Begin with Hue’s palace courtyards and royal tomb landscape, cross the Hai Van coast by train, then spend time with Cham sculpture in Da Nang and the merchant streets of Hoi An. The railway is an outing in its own right, while the short final road move leaves an evening to get to know the old town. This route suits someone who enjoys history, food and walking but also wants a less formal coastal afternoon.
Sleep in Hue after days one and two, Da Nang after days three and four, and Hoi An after days five and six. Days two, four and six are the full sightseeing days. The other days include arrival, hotel changes and the airport departure. Keep the Hoi An cooking programme as an alternative to the fuller heritage day; that choice leaves time to eat lunch properly and return to your room.
March and April are useful months to compare for all three bases: Hue’s spring and Da Nang’s drier season overlap, before the strongest summer heat. Later in the year, central Vietnam can have heavy rain and flooding, especially around Hue. Pack walking shoes and light rain protection, and use the indoor alternatives described below if conditions change.
Hue’s Imperial City and Tu Duc’s tomb show different sides of royal life. The first has an ordered ceremonial axis through gates and courtyards; the second uses a lake and planted grounds. Notice that difference rather than treating the afternoon tomb as another palace. Khai Dinh offers a more compact, stepped alternative if its contrasting decoration interests you.
Banh beo are little steamed rice cakes, usually topped with shrimp and served with fish sauce. Banh nam wraps a thin rice-flour preparation in banana leaves; banh khoai is a crisp pancake commonly containing shrimp and pork. Order a few dishes to compare the textures. The peanut-and-pork-liver sauce served with banh khoai also explains why a meat-free-looking plate is not enough to identify a vegetarian meal.
Between Hue and Da Nang, the heritage train passes the Hai Van coastal section with hills on one side and the sea on the other. It offers a different perspective from a road transfer through the tunnel. Keep your camera within reach as the coastline changes.
The Museum of Cham Sculpture arranges its collections around the places where works were found. My Son, Tra Kieu and Dong Duong are useful names to follow on the labels. Religious figures and architectural fragments help connect the objects to temples and communities rather than leave them as isolated carvings. Hoi An’s old houses and assembly halls reflect a port where Vietnamese, Chinese and Japanese traditions met. Tan Ky ancestral house and Phuc Kien Assembly Hall give the street walk a more specific purpose: compare a merchant household with a community’s ceremonial building. The Japanese Covered Bridge adds another part of that international history. Choose the interiors you want to understand, with time between them for a meal.
At Reaching Out, a shop visit can include asking staff to introduce the workshop and the artisans. It is a chance to see how something is made before choosing a purchase. Making your own folding lantern is a separate reserved class. A lantern that packs flat can be a practical souvenir; the distinction between watching the work and joining a lesson matters more than fitting another shop into the walk.

For two nights, staying near the Ancient Town makes the opening evening and morning visits easy to connect on foot. An Bang suits someone who prefers to finish the day at the beach, with a taxi back after town visits. Countryside lodging offers a different setting but also needs that return ride. Give your airport driver the actual hotel address, especially when the booking’s Hoi An label covers a property outside the centre.

After landing at Phu Bai, collect your bags and meet the driver at the airport pickup point you arranged with the hotel or car provider. The airport is roughly a half-hour drive from Hue city; your hotel’s location adds detail to that estimate. If you arrive by rail, ask for collection at Ga Hue instead. Go to the hotel first. If a morning arrival is too early for the room, agree where reception can keep your bags before setting out. For the first walk, start on Le Loi beside the Perfume River. Look for the riverfront buildings and take a short waterside stroll before heading back toward your hotel for dinner. Choose the length after the journey: a drink beside the river is enough for a tired arrival, while a longer walk gives you a first sense of the city’s south bank. Choose the morning Hue–Da Nang heritage train for this plan. Arrange breakfast around its booked departure; an early service may suit a takeaway breakfast requested the evening before. Check out with all your bags and take the reserved taxi to Ga Hue. Keep the ticket and travel documents together, find the assigned carriage and settle your luggage before departure. The railway’s roughly three-hour coastal journey is the main outing today. At Ga Da Nang, meet the car for your next hotel. Eat lunch after dropping the bags or checking in; if the room is not ready, ask reception about storage while you eat. Take a rest before the first afternoon walk. From a riverside base, head to Bach Dang beside the Han River for a short look around the Dragon Bridge end of the waterfront. From a My Khe base, a shore walk nearer your room makes a simpler arrival outing. Choose dinner within an easy return of the hotel, then keep the evening as long or short as your energy allows. The museum closes at 17:00, so this morning visit leaves a generous afternoon afterward. Have lunch in the city before crossing to the shore. Mi Quang is a local option: rice noodles with combinations of pork, shrimp, quail eggs, herbs and peanuts. Take a taxi to My Khe Beach, walk along the shore and pause for a drink. Swimming depends on the flags and instructions on the day; the beach walk still works as the outing when you stay out of the water. Beach-side guests can finish near their hotel, while river-side guests should agree the taxi back. For a city-focused afternoon, use the Bach Dang waterfront instead. The stretch between Dragon Bridge and Tran Thi Ly Bridge offers a named starting and finishing point; stop for a meal or drink and take the hotel ride afterward. Buy the town admission ticket for the interiors you want to use during the stay, then begin near the Japanese Covered Bridge at the west end of the core. Follow Tran Phu east toward Hoi An Market. Turn toward Nguyen Thai Hoc and the Bach Dang riverfront for the return part of the walk. This connected circuit gives you the bridge, shop-house streets, market and waterfront without needing a separate excursion. Leave time for the places that catch your attention and save the fuller interior visits for tomorrow. For dinner, try cao lau: firm rice noodles topped with pork, bean sprouts and herbs. Find a meal along the town walk or return toward your accommodation if you prefer an early evening. Town-side guests can finish on foot according to their hotel location; for An Bang or rural lodging, book the return taxi before settling into dinner. If the bridge entry was already used yesterday, continue with the remaining entries rather than assume the same ticket gives unlimited revisits. Take time inside the house and hall, then have lunch in the town. Afterward, walk to Reaching Out’s craftshop at 131 Tran Phu. Individuals can ask a sales clerk to see the workshop and meet artisans; a larger organised group arranges the visit beforehand. A reserved lantern-making lesson is a different option, with its weekday details below. Walk or take your taxi back to the hotel for a break before the final Hoi An dinner. For the cooking alternative, be at Hai Cafe, 98 Nguyen Thai Hoc, for the 08:15 start. The guide leads the market visit before the boat journey to Red Bridge Cooking School, followed by the herb garden, cooking and lunch. The programme finishes around 13:00 at the school, then its included transfer takes you back to central Hoi An. Give the driver the flight number and departure terminal: Da Nang T1 serves domestic flights and T2 serves international flights. The Ancient Town–airport drive is roughly fifty minutes as a starting estimate; a beach or countryside hotel changes where the trip begins. Set collection with the driver’s estimate for your actual property, add traffic allowance and aim to reach the airport at least two hours before a domestic flight or three before an international one. Follow a longer reporting time if your airline requires it. An early flight makes this a direct hotel-to-airport morning. A later one leaves room for the nearby meal, not a new outing with an uncertain finish. The airport’s check-in area is on Level 2 in both terminals. After six hotel nights, the route ends at the flight departure; any extra stay is a deliberate extension rather than an uncounted seventh night.

Hue Da Nang
Book Hue → Da Nang on the heritage railway’s own service page, choosing the travel date and the seat product. The morning option suits the day-three plan. Use the confirmation for its departure and arrival times, then arrange the hotel taxi to fit that ticket. Save a copy offline for a poor signal at the station. The refurbished train has standard soft-seat carriages and a separate VIP carriage. The renewal announcement describes a drink-and-cake combination in VIP and drinking water in the other upgraded carriages; compare the offer on the ticket you buy. A higher-priced carriage does not automatically include your station taxis. For an afternoon departure, agree checkout storage and return to collect the bags after lunch. Tell the Da Nang driver which service you are arriving on so the meeting follows the train you actually booked.
Da Nang Hoi An
A private car quote should cover collection at your Da Nang hotel and arrival at the Hoi An hotel, with space for your party and bags. That keeps a hotel change to one vehicle. Ask about child seats or mobility needs when agreeing the car rather than after it arrives. The journey time depends on which shore, town or countryside properties you select. Pullman offers a separate service leaving its lobby at 101 Vo Nguyen Giap at 14:30 and using 358 Nguyen Duy Hieu as the Hoi An pickup and drop-off point. Its request form accepts enquiries from guests staying inside or outside the resort. Obtain the reservation, price and suitcase acceptance before choosing it for this move, then book the final taxi from Nguyen Duy Hieu to your Hoi An room if needed. It is useful to compare when you are already staying at Pullman; from another hotel, include the ride to the resort lobby in that comparison.

Hue → Da Nang → Hoi An
Hoi An’s town admission announcement exempts children under sixteen. Red Bridge uses a different rule: participants aged seven and over pay the full cooking price. Children aged six and younger may accompany adults without doing the cooking and can order meals from the restaurant menu separately. Tell the school each child’s age when arranging the booking so the group has the right places and meals.
The museum does not admit large luggage and requires hand luggage over three kilograms to be placed at its luggage counter, with money and high-value items kept with the visitor. A smaller day bag makes it easier to carry what you need for the museum and later shore walk.
Reaching Out lists a reserved folding-lantern class on Monday to Friday, 09:00–10:00, at USD 20–30 per participant. Request the date, price and joining point from the operator. On the heritage version of day six, the class can come before the later town visits; it overlaps the morning Red Bridge programme, so choose one. A staff-led look at working artisans is a different visit from a hands-on lesson.
The city’s published schedule is around 21:00 on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with extra performances possible for some events and holidays. If one of your nights fits, have dinner first and make your way to the Dragon Bridge riverfront, then walk or take a taxi back to the hotel. On other nights the Han River walk is still an evening outing, without expecting a fire-and-water show.
The Cham Museum is the clearest indoor anchor. In Hoi An, use the house interiors and meals when those sites remain open, instead of making the shore the afternoon’s goal. Hue’s palace and tomb grounds still require outdoor walking, even with sheltered buildings. For flooding or a storm that disrupts travel, follow local access instructions and contact the train or car operator about the affected move. A museum alternative cannot solve a closed transport connection.
Add a third Hoi An night and move the airport departure to day eight. That provides a separate full day for the programme you would otherwise replace. The same principle works in Hue if you want a second tomb day: add one hotel night and shift the remaining days, rather than take that time from the scenic train move or the Da Nang full day.
