotel needs an earlier car than a city room. Board the daytime Saigon service with food and essentials within reach. Collect every bag at Saigon railway station and take a taxi to the hotel. Reception should have your expected arrival; find dinner nearby after settling in.

  • Nha Trang station with all luggage
  • Saigon station, hotel and dinner

20 Day 20 Palace history and central architecture

Enter the Independence Palace at 135 Nam Ky Khoi Nghia. Choose palace-only admission or the combined historical exhibition, then follow the rooms and displays. Main-gate ticketing and visits run 07:00–18:00. Have lunch and a break. Later, walk along Dong Khoi past the Opera House towards the Central Post Office and cathedral area. Choose a café or dinner and return to the hotel. For a shopping stop, 42 Nguyen Hue has individual businesses inside a repurposed apartment building; choose one that is open.

  • The palace main gate
  • Dong Khoi architecture and a final dinner

Base: Ho Chi Minh City

21 Day 21 Collect the bags and leave from the flight terminal

Have breakfast, check out and leave with bags and passport. For a later flight, agree hotel storage, stay nearby for lunch and collect everything before the airport car. Give the driver your flight terminal. All Vietnam Airlines Group domestic flights, including Pacific and VASCO, use T3; international passengers use the terminal named by their airline. Follow the carrier’s reporting time and agree a hotel departure allowing the city road. Keep remaining shopping close to the room.

  • Bag collection before the airport car
  • The booked terminal and carrier check-in

Base: Ho Chi Minh City

What to book for the six trains and hotel roads

Use the station names below in the railway booking, then arrange the roads at both ends. These clock examples are from the operator’s timetable checked on 6 October 2026; confirm the service, seats and time for your own travel date before paying for rooms.

7 transfers

  1. Hanoi Ninh Binh

Train Travel time: About 2¼ hours aboard

The SE5 timetable example runs Hanoi 08:00 to Ninh Binh 10:16. Take a hotel taxi to Hanoi station, then a receiving car to Tam Coc or the countryside lodge. Give the final hotel name to the driver; both roads are separate from the train fare.

  2. Ninh Binh Phong Nha

Train Travel time: About eight hours by rail, then the Phong Nha road

SE7 runs Ninh Binh 08:16 to Dong Hoi 16:27 on the same day. Oxalis offers the separate Dong Hoi–Phong Nha road, about 45 kilometres, in a private seven-seat car. Agree the station meeting and final property; rural hotels can change that last part.

  3. Phong Nha Hue

Train Travel time: About three hours by train, plus the village road

SE1’s example is Dong Hoi 07:33 to Hue 10:30 on your boarding day. Work the early Phong Nha car back from departure, including checkout and boarding. A taxi from Hue station finishes the move.

  4. Hue Da Nang

Train Travel time: Roughly three hours across Hai Van

Select Hue → Da Nang and the morning heritage journey. Choose the dated carriage and seats, then arrange both station taxis. Its coast and pass make this the shorter ride to enjoy. Keep a camera and light layer within reach while the main luggage is stowed.

  5. Da Nang Hoi An

Transfer Travel time: A hotel-to-hotel road

Book a car between the Da Nang and Hoi An hotels, giving every passenger, bag and full address. Agree the receiving entrance if vehicles cannot stop outside it. An Bang or rural lodging changes the destination. This move buys no railway ticket.

  6. Hoi An Nha Trang

Train Travel time: About eleven hours aboard the early service

SE9’s example is Da Nang 06:03 to Nha Trang 17:03, the early-road option on day 16. SE3 offers a later pattern, 10:43–21:12, with a late hotel arrival. Compare predawn Hoi An checkout against dinner after an evening Nha Trang arrival before choosing.

  7. Nha Trang Ho Chi Minh City

Train Travel time: About eight hours on the daytime southbound train

SE7’s published pattern is Nha Trang 08:47 to Saigon 17:00 on the boarding day. Saigon is the railway name for Ho Chi Minh City. Budget the hotel-to-station car and the final city taxi; a metro ticket does not cover this national-rail journey.

Seat fares, hotel roads and the outings you buy

Price the rail journeys per passenger and the private roads per vehicle. The examples below cover admissions or named products; they do not add up to a whole holiday budget.

Rail categories Compare the service and category before multiplying the per-person fare by your party size. These seats do not cover the hotel roads.
Six tickets per passenger, priced for the date and category
Dong Hoi–Phong Nha cars Per seven-seat car: confirm passengers, suitcases and hotel address. The vehicle name does not promise room for seven guests with large bags.
VND 650,000 one way; VND 1,300,000 for two directions
Thang Long Citadel The centre’s tariff applies to Vietnamese and international visitors. Separate night or specialist products should be bought as their own experiences.
VND 100,000 per visit; VND 200,000 for two standard entries
Ninh Binh land or water choice Trang An’s published category above 1.3 m is VND 300,000. Buy only a confirmed public route; day 5 also gives a land outing.
Hoa Lu: VND 20,000 per adult; Hang Mua: VND 150,000 per person
Phong Nha boat visit The boat carries up to twelve; individual entry is separate. Children below 1.3 metres are exempt from entry. Roads, lunch and any separately hired guide add to the total.
Two VND 150,000 entries + VND 700,000 return boat = VND 1,000,000
The second cave day Paradise includes the electric ride: height 1.1–1.3 m VND 145,000; below 1.1 m free. Nuoc Nut includes lunch, ages 12–70, maximum twelve.
Paradise: VND 270,000 per adult; Nuoc Nut: VND 2,150,000 per person
Cham sculpture The museum’s self-guided audio uses its Wi-Fi and a browser. Contact the museum ahead for a guided group visit rather than treating a guide as included in admission.
VND 60,000 ordinary entry; VND 120,000 for two
Hoi An heritage selections Both require Bridge or Quan Cong. Five sites add one museum and three others; three sites add two. Keep the stub, valid up to three days. Under-16s exempt.
VND 80,000 for three sites or VND 120,000 for five
Red Bridge cooking Boat, class, lunch and central return included. Age 7+ pays full price; younger children accompany without cooking and buy meals separately.
USD 35 per adult; USD 70 for two
Independence Palace The higher product adds the separate historical exhibition. Choose it for that subject; the cheaper palace ticket already covers the main building visit.
Two adults: VND 80,000 palace-only or VND 160,000 combined

Booking tips

  • Keep a single list of six train dates, seat or berth numbers and station pairs, plus the road provider at each end.
  • Enter passenger names and passport details carefully. When collecting a ticket, bring the booking code and the required identification.
  • Request a vehicle quote that includes your bags and everyone travelling. The two Dong Hoi roads and the Hoi An–Da Nang station road need their own budget.
  • Send dietary requests before paying for the cooking or guided cave day, and ask which changes the operator can offer.

Choices that change the rail holiday

Would a berth be useful even on a daytime train?

A berth lets you lie down during a longer journey. The railway lists soft seats and four- or six-berth layouts. Compare the category and berth level for your date; one berth does not make the cabin private. Check companions’ assigned places before paying.

How does an overnight train change the twenty nights?

Leaving Ninh Binh on night 5 and reaching Dong Hoi on day 6 replaces the second Ninh Binh hotel night with a train night: nineteen hotel nights plus one sleeper. Book the arrival car and agree early room access or luggage storage separately.

What information do children need on the train booking?

The railway asks for each child’s date of birth from the birth certificate; adults supply valid photo-identification details. Use its ticket-specific age and seat rules, keeping the reservation documents with you. Cave height bands and hotel child allowances do not determine railway entitlement.

Can I leave bags at a hotel between checkout and a later train?

Ask the hotel to store bags until departure, agreeing collection point and time. Return after lunch and meet the station car there with the bags; storage at one hotel does not deliver them to the next.

Which season is the easiest starting comparison?

Compare March to May for the whole route: the north warms and central Vietnam is generally outside its late-year wettest period. Summer is hotter; autumn rain can change cave and coast days. If the park suspends your cave visit, arrange a permitted village or hotel day.

Could I add Da Lat after Nha Trang?

Add a separate highland stay by road, with more nights or another stop removed. Da Lat’s tourist railway is disconnected from the national corridor. Choose it for the lake, hills or coffee, then book the outward and onward roads before changing the Saigon train.
