Airport arrivals and journeys across Osaka

Kansai Airport is southwest of Osaka; Itami serves domestic flights to the northwest. The Shinkansen arrives at Shin-Osaka, across the Yodo River from the main shopping and restaurant districts. Start with the correct arrival station before planning your hotel walk.

Rapi:t takes as little as 34 minutes to Nankai Namba. A regular reserved seat totals ¥1,670 at the standard counter price, or ¥1,520 with the Nankai ticketless seat reservation. The ¥970 base fare is separate from the ¥700 or ¥550 seat supplement. Buy the seat through Nankai Reservation for Limited Express or at the station. Leave time to walk from the platform to your hotel. For a return flight, the airport station serves the Terminal 1 area. Terminal 2 needs the free shuttle from Aeroplaza, a roughly ten-minute ride plus waiting and walking; allow for this before airline check-in.

HARUKA to Tennoji, Osaka or Shin-Osaka

JR HARUKA directly serves these three stations. Eligible visitors with a foreign passport and Temporary Visitor status can buy the discounted one-way ticket before arriving in Japan: ¥1,300 to Tennoji or ¥1,800 to Osaka and Shin-Osaka, including an ordinary reserved seat. For JR-WEST online bookings paid by card, collect it with your passport, reservation number, chosen four-digit PIN and the physical credit card used to pay; virtual or numberless cards cannot be used. This is a visitor discount with conditions, so it should not be confused with the ordinary fare sold at the station.

Itami Airport to Umeda

The limousine bus reaches Osaka Marubiru near Osaka Station in about 30 minutes for ¥730 per adult or ¥370 per child. The same route also has services to Herbis Osaka and Hotel Hanshin. Buses operate on a first-come basis, with no reservation. Choose the stop closest to the room you have booked, and include the walk from that stop in your arrival plan. On the return journey, leave a margin for the first-come queue and road delays before your airline’s check-in deadline.

Use the Midosuji Line through the centre

Use the Midosuji Line through the centre

Midosuji joins Shin-Osaka, Umeda, Hommachi, Shinsaibashi, Namba and Tennoji. It is the simplest line to recognise for a first trip because it connects so many of the hotel areas above. Once you reach Shinsaibashi or Namba, explore the nearby streets on foot. The line will get you between the two main centres, but the castle and aquarium need a different line or connection.

Take the regular train to Kyoto

From Osaka Station, the JR Special Rapid reaches Kyoto in about 30 minutes for ¥580 each way. It has no seat reservation, so you can use an IC card or buy a normal station ticket. This is a useful day trip when you want to keep your luggage in Osaka. Plan the sights within Kyoto separately; arriving at Kyoto Station does not put you beside Gion or the eastern temples.

Reach western Osaka on the right branch

For USJ, use JR Universal City on the Yumesaki Line; the transfer from the Loop Line is at Nishikujo. Kaiyukan is in Tempozan, reached from Osakako on the Chuo subway. These are different journeys, even though both attractions belong to the Bay Area. Give the park a full day. The aquarium fits more comfortably with nearby harbour sights and lunch in Tempozan.

Walk to the Nakanoshima galleries

The National Museum of Art, Osaka is about five minutes from Watanabebashi Exit 2, ten from Higobashi Exit 3, or twenty from Osaka Station. It is a good stop when you want art and river walks in the same afternoon. Choose the nearby station that matches where you will go afterward. From Yodoyabashi Exit 7, the museum walk takes about fifteen minutes.

An IC card is convenient for ordinary city journeys when you will use both subway and JR trains. The airport reserved-seat supplement and Shinkansen travel are separate purchases. Pay attention to the operator as well as the station name: a hotel near JR Namba does not place you at Nankai’s airport platforms. For only a couple of subway rides, paying for each journey is usually simpler than organising a pass.

A day pass for several subway rides

Enjoy Eco Card costs ¥820 on weekdays or ¥620 on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays; the child price is ¥310. Buy it at a subway vending machine. It covers Osaka Metro and eligible Osaka City Bus services for the printed calendar day, ending that night. JR and other railway companies are separate, and Yumeshima is excluded. Compare your planned rides with the pass price before buying.

In a large interchange, the accessible entrance can be on a different side from the stairs nearest your hotel. Use the station’s facility map to choose that entrance. This helps you make a direct journey with a wheelchair or stroller without doubling back inside the station.

Practical facilities at the art museum

The National Museum of Art lends wheelchairs from the entrance reception on the first floor. It has an accessible toilet, a children’s room and a nursing room on the first basement floor, and allows assistance dogs. Strollers are also available to borrow, subject to space when the museum is busy. These facilities make the galleries a useful indoor outing for families or visitors who need a seated break.

Osaka’s restaurant and shopping streets fit around a few paid visits. Put the castle, observatory or aquarium in the part of the day when you have time to enjoy them, and leave space for a meal between stops.

You do not need to walk all 2.6 kilometres: start near Tenma or Ogimachi, browse one stretch and decide where to have lunch as you go.

Choose one if your day is short, instead of hurrying through both just to reach the next stop.

    Kaiyukan prices vary by date; use the official calendar for your chosen visit before setting the budget. The official site sells entry for a date and time, which helps you plan the journey to Tempozan. It is a substantial part of a family’s sightseeing budget, so leave enough time inside. Children aged two and under enter free; prices for older children depend on age and date.

  • The nightly accommodation tax

    Osaka charges ¥200 per person per night when the accommodation fee is ¥5,000–14,999; ¥400 at ¥15,000–19,999; and ¥500 from ¥20,000. Below ¥5,000 it is exempt. The taxable fee includes room-related service and compulsory cleaning charges, but excludes meals and consumption tax. If the room has no individual guest price, divide its charge by the number of guests to find each person’s band. A couple staying three nights in the lowest taxable band pays ¥1,200 in total. Compare hotel totals with this extra charge in mind.

The tower opens at 9am and normally closes at 6pm, with last admission at 5:30pm; starting near closing leaves little time for the exhibitions. The museum closes from 28 December to 1 January, so keep a year-end visit to the park instead.

  • Register the whole group’s USJ admission

    Register every member’s Studio Pass in the official USJ app before entering. The Studio Pass admits you to the park; Super Nintendo World may also require a separate Area Timed Entry ticket. Same-day Area Timed Entry or Standby Entry is obtained through the app after entering the park, subject to capacity. For guaranteed area entry, choose an advance product that explicitly includes an entry time. Keep the phone charged and the party’s admission tickets together.

  • Do not make every meal a Dotonbori queue

    Dotonbori’s giant signs are fun to see, but leave room for a quieter sit-down meal too. Hozenji Yokocho has small restaurant lanes nearby, while Tenma offers everyday counters and arcade shops in northern Osaka. Takoyaki is a good snack, not a reason to skip lunch. When you visit with children, choose a table and a familiar dish before everyone gets tired of standing in the busiest street.

    The Osaka Castle Museum ticket also includes the Toyotomi Stonewall Museum. Its underground display lets you see stonework from the earlier castle, adding a different part of the story to the rebuilt main tower. Keep the ticket with you and leave room for this second visit while you are in the park.

Is Osaka Castle the original sixteenth-century tower?

No. The present main tower was rebuilt in 1931 and houses a museum. Many surrounding stone walls, moats and gates date from the Tokugawa period. The visit combines historical objects inside with the surviving fortifications outside, rather than an intact original wooden castle.

Where can I shop for anime goods in Osaka?

Go to Denden Town in Nipponbashi. Its shops sell electronics, games, manga and anime merchandise, giving it a different focus from Shinsaibashi’s fashion stores. Browse during the day, when more shops are open, and leave time to compare several before buying.

Where can I get visitor information after arriving by Shinkansen?

Use the Travel Service Center on Shin-Osaka’s third-floor concourse, opposite the Shinkansen Central Exit. It has Osaka visitor information and a JR-West counter for international travellers. This is a useful first stop if you need help before continuing into the city.

Is the National Museum of Art free for children?
