Match the base to the part of Incheon you will actually use. A historic walking day, a conference stay, a waterfront evening and an overnight flight connection place different demands on transport and hotel location.

Sightseeing and a first visit

Chinatown keeps the historic core, Jayu Park and the Open Port streets together. Sinpo Market extends the walking day; Wolmido adds a short bus or taxi ride. A full free day is more useful than counting only the interval between flights.

Modern hotel or longer stay

Songdo's planned international district suits business travel and a stay beside Central Park. Convensia and Incheon National University stations serve different ends of the district. Serviced residences offer particular kitchen-equipped categories; standard hotel rooms need not include them.

A relaxed seaside evening

Wolmido pairs naturally with a Chinatown day, adding a promenade walk and seafood dinner. The Sea Train offers elevated harbour views; local buses provide a practical alternative. Museums and the waterfront can share an afternoon without a ferry crossing.

A very short layover

An airport-area room can make an overnight connection useful for sleep. A four-to-six-hour layover does not by itself establish enough time for Chinatown: entry formalities, two transfers and return security all reduce sightseeing time.

Getting to and around Incheon

Incheon International Airport is on Yeongjong Island. Mainland Chinatown and Songdo each require an onward journey, and they use different rail connections.

From the airport to central Incheon

Rail to Chinatown or Songdo

Take AREX All-Stop to Gyeyang. For Songdo, change to Incheon Line 1 for Central Park. For Chinatown, take that line to Bupyeong, then change again to Metropolitan Line 1 towards Incheon Station. AREX Express skips Gyeyang and runs to Seoul Station.

Taxi and terminal transfers

A taxi suits luggage-heavy arrivals or a mainland hotel away from stations. The fare depends on the actual district, terminal and traffic, with road tolls potentially added. An airport-area hotel on Yeongjong can still need a hotel shuttle, AREX journey or taxi; it is not automatically walkable from arrivals.

Getting around the city

Incheon Subway

Metropolitan Line 1 ends at Incheon Station beside Chinatown; Incheon Line 1 serves Songdo and meets it at Bupyeong. These are separate lines with similar names. From Chinatown to Central Park, travel via Bupyeong and change to Incheon Line 1 rather than boarding an airport train.

Local taxi journeys

Metered taxis are widely available and practical for the short hop between Chinatown and Wolmido Island, or for reaching Songdo without waiting for a subway connection. A Chinatown-to-Songdo journey is a cross-city trip, while Chinatown-to-Wolmido is a shorter local hop.

Walking the old port

Chinatown, Sinpo Market and Jayu Park sit close enough together to cover on foot in a single unhurried afternoon. Jayu Park is uphill behind Chinatown, so a circuit through its paths involves climbing. Wolmido is better added by bus or taxi when the aim is to spend time on its waterfront.

Wolmi Sea Train and local buses

The sightseeing monorail makes a 6.1 km circuit in about 35 minutes, excluding queues and stops. Wolmi Sea Station is near Incheon Station; Museum Station serves the maritime museum area. For the museum by ordinary bus, its operator lists route 45 to Wolmi Theme Park, followed by a one-minute walk.

T-money card

The same T-money card used across Korea covers Incheon's subway, buses and most taxis, and can be topped up at convenience stores citywide. Card purchase and stored travel credit are separate costs. Airport convenience stores sell cards and accept cash top-ups; tapping out records the completed journey for applicable transfers.

Jayu Park rises behind Chinatown, with uphill paths and steps between viewpoints. The station-side restaurant streets and a climb into the park are different walking tasks. Songdo's canal paths offer a flatter outing, although broad roads and long blocks add distance between the park, hotels and Convensia.

For a stay with sightseeing, two nights in one mainland base avoid an unnecessary hotel move. An early flight may instead favour a last night on Yeongjong. The sample budget below uses one old-port base throughout, with airport road transfers included.

April and May

  • April and May suit longer walking days around Chinatown, Jayu Park and Wolmido, with layers useful beside the water. Spring conditions still vary: a mild afternoon does not guarantee a warm waterfront evening. A park climb and a museum visit make a flexible pairing, and the canal paths in Songdo provide another outdoor option without the old-port hills.

  • Late June-July

    The Changma rainy season affects the mainland in early summer, but its start and finish vary by year. Heat, humidity and heavy rain can interrupt long waterfront walks. The Open Port museums and maritime museum provide indoor alternatives; Sinpo shopping or a restaurant meal can fill a shorter gap without treating every market street as a covered arcade.

  • Autumn and winter

    September and October offer another useful walking season, without a promise of clear weather on every day. Later in the year, shorter daylight and exposed coastal wind favour a smaller outdoor circuit. A Chinatown lunch and museum visit can precede a brief waterfront stop; a room beside Central Park is more convenient for Songdo evenings than a return across the city.

  • Food and local travel

    Allow ₩180,000 (≈ US$135) for food for both adults over three days, plus ₩160,000 (≈ US$120) for transport. The transport pot covers two airport road transfers and local buses or occasional taxis; a rail-based arrival can leave more of it unused. Actual taxi meters, tolls and hotel location determine the bill.

  • Visits and the complete total

    Add ₩40,000 (≈ US$30) for paid museum visits or sightseeing transport, producing ₩580,000 (≈ US$435) for the pair: about US$73 per person per calendar day. The total includes accommodation, food, airport/local transport and visits. It excludes flights, insurance, shopping, alcohol, guided tours and bank fees.

  • Rates, season and extra nights

    Conversions use the ECB reference rates of 16 October 2026, about ₩1,332 per US$1, rounded for planning. Hotels and transport remain payable in their stated currencies. A Songdo conference, public holiday, resort room or added airport night can change the total; moving hotels also adds another transfer and storage gap.
