Hoi An: a town walk, a cooking day and time by the sea

Looking for Hoi An rooms

Give town and one outing a full day each

For three nights, arrive on day one, leave your bags at the hotel and take the short town walk below. Use day two for selected heritage buildings, lunch and the eastern museum. On day three choose one cooking class or a relaxed An Bang outing; return to the same room that night. Depart on day four. Two nights leave only one full day, so choose between that town day and an excursion. Add a day and hotel night for each further full outing. These counts cover hotel nights in Hoi An; an overnight train elsewhere is additional.

Inside the trading town A house and an assembly hall tell different stories

Pair Tan Ky House with Phuc Kien Assembly Hall rather than visit several buildings without knowing what to look for. The merchant house shows domestic life in the old port; the hall reveals the Chinese community’s religious and gathering spaces. Look at the timber, roof decoration and carved details as well as the courtyards. Hoi An’s mixture of trading cultures helped earn its UNESCO inscription in 1999.

A free cultural stop Precious Heritage, 26 Phan Boi Chau

Precious Heritage displays portraits, costumes and stories in four exhibition rooms. It opens daily from 08:00 to 20:00, with free admission; allow the museum’s suggested 45–60 minutes. Children can borrow a UV flashlight for the free Invisible Stories activity and search for hidden drawings. This is a good eastern stop after the older town buildings, with time to read rather than rush through the photographs.

Quiet tea Reaching Out, 131 Tran Phu

At Reaching Out’s teahouse, staff with hearing or speech disabilities serve through the house’s quiet way of communicating. Follow their lead when ordering and keep conversation low. Choose a tasting flight to compare tea or coffee, or settle over one pot. Its published daily hours are 08:00–20:00, so this can be an afternoon pause between visits rather than another late evening plan.

Make something to take home A folding paper lantern in one morning

Reaching Out’s taught lantern session runs Monday–Friday, 09:00–10:00, with a listed price of USD 20–30 per person. The finished lantern folds flat for the journey home. Reserve the session and obtain its meeting point when booking; a weekend craft-shop browse is a different experience. If this matters to the trip, put it on the calendar before assigning your other full day to a cooking class.

What to order Start with cao lau or white rose dumplings

Hoi An’s food deserves a meal of its own. Cao lau combines thick noodles, pork, greens and crisp toppings; white rose dumplings offer a smaller dish to share. Mi quang and fried wontons give you more regional choices on another day. Ask about the filling or broth before ordering for a vegetarian. Choose a few dishes for the table and leave room to try something different at the next meal.

A day at the coast An Bang without changing hotels

The national tourism guide puts An Bang roughly a ten-minute drive from the town, as a planning estimate. Take a morning ride, choose a beachside lunch and leave the afternoon free rather than booking a second distant outing. For the return, save a café or lodging entrance as the pickup point; a long strip of sand is an awkward meeting address. A beach day can end back in the Ancient Town for dinner.

StartBooker answer

Where should I stay in Hoi An for the Ancient Town and An Bang Beach?

Stay on the Ancient Town edge for heritage visits, evening meals and tailor fittings. An Bang suits a beach holiday with rides into town; Cam Chau offers fields near the urban streets, while Cam Thanh has garden stays among waterways. Three hotel nights give you four days: arrive and take a short walk, spend one full day on heritage and Precious Heritage Museum, choose a cooking class or the beach for the other, then depart. Keep one base for this short visit; add a night for another full outing.

Heritage identity
Hoi An Ancient Town entered the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1999.
Two different settings
An Bang Beach and the Ancient Town are separate places to stay.
Arrival gateway
Da Nang airport is followed by a road journey to Hoi An; the tourism guide suggests about 50 minutes to the Ancient Town.

These examples cover outdoor sitting space, a field view, family beds, a shared house and two practical reasons to choose your base.

For outdoor space near town

Anantara’s Deluxe Balcony Room gives you 36 m², a garden outlook, a Queen or twin beds and a split-level sitting area. The outdoor balcony or terrace makes it useful for a quiet break after town. Maximum occupancy is three adults or two adults and one child; request the actual extra-person bedding if using that capacity. For friends or relatives wanting two rooms, interconnecting rooms are available by arrangement. Book the connection explicitly so the group can move between rooms without going into the corridor.

For a rice-field-facing room

Lasenta’s Deluxe Rice Field View has 40 m², large windows, a sitting area and a desk. Choose a king bed or two singles; the bathroom has a bathtub with a handheld shower. This works for a couple or friends who want to read, rest or work briefly with the fields outside. It is a window-facing category, so choose a different named room if private outdoor space is the priority. An extra bed can be arranged; have the hotel accept your full party before reserving it.

For a family wanting two single beds

Hoi An Eco Lodge’s Family Retreat has 70 m² for four guests, with one double and two single beds. The private living area and garden terrace let children and adults spend time off the beds after an outing. The Retreat zone has its own pool, shared within that part of the resort. This is a useful choice when two children need their own singles and the family wants a slower day at the hotel. For separately enclosed bedrooms, request a floor plan before choosing this unit.

For a group reserving a whole house

Villa at Red Bridge is a whole house for up to seven adults or children plus one infant, with a minimum two-night stay. Three master bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms; a smaller single room shares a master bathroom. The master kings can be made into twins on request. Assign that smaller room before paying so everyone understands the bathroom access. The two-floor house has a kitchen, and breakfast, housekeeping, laundry and bicycles are included. It suits a group that will use the living space and gardens as well as head into town.

For a stay built around fittings

Use a town-edge base if clothing appointments are part of the holiday. Being nearby makes it easier to return without turning each fitting into a beach-to-town excursion. Choose a hotel within a comfortable walk of your selected shop, with space to unpack and store the finished clothes. If one person has an appointment while others want a meal or tea, agree a nearby meeting place and let the group separate for a while. A shorter shopping visit then fits naturally into a day rather than deciding everyone’s schedule.

For an early flight and a slower first day

If you reach Cam Thanh before the room is available, Eco Lodge lists complimentary luggage storage for early arrivals and late departures. Its check-in begins at 14:00. Leave the bags with reception, then decide between lunch at the resort and a town outing that fits the current shuttle schedule. Keep the first day light if you have been traveling overnight. The Main area puts rooms near reception, the restaurant and spa; a Club Suite instead offers 40 m² for two guests with twins, a sitting area and Club Lounge access.

Da Nang arrivals and the journeys around Hoi An

Reach your hotel first, then join each activity from its named meeting place. You can make this visit with walks, taxis and scheduled hotel transport.

Airport, railway and group arrivals

Book the road journey from Da Nang airport

Fly into Da Nang, then continue by taxi or a hotel-arranged car to Hoi An. The national tourism guide suggests about 50 minutes to the Ancient Town; allow longer for traffic and your particular address. Send the driver the flight details and exact hotel entrance. For a stay beside controlled heritage streets, ask where the car can unload and how far you carry the bags. Keep arrival dinner flexible rather than reserve a class shortly after landing. On the return journey, arrange the pickup from the hotel and leave time for airline check-in.

Get off the train in Da Nang

For a rail arrival, use Da Nang station and arrange the remaining road journey to Hoi An. Anantara offers station collection on request, and its arrival page identifies taxis outside the station. Give your hotel the train number and date so the driver meets the correct service. Book the train and car as separate legs unless your package expressly includes both. A room in Hoi An does not put you beside the railway: return to Da Nang station for the next train, with time to board.

Check vehicle capacity for a group arrival

Villa at Red Bridge lists an airport car for up to three passengers and a minivan option. A full house group should send its passenger numbers, infant needs and suitcase count before choosing the vehicle. The published one-way transfer examples are USD 25 for the car and USD 35 for the minivan. The villa receives guests from 14:00; agree bag handling if you reach it earlier. Its Cam Thanh address is a different destination from the cooking classes’ central meeting café.

A town day and two longer connections

Walk from the bridge to the eastern museum

On your heritage day, begin at the Japanese Covered Bridge, then follow Tran Phu east for Phuc Kien Assembly Hall. Take Tan Ky House on Nguyen Thai Hoc as another selected visit, and stop for lunch before continuing to Precious Heritage on Phan Boi Chau. Return along the riverfront when you are ready, or take a hotel break before dinner. Pick the ticketed interiors you most want rather than try to enter every building on that walk. The designated core is for walking and cycling from 09:00 until 21:30 in summer or 21:00 in winter; Phan Chau Trinh’s restriction begins at 17:30. These are vehicle-control hours, not a promise that each museum or house remains open that late.

A free scheduled shuttle needs a return plan

Eco Lodge provides a free fixed-schedule shuttle to the Ancient Town and beach. Obtain the current timetable and stop from reception before leaving, and choose a return that fits dinner or the activity. If the last shuttle is too early, arrange a taxi back to the property rather than shorten an evening without needing to. Families splitting between the pool and a town visit should agree where they will meet again. Keep the hotel entrance saved on each person’s phone.

Reach the cooking-class meeting point yourself

Both Red Bridge classes meet at Hai Cafe, 98 Nguyen Thai Hoc. The USD 35 half-day runs 08:15–13:00: market visit, boat to the school, cooking and lunch, with a return to central town. The USD 59 Deluxe runs 08:00–15:00, adding Tra Que and a longer class before the boat back. Travel from your hotel to Hai Cafe yourself and allow the final hotel leg after the central return. Pool use is offered after class; if you stay beyond the scheduled return, agree separate transport before swimming. Leave another distant outing for a different day.

Keep the heritage ticket for the stay

Choose the listed site combination

Buy the heritage ticket before entering the visiting area. The VND 120,000 option covers the Japanese Covered Bridge or Quan Cong Temple, one museum and three other monuments. The VND 80,000 option offers the bridge or temple plus two other monuments. Choose by the interiors you want; keep the stub for the stay, up to three days, after using the selected admissions. Traditional performances are at 66 Bach Dang, with daily starts at 10:15, 15:15 and 16:15. The 15:15 show can fit after lunch on the town day; allow time for it before heading to the eastern museum.

Match the steps and room to your needs

Identify steps and split levels before reserving

Discuss the route from the car drop-off to reception, then the bedroom and bathroom. The Anantara balcony room has split levels, and the Red Bridge house occupies two floors. Request a ground-floor sleeping and bathroom plan if stairs are difficult, including access to the garden and dining space. For a workshop visit, Reaching Out asks organized groups to arrange a guided visit ahead; explain mobility or communication needs when booking so the visit suits the traveler. A taxi to the door and a usable bedroom solve different parts of the journey.

Choose your dates and calculate the extras

Leave room for a meal, a class and anything you want made to order. Room prices alone will not cover those parts of the holiday.

Plan around heat, rain and holiday dates

Spring for a mixed town-and-coast visit
  • March–May is the national tourism guide’s preferred window for a mixed Hoi An visit. Choose it when both outdoor heritage walks and coastal time matter. A room with a useful sitting area gives the group somewhere to rest between meals and outings.

  • Summer calls for a different daily rhythm

June–August brings hot days. Take longer walks early, stop for lunch out of the sun and return to the room or a shaded café during the hottest part of the afternoon. Move an optional outdoor stop to the evening if everyone is tired. At An Bang, follow local warnings and the conditions on the day before entering the sea; dry weather alone does not settle the swimming decision. A pool or a town meal gives you another way to use the coast day when the water is unsuitable.

  • Rain and Tet affect different kinds of plans

Rain and storms are common from October into January. Pack another layer for cooler January mornings and evenings. Keep a cultural indoor option, such as Precious Heritage, and follow local flood or road instructions before setting out. If roads are disrupted, change the outing rather than press on to a booked countryside meeting. Tet affects classes separately: Red Bridge’s Deluxe excludes the first four holiday days, while the half-day is advertised throughout the year. Get the school’s confirmation for your chosen date before booking the ride to its meeting point.

Three useful costs to calculate explicitly

Heritage visits with a younger teenager
  • Children under 16 are exempt from the heritage fee. For the VND 120,000 five-site ticket, two adults with a 15-year-old therefore pay VND 240,000 in this admission example. The smaller VND 80,000 ticket gives fewer monument choices. Ask the ticket desk what age evidence it needs for your child, and keep meals and transport separate in the budget. Precious Heritage is free, so it can add a cultural stop without using one of the ticket’s museum admissions.

  • Cooking classes use a different child rule

The Red Bridge class prices above are per person and include the listed transaction fee. Ages seven and over pay the full fee. Children six and under may accompany without cooking or paying that fee; their meal is an extra à-la-carte purchase. Two adults taking the half-day therefore pay USD 70 before any child meal and the ride to Hai Cafe. Decide whether your child wants to cook before choosing a family activity, since an accompanying place and a participating place are different.

  • An additional guest is not automatically an extra bed

Eco Lodge’s extra-guest charges apply beyond the occupancy of the room you reserve. They list VND 350,000 per night for ages 6–11 sharing existing bedding and VND 450,000 per night for ages 12 and over; an extra bed is listed at VND 600,000 per person per night. Give the hotel the ages and request one complete quote showing beds and meals. Do not add an excess-occupancy charge to children already included in your four-person Family Retreat booking.

How should I plan a late departure through Da Nang?

Agree bag storage before checkout, then leave a hotel return in the plan to collect everything before the car arrives. Eco Lodge publishes checkout at 12:00 and free late-departure luggage storage; Villa at Red Bridge lists checkout at 11:00. A class finishing in central town still leaves that collection and the road transfer to do. Choose a pickup time with your hotel and carrier that allows check-in, rather than use the last sightseeing stop as your departure point.

Does Villa at Red Bridge have a private pool?

The adjacent 20-metre pool is in the Red Bridge restaurant and cooking-school compound, with daylight use for villa guests. It is shared with that setting, so booking the private house does not reserve the water for your group alone. Choose the villa for the house and its services; if an exclusive pool is essential, select accommodation that expressly includes one.

Why does the Japanese Covered Bridge look different in old photos?

Conservation began on 28 December 2022, finished in late July 2024 and was inaugurated on 3 August 2024. The heritage centre says original wooden structures were kept in their natural colour, with restored wall and roof decoration helping explain the fresher appearance. The work repaired and retained historic material rather than simply replacing the bridge with a new replica. Those dates describe the completed project; use the current heritage ticket for a visit.

Can a vegetarian take the Red Bridge class?

Yes. Both Red Bridge programmes offer alternative ingredients for vegetarians. Tell the school your requirements when reserving, and ask which ingredients replace the meat, seafood or stock in the dishes you will make. For an allergy, name the ingredient and ask the school whether the shared class setup can accommodate it. Obtain that answer before paying rather than decide at the market stop.

Does Anantara’s Garden Suite have two bedrooms?

The Deluxe Garden Suite describes 42 m² for two adults and two children, with a king or twin arrangement and a daybed on the terrace or balcony. That is a family capacity, rather than two separately enclosed bedrooms. If parents and children need a closed door between sleeping spaces, request an interconnecting pair and the exact bedding. Reserve the arrangement that gives your family the separation it needs.
