What is a practical five-day Basque Country itinerary?

Start in Bilbao for two nights: one for art and riverfront architecture, one for Casco Viejo and a more ordinary city rhythm. For a first visit, stay in Abando around Moyúa or the river-facing edge of Abandoibarra. Moyúa has the airport-bus connection; Abandoibarra puts the Guggenheim and its promenade close to your door. Neither needs a car for Tuesday’s museum morning. Casco Viejo is the better alternative when Plaza Nueva and the Seven Streets matter more than the museum. Its pedestrian lanes make dinner easy, but a car cannot simply follow you to every front door. The old town also means a longer walk to the Guggenheim than a stay beside Abandoibarra.

The one-night stop gives you Wednesday afternoon and evening plus Thursday morning. Choose the Centre near Boulevard or the eastern end of La Concha: you can put down your bags, reach the waterfront and walk into Parte Vieja for dinner without crossing the city. Around Plaza de la Constitución, the old town suits travellers who want pintxos streets outside the door, with a livelier night-time setting. Gros, across the Urumea by the Kursaal, makes sense if Zurriola’s surf beach is your priority. It is farther from the La Concha walk used here. With only one night, the Centre is the simpler fit; a longer surfing stay would change that recommendation.

Vitoria is the calm counterpoint: medieval streets, green edges and a final night that feels unlike the coast. Stay near Eduardo Dato, Plaza de España or Plaza de la Virgen Blanca if you want an easy arrival on the flatter Ensanche side, then walk uphill to the old quarter. This puts Thursday lunch and Friday breakfast close to the route, without sleeping at the top of the medieval hill. A stay around Cuchillería or Santa María is more immersive for the old town and the cathedral tour, but the slope is part of that choice. Drivers can use the municipal parking directory to choose a car park near their accommodation; Dendaraba, on Independencia, is one central option. Park once and walk the historic streets.

Arriving on Monday, 19 October 2026, puts the Guggenheim on Tuesday and Getaria on Wednesday; the journey ends on Friday the 23rd. The proposed time windows leave room for meals and hotel changes.

1 Day 1 Arrive in Bilbao by the river On foot

Walk the Nervión and use the evening to understand the city before choosing museums or restaurants. After arriving at Bilbao Airport, the A3247 bus is the straightforward public connection into the city, with stops around Moyúa and Gran Vía as well as the bus station. Go to your hotel first and leave the luggage there; the opening afternoon needs no car. If you arrive early enough, follow the river towards Abandoibarra, keeping the Guggenheim’s titanium curves as your landmark. Seeing the building from outside today makes tomorrow’s indoor visit feel less rushed. Allow roughly an hour for an unhurried promenade, then stop for a drink or return to the hotel before dinner. For dinner, choose a small patch of Casco Viejo around Plaza Nueva and the Seven Streets rather than a circuit across town. The square and pedestrian streets give the first evening a different scale from the museum district. Late arrivals can simply eat near their base: the riverside walk fits after the museum on Tuesday. You still have a second Bilbao night, so nothing essential depends on landing before lunch.

2 Day 2 Art, old town and appetite On foot

Visit the Guggenheim if it appeals, then keep Casco Viejo and dinner equally important. Start with a 10:00 museum entry and leave the rest of the morning for the galleries rather than attaching another timed visit. In autumn the museum normally opens Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00–19:00; this Tuesday fits that pattern. Its website showed adult admission at €18 when checked on 7 October, with the audio guide included. The price for your selected visit date is the one used at purchase. Have lunch after the museum, then take a proper break. The afternoon is for the old town: Santiago Cathedral and San Antón help orient the walk through the Seven Streets, while Plaza Nueva offers an easy place to sit between them. These are outdoor stops in this plan, so you need not hurry between paid entrances. Walk one way and use a local ride back if your feet have had enough. Keep Tuesday dinner distinct from tomorrow’s pintxos evening in San Sebastián. A seated meal is a useful choice before two travel days; an early night also makes Wednesday’s car collection easier. If contemporary art is not your interest, spend the museum hours on the river and old streets instead, subtract the museum admission from the budget, and keep the same two-night base.

3 Day 3 Bilbao to San Sebastián via one chosen coast stop Car

After breakfast, take your bags to the booked Bilbao-area rental branch; the Barakaldo option used for the return below opens at 09:30 on weekdays. A 10:00 collection is a useful target, leaving the earlier morning for checkout and the journey to the branch. For the central stays, book a Spanish-registered car rated B, C, ECO or Zero in Spain’s environmental system. These classes fit San Sebastián’s and Vitoria’s central low-emission zones for the October 2026 trip. Use the hotel or public car park’s vehicle approach: an eligible emissions class does not open pedestrian streets to cars. Today’s single coastal pause is Getaria. Drive towards the Zarautz area and continue along the coast to the fishing town; allow the whole late morning and lunch period for the move rather than treating it as a direct Bilbao–San Sebastián drive. Spend about two hours in Getaria on a harbour walk and lunch. Mount San Antón, the headland known as the Mouse of Getaria, gives the port its recognisable outline. The working harbour is the point of the stop; a long hill walk or another coastal village would eat into your San Sebastián afternoon. Drivers stay with water or another alcohol-free drink at lunch. Use a visitor parking space with enough time for the stop. Blue-and-white high-turnover spaces have a 40-minute limit throughout the year. The harbour approaches also restrict vehicles over 1.90 metres, so a tall hired vehicle needs another parking choice. Ordinary blue-zone regulation follows the town’s seasonal calendar; it does not make every empty space available to visitors. Aim to reach your San Sebastián accommodation around 15:00–16:00, park and take a break before walking. Start along La Concha’s promenade, then turn towards Alderdi Eder and the old town for the evening. In heavy rain, leave Getaria out and go straight to San Sebastián; San Telmo’s museum near Plaza Zuloaga gives the afternoon an indoor alternative. Its October hours are 10:00–20:00 Tuesday to Sunday and ordinary admission is €10 per adult.

4 Day 4 San Sebastián to Vitoria-Gasteiz, then the old town Car

Leave San Sebastián after a bay walk or a late breakfast, then take the inland transfer to Vitoria-Gasteiz. A short promenade from Alderdi Eder is enough this morning; the beach itself changes with the tide, so you can enjoy the bay without building the schedule around a long sand walk. Collect your bags after breakfast and aim to leave around 10:30. Allow about two and a half hours from one hotel to the next, including leaving the city, driving, parking and dropping the bags. This is a planning window, not a promise about traffic. Lunch in Vitoria around 13:00 leaves a comfortable interval before an afternoon visit. Once the car is parked, use Plaza de la Virgen Blanca as the start of the old-town walk, then move into the medieval streets above it. Cuchillería and the lanes near Santa María make the change from the coast easy to see. A late-afternoon guided cathedral visit is the main booked experience here. The ordinary Cathedral tour costs €9 and takes 60 minutes; Cathedral and Tower is a separate €11, 90-minute option. Booking secures a place, with payment at the visitor centre on Cantón Santa María, 3. Arrive ten minutes before the selected tour. An afternoon tour leaves room for lunch and a rest; choose the language and available slot when booking. Afterwards, have dinner in the centre and return on foot. Rioja wine country would require another driving excursion and is better saved for an extra night. Vitoria has its own evening in this route, followed by a morning that is still yours before the journey home.

5 Day 5 A Vitoria morning, then the journey home Car

Enjoy one last Vitoria walk before the afternoon drive home. Use the morning around Plaza de España and Eduardo Dato if you prefer a flatter walk, or revisit the medieval streets for a few photographs before collecting the bags. For a flight from Bilbao Airport, choose a departure after 20:00. Have lunch in Vitoria, then leave around 13:00, keeping three hours for the drive, fuel and car return. A concrete branch option is Oscar’s Automóviles Galindo on C. Gabriel Celaya, 10, in Barakaldo. Its published weekday hours are 09:30–14:00 and 16:00–19:00, so book the return for 16:00: a 14:00–15:00 handover would fall in the lunch closure. Take a taxi to the airport afterwards, leaving the evening margin for your airline’s arrival requirement. This returns the car to its original branch; the airport rental area is elsewhere. An earlier flight can make the fourth night in Vitoria awkward. For a morning departure, choose a different final-night arrangement when booking rather than trying to squeeze this same walk and drive into the dawn hours. Travellers continuing by land can end the itinerary in Vitoria instead, but the worked budget below includes the car’s return to its original Bilbao-area branch.

The hotel-to-hotel windows include parking and a pause; they are planning allowances rather than quoted driving times.

This example is for 19–23 October 2026: five days, four nights, two adults sharing one double room, and one driver aged 30 or over. It combines attributed hotel and rental benchmarks with labelled spending allowances; it is not a bookable package. Flights, premium dining and optional visits are excluded. The six amounts below total €1,539; adding a €30 reserve gives €1,569, rounded to about €1,600. For the rooms, INE’s October 2025 room-only ADR was €129.30 in Bilbao, €180.05 in San Sebastián and €86.81 in Vitoria. Two Bilbao nights and one in each later city total €525.46 before hotel VAT, or €578.01 with 10% VAT. It is a historical average across hotel categories and booking channels, not a four-star offer or availability for October 2026. Breakfast and parking are separate. The Basque tourist-stay tax is due to start in January 2027, after the dates in this example. For the rental, Oscar’s Bilbao-area page showed €86.40–151.40 for a small car over three weekdays with an 800 km package when checked on 7 October 2026. The example rounds the upper figure to €160. This is an indicative published benchmark, dependent on vehicle and branch, not a quote for 21–23 October. VAT and basic insurance are included; the excess remains. The route uses the same branch for collection and return, with the Barakaldo option’s lunch closure built into Friday’s plan.

Booking tips

Book the four nights and the rental branch as one coherent sequence. The room benchmark can move substantially for a festival, a premium hotel or a summer beach date.
The rental requires a valid licence, ID and a debit or credit card; Oscar lists an international permit and passport requirement for non-EU customers. A deposit is a separate card hold, not a trip expense. Extra drivers, young-driver charges, upgraded cover and excess kilometres are outside this example.
Buy the Guggenheim ticket for the selected day once your arrival is settled: issued tickets are non-refundable. Reserve a suitable-language Vitoria tour before committing the afternoon to it.

Questions about five days in the Basque Country

What if I prefer trains to driving?

For the simplest five-day rail trip, use Bilbao and San Sebastián as two bases. The Getaria pause and Vitoria night described above belong to this road-trip version. Euskotren’s E1 links Bilbao Matiko and Donostia Amara; the winter timetable valid from 7 September 2026 shows the weekday 06:55 train arriving at 09:38, a 2h43 journey. Amara is the Euskotren station, not Renfe’s Donostia station. If you extend the rail trip to Vitoria, arrange that onward leg as a separate journey. For the departure from Vitoria, La Unión’s A3720 links Vitoria and Bilbao Airport; its currently posted fare is €15 one way, with taxes and station charges included. The winter timetable is dated 1 September 2026 and distinguishes city-centre, bus-station and university departures. Use the departure shown for your actual boarding stop, rather than a time from another row.

When is the best season for this five-day trip?

Late spring and early autumn suit a city-and-coast trip without making beach time the whole purpose. May–October is a useful broad window, but October is not reliably dry. AEMET’s historical 1981–2010 normals for Igeldo, the 250-metre station above San Sebastián, give October an average daily maximum of 18.5°C, 159 mm of rain and 11.8 days with at least 1 mm of rainfall. Those are climate figures, not a forecast for the city streets. Pack a light waterproof layer and shoes for wet pavements. In the height of summer, the accommodation part of the autumn budget is a poor price guide, particularly for San Sebastián. In winter, keep the city emphasis and shorten outdoor intervals rather than treating the bay as a swimming stop.

How do pintxos evenings work with dietary needs or tired feet?

Start with a small area in Parte Vieja rather than walking between distant recommendations. A pintxo is a small serving: try one or two at a bar, then decide whether you want another stop or a seated meal. Plaza de la Constitución and the lanes leading towards Santa María give the evening a clear focus. The tourism board’s food directory has vegetarian and coeliac filters, along with accessibility and all-day-kitchen options. Use those to pick suitable venues before dinner if the requirement matters to your meal. A filter is an introduction, not an assurance about cross-contamination: for a serious food allergy, speak to the venue about the actual dish. Travellers who find standing uncomfortable can choose a table meal and still enjoy the old-town walk. There is no need to finish a fixed bar list.

Which walks need care if I have limited mobility?

The La Concha promenade offers the bay view without committing to the sand or a hilltop climb. San Sebastián’s official accessible old-town route starts around Boulevard and includes Plaza de la Constitución, San Vicente, Plaza Zuloaga and Santa María; its port approach has a steep slope. Keep that particular descent out of the walk if it is unsuitable for you. Vitoria’s medieval centre is on a hill, while the Ensanche approach around Eduardo Dato and Virgen Blanca is a gentler starting point. The municipal accessibility map identifies assisted routes into the old quarter. Discuss the specific cathedral tour with the visitor centre if you need step-free access, since the standard and tower products differ. In Bilbao, the Guggenheim provides an accessible entrance by elevator. These choices make the trip easier without assuming that every old-town lane or every tour is equivalent.

Where should I leave luggage during the museum day?

Tuesday is still a Bilbao hotel night, so leave your large bags at your accommodation and take a small day bag to the Guggenheim. Bags larger than 35 × 35 cm are not allowed in the galleries. The cloakroom also excludes items over 60 × 45 cm that do not fit the scanner. The overnight sequence makes the other visits simpler: Wednesday’s luggage goes to the San Sebastián stay, and Thursday’s to the Vitoria stay before the cathedral tour. On Friday, collect the bags before starting the return drive. You do not need to add a luggage-storage stop to each day.

Would another night improve the route?

Yes: put it in San Sebastián first if you want both the coast and a museum, a surf lesson or a leisurely restaurant lunch. The existing one-night stay gives a useful first look, but not a spare full day. Bilbao already has two nights, while Vitoria has its own afternoon and following morning. For Rioja Alavesa or Laguardia, add a separate overnight and plan that part as a wine-country visit. Driving there between the San Sebastián checkout and Vitoria’s cathedral tour would change the purpose of day 4. If you have only five days and dislike moving hotels, keep two bases instead; give the coast a second night.
